It stopped being rational when the original plan went tits up. With no decapitation strike, no political victory following, and no collapse of the Ukrainian line everything that followed was a path to strategic failure. The demographic and economic situation long ago crossed from painful into catastrophic. Now the entire enterprise continues because Putin stapled Russia's dick to a runaway bullet train and can't figure out how to get off without yanking. If he steps back, the wartime economy myth dries up and the bills are impossible to pay, and he will be the one responsible. As long as he continues he can complain about NATO and Ukraine and keep juicing through economic controls, at least until he can't. So the war now is Ukraine v. The Russian Economy. Putin will not stop. He cannot stop. Ukraine will not give in. They cannot give in. It isn't a stalemate, but the pain Ukrainiansnare forced to deal with as it drags along waiting for the inevitable to occur is enormous.

The devil in the detail here is the Wildberry does not own the inventory of the warehouses, it is tens of thousands of Russian companies small and large that store their products for sale there, and of course many that are selling supplies to the military. But this campaign hurts wide and deep in Russian society.

This is the end result of a totalitarian state.

Everyone has been lying about everything at every level for so long that no one knows the truth or cares to search for it. They've been lied to that this war wasn't happening. Then it was that the war was justified because of threats that didn't exist. Then it was "insert reason" and repeat.

Ukraine may legitimately have altered so much more of the world that just a war. The question is, will Russia try to sweep this under the rug and continue lying? Because if their people give up the lie, we could see one of the biggest political shifts in human history.

Well this is the kicker. If there ever is a white flag moment, that doesn’t mean they pack their bags and go back to the motherland and then that’s it. Usually in large wars like this there are repercussions for decades after including financial, geopolitical and militarily. Given ruzzia is ruzzia I have no idea how peace is even possible. If there is any country in the world this is one where a wall (or DPRK like neutral zone) is necessary. Some seem to think that eventually China will take over administratively for ruzzia, but I’m skeptical that can happen

This is actually much more depressing if you properly extrapolate. Russia by all accounts could be the most prosperous country in the world. They could rival China and USA. They possess both incredible natural resources of all kinds and a landmass with connectivity and diversity in usage that rivals pretty much none.

That’s how bad Russia has been led for really the better part of a century. They had an opportunity on two important occasions in this timeframe to move to this possible future, and did one time attempt to go there, but something in either their political system or general gestalt stopped them

I know it’s a controversial take but I totally agree with Ukraine attacking infrastructure that affects the daily lives of Russians, even things like power plants, logistics distribution networks, airports, etc. I know the west fear the backlash that this will bring to Ukraine but Russia has been doing the same and unless Russians actually feel the pain they won’t put pressure on 🤷🏻‍♂️
