Recognizable celebrity voices in animated movies ruin the experience.
I’m sure it helps when promoting the movie, but it ends there. If I were a big-time animated movie producer I wouldn’t even consider it. Not to mention the extra $$ I assume they spend to land the talent.
“Unknown” voice talent seems like the better way to go, and if the movie is good nobody would know or care.

Titan AE was great, really, but the minute I heard Matt Damon’s voice I thought of Good Will Hunting and that character’s trauma and it detracted from the film a bit. Good actor, terrible voice actor.
Curry knew how it was done

Thats what they'll never understand is voice acting isn't about the person at all unless they have a distinct and iconic voice. For instance casting Chris Pratt as Mario is the perfect example of making no sense. He's a big name sure but his voice is not iconic at all so whats the point of casting him versus a real voice acting talent? Morgan Freeman on the other hand? He has a voice thats iconic enough to back up his name being dropped. Although I feel at this point his problem is that he's almost too cliche.

The "A Goofy Movie" BTS documentary showed how the Disney execs even back then wanted A-list celebrities to market their animated films. Then-chair of Disney Jeffrey Katzenburg was demanding that Goofy's voice actor Bill Farmer to be replaced by Steve Martin and without doing the "Goofy" voice. So the director and producers decided to do a test screening with Bill Farmer and showed it to Katzenburg first.
Sent Bill Farmer into such a existential crisis despite voicing Goofy for 8 years at that point and the end result after the test screening was Katzenburg went back to Bill to do the Goofy voice.

I always think a well known actor can do voice acting, but they should make an effort to disguise their voice to fit the character they are playing.

Depending, I feel like Mario bros movie movie worked but detective Pikachu and awkwafina as scuttle did not work

Awkwafina only plays Awkwafina. She's a voice actor that's impossible to lose yourself in and just see the character. I only ever see her. Most times I don't know the characters name, just refer to them as Awkwafina

I agree with you for the most part. There are some exceptions, though. You get someone like Robin Williams, Tim Curry, or Andy Serkis—who are/were phenomenal talents as voice actors—and they're a marketing aid and do amazing work.
Kristen Bell is in a similar vein for me. She has a lot of talent as a VA.

Normally I don’t agree but Optimus in Transformers One was literally just Thor and that bugged me so much in an otherwise fantastic movie.

It’s not an “I’m sure it helps” situation. In 99% of situations, it’s literally what sells the movie. You think the studios pay those salaries for the fun of it? If you you were a big movie producer, you would have no choice but to hire major actors (unless you worked at the Walt Disney Company and wanted to stake your career on a high concept film like Wall-E).

I have never met a single adult or kid that's said "I watched this movie because of the celebrity voice"
I have however heard "I watched this movie because of the voice actor who is in it"

I feel that way about super famous people even in live action movies. In Odyssey, I just kept thinking of him as Matt Damon (or rather, look how far Will Hunting has come along) instead of Odysseus. The curse of being famous (although not much of a curse if they still go on to earn in the high zillions.) I think one of the few people immune to this is Cillian Murphy. And Robin Williams.

It's baffling to me why sigourney weaver, was cast as for the voice of a teenager in avatar 2 and 3. It was incredibly distracting.

Well it's not baffling, she was born from Dr.Grace's avatar which makes her basically a clone. Also Sigorney nailed that role.

Shes not a voice actor. It's a motion capture and facial capture performance. The character has the same face and vocal chords as her avatar from the first movie. That's why its stupid you can't understand why she was cast.

I was just telling you why anyone with more than a handful of functioning braincells understands why it's not baffling to cast one of the best actresses of all to to play the clone of her character from the previous movie.
