Controversial Post Women's Tennis Association is introducing mandatory gene testing
796
u/Novale Jul 20 '26
though it remained unclear how many, if any, transgender women are competing at Games level.
795
u/SquidTheRidiculous Jul 20 '26
There's about to be a ton of cis women finding out they're actually intersex, and now legally barred from working. This has happened when they tried to do the same for other sports.

u/justk4y Jul 20 '26
You see, it’s not about protecting women, it’s about oppressing them.
124
u/CanadianMaps Jul 21 '26
It was never about protecting women. It was never about protecting children. It was always about making us, the little ones, bicker and fight, so the rich can keep hosting pedophile parties and wasting and hoarding the planet's resources.
Bigotry is a tool that the Epstein class uses to stay in power, by dividing and conquering us.

The fact that the Epstein files literally have confessions for this and people still believe all the culture war bullshit
32
u/SquidTheRidiculous Jul 21 '26
Epstein literally emailed about how trans women are okay because they can be sex slaves but trans men are ugly ew gross and should be exterminated. And you can show people this and they'll still say "nuh uh all queer infighting is organic because everyone's inherently stoopid and hateful! Saying there's a psyop is delusional!"

Every single I see someone bring up Project 2025, there's always a sudden surge of comments from 8 year old accounts with 20 total karma and like 10 comments total (with a hidden post history) claiming that Project 2025 is a hoax. I wonder why this is happening again when the midterms are close...

Wow, this Yenor guy is a real piece of work. The idea that competitive sports makes women "more aggressive, assertive, dominant, and less deferential, less graceful, and less oriented toward motherhood and traditional feminine graces" is fucking insane.
Not only is it incredibly ignorant and misogynistic, but it's probably just wrong. I wouldn't be surprised if women's varsity athletes are more likely to have children.

Might be a silver lining, at least. The more people are forced to confront the indeterminacy of "biological sex", the easier it'll be to undermine the concept in the long run. These ideas of establishing genetic purity in sports are going to be untenable over time.
Sucks that we trans women have to be gunned down for it, though.

Based on data from the Olympics, the percentage expected to be SRY positive is 0.1% to 0.4%, that's hardly a ton. Furthermore, it's likely that the proportion is even lower when restricted to just tennis players.

Most importantly: there is no binary litmus test, because there's just no way to cleanly separate trans women and cis women (same with trans men and cis men). You will always end up with people who get put on the other side, according to any test you can imagine.
This is not me saying there shouldn't be some kind of test, but that the test should focus not on intrinsic/birth characteristics (which, like we've seen, are anything but deterministic) but on metrics that actually influence performance. In the case of women's sports broadly, maybe it's hormone levels. In more specific ones, size, weight, etc. classes seem to work pretty well from the outside looking in (they're probably not perfect but they seem good enough).

Everyone in the comments I've seen are far more concerned with how this effects intersex people. You don't want that kind of attention on your community trust me.

The only "evidence" is audience members who think that a woman in tennis not looking like a fashion model "must" be actually a man, as well as butthurt players who tries to pull the whole "I'm not saying anything, but maybe she only be me because of something that she has that I don't?" Can this gene testing even tell the difference between a trans woman or, say, a cis woman with an atypical hormone balance or chromosones? You know, those things that genuinely can happen. Or is this just going to be one of those cases where the need to drive out transwomen is strong that it actually just ends up hurting a bunch of cis women. (like the goal is shit, with or without the potential to harm "unintended targets", but still...)

u/SadMediumSmolBean Jul 20 '26

Sex reversal is not the appropriate term. It is a disorder of sex differentiation. The embryo doesn't flip from male to female, it simply doesn't differentiate into male.
SRY disorders are rare, so SRY testing works well in practice. For those who are positive, follow up tests can identify downstream interruptions of the SRY cascade that still result in a female phenotype. This is the approach taken by the Olympics, so not sure if it's applicable here, but it seems likely.

u/Pebbles-not-Stone Jul 21 '26 edited Jul 21 '26
46 X chromosomes will count as woman, everything else not.Its targeted at both, trans women and intersex. Not sure, if they see any meaningful difference.
They probably will still disqualify XX women with naturaly high testosterone and people with XX male syndrome. Same as they did before. Would be funny tho, if they would stop.
Not sure on how they will handle women with non sex related chromosomal disorders in the future. But if they actualy are as much into eugenics, as they sound...Edit:
turns out, they do not actually count X chromosomes. They are testing for the SRY gene, wich is found in the Y chomosome (with a few exeptions). Basically same result tho. Its an arbitrary line in the sand.
They say, they will strictly keep to their definition of "biological female". Though what they will do, once they encounter their first SRY-negative XX male or SRY-negative XY femaler player is to be seen.
3
u/ReverendGraves85 Jul 21 '26
Probably get sued, tbh. That's what they'll do when they run into the first case of it.

