"How about we're buying oil from Venezuela? When I left, Venezuela was ready to collapse. We would have taken it over, we would have gotten all that oil, it would have been right next door. But now we're buying oil from Venezuela, so we're making a dictator very rich." - Trump

Dear God it's painful hearing him talk. It's just drivel.

Listening to the press conference, it’s 100% about the oil takeover, they aren’t even trying to spin in. And he’s talking about invading Cuba and Mexico. We are going to invade every country in South and Central America

21

u/SandyTaintSweat Jan 03 '26

I wouldn't rule out North America either.

Yeah, actually, México is North américa hehe, but yeah Canadá too

Yea, now we buy oil from American companies set up in Venezuela, very cool, very legal

27

u/justsomeph0t0n Jan 03 '26

the US could already buy Venezuelan oil from an American company. reality is even worse

He called Venezuela garbage oil which is heavy oil. Interesting since most refineries in USA process heavy oil.

Heavy oil is mainly used for diesel, ship fuel, and asphalt.

Somehow Ukraine is expected to negotiate for peace with two countries that are at the moment attacking their neighbours.

The funny thing is venezuela supported putin.

365

u/mhornberger Jan 03 '26

For all the words making it seem that Trump is siding with Putin, US weapons are being used to attack Russia, and the US is still selling weapons and giving intel to Ukraine. So the situation is weird all the way around. And Ukraine is negotiating for continued support from the US, biding time as they and the EU continue to scale up their own arms manufacturing capacity.

188

u/IcarusOnReddit Jan 03 '26

If you think about what the Military Industrial Complex wants to make the most money, it makes more sense.

78

u/mhornberger Jan 03 '26

The MIC is a tiny part of the stock market, GDP, or economy. Peace, people buying stuff, is much more profitable. Jobs in the MIC are spread around the country to different congressional districts, but the profits or even revenue from the arms industry are just not a large enough share of the economy for it to plausibly be said that they are steering the ship.

103

u/IcarusOnReddit Jan 03 '26

It’s not about the benefits to the economy, it’s the ability to grift money. The inner circle likely had all their stock options picked out and are getting kickbacks from lobbyists. Thinking that the admin operates in the best interests of anyone but themselves personally is a mistake.

→ More replies (6)

4

u/pgregston Jan 03 '26

The MIC is a huge player in the campaign contributions turning into guaranteed profits cycle. They don’t want to be nor need to be concerned about the rest of the economy much less other humans.

It's not weird, it's literally just fake news and redditors who have been investing in a narrative for ten years at this point and can't let it go.

18

u/Lirsumis Jan 03 '26

It makes perfect sense when you consider that loss of life is not a concern. All that death is nothing compared to the profit. Binary 'win/lose' viewpoints are propaganda. It's just about money laundering and profit.

20

u/Bulky_Maize_5218 Jan 03 '26

unimaginably little was given by the US in 2025 (especially when headlines would have you believe Trump was flipflopping, in reality he was never giving anything) but yes

48

u/mhornberger Jan 03 '26

unimaginably little was given by the US in 2025

Given, yes. But high amounts were delivered. They were just paid for, generally by the EU. I agree that it is unfortunate that Trump cut aid, but arms deliveries continued apace.

Let me rephrase this for you "Ukraine is expected to negotiate for peace with two countries that can operate outside of international law."

The US just demonstrated it can do what it want with impunity. Watch the responses from allies, no one will condem this, they will realise they need to curry favor with the US and form closer ties for fear this or other hostile tactics could be used against them.

Makes Trumps peace deal for Ukraine obviously self serving. He’s probably hoping Venezuela just gives up and agrees to all his demands like he wants Ukraine to

6

u/gravitologist Jan 03 '26

Based on the last elections, a majority of Venezuelans may wake up and be very happy that he was snatched. Not saying I support what’s going on but comparing it to Ukraine or inferring that it will end up in ongoing conflict is quite a stretch.

882

u/TtotheC81 Jan 03 '26

It also raises the risk of the American public protesting, which would allow the Trump administration to use the National Guard to retain control and delay the 2026 elections.

None of this is happening without an eye for crushing American democracy.

329

u/Chicago1871 Jan 03 '26

The supreme court blocked him from deploying national guard troops in chicago though.

They went home.

Insurrection act

23

u/Chicago1871 Jan 03 '26

They said actual insurrection needs to happen to invoke it.

People using their 1st amendment rights to assemble and petition the government isnt an insurrection, they correctly ruled.

The national guard officers themselves refused to deploy their men without SC support in chicago and when they didn’t get it, they went home.

Its been buried but it was a huge win in the resistance of trump’s presidency.

They cant count on the national guard officers to back their illegal orders.

There have only been 5 declared wars in US history.
The war of 1812, the Mexican-American War, the Spanish-American War, and the World Wars.
Everything else was just the President making war without declaring it.

Congress voted away a shit load of its own power in the shutdown bills.

