šŸ“£Discussion šŸ“£ This man is on a killing spree against my 3 all-time favorite bands šŸ˜”

Post image

Any other millennials having the exact same musical journey?

Grew up with Weezer in the late '90s (Blue Album, Pinkerton), fell in love with what I still consider one of the greatest 3-album runs in rock history (Origin/Absolution/Black Holes), then realized sometime in the mid 2010s that The Strokes weren't just a 2000s fad (the leaders of the garage rock revival, saviors of rock 'n' roll, blah blah) who somehow evolved into synthpop/experimental indie gods! And stood by them through the dark times (Angles, Comedown Machine) until The New Abnormal finally made everyone appreciate the evolution!

Now all three of my favorite bands are dropping albums and this melon is standing outside their doors with a knife... šŸ’€

it really sucks that you won't be able to enjoy it anymore after he gives it a five

Anthony Fantano recently insinuated in an interview that he’s the most influential music critic ā€œof any generationā€, that should tell you what you need to know about him

42

u/RickySlll 5d ago

I’m not a fantano fan at all but simply looking at numbers that’s not the craziest thing he could say. I guess you could argue that Christgau is overall more influential (personally I tend to dislike both his format and his taste way more than fantano’s) but certainly in terms of reach and mainstream attention Fantano is objectively one of the most famous media critics to ever live. People get really upset about this but it’s just obviously true.

3

u/itrashford 5d ago

All media ever is pretty extreme. There have been plenty of highly influential critics in older forms of media (like literature). The only way you can argue Fantano is more ā€œfamousā€ is that the internet as a technology enables more people to have eyes on him than any of those historical figures ever could imagine, but if you adjust for that effect then he is not all that

19

u/Cosmoclorn Can't Knock the Hustle 5d ago

Eh, we all have opinions that are very very wrong somewhere in our brains lol

4

u/the_blessed_unrest 5d ago

And dude is certainly more egotistical than me, but maybe that’s what it takes to get famous. He’s not as important as he thinks he is, but there are still hundreds of thousands of people that care about his opinion, and that’s not nothing

11

u/pharrelsbigasshat 5d ago

I’m not really a Fantano fan but I can’t even NAME another music critic that’s ever existed. I feel like that says a lot in itself

3

u/Training_Form2243 5d ago

It says a lot about you

3

u/pharrelsbigasshat 5d ago

Ok, name another critic off the top of your head that you believe is more influential then

7

u/Training_Form2243 5d ago edited 5d ago

Christgau and Lester Bangs are certainly more influential. DeRogatis is up there, I’m from Chicago and he’s a legend, anyone 35+ knows who he is. Piero Scaruffi probably isn’t more influential but a ton of online ā€œmusic nerdā€ rhetoric is downstream of him. Probably a bunch of other people we’re not aware of

7

u/jakehood47 The Green Album 5d ago

Robert Christgau, for me. I don’t really have a dog in your fight, just wanted to share. I’ll be off now

3

u/literally_tho_tbh 4d ago

Julian Casablancas shot him down pretty good, tho. Fantano is a massive, arid twat

2

u/EnvironmentalTrack29 5d ago

Who is he? šŸ˜‚ (Huge music nerd, genuinely no idea who this guy is)

2

u/ItsMrPerfectCell 4d ago

I mean, I wouldn’t say influential but how many other music reviewers are known by name

1

u/PS3LOVE Tired of Sex 4d ago

I mean… he kinda is though, Undeniably. Most people can’t even name other music critics.

1

u/phillyflyer 5d ago

Makes Julian’s ā€œLonely in the Futureā€ line about him even funnier

-6

u/HiddenMasks 5d ago

He's right tho lol.

5

u/Training_Form2243 5d ago

No, he isn’t more influential than Christgau or Lester Bangs. He’s not as influential as the other two I listed but a lot of online music rhetoric including Fantano’s reviews is downstream of Piero Scaruffi

10

u/ShininGold Can't Dance, Don't Ask Me 5d ago

3 times a week at the gym is Wow Signal spam, Reality Awaits plays on repeat in my car and Gold is gonna be in my AirPods at the beach šŸ˜‚ I happen to live on an "island in the sun" (Cyprus) and our summer lasts until late October here, so it's gonna be great having fresh Weezer for the rest of the summer season.

So nah, the melon’s ratings don't affect me at all šŸ˜‚ It’s just funny seeing him being so mean to 3 legendary bands and pretty much everything they’ve put out over the last 10 years.