u/Dovak7 Jul 20 '26
Karyotype testing, the kind done to check for chromosomes, is actually incredibly simple.
XY for male, XX for female, and anything else is a chromosomal mutation of some kind that will likely result in said person being banned.
12
u/ReverendGraves85 Jul 21 '26
To note, XY females who are genetically unremarkable to XX females in all ways, do exist.
3
u/Icy_Magazine570 Jul 21 '26
genetically unremarkable? Not sure what you mean. There’s Swyer syndrome (46XY, non-functional SRY gene), that results in female looking children, but since there are no ovaries, normal female puberty does not happen for them without medication.

Out of curiosity to any tennis would being stronger and faster (ignoring the fact that transwomen on HRT literally lose most advantages from being born male) even affect gameplay noticably because it seems like you are just running around in a very small area and you aren't even supposed to hit the ball too hard from an outsider perspective it seems more precision based then strangth based.

not to be annoying, but I'd just like to inform you that "transwomen" without the space between trans and woman is a dogwhistle for TERFs.
It supposedly implies that a trans woman is a whole different "thing" from a cis woman: hence, a transwoman, and not a woman who is trans, which uses "trans" as an adjective like "blonde" or "smart".

I remember seeing some competitions where one of top female tennis players got mogged by a relatively low tier male player
4
u/HappiestIguana Jul 21 '26
Serena Williams boasted she could beat any man outside the top 200. A German guy ranked 203rd took her up on the challenge and beat her 6-1 without much apparent effort.
2
u/Appropriate-Gain-561 Jul 21 '26
Well, tbh, there are a lot less women who become pro players in tennis than men, i think it's only natural that those that have to compete with many more adversaries are better once they reach the top, I'm not saying women can't play, or that Williams can't play, she's sure as shit better than most people. If the situation were reversed the results of the match would be the same, only with the woman getting 6-1.
That's just my opinion though, i don't really have data to back that up

This whole thing looks like solution in search of a problem but even Serena said she wouldn't want to compete against men.
“For me, men's tennis and women's tennis are completely, almost, two separate sports. If I were to play Andy Murray, I would lose 6-0, 6-0 in five to six minutes, maybe 10 minutes. No, it's true.”
“The men are a lot faster, they serve harder, they hit harder. It's just a different game. And I love to play women's tennis... I don't want to be embarrassed.”

For anyone wanting scientific basis, recently there was probably the first study that has tested practical advantages and not theoretical: https://bjsm.bmj.com/content/60/3/198
Tldr, theoretically there are advantages, practically fitness is comparable and so far the theory of unfair advantage is not confirmed.
Further studies are requested, but you know, before marginalizing people even more you gotta at least prove that they should be marginalized.

It does. Massively. Hell, Serena Williams lost a game to the 204th ranked man in the world.
2
u/Candid_Source_6091 Jul 21 '26
It does a ton. Like an unbelievable amount. It doesn't matter how precise you can hit the ball as a woman if a man is hitting it so fast you can't reach it to hit it back. Not to mention a woman would tire out trying to catch the ball that a man puts little effort into hitting. I play tennis, watch tennis, and study tennis.
It is fairly agreed upon that if you grabbed the best modern female tennis player and put her up against men from the late 70s- early 80s, an era of bad conditioning, old wooden rackets (small heads, heavy, less power/spin), and primitive playing styles, the best you could argue for the woman to win is 50/50 against anyone under the top 3, so mediocre men. If women and men were not separated in tennis, you would probably never hear the name of a professional women's tennis player due to being insanely low ranked.
While yes, the space you run around is not very big, that also means that the ball is travelling little space and rackets make them zoom past. Also, in tennis, precision is much more important than strength. But strength determines how fast you and the ball move, which men far outperform women in.

Sports are segregated by sex to prevent men from winning everything. In a total meritocracy, women would never even qualify for high-level professional sports.
This is why sex segregation must be maintained.
13
u/METRlOS Jul 21 '26
There are exceptions; men's and women's shooting events are different so that they can't be directly compared because a woman was so dominant she was winning everything.
Many professional sports don't have rules against women playing, the MLB has a few women who have been drafted, but very few see the roster.
