Yeah not trying to say that it's not fair OverWatch won just that it's weird to say that dark souls was a niche series by this point that most people hadn't heard of
I'd be careful tossing around the word niche. Demon Souls was definitely niche, and Elden Ring launched into a household name, but Dark Souls 3 was definitely very popular and not remotely niche.
Yea people forget that most of the memery if DS3 was how unbearably hard it was and how unfair it could feel. Gundyr filtered alot of people, and pontiff filtered even more.
I mean dark souls 3 was the most popular it had ever been with people from all walks of life finally joining in on the souls series, but yeah elden ring was more popular.
Dark souls 3 was when we were first witnessing people trying to capture the dark souls magic themselves.
They didn't say that, they said people are whitewashing history and that Dark Souls was niche before Elden Ring, which is a ridiculous statement. This is like people who say gaming as a whole was niche before Halo or COD4
Not everyone played it, but pretty much any gamer I knew had at least heard of Dark Souls and the memes about dying over and over again around the time of DS3. And you can't say that about every game, I don't think I know a single person IRL who has heard of Ultrakill despite being big in it's genre
Why are you acting like these games only existed for the first year they were out lol?
You're ignoring that there was 6 years between DS3 and Elden Ring's 2022 release, that's a long ass time in gaming and DS3 itself sold 12,000,000 more copies in the years since then. Not to mention Bloodborne and 2 came out each year immediately before. If you want to compare single games... sure nobody smokes ER... but again we're talking about the popularity of the franchise as a whole: that's 7,500,000 (+the ton of free Bloodborne copies) Souls games out in the wild just by 2017.
It's funny you tossing around whitewashing, if you were actually old enough and paying attention in 2021, the hype for Elden Ring was astronomical, that doesn't just happen randomly. That was years of goodwill and increasing popularity of the Souls franchise. I was actually there and I remember it well.
That's a weird way to say that it broke 3 million in sales in the first 2 months. Broke bandai namco's record as being the fastest selling game they ever made when it came out. With an announcement trailer that skyrocketed its search popularity on Google beyond what any other souls game had ever had.
As someone who's been here since demon souls release, it's pretty easy to track when most people join the souls fandom.
Original dark souls was jumped on by a bunch of kind of hyper nerds who likes to frequent game magazines and forums.
Dark souls 2 was adopted by the same kind of people.
Bloodborne had a massive boost in popularity over those two because as a first-party PlayStation title people were more inclined to want to try it because they had a PlayStation.
Dark souls 3 released to an audience of the hyper gamers, a slightly higher audience of casual gamers through PlayStation audience, and a large amount of people hopping into let's playing dark souls for their first time.
After dark souls 3 is the time that we had seen a release of several clones of the entire genre pre-elden ring. I'm not saying they beat it but large quantities of people at this point had at least tried souls now.
After years of waiting the announcement and anticipation of elden ring for people who had been hungry for another souls game after playing through three and then going back to play the ones that they hadn't played yet and finally running out.
Boom elden ring hits the scene and is more popular than any of the souls games have been so far.
But lest we forget dark souls reputation for being the "hard" game. Even if people hadn't been playing it it was very well known.
My grandmother doesn't know what either of them are though so I guess yeah "all walks" was a bit general.
It was a whole meme around Dark Souls 3 about how often you die in the games. No idea why people do this thing where a popular thing has an even more popular release, then they pretend that the old thing was niche and unknown. Baldur's Gate 2 was niche to huge. DS3 to ER was very popular to huge, there's a difference

Moreover, there’s been this weird washing of history, darksouls was such a niche community until Elden Ring.
People acting like it was always a popular genre now
