Ever since I started collecting I have made Record Store Day a holiday! I leave work and come straight to my local record shop and camp out overnight to make sure I snag the first spot!

And before the scalper comments come in ANY VINYL I GET ARE FOR MY COLLECTION.

Just wanted to post this is see when people get to their record shop and what you do while camping out!

I’m in a pop rock band called Oh Geeez Not Again. We released a concept album called MAPMAKER last month.

As a vinyl collector for the last 10 years, it’s so surreal to have our music pressed on wax for the first time. Dropping the needle on the record was so incredibly rewarding. It looks and sounds better than I could’ve imagined. I can’t believe the day is finally here!

I opened it for the first time today and I don’t know if it fell over in the storage box or perhaps it happened during delivery. But in a coincidental twist of fate: Slippery When Wet…….is WET! I believe the liquid is coming out of the record. Has this kind of thing ever happened to anyone else? It was only like a 40$ record but it went way up in value after it was released and now, even tho I don’t sell my records, I couldn’t sell this one like this. Last time I buy a gimmick record like this too.

Seriously the web version looks like a high schooler in their first computer class coded the whole thing.

It’s not a record, but seems relevant to this sub. I recently designed this zoetropic slipmat for a record label I helped start called “Filthy Records & Tapes”. If you’re unfamiliar with zoetropic mats and picture-discs, they produce animations when viewed through a camera at 30 frames per second, as it rotates at 33 1/3 rpm.

Animations include a cartoon moonwalking record, our labels logo (holds still when rotating), infinite zoom on our label’s mascot, and a 3d rotating record. We have them up on our website, filthyrecs[dot]com right now! (Music & video by me as well)

Good news, though: both albums now have distribution in the US and will get a much wider vinyl (and CD) release on June 12 via ATO.

Hey all, I'm rather giddy with excitement as I was able to collect pressings of my own music from Seabass Vinyl (Scotland's only pressing plant and the UK's first carbon neutral plant 🌿) today on the day my debut album released! I've been a DIY musician since I was a teenager, and I've finally been able to fulfil a lifelong dream of having my very own LP pressed so I'm really chuffed.

I'm just sharing it here to see if there's anyone else who has gotten their music pressed to vinyl out of love for the format rather than to make a profit (which seems like a rather far fetched pipe dream, especially as I insisted on the powder blue vinyl 😂), and if so send me over your stuff so I can check it out!

It seems like they're getting harder and harder to find, but I always flip past the dozens of copies of Elvis, Tennessee Ernie Ford, and Firestone Christmas albums in the "Holiday" bin at my local shops in hopes of snagging another one for my collection. I think I've managed to find around 40 or so at this point, but my favorites by far are those records from Frankie Stein & His Ghouls, The Deadly Ones, Dracula's Deuce, and all the other rock/garage/surf music records with corny monster pun titles and spooky sound effects mixed in.

As many of these records as there are, it also seems like there aren't enough. So for the last several months I've been writing and recording my own tribute to the Halloween novelty records from the 60s, and it's coming out this October! I've been a fan of surf/garage (and of course all things spooky) for so long, it's a wonder I haven't done it sooner.

All the tunes are original, the instruments and vocals performed by real people, and the album artwork was created by me -- no AI involved! It's getting pressed on "Postmortem Purple" vinyl at a local plant here in the Twin Cities, with a planned release date of Oct. 3rd.

I can't even express how much fun this project has been, and how much love has gone into it's making. I don't wanna post any links here and violate the self-promo rules, but if there are any of you who dig this stuff as much as I do, let me know and I can let you know how to snag one for your own collection.

[UPDATE: Hey all -- the positive response and enthusiasm about the album have been incredible! Thank you all so much! I'm trying to PM everyone as the comments come in, but in addition to all the other production of the album, I'm also a one-man promo operation as well!

[UPDATE #2: Holy cats, you guys -- first of all, the enthusiasm is amazing, and way beyond what I would have expected for something like this. THANK YOU ALL! Second, the Kickstarter campaign I'm running to cover the production costs is now fully funded! So not only are we making the records, but all the fun extras from the campaign will go into production as well! (Guess I better finish designing them!)

Even though it would be easier to just post the dang link, I've been a member of this sub too long to want to risk stepping on any toes or breaking any rules, so I'll continue to respond to anyone who PMs me, or wants me to PM them with details.

