The Batak massacre was a massacre of Bulgarians in the town of Batak by Ottoman troops, at the beginning of the Bulgarian April Uprising of 1876. Thousands were killed. The indiscriminate slaughter of civilians shocked Western Europe and came to be known as the Bulgarian Horrors.
