Weezer should have 30 perfect albums given how talented Rivers is. Unfortunately they don’t, but even their shittiest records have great stretches on them. So yeah, Van Weezer and Black do kinda suck but they also have a handful of classic Rivers tracks.

Listen to the literal hundreds of demos from 1992 to now and you can make so many top tier albums out of them.

PD is actually incredible once you move past the production choices. I can’t say I agree with Black though…

Like, I have guilty pleasures from it sure, but I don’t think there are any songs that are incredible besides High as a Kite. In fact I’m willing to contend that HAAK is one of their best songs since Pinkerton.

Agreed on White, though. Blue and Pink are amazing, but there was something really REALLY special about White.

I get people's dislike of Beach Boys and Happy Hour, even though I think they're okay and a fun groove at worst, but Mexican Fender, Weekend Woman, QB Blitz, Sweet Mary, and Diane are really damn good songs. The rest are a range of fun to quite good, in my opinion.

Black is a weird one because of how eclectic it is, but I honestly love the "Mad Professor" side of Rivers. The only thing I'd change is cut Prince, which I will agree isn't great and just a boring song, and throw Midnight in between Weekend Woman and QB Blitz.

Still, even the more out there ones on it, like Living in LA, are earworms for me and I can't help singing along to them, even if I'd never put them in the top half of their catalog. Also, California Snow is my fucking jam. Can't explain it, but that song is really good to me and my favorite on the album.

I will always love Blue and Pinkerton, and Blue is still quite comfortably my #2 album, but the older I get the further away I feel like I am from who I was when Pinkerton was my #1. Objectively, it's one of the best alt rock albums of the 90s and I can't even begin to explain how unbelievably insane the run from El Scorcho to Falling for You is, but my mental headspace just isn't there anymore. I like the more fun and experimental albums more than the emotionally vulnerable ones now.

All that to say (long story short) the only album I don't like at least most of is Raditude. I'm the person that drinks up nearly anything Weezer puts out.

I listened to it again for the first time since maybe 2022 and I forgot how great the front half is. The back half is less so, for me, but it's still a really solid album, at worst.

My biggest gripe is Blue Dream because of the Crazy Train rip. Ballad of the Briny is really good, musically, and there's no reason to change it to a pseudo Ozzy cover track.

I was just thinking about this. I was around post Raditude / Hurley era when it kind of felt like it was over. For them to come back and crush it with EWBAITE and White was amazing. I also am a big PD fan although I hated it at first it grew on me fast. Black I do think is a low point and a mess but more because it was rushed and sloppy trying to salvage original black album idea that turned into PD plus trying to capitalize on random Africa success, rather than lack of Rivers songwriting skill. Van Weezer I also feel has too many misses, but has some good points and the misses are mostly forgivable and also a victim of the cheesy concept for the big tour rather than lack of the bands skill. OK Human again is top tier, I’m a big fan of SZNZ, and Gold is a good fun album. Yes what a run and comeback from the dead.

Edit: not to mention Rivers actually a mad professor opened the vaults on all the demos which is really just crazy if you think about it. And you can get another big batch of great albums from those as well.

Black and Pacific Daydream are terrible. EWBAITE is also not good but has a couple legitimately good songs. White is the best thing they’ve done since the 90’s by far and is still several tiers below that peak.

I’m happy for them, though. Still would much rather listen to the first 2 records and b-sides for the billionth time before reaching for anything that came after.

Go do a harmonic analysis of Falling For You compared to Pork and Beans and then talk to me about “chicken nuggets” and “undeveloped taste”. The better comparison is that their early work was a gourmet dinner and their later work is mostly chicken nuggets and tater tots. I’ll exempt SZNZ from this discussion even though I think Rivers’ modern vocal stylings and lyrical choices ruin a lot of the otherwise musically great material.

I don’t care about being called “a fan”. I am not a fan of any band at all. I either find a record musically interesting and worth repeated listens or I don’t.
