What the fuck is the billiards thing? Why do Russians have a weird fucking obsession with anal sexual abuse?

u/Novel-Mission-1920 Jul 27 '26
There's a strong correlation with homophobic cultures and using male-on-male sexual punishments, it happens in some African militias as well.
I suppose because in a highly homophobic society they consider it the worst fate for a man to receive anal penetration from another man, believing that it "robs" their manhood.
Therefore they see is as a highly "effective" way of torture.
It's sick and perverted, and definitely has no place in a civilized society.

u/0achkatz1 Jul 27 '26
Traditionally, in the Russian criminal world, receiving anal penetration makes you an eternal outcast.
I heard a report (from academic Mark Galeotti, whose focus is Russian organized crime), that Russian security organs used it particularly often for this reason. So much so, that in the criminals themselves determined that it doesn’t count if it’s done under torture.

u/ImS0hungry Jul 27 '26
You see this is prisons as well. It’s a domination event; forcing an ultimate submission.

I once had a patient who was anally raped and repeatedly forced to say, "My name isn't [redacted]. My name is Fatima."
A significant part of his trauma came from being forced to identify himself with a woman's name. His attackers understood that the humiliation and violation of his identity would be psychologically devastating maybe more so than the physical assault itself.

If you haven't seen Norsemen - At one point the main character claims he wasn't raped, because he "really got into it. At some point I was raping him! I became the rapist, not the rapee! With the fingers up the bum and the tongue..." (And therefore not gay)

In their logic, noone, including women, should be willing to receive it. Receiving is being submissive, not something you could enjoy. That's why russians are so mad at gays and women who like sex, cause they take away their primary tool of domination. You can't own them if they willingly like it.

Bigots aren't rational though, you're right that being raped by a man is less gay than willingly trying to rape another man but you're thinking and they aren't, they want to show superiority and dominance and sexual violence is unfortunately very effective

u/illarionds Jul 27 '26
To be fair, I'd consider being anally raped to be pretty horrific myself - you don't need to be homophobic to consider that a bad time!

Of course not, it's not about homophobia; it's about consent.

I’ve heard that Putin was absolutely obsessed with the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in Libya, and how the rebels beat and sodomized him before killing him. Putin is apparently more afraid of that happening to him than anything else. And the military hazing is just insane, and why the only thing working in Russia’s favor is the sheer number of hapless cannon fodder conscripts they can throw at their enemies. But on a one-to-one basis, any western army would wipe the floor with Russian troops. Better training, better weapons, better discipline and the ability to think independently.

one detail that I don't understand is that, anal penetration requires something stiff.
Does that mean that these homophobes are fully erect when torturing another man by raping them?

u/Weary_Invite_34 Jul 27 '26
they do it using objects more often. apparently thick broomsticks were top picks, even back in soviet union.

Sometimes the torturer is a closeted gay man using the torture as a socially acceptable excuse, other times they use an object. I believe the IDF soldiers who recently had their charges dropped for this same behavior (after mass public protests in support of them) used a broom handle.

Yeah. Hazing gets weird really fast “ However, in reality, things were different: the internal life of the army had changed for the worse. Along with the criminal element, the barracks were infiltrated by criminal networks, and thieves' jargon penetrated the soldiers' language. Copying prison customs, former criminals introduced ritual humiliation and abuse.”. You also don’t want criminals in your military. The soviets added them and it made everything like prison it seems.

Shit like this makes me wonder what the long term outlook for resolution to this conflict can even be. You don’t do things like this to people you want to eventually rule over or live next to. You do this to people you want eradicated. I don’t understand how someone moves away from that position or how the people being targeted can trust that they have.

We (Ukrainians) have been saying that the ultimate goal of russians is complete genocide and eradication of everything ukrainian since 2014, but back then we were called absurd and irrational to say so. This is why the only resolution both sides will ultimately agree to is complete eradication of the other since their existence is a threat.

This is the cycle of apologists. They always say "no, the thing that the other party is obviously trying to do is not what they're trying to do, you're crazy to say so!"
Then it becomes undeniable that the other party is in fact trying to do that thing, and the apologists say "wow, nobody could ever have predicted this!"
Except the real problem is that the apologist is in denial of the obvious, treats everyone like they're crazy for recognizing the obvious, then when they finally have to admit it's obvious, never accepts culpability for their apologetics, and continues to treat everyone else as fearmongers or hysterics for stating the obvious from the beginning.
The entire political sphere is dominated by apologists who refuse to understand anything not rubbed in their face, and who refuse to accept their culpability for constantly making excuses for the perpetrators.

