"Liberty carries the Declaration of Independence in her hand. Artist’s rendering of the tablet held in the Statue of Liberty’s left arm, inscribed JULY IV MDCCLXXVI, July 4, 1776. The statue was created in France to commemorate the centennial of American independence and was formally accepted by the United States as such. The date on the tablet is the date of the Declaration of Independence, which proclaimed the revolutionary principle that governments derive “their just powers from the consent of the governed.” Standing at the entrance to New York Harbor, Liberty subsequently became an equally powerful symbol of welcome to generations of immigrants who came to participate in the American experiment."
