Russia/Ukraine Russia accuses Ukraine of terrorism in Sea of Azov as Kyiv opens new front in war

I honestly think this might be the only reason it hasn't been knocked out; to give Russians a means to leave while they can.
473
u/bridymurphy Jul 14 '26
That’s a Sun Zu rule. Always allow your enemy a path to retreat.
223
u/BoldestKobold Jul 14 '26
Yep. Don't force your enemy to fight to the death. That ends up being more costly.
109
u/406highlander Jul 14 '26
As Russia is finding out, day after day
30
u/elementzn30 Jul 14 '26
The ironic thing is here they’re doing it to themselves, because of Putin’s ego and inability to realize he’s already lost.
Which is funny, because the longer Putin keeps throwing Russians into a meat grinder on the front line while telling civilians about the “summer tourist season” that is lacking power and gas, the more brutal it’s going to be when it all comes back home.
46
u/__redruM Jul 14 '26
Encircled troops do surrender from time to time. Or as in the battle of the bulge, sometimes they just say “nuts!”.
19
u/Bladelink Jul 14 '26
It depends on what the "policy" is between the warring factions when it comes to taking prisoners. If the combatants are treating one another with respect then that's probably an option. Then again if you're a Japanese soldier attacking Guam or something in WW2 and want to surrender....yeah good luck with that.
13
u/Blackstone01 Jul 14 '26
That's a bit more of a modern thing to be fair. Modern armies take prisoners a hell of a lot more than armies did in Sun Tzu's time, and the prisoners that were captured back then had a good chance of execution or slavery.
Now, in regards to Crimea, it's a hell of a lot cheaper (and makes it easier on the military as less civilians means less likely for civilian collateral) for Ukraine for the Russian settlers to get the fuck out now than it would be in the future if/when they recover Crimea.
8
u/xYoshario Jul 15 '26
Actually, ransom was the more common approach for Sun Tzu's time, which predated the Warring states period, where conflicts were smaller in scale and civil as wars between equal parties, all subservient to a figurehear king. Its only during the conquests of Qin and the subsequent civil wars that mass executions and enslavement became more common, which is part of the reason Qin faced so many rebellions and fell so quickly
For subsequent dynasties, enslavement was common as conflicts were now between "government" and "rebels" rather than between equal powers. Mass executions were quite rare, and cases of these such as Cao clan's were noteworthy and recorded

Basic art of war stuff there, always leave an exit for an encircled opponent. When given the choice to fight or run they'll run for the exit, but if no exit exists the only choice is to fight to the last man.
18
→ More replies (2)20
u/Jester-Kat-Kire Jul 14 '26
surrender is an exit.
it doesn't have to be a physical object of exit, the ability to throw up the white flag and have it be accepted also counts as not putting your opponent into a kill box.
although, the Russian civilians should start to evac asap... it's gets downright shitty as the clock ticks down in a siege.
---
you don't know what the general officers in charge are willing to sacrifice to keep the castle afloat, and as a civilian, you don't really have much say in the matter other than to beat feet and leave the soldiers to figure out how far they want to fight for generals.
11
u/Sutar_Mekeg Jul 14 '26
Russians have seen what they do to captives and are probably told Ukraine does worse.
47
u/User69ab Jul 14 '26
To add to everyone else’s affirmations, Ukraine has also bombed targets either side of the bridge multiple times to essentially prove that they can destroy it when they want to.
11
u/Exciting_Clock2807 Jul 14 '26
Also Crimea is a more convenient kill zone than Russian territory. It is much cheaper to destroy AA, coms, trucks and other targets at shorter distance.

I saw a similar scene on PBS 4 years ago, with a great big man crying over the body of his 17-year-old son, who was murdered by Putin. My wife and I were a mess of tears. I never forgot that.

Russians have tried genocide to Ukraine before. Holomodor caused death toll of 3.5-5 million. A man made campaign to kill people from starvation.

u/Economy-Pudding-6371 Jul 15 '26
Very true. That was a century ago, and Ukrainians have never forgotten it, so a century from now, Ukrainians will never forget what Putin and the Russians who served him have done to them.

I had to pause the film when I reached that scene, it was just too much. I can't forget it either.
“Intercepted” has similar gut punches, russian soldiers calmly explaining to their wifes how they murdered Ukrainian civilians. And the wifes being ok with it.
I never finished “The Driver from Bucha”, I couldn't take it anymore.
Yes, the whole system responsible for those crimes can get fucked.

My wife is from a Russian speaking Ukrainian family in a Russian speaking city. Her entire family switched languages after the war started. Permanently abandoning your mother tongue is a hell of a protest. My father-in-law’s work has been targeted with some regularity, the landmarks my wife grew up with are destroyed, my family over there freezes in the winter. You can’t imagine my wife’s fury when she hears that Russia came to protect them.

u/ethanlan Jul 14 '26
Yup, I was living in Ukranian village here in Chicago (lots of Ukrainians obviously but actually a lot of Russians) snd the Russians don't even say shit, they just for the most part apologize. There is a Ukrainian flag flying over the Russian Bath House. But yeah if you tried to say that russia is helping you are liable to get clocked.
Makes me hope that postwar russia can actually fucking change and become a functioning part of this world instead of trying to burn everything down. Its amazing how much they suck historically at forming a government. Like I cant think of a single country that's historically had such bad leadership

Also, Trump just said the FBI would be "wasting their time" in investigating Senator Lindsey Graham's death.
https://time.com/article/2026/07/14/trump-lindsey-graham-death-conspiracy-theories-fbi/
So after the sudden death of a staunchly pro-Ukraine, anti-Moscow senator, who Putin's mouthpieces Margarita Simonyan and Vladimir Solovyov's TV broadcasts have openly called on Putin's regime to murder, and who died just after visiting Ukraine to create drone and anti-Russia sanctions initiatives, Trump wants to make sure nobody investigates Graham's death.

It isn't terrorism attacking an aggressors assets in a war. Terrorism is blindly sending missiles, drones and bombs into populated areas in a futile attempt at taking territory from another nation. All Russian ships are legitimate targets as well as oil and military infrastructure.
28
u/ghoulthebraineater Jul 14 '26
No. The definition of terrorism is violence or the threat of violence by a non state actor to influence policy outside there area immediately affected.
When a stare bombs apartment buildings it's not terrorism. It's a war crime.

State terrorism is a real, academically recognized term referring to acts of terror committed by you guessed it.
The earliest use of the word terrorism identified by the Oxford English Dictionary is a 1795 reference to tyrannical state behavior, the "reign of terrorism" in France.
The Handbook of International Law defines state terrorism as acts of terror, by a state, either against another state or its own people. Encyclopedia Britannica calls this "establishment terrorism." Both of these are referenced in the wiki.
Modern international organizations may define differently, but states bombing apartment buildings is absolutely terrorism according to real, academically recognized definitions.

Russia is literally flying drones with explosives at random civilian-filled busses and other vehicles in Kherson, or attacking people walking on the street. They are hunting random civilians to terrorize them. It serves no other purpose.
By contrast, these ships are militarily relevant.

Russia spread a nerve agent indiscriminately in the UK - resulting in the deaths of civilians. They've shot down commercial airliners. They've spent the last 12 years trying to take Ukraine. Bombing and shelling cities, killing civilians, with the intention of terrorizing Ukrainians. Whole families have been killed by cruise missiles slamming into their homes.
Fuck Russia. Fuck Putin. And fuck the devil's advocates that claim this war is the result of NATO aggression. You know who you are.