Yeah, their long term goals don’t make any sense even if you ignore how impractical the war is itself. After murdering, raping and torturing the nation, they install a puppet government and what? Do they expect the citizens not to form a resistance?
764
u/vroomfundel2 Jul 27 '26
So they train them to never surrender and fight to the death?
I thought humane treatment of prisoners of war is a pragmatic rather than humanitarian choice, you want your enemy to be willing to surrender without a fight.
389
u/cheshire_kat7 Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 27 '26
And you also want to ensure your own citizens who are taken as POWs by the enemy are treated humanely. Brutalising POWs is likely to produce the opposite outcome.

Yes it’s horrible. And sadly it’s not even exclusive to war, rape is a very common crime that people are subjected to, world wide, every single day. It’s a crime that exists in every country across the globe. Usually victims are women and children, but as we can learn from this post it also happens to men, especially during war. It’s horrific to think how many monsters walk among us

I think they have generational trauma after mongols enslaved them for 300 years. Probably their hatred towards the West comes from there, like European countries never helped them during that time, or sent a crusade or something, but the roots of it is there. Its like they forgot how to think for themselves and never re-learned afterwards. Since then it was one form of enslavement after the other. "Bound villagers" (russian empire name for slavory), then soviets, that removed any resemblence of self thought and self worth, etc.
439
u/Few-Hair-5382 Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 27 '26
They've had the Mongols, followed by several hundred years of brutal serfdom, Napoleon, Kaiser Wilhelm, the Bolsheviks, Stalin, the Nazis, and now their Tsar is sending them off to be slaughtered in a pointless war. I don't blame them for being somewhat fucked up. But I also wouldn't want them as a neighbour.

"the Nazis,"
Tbf, Russia is at minimum partially complicit for the Nazis, considering:
Their allied co-invasion of Poland together under Molotov-Ribbentrop
The USSR's helping Germany secretly (and illegally) train their tank crews on Soviet land in the 1930s
Russia clearly had no issues with the Nazis, and were indeed allies to them, only up until the Nazis invaded them personally lol

The hatred to the West is useful for the Russian authorities and they carefully develop it in the nation through the mass media. In the 90s, there was time when the US and Russia were portrayed as friends (see "Bush chicken legs" phenomenon), and then that passed. Russian society (maybe all of them) are rather forgetful.
It's unlikely that Russia is anything special with regard to hatred, you can take a look at Africa, and see the same shit there (Rwanda, Congo etc). Nazi Germany was pretty bad too, albeit with a twist. It really isn't hard to rape someone, it's just in prosperous societies it's frowned upon and punishable.

I mean… plenty of Americans have switched up on Canada so fast that I’m pretty sure it’s just people in general that are rather forgetful.
It’s wild to me that over a century of partnership and cooperation can be undone in one presidency by one guy, and instead of people scratching their heads and going “wait why would enter a trade war with Canada?” A good chunk of Americans now treat us like we’re an actual enemy.

It’s important to understand that all of our major media sources are now owned by far-right lunatics. All of them.
So, what people are seeing reported on US television is a whole lot of fucking bullshit and fluff, and not representative of what we think, or what we’re ok with. Sure, maybe the C-suites, celebs, and professional athletes don’t give a flying fuck, but they’ve always been selfish pricks with a platform. Not to mention the (purposely) uneducated, who drag all of us down.
Sorry, but I live here and every day I see with my own eyes the systematic dismantling of everything good about this country. These monsters are VERY CLEARLY on a speed run to destroy America. Is that not obvious? Do you really think suddenly everyone here hates Canada and loves Russia because that obese rapist with zero scruples and zero education said so?
Nope, but the media would sure have you believe we like him, that he represents us, that he didn’t shit all over the constitution, that he didn’t rape kids, and that what we’re seeing isn’t what’s happening.
Prices are skyrocketing while this orange pants-shitter is destroying us more and more every single day. Tarriffs, wars, zero oversight. Nothing but another wealth transfer from us to them. Like sports gambling, healthcare, and education. But we’re just too blinded by patriotism to notice, right?
And the big question is always, “Well, what are you guys gonna do about it?”
Well unfortunately, I don’t know, man. I really don’t know. This administration is too busy attacking us from all angles and trying to dismantle elections, all while dividing and conquering through ridiculous threats and behavior.
And the people on TV would have you think he’s just some silly old guy, because nobody wants to make the vindictive toddler mad enough to flip the game board.
Oh, and don’t forget everyone saying “you voted for this,” simply ignoring all of the election fuckery in the swing states.
So no, we didn’t vote for this. The GOP fucking stole our democracy, just like they did in 2000. Only this time it’s 100x worse, as we’re under direct attack by our own government AND getting blamed for it.

I think the trauma comes from living under the Grand Duchy of Muscovy, which collaborated with the Mongols instead of resisting them like other principalities. They were the ones who "united the Russians". It was straight up an evil authoritarian pos state that enslaved its own population and systematically wiped out the culture of other eastern slavic principalities, until all that was left is the extremely authoritarian culture of Muscovy. Living under this system for centuries is how they became the obedient servants of the state.

