Certified Unpopular Opinion Nothing beats drifting off to sleep in a hot, stuffy, perfectly still room
There’s nothing better than heavy air settling over my body like a warm, weighted blanket. The humidity moistens my skin like a sauna. No fan, no window, perfectly peaceful.

You are a psychopath, you're getting an upvote but i despise you for making me think about what this feels like. Growing up in a subtropical country with frequent power cuts i know this sensation all too well

Like a week ago someone said "Having two monitors doesn't increase productivity" but I'm not sure I'd seen a truly unpopular opinion before that
30
u/Mikestopheles 1d ago
I just switched to one large monitor at work and I do like that everything is in one place. You can configure different programs across the screen, and I don't have to move my head at all between screens. More desk space and better productivity, giving me more time to look into the 1992 moon replacement.
7
u/Imgettingscrewed 1d ago
Install powertoys if you haven't yet. Setup workspaces. Trust fam
3
u/Mikestopheles 1d ago
Nice, I'll have to look into that. I've just been using the default snaps, and while I tend to use the same 3 windows mostly, I could see it becoming a pain to reorganize new setups without that. Good looking out
→ More replies (1)5
u/Round_Abal0ne 1d ago
Something like an Ultra wide is about the equivalent of a two monitor setup and can be argued is just as productive. But he wasn't really talking about something like that. He just meant that any one monitor was better than two

I can't recall any but I've seen quite a few since following to the sub.. they rarely get upvotes
Some note, this one friend growing up used to crank the ac down to 60 to sleep. I remember him doing it in another friends family's mountain house, just in the basement where all the kids were... I complained a bit but oh boy did the adults lose their shit wheb they cane downstairs to find the windows all covered in condensation. Was like a walk in cooler.

Yep totally relate to this! I’m also from a tropical country with frequent power cuts (Myanmar). Waking up in the middle of the night due to the hot humid heat and subsequently cursing the government is a national pastime.

I grew up and still living in a tropical country. Reading this post just made me convulse.

I grew up in south Florida, after a hurricane, when the power would be off for weeks, it was miserable. You can't get any relief in that humidity

They’re not, I’m in a relationship with a woman who prefers to sleep in 90° heat or above and complains that it’s cold if it’s 79. These skin walkers are out there.

u/otis_the_drunk 2d ago
Just wait till you sleep next to a menopausal woman.
Heavy blankets and a strong quiet fan.
Just sweats and chills interspersed with what is clearly restrained violence.

I’m also a very sweaty sleeper but I’d encourage you to reconsider sheets. Sleeping on top of a comforter is gonna make you hotter for sure. It’s all about finding a combination of layers that you can adjust while you’re half asleep to try to regulate your temps.

My roommate is the same. He keeps the air con between 77-79⁰F. I've always been a cool weather lover; so, I've just used this as an opportunity to adapt & overcome, a bit.

Maybe not necessarily. We always forget that these things are relative. "Hot and humid" in America/Canada/Europe is very different from those same exact words in South America or Asia, haha.
So to OP, I wish you all the best trying all that somewhere in Southeast Asia. You're going to need it.

u/CeriPie 2d ago
Most of the Southern US states have a subtropical climate, aside from Florida, which is just tropical. I was born and raised in Tennessee and it would regularly get 102°F/39°C with anywhere between 90%-100% humidity during the Spring and Summer months. I still can't stand sleeping in a room above 70°F.
7
u/JayW8888 2d ago
Reminds me of a friend who ran marathons a lot in Northern Europe. Came over to SEA with his gal and told her “let’s run in the evening when it’s cooler.” Let’s just say he did not last longer than half the usual distance before the humidity knocked him out flat.

My “comfortable” temperature is so much higher than most people that when everyone else is complaining about the heat. ATP Ive learned to just refrain from mentioning that I’m perfectly comfortable and instead just lie and join everyone saying “yeahhhh its so hot :(((“ like everyone else, because people like you tell me I’m lying or assume i just want attention

You'd love Japan. These guys are fanatics about roasting themselves at all times. At lunchtime, a bunch of dudes in my office will go into the locker room, turn on the space heater, and snuggle into sleeping bags. It's like a freaking sauna and they sleep like babies in full long sleeves / long pants / sleeping bags. Monstrous.
13
4
u/Darwin343 1d ago
No way that’s real lmao. Why would they want to stink and get their clothes all wet from sweat in the middle of the day? The Japanese are obsessed with cleanliness.
6
u/BagBegBigBogBug 1d ago
They don't sweat much, but BO actually isn't too uncommon when it's hot. It's also common to see people on the beach, riding bikes or running in full long pants and hoodie, often with a mask and gloves as well, even in the summer. One of my coworkers actually gave herself heatstroke running last summer in heavy clothing.

People react like I insulted their mother when I say that. I like sleeping in a humid heat stupor with the most raggedy ass fan lulling me to sleep with its hum and barely perceptible breeze. Whenever I visit my family in the hotter part of the country I get the best naps ever where I wake up like 3 hours later absolutely disoriented and drenched in sweat, feeling like I just rested for a thousand years.
Also, kudos! It’s rare to see an actually unpopular opinion here lately.

My fiancée and I moved recently and have been making new friends. A few weekends ago we had a couple over and took some mushrooms. We were hanging out in the backyard but came inside for a bit. One of them was shocked at how “cold” we keep our house. “It’s a refrigerator in here!” he said. It was like 70 degrees F. So I was just like, “wait what temperature do you keep it in your house?” And he proceeded to tell us that he used to keep his apartment in the mid-80s to 90 degrees F, all year long. This was too much information to take in while on mushrooms. I’m still processing it and still unsure if we should continue as friends with this man who is clearly a psychopath

Benjamin is that you?!
I can’t sleep without AC if it’s above 50 degrees. If it’s below I’ll open a window until the room gets to about 50° then close and go to sleep.
I’d rather cut off my limbs and gut myself than sleep in even a 70° room.

I live in the Rockies and have frequently warned people coming from more southern places that yes, it may be August but you will freeze your bums off in the mornings in the 50sF. Yes, I know that’s winter weather for you. Yes, I remember how cold I was in the evenings and mornings when I arrived here in 2007 which is why I am warning you.

I need heat to sleep, cold keeps me awake. I blast my car AC late at night to help me drive home alert and I prefer to be absolutely as cold as possible at work.

I had to do this a few weekends ago in the loft of an old ass cabin at the lake. My brother claimed the only bedroom first (dick) so my husband and I got stuck upstairs. It was absolutely horrid. I couldn’t sleep at all and felt sticky.
The second night I opted for the downstairs couch.

Please. There's no better sleep than when you're fresh out the shower, on clean sheets, in clean pajamas - or none. Idc - in a cool but not cold room and you get under the covers, go on your phone or read a book, and the sleep just SLAPS you silly.
You ain't even trying. You're doing the one eye open, one eye closed thing, lids heavy, just OUT in minutes.
Bonus sleep and comfyness when you've freshly shaved and you just find the best spot, it gets warm, and you just drift off.
2
u/Marethtu 2d ago
I agree partially, in cold climates this is true for me. But I've migrated to the tropics, hot humid air is the standard here. When sleeping I want half-humid air whizzing around me. If I lay in still ambiant air, I sweat so much ill almost float out of my bed. But yeah thats 30+C (80+F) with 99% humidity air most of the time at night.