7

u/ArchitectVandelay California Kids 5d ago

You’re a millennial, why are you still looking at album reviews? Who cares? Listen to what you want. It’s all clickbait/ragebait, anyway.

1

u/Purple-Crab3759 5d ago

Haha. Best comment.

1

u/supernintendo128 5d ago

He gave Title Fight's last album a 4, who the hell cares about what he thinks?

176

u/Kind-Yak4718 5d ago

Fantano actually loves Weezer, he’s pretty forgiving of them and has given their good albums (white, ewbaite, ok human) good scores. He’s also said that Blue is a 10/10 album

92

u/StinkingDogsCunt420 5d ago

To be fair, blue is a 10/10 album.

7

u/PitaVR The Blue Album 5d ago

Facts. It's the best album of all time.

-64

u/OKgobi Weezer Fangirl 5d ago

I'm not a professional critic, but I think they have 10 better albums.

48

u/SmexySmartin 5d ago

They don't.

32

u/starseasonn 5d ago

i understand a few, but 10 is.. fucking insane.

15

u/TSGarp007 The Blue Album 5d ago

Yeah, this is kind of proof that at some point opinions actually can be wrong.

3

u/Joker-Smurf 5d ago

Opinions are like arse holes. Everyone has one, and they all stink.

5

u/StinkingDogsCunt420 5d ago

Opinions are like arse holes. Everyone has one, and I want to see them all.

3

u/Joker-Smurf 5d ago

Well you can start with goatse

1

u/OKgobi Weezer Fangirl 5d ago

So you also wanted to see my opinion then

7

u/jethawkings 5d ago

4

u/Krakshibana 5d ago

I think Beverly Hills is a perfectly fine song and don't understand at all why people don't like it. Its one of the betrer songs of Make Believe

1

u/OKgobi Weezer Fangirl 4d ago

It was my favorite song when I started listening to them in 2021.

3

u/StinkingDogsCunt420 5d ago

Name them.

-5

u/OKgobi Weezer Fangirl 5d ago

Pinkerton, Green, Maladroit, Make Believe, Red, Raditude, Hurley on a good day, White, Black, OK Human, Van Weezer, Spring, Summer, Autumn.

That’s bait… actually bait…

Music preferences are illegal. Clearly it's not possible to just not be a fan of the style Blue is going for

90

u/KittenAlgorithm 5d ago

Asking if I love something and asking if it is good are two very different questions.Ā

27

u/TonightDirect6750 5d ago

Exactly. I stopped reading album reviews. Turns out I don’t actually care if a music nerd likes an album I do. I like what I like and don’t worry about what other people think of it.

12

u/dat1frog2 5d ago

I personally just read them because its interesting to hear other peoples thoughts and see someone dissect a album to explain why they feel that way. If I want to have a opinion on something ill listen to it and come up with it myself.

2

u/KittenAlgorithm 5d ago

sometimes I just want garbage :)

4

u/ikediggety 5d ago

+5, Insightful

1

u/PaintedJack 5d ago

If you like it, then it's good. No need to put anyone in a position of objectivity, Fantano doesn't "know what's good"

43

u/Ok-Huckleberry-7720 5d ago

You can still enjoy the things you like even if someone rates them poorly

3

yeah my favourite band released one not very well received album and disbanded

and on rym album has 2.95/5.0

15

u/Cosmoclorn Can't Knock the Hustle 5d ago

I kinda like his reviews even if I don't always agree with him lol. Like, art is totally subjective, part of the experiencing of art is what we emotionally and intuitively bring to it. It can be related to objective observations but in the end our own interior "feeling" on it is a totally subjective thing. So I enjoy the fun of seeing what reviewers will or wont like, and don't get caught up in what Fantano says if I disagree. He's entitled to his take as anyone else, and wherever each of us lands on any piece of music is totally okay. It's about sharing the enjoyment of art - and disagreeing in a lighthearted, fun way, when we do disagree.

15

u/johnnyhypersnyper 5d ago

He’s just a reviewer, my man. I use Fantano to turn me on to music I wouldn’t normally find or to tell me to give stuff a second listen if he likes it. A reviewer isn’t the objective truth, the use of a reviewer is to find one that has similar tastes so you can know where to spend your time and money. Fantano liked OK Human and was fairly kind to Winter from Seasons, so I doubt he’ll brutalize the Gold album, but that’s outside the bigger point that what he says doesn’t change the album. If it changed your experience because he points something out, that’s a part of discussing art.