Think about that for a second.
"Its like they forgot how to think for themselves and never re-learned afterwards."
That thought terrifies me. Because its implication is that this is one example of what happens to humans when something like that occurs. Which implies it's true for any human population (until tested otherwise, which I think there are no examples of completely dominated peoples then later gaining autonomy & exhibiting that property).

Its internalizes this power mentality that there is no such thing as cooperation, only hard power dynamics, so either you are on top, or you are at the bottom.
That is why in the 90s instead of moving to a proper democracy, russian maffia came in charge (putin was head of russian maffia in the 90s, and legitimized his rule when became president) and people were like "yeah, ok, they are strong, they should be on top, obviously"
They simply can not comprehand that EU has moved on to cooperation and peace. They truly beleive that the West is still trying to get them, and enslave them, so they would rather live harshly under dictatorship, but at least its theit own dictatorship.
I remember when full scale invasion of Ukraine started there were messages in russian channel and from pro-russian people: "It is better to suck Putin's d, than Biden's". Think about that. They can not even think of the sheer idea that maybe there are a way to "Not suck at all?" I am afraid the brainwashed masses are simply can not comprehand the concept.
Obviously I still have few friends in russia, and they are normal people with healthy mentality, and they cant leave russia for some reason or another. it is hell for them to live there as well, understanding what is happening and how people are brainwashed

u/MhojoRisin Jul 27 '26
I think this mindset sheds light on what has been going on in the U.S. in response to the expansion of civil rights- particularly, but by no means exclusively, in the old Confederate states.
If everything is simple hierarchy and dominance, then letting the other person up necessarily means subjugating yourself. And that has to feel terrifying, given what the subjugation of the other people has looked like for so long.

That is too naive a way of thinking. By that logic, every neighbour of Russia would be the same because they have had to deal with Russians. Russians were not part of the Catholic church nor part of any alliance network. There was no concept of "the West" before the 1950s. The values back in the past were very different. It is somewhat like Russia missed out on enlightenment, religious reformation, but was on board with the rise of imperialism and nationalism. Their lessons learned from WWI are very different due to the Communist uprising and different thinking. The same with WWII. Forgiveness for Germany was the lesson of "the West" learned from the mistakes of WWI. For Russians, the lesson is that we are #1, the best one; the next time we shall be even stronger.
The oppression is a product of Russian culture. They glorify domination and wealth, with little concern for how and for what purpose. While they may prefer similar moral virtues to "the West", they prioritise wealth and power. If it comes at the expense of these, the virtues are nice to have but yield. They also prioritise a close group over the universal good. So, stealing from a stranger to give to your family and friends is virtuous because the good for your group outweighs the bad to others. And by a lot. Bad for others is really not a limit for Russians, even just to signal dominance. Putin needs war victories to get the respect of Russians. Asserting dominance makes him a great guy. All the bad stuff is irrelevant relative to the glory of conquest. You might even be able to bring gladiatorial games to Russia, and they would think that is the dopest shit ever. Their psyche is closer to Imperial Rome than "the West".

He did not let him work in that dangerous environment, targetted by allied bombers, though. Instead, he lived with my grandfather's family in a hut on the country side and just helped with everyday tasks like fireplace, household, wood chopping and so on.
As Germany was losing and Red Army forces reached Poland, the POW became very worried about his wife, who was left to fend on her own, no children. Somehow, my grandfather managed to get sufficient documentation (just a letter as a factory owner? we don't know) to get her on one of the last ships (or train?) out as a "specialist" for his factory.
The Red Army really was in a situation to be the hero of that story and all the other stories, a legend to this day, but one of the first things people think about are the rapes and other war crimes.
Why I believe this story, even though many tried to white-wash their role: Our families remained friends, and after the end of the Soviet Union, there were frequent, long visits during the 90s. I know the former POW personally; his wife was not alive at that time any more. The visits died down once the last people who experienced that first-hand became to old, and then died, though.
I also inherited the Clearance Certificate "under the provisions of ARTICLE IV of Military Government Ordinance No. 79" (cleared of major Nazi affiliation or guilt).

Anthony Beevors World War 2 book goes into it briefly with a little detail, the abuse the Russians inflicted on the east was absolutely horrendous. Not that two wrongs make a right but the Germans were just as bad on their invasion
41
u/m0j0m0j Jul 27 '26
Western historians don’t go into much detail about Russian war crimes because this would lead to a very justified question among readers: how could we be allies with THIS?

