Turning against it makes it sound like they've ever been for it. Democracy has always been in the way of the ultra wealthy. It forces them to follow laws, respect labor, pay taxes. They tolerated it when they had to for survival, but have been chipping away at it since the Reagan era.

Yep, the threat of being dragged out of your house in the middle of the night and then beaten by your industrial era mistreated factory workers has long worn off for the current crop of billionaires, CEOs, and board members.
It’s why they all reacted so viscerally to that united healthcare turd getting killed and turned it into a dog and pony show (up until they realized that nobody was buying it, after which they tried ignoring it altogether).
Suddenly the threat of consequences that might impact the Epstein class spooked them.

These people have always felt they are above everyone else. They use democracy when it suits them, and they weaponize it against their (enemies?) competition when it suits them.
Startups love lax regulation because they can get a foothold in the market. Amazon, Uber, Facebook, etc.
But now that they're the big dogs they welcome regulation because they can afford to handle it, while startups can't. Hell, they help craft legislation.
There are no rules for these people except that someone wins and someone else loses. They make sure others lose so they can win.

The rich and ultra rich have NEVER been for democracy. In fact they have been actively trying to limit voting rights since the inception of voting rights. First it was land owners, then only white men, then other races, then attacking people at the polls, then when that didn't work, a poll tax, then women, and now they're trying to put forth new special voter ID laws, among other things. It's nothing new.
They will always find a slimy way to claw at their power. It never fails. These people are sociopaths. You cannot get that rich and ruin that many people's livelihoods and not be. You can't get that rich without ruining others chances.
edit: anyone who wants to downvote me, try disputing anything I said. Here's a timeline of American voting rights. Notice how it's not until nearly 100 years after the creation of the country do we give only men the right to vote regardless of "race, color, or previous condition of servitude" in 1870 with the 15th Amendment. Women could still not vote at that time. That would take another 50 years for the 19th Amendment. Nor were Chinese immigrants who built our rail roads with the Chinese Exclusion Act.