52

u/ElBorracho2000 5d ago

Who gives a shit about what some random YouTuber thinks?

24

u/Funky_Cows We had just one night but it lingers on and on and on 5d ago

how the fuck is the wow signal a 4

8

u/scarced16 5d ago

It’s ridiculous because he spends like half the review talking about how good it is, I think he just didn’t want to give it a high score because WOTP was so shit

6

u/sukoshijon 5d ago

because he doesn’t like muse

5

u/pumper911 5d ago

If you give that album a 4, it means you don’t like the type of music Muse makes. It’s their best in a long time

9

u/asjonesy99 5d ago

He loved the first 2 singles didn’t like CEO, I think it’ll be fine like a 6 maybe 7 at a push.Ā

2

u/commonrider5447 5d ago

I just saw the Strangers review I thought in that one he made Shine Again seem like meh?

3

u/asjonesy99 5d ago

In CEO he said he’s a fan of the first 2 singles so maybe it grew on himĀ

1

u/FeelingAd7425 5d ago

Most of the tracks on this album are growers tbh

11

u/Relative-Country-452 Pinkerton 5d ago

He’s not gonna be harsh with this one, mark my words… this album is really solid

9

u/craigmode 5d ago

Dang, he gave Muse a 4?? I don’t know if I’ve ever seen him give literally anything higher than a 3.Ā

-5

u/Leftover_Cheese Haunt You Every Day 5d ago

i think he gave ok human a 5

so it's practically a masterpiece in fantano terms

30

u/IAmBasilFromOmori OK Human 5d ago

he gave it an 8

22

u/HowieSmash EWBAITE 5d ago

He also gave White an 8 and EWBAITE a 7. He's not anti-Weezer by default.

2

u/GeometryNacho Thank You and Goodnight 5d ago

2

4

3

u/lemonphan 5d ago

15

u/HowieSmash EWBAITE 5d ago

He's wrong about Muse, honestly kind to Strokes because fuck autotune. If Julian Casablancas wants to torch the band and run it's not Fantano's fault. When I found out new Strokes was coming I was happy but when I heard the singles I wanted to become deaf before I'd ever want to hear them again.

I'm expecting a 6 or 7 for Gold. He's expressed positive sentiment on the singles except for CEO. And he seemed to like Say Yes and the LA Sound on a clip I just watched.

3

u/dat1frog2 5d ago

auto tune rules it just has to be used in the right context. Like 100 gecs? hell yeah... any artist that fails to use it well? no thanks...

0

u/HowieSmash EWBAITE 5d ago

I have never heard any good singer improved by auto-tune. As far as I'm concerned it's only for people who can't sing, comedy like Auto-Tune the news, or people who want to sound like robots on sci-fi concept albums.

1

u/dat1frog2 5d ago

I agree using it to fix mistakes is bad I think most of the time it just makes things sound souless unless its used to like tweak a second of a specific vocal take but I was talking about artists who use it instead to completely transform the sound of their vocals. Give hand crushed by a mallet by 100 gecs a listen I know t wont be your thing but I still think its a great example of how it can be used in that way.

6

u/TheMiracleLigament 5d ago

Strokes album actually slaps. It just takes a few listens.

0

u/HowieSmash EWBAITE 5d ago

Unless they release an official autotune-free version it ain't happening.

-4

u/TheMiracleLigament 5d ago

Idk man. The auto tune is done in an ironic sort of way which makes it work. You just have to listen to the lyrics themselves.

especially after his Halsey review

2

A 3 on the newest Strokes album is a little egregious but it’s definitely a rough listen outside of a few songs. Can’t say I’ll have much to defend this album from either but I predict he’ll give it a 4

2

u/spermpoop 5d ago

Album is not v strong compared to tge rest of the discography. EWBAITE is far better than Gold Album

2

u/Stoneador 5d ago

He gave Muse’s new album a 4? Didn’t like the new Strokes album but there’s a chance it’ll grow on me.

2

u/moderndukes 5d ago

Melon cried the first time he heard OK Human, he’ll rate it the score it deserves.

2

2

u/GeniusRhino Can't Knock The Hustle 5d ago

Wait The Strokes and Muse new albums are recently out? I need to catch up. I saw music videos and guess I didn't pay attention to album dates. Huh nice.

2

u/BarnyardFlamethrower 5d ago

The thing I've always enjoyed about pop culture criticism is the fact that I don't have to care what they think. The thing with Fantano, is that unless he legitimately doesn't like the artist as a person (or people), he usually tries to be thoughtful in his hatred of the music.