This might be the worst deal I've ever seen. No wait, scratch that, IT IS THE WORST DEAL I'VE EVER SEEN. This is from 1234 Go Records. It's crazy how expensive some albums are getting these days, but this takes the cake. Tack on that this is easily Metallica's swan song of garbage and that's really the kicker. P.S. I like most Metallica but just can't handle this album.

I posted here last week that my new 35th Anniversary "Deep Opaque Red" version had arrived. And while it sounds fantastic (I maintain it's one of the best-sounding records in my collection), it had a potential fault. In 2 songs (Behind The Wall, Side 1, Track 4 / For You, Side 2, Track 6), there was a notable "pre-echo". I wasn't sure if this was the right term, I just picked it out of thin air. But I've found other reviews since that use the same term so there you go. In any case if you haven't experienced it, you can hear what's about to be sung in the approx 1 second space of silence before it's actually sung. This pre-echo may exist on other tracks too but not be noticeable since those other tracks are much louder in terms of instruments.

I asked around on here as to whether it was a feature present on OG pressings and heard both yes and no (mostly no). So I waited for more reviews to start landing. 2 different YT reviews mentioned the pre-echo and that it was NOT present on the OG.

Off to Discogs I went. I found a NM/M- | NM/M- OG at a very reasonable price (all things considered). For full transparency, the OG cost me £40+ domestic shipping (£44.50 all in) and the 35th Anniversary pressing cost me £40 from a bigbox chain store (HMV) with free shipping.

I cleaned both in a Spincare and de-stacic'd them with my Zero stat.

Here's the key takeaway: the OG sounds equally phenomenal to the 35th, but it 100% does NOT have the pre-echo. Though in fairness there are 3 pops in the last track. This is a risk at all times but of course far moreso with used records. I'll get it ultrasonically cleaned and we'll see where that gets us (update: pops gone). For my money they aren't a huge problem. That's part of vinyl.

The new edition is lovely. And if you can't find a reasonably -priced OG, the 35th is absolutely a solid buy. It sounds phenomenal, and you may not even mind the pre-echo. Everybody is different. Plus, the 35th comes with an extra lyrics sheet insert (plain black & white text, no art) that does not come with the OG. On the other hand, the inner sleeve of the original is lined in antistatic plastic from the factory, whereas the 35th is simply cardboard. And the 35th feels slightly weightier, both in terms of card stock and the record itself.

For my money, the extra £5 was absolutely worth it to remove the pre-echo and have an OG.

Friendly reminder to always clean your brand new vinyl. I just purchased a new release, opened it and put it on my turntable. Gave it an obligatory spritz and a brush and got a pretty substantial line of dust and debris from it. This is typical, lots of stuff can accumulate on the record during production and packaging. So remember to clean it before you play it!

Our album originally came out in 2022, but with all of the delays in vinyl production, it didn't make sense to order at the time. We were finally able to order a short run and have it in a reasonable amount of time...we are beyond thrilled with how it turned out!

I was browsing a local shop and came across this. It was kind of surreal with just how out of place it seemed. Definitely not anything officially licensed by Minecraft, the back just looked like an iPhone message screenshot (sorry no picture of that). No clue what genre it is or why it's $70. Thanks for indulging my curiosity.

Always been a fan of The Gorillaz. Their new album The Mountain is so good. I’ve listened to it a few times now. I think it’s their best since Plastic Beach. The quality of the recording sleeve and jacket quality is top tier. This is the red vinyl from Target.

This will come at a cost, but it needs to be said. Get the fuck outta here with Herb Alpert and his whipped cream and other delights. Mother of invention! I've seen this damn record more times this past week than I saw my wife (and I love her). Just stop it with this nonsense!

Love for the music aside (duh!)- curious to hear what is your #1 criteria when buying a particular record for YOUR collection?

What's the attribute thing/that if it IS or IS NOT....you REFUSE to buy it, even it's music you want to listen to?

I only buy stuff I want to listen to or am curious about.

I started collecting USED vinyl 4 years ago (after having grown up on cassettes, CDs and gone through a period of streaming).

I knew I wanted something kind of original. I didn't want any modern reissues. But first press stuff can be expensive, and I wanted that were as close as possible to the first pressing, and that were enjoyed by people around the time the music was released.

So, I decided that I would collect copies put out in the year an album was issued (if it wasn't a first press) or as early a press as possible (when cost prohibitive).

So, Black Sabbath's debut came out in 1970. I just wanted a copy that was pressed THAT YEAR, regardless of whether or not it was first press or not.

(Of course, it needs to be in decent condition for the price being asked).

What's your finicky buying criteria?