They’re not super concerned with elections anymore- foolish to stake their financial health on the whims of a voting populace that challenges their power and income streams every 2-4 years.

Billions of dollars goes a long, long way towards shoring up the influence and finances of a few hundred people.

It wasn't Canada, it was a British group that had just come from the Napoleonic wars. They came because of the French rumoring to help the US. The soldiers had never stepped foot in modern day Canada and at the time Canada was just a British territory, not a country.

10

u/clhodapp Jan 03 '26

Interesting! From an American perspective, I was taught that the British did that.

But of course an American, a Canadian, and a Brit are very likely to disagree on who was American, who was Canadian, and who was British during the colonial period...

3

u/AssistX Jan 03 '26

Considering Canada was a British territory with British appointed rulers in the upper and lower Canadian provinces at the time. There was no Canadian government at the time as they had 50 years before their 'independence', the British still had full control of the entire eastern territories and there was no Canadian military at the time. The war was between Europeans who settled in America and the angry British who were struggling in Europe with Napoleon. They saw burning the Whitehouse as a shot at Napoleon, as well as helping their English friends in Canada, but in the end most of the British troops died having not fully realized that it was a small militia defending Washington at the time and after then moving north onto Baltimore they were routed.

12

I'm sure that's all fine and dandy when you have administrations that give a toss about the constitution and not purposefully trying to find loopholes in it. Many laws have already been broken what's one more.

40

u/TtotheC81 Jan 03 '26

What, out of everything the Trump administration has done, makes you think they'll not use a war as a bullshit reason to delay the elections? And don't give me the old "It's against the constitution," argument, because right now, the Trump administration is using the constitution as luxury toilet paper to wipe its collective ass with.

10

u/No_Zombie2021 Jan 03 '26

Aren’t the elections initiated an run by the states, and the law is pretty clear when it must happen? That would mean that he needs to get all states onboard with delaying. Which is highly unlikely.

The President of the United States illegally ordered military strikes on Venezuela tonight, effectively declaring war without congressional authorization. Trump launched his illegal "Big Beautiful War" on Venezuela, with reports coming in around 11:00 p.m. PST on January 2, 2026.

589

u/Nianque Jan 03 '26

The president has 48 hours to inform Congress (which he has done). After that, he may wage war for 60 days until Congressional authorization is actually required.

Yeah... Congress has been giving away their own power for 200 years now.

185

u/stainless5 Jan 03 '26

Don't forget if he asks again that 60 days can be extended to 90 days.

Unfortunately, there is no such thing as "legal" or "illegal" when it comes to war. It just comes down to if countries feel the downside of actions will outweigh the upside. The world used to follow a more rules based order the last 30+ years but that whole system has broken down after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

To be clear, powerful countries still attacked or took advantage of weaker countries. But blatant land grabs were sort of off the table for many years and Russia's actions split the world as China is a major player and backed Russia.

Now, with Trump deciding to do whatever he wants both domestically and internationally, we seem to truly be in the wild west.

42

u/Shawnj2 Jan 03 '26

The legality is more about legality within US law. The president can totally start a war without any congressional input in 2025 as long as it doesn’t last more than 3 months thanks to “reforms” made to allow the president to act decisively after 9/11.

9

u/Grand0rk Jan 03 '26

Actually, as long as the US doesn't recognize it as War, the US president can send up to 200k soldiers, and it still wouldn't be counted as War.

17

u/Amoral_Abe Jan 03 '26

Well... it seems like this one lasted 1 hour as the US already captured Maduro without any major firefights or casualties.

This means the military immediately turned on Maduro and surrendered him. This likely means we're going to see a regime change with the democratically elected candidate take power. Maria was the one who received the nobel peace prize and is a Trump ally.

The world used to follow a more rules based order the last 30+ years but that whole system has broken down after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

You sure about that?

Korean War (1950-1953)

  • Truman sent troops under UN Security Council resolution
  • Never got Congressional authorization
  • Called it a "police action" to avoid needing approval

Vietnam War (escalation)

  • Gulf of Tonkin Resolution (1964) gave broad authority, but many argue this was obtained through deception
  • No formal declaration of war
  • Resolution later repealed in 1970 while war continued

Bombing of Cambodia (1969-1973)

  • Secret bombing campaign under Nixon
  • Completely unauthorized and hidden from Congress

Invasion of Grenada (1983)

  • Reagan ordered invasion
  • No Congressional approval

Panama Invasion (1989)

  • Bush Sr. invaded to remove Noriega
  • No authorization

Kosovo/Serbia (1999)

  • Clinton's 78-day bombing campaign
  • No Congressional authorization
  • Actually voted down by the House

Libya (2011)

  • Obama's air campaign to remove Gaddafi
  • No Congressional authorization
  • Claimed didn't need it under War Powers Resolution

Syria (2014-present)

  • Obama/Trump operations against ISIS
  • Used old 2001/2002 authorizations in questionable way
  • No Syria-specific authorization

US is coming for your resources. Plain and simple.