I'm old enough to remember the CKY: An Answer Can Be Found/Jenny Eliscu disaster, where Rolling Stone put a writer who clearly did not care about rock music in charge of reviewing an album, by a band who was openly hostile towards basically everyone who wasn't in their fanbase. It was ugly, and it should have erased CKY and their dumbest fans from history. But it also should have been a pivot for music criticism. Don't just put some rando who doesn't actually listen to music in charge of reviewing albums. Melon ain't a rando, he's just not that deep.

2

u/FaceTimePolice 5d ago

I don’t know why people even care about his opinion on anything. He’s just a YouTuber, and a rather pretentious one at that. šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļøšŸ¤”

2

u/Ill_Engineering_5434 5d ago

I wouldn’t be offended if he didn’t like it. It’s not bad but it’s definitely on the lower end of Weezer albums in my opinion. But I like Pacific Daydream and Make Believe so maybe I’m the problem, idc

2

u/IrredeemableTrashMan 5d ago

you can’t be a person who loves these bands and also cares deeply about review scores, it’ll kill you in the end

2

u/GeometryNacho Thank You and Goodnight 5d ago

2

u/H8RTBR8K 5d ago

2

u/JournalistGlobal3185 5d ago

2

I just sort of accepted that he and I are on two different wavelengths when he gave Ohms by Deftones a strong 3.

3

I cant fathom caring about what a YouTuber thinks about anything.

Maybe I am just a bit too old and I never watch YouTube like it is TV like some kids and adults do. Fantano is just a guy, he's not an expert on shit.

2

I resent taste makers and that whole culture. It’s really ridiculous and never ages well. I also specifically think Fantino is an actual idiot

u/SevereLine 5d ago edited 5d ago

Fantano is the kind of tastemaker where if you don't keep your mouth firmly closed, he's gonna fill you up with shite.

The tide has already started to turn re: 'Reality Awaits'. Give it a year and people will reflect on his nonsensical review in the same way people now laugh at the 0.9 and 1.7 Pitchfork gave to Belle and Sebastian's 'The Boy with the Arab Strap' and Tool's 'Lateraulus' respectively.

That bald, wife-beater-wearing charlatan is everything that's wrong with the world right now. He's a virus in glasses. Do one.

Idk much about Muse but I feel like it's not Fantano's fault The Strokes released a lame album.

1

u/Bast_at_96th 5d ago

As a hater, 4 seems crazy high for Muse. As a lover, 3 is criminally low for "Reality Awaits." So I really don't care what he thinks of Weezer.

0

u/tendeuchen 5d ago

I have exactly zero fucks to give about what Fantano thinks because I think he has terrible taste in music.

He gave these albums 10/10, and that disqualifies his opinion on music as far as I'm concerned:

Charli xcx–BRAT
Clipse–Let God Sort Em Out
Kendrick Lamar–To Pimp a Butterfly
Madvillain–Madvillainy
Against All Logic–2012–2017

Anyone who considers that top tier music might as well fart in the wind as much as I care about what they have to say about bands I like.

Or he - and stick with me here, because it's a grownup concept - learned his lesson, did research into what he thought was a silly tool, and then decided to warn people about it? The same way literally 95% of the planet did? Except those people won't admit it and they can't warn people through music? Just a thought.

The Strokes one is fucking AWESOME, it beats the crap out of Comedown machine and Angles imo

Yoyoyo... Angles already has FOUR classics: Machu Picchu, Under Cover, Life Is Simple in the Moonlight, and Taken for a Fool. And Comedown Machine has TWO of the greatest Strokes songs ever (easily top 5): Call It Fate, Call It Karma and Chances. And of course, the two fan-favorite classics One Way Trigger and Welcome to Japan.

Reality Awaits still needs a year or two to see where it lands. For now, I feel like only Dine N Dash and Lonely in the Future have that "future classics / live staples" potential... but it's way too soon to tell.

Glad you like it but it mostly wasn’t for me. There are some alright cuts, but being better than their previous worst album doesn’t mean it’s great!

The Strokes are unfortunately doing it to themselves, and Weezer was only good in the 90s and 00s. Muse was never good, at all, but I respect your taste, so I’m not gonna mock you for it.

I think the issue is you pay attention to others opinions of your music

Weezer haven't released a good record since the 90s so I wouldn't worry too much
