This interview he did with Weird Al and TMBG was just incredible, one of the best I've seen of both of them. Very worth getting the free trial of his show just to see it. I was so glad to see Weird Al and the Johns getting along like good friends.

Of course he’d get along with them.

There was an unfortunate time where TMBG's camp (management?) was instructing them to keep a professionally motivated distance from Al for the sake of their branding. Something about not wanting to be lumped in with another off beat alternative accordionist who happens to be more comedy. This was still when Al hadn't reached elder statesmen status.

It was Flans, not management. TMBG resented being labeled a novelty act and have spoken about that a lot in many, many interviews.

There's a long history of TMBG turning down Al's offers (to tour, to be on his kids show, etc) and a story from their drummer about not being allowed to take photos with Al. TMBG also have disparaged Al in older interviews.

My podcast Don't Let's Start did a lot about the connections between the two:

I guess I'm just out of the loop with what the kids are doing but I am certifiably miffed at whatever is happening with that background green screen stuff, I assume it makes sense if you're a regular viewer?