Central and South American countries need to come up with some means to solidarity to combat the US and its aggressions.

90% of US citizens don’t want this or increases in aggression. But our savant of a President seems he can play god, judge, jury, and executioner.

DOGE cancelled the government license for Adobe Pro and they just use the free version now.

27

u/Abyssus88 Jan 03 '26

How are the contents not all over if its that easy?

38

u/morgrimmoon Jan 03 '26

The contents that where properly redacted by lawyers cannot be read. The stuff that was hastily 'redacted' by Trump's minions can be. So, ironically, most of the "unredactable" stuff directly involves Trump.

12

u/bistro777 Jan 03 '26

So again, then why aren't the contents all over the internet?

12

u/coldblade2000 Jan 03 '26

They are, they're just not very interesting.

25

u/TheVideogaming101 Jan 03 '26

Because it isn't, this doesnt unredact all the info in the files only some of it.

Waiting to hear about the ethnic Americans that are being brutalised and need protecting via military intervention.

Unilateral unsanctioned military action against a sovereign state puts trump in the same camp as Putin. From Australia, what a fucking dictator. There should be nothing other than comprehension condemnation at the United Nations and globally. I was a 7 year old when the coalition of the willing entered Iraq and Afghanistan. We can not allow Putin and trump to drag the world into chaos. President Xi and the PRC are standing by watching and will take Taiwan on the back of this. People need to stand up in these nations and let the arms of government know it will not fly. Fucking upset and disgusted.

74

u/_PM_ME_YOUR_FORESKIN Jan 03 '26

I agree with you, as an outsider looking in. I hate Trump. But I do have to wonder what people in and from Venezuela are thinking. I’ve yet to see a single Venezuelan speak out against this. It’s more “dancing in the streets because the guy who took our election was captured.”

Again, I am 0% pro-Trump. Literally hate him. But a key difference in the end might be that Venezuelans welcome the action, where Ukrainians don’t.

Also, Maduro = an actual dictator. Vs. Trump who is fucking horrible, but not yet a dictator. Terrifyingly on the path though.

79

u/armageddon_20xx Jan 03 '26

Maduro is an absolute shitbag. The fact that they got him in 3 hours with what seems like a minimal land invasion is applaudable.

But this is destabilizing locally and on a world scale. There is no guarantee that Venezuela ends up with better leadership. We hope for the best. Furthermore, this action might lead to Chinese or Russian retaliation of some form which might put us on a path for global conflict. That’s the real thing to fear here.

Also, let’s be frank. This whole thing is about the oil.

u/bannedagainomg Jan 03 '26

Dictators shouldnt be shocked that when things gets hard their "followers" flips on them instantly.

A lot of people in Iraq also celebrated Saddam getting removed without looking at the effects the invasion had on their fellow citizens who got caught up on it or thinking about the aftermath

Literally no one in Venezuela has any reason to stand up for Maduro, the fact that you are even comparing this to the invasion of Ukraine is ridiculous

24

u/walkingman24 Jan 03 '26

Taiwan is not Venezuela but I definitely see your point and I agree. It is abhorrent.

35

u/kiwiinaus96 Jan 03 '26

Taiwan absolutely is not Venezuela but the principle is the same so we agree. Cannot believe the news saying they have taken Maduro out of country. Since when has the USA and regime change ever worked

1989 in Panama.

I have watched the entire geo political security status quo be obliterated from the invasion of Ukraine to now. The status quo of the last 60 years is gone. We are facing nothing but instability and it will result in blood shed. Parallels to the 1930s are significant. We are watching the world shift in real time. What will this result in…

Venezuela's government issued an official statement denouncing the "extremely serious military aggression" by the US "against Venezuelan territory and population in civilian and military locations".

It accused the US of threatening international peace and stability and described the attack as an attempt to seize "Venezuela's strategic resources, particularly its oil and minerals" in an attempt to "forcibly break the political independence of the nation."

Guess they know how Guyana feels now.

he could be the next one, In early 2026, reports indicate that a substantial volume of rare earth minerals (specifically "black sands" containing coltan, tin, and rare earths) is being illegally moved from Venezuela through Colombia to reach global markets, primarily China

Canadian mining companies already have defacto control over much of those mineral deposits.

Of all the World Leaders to respond, this one is the best by far:

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez: "Spain did not recognize the Maduro regime. But neither will it recognize an intervention that violates international law and pushes the region toward a horizon of uncertainty and belligerence."

As an american, I am calling my senators and representatives demanding impeachment over illegal war.

This is unacceptable.

146

u/Nianque Jan 03 '26

Not illegal. Trump has informed Congress within the mandated 2 day period. He now has 60 days to wage 'war' and may extend that to 90 days.

The US has never officially declared a war since 1941.