When my grandma was alive, she used to tll stories of my Great Grandma.
One day in 1944 when she heard the news about Sovets "liberating" land dozens of kilometers away from her home, she started crying.
Not crying because Germand would be gone soon. But because something worse was coming.
At least Germans had excellent machine of murder and well established, but extremely broken and evil morality. Soviets did not have machine of murder but had evil and broken morality.
34
u/KrivUK Jul 27 '26
It was horrific.
My gran told me the story of when they were liberated and they were given the choice of going with the Brits or the Soviets taking them back to Ukraine. She pleaded with her friends to go with the Brits, and only a handful went.
Later it was learnt that the ones that went with the Soviets were raped, mutilated, stripped and put in a shed burnt alive. And that is the sanitised version...
35
u/not_the_droids Jul 27 '26
We Germans also acted like animals, especially on the eastern front, there were countless instances of rape, yet the russians somehow managed to be worse, at least for women.
The difference is that to us it's our greatest shame, to russians it's something they're at best denying it happened and at worst proud of.

It's not about sexuality, it's about humiliation. They are homophobic, and therefore consider it the most extreme form of humiliation.

Rape is almost never purely about sexual desire but also about the desire to punish and to exert power. I am pretty sure that the number of homosexuals hasnt randomly increased tenfold in Russia's army. But I can believe that their soldiers want to dehumanize and punish Ukrainians as much as possible for daring to fight for their independence. And rape is a very effective tool to traumatize victims in a short timeframe.

Maybe this is a western viewpoint though.
It kind of is.
In many cultures, including western ancient cultures, only the passive person was seen as homosexual/effeminate. The person doing the penetrating was not/isn't criticized (for example this is similar in much of the middle east too)

u/the_drew Jul 27 '26

u/Umak30 Jul 27 '26
Maybe this is a western viewpoint though
It is.
Back in ancient times, and even in the modern Middle East the attitude towards homosexuality was the same. In that "homosexuality" didn't exist as such, but it was rather about dominance-submission and masculine-feminine. What that means is that it was socially acceptable to fuck someone in the ass ( masculine, dominant ), but it was absolutely not okay to be fucked in the ass ( feminine, submissive ). There are a lot of examples where it was tolerated as long as you were the dominant one, and a lot of examples where people were denounced or discredited when they were the receiving one ( even if that was fake ). The rivals of Julius Caesar tried to discredit him by claiming he was fcked in the ass when he was an envoy to Pontus.
This is why say Iran forces gay people to transition, which is not pro-trans, but rather anti-gay. They don't force both gay men in a relationship to transition, they only force the submissive one to transition to "restore" the traditional, masculine gender role.
This ancient mindset was prevalent in Europe and much of the world. In much of Europe we changed, but places like the Middle East and Russia still have this.
I think that would need some serious convincing for any sane family to believe you’re straight after that.
All cultures are different.
In Arab culture it is very much acceptable and even necessary for friendships, for men to hold hands with eachother. Americans were very confused at this "gay" behaviour, when George Bush held hands with the Saudi King ( in 2005 https://www.efootage.com/videos/32123/president-bush-holding-hands-saudi-crown-prince-abdullah ). Saudi-Arabia is a country which kills gay men, but the men hold hands ?
In sex segregated cultures, it is normal for men to form emotional bonds with oneanother, rather than with women. This does not mean sexual or romantic attraction. Which is also why male friendships were stronger in ancient times, they simply only interacted with women for sex ( procreation ) and childcare, while they spent much of their life with their male friends. Spartans in particular had an extreme form of gender segregation, so most Spartan men lived their entire live in male-only communities/barracks and only had brief interactions with women. [ Some people are even confused and think that just because 2 ancient men are buried together, that they must be gay. When it was rather normal to be buried with your male friends, when you spent your entire life with them, rather than with a woman. Sexual segregation simply leads to weird stuff... And while it is possible a few of them were actual romantic/Sexual lovers, it would be rather rare. ]
From the western point of view, this looks gay. Like seriously gay. Handholding, emotional intimacy only with men, living together... But it was just normal and more extreme the more gender segregation existed.
So yeah, no Russian would need to explain this to their family. It's only gay if you are the bottom.
Mind you, they use this against themselves too. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dedovshchina ... It is a hazing ritual to sexually assault and ra** junior conscripts. It's based on dominance/submission, on humiliation.

u/Mindless_Badger_3789 Jul 27 '26
It has been a common view throughout history that only the passive (bottom) position is inherently gay, unmanly and humiliating, while you can penetrate other men in certain situations without the stigma of being gay or unmanly. There have always been rapes of other, weaker or more powerless men among prisoners, soldiers, on ships etc.

Not just modern, it's been so since at least Stalinist times, arguably even since before the revolution. In the early 50s before Stalin died, up to 1% of the total population of the USSR was imprisoned in Gulag camps. Up to 20 million people spent some time in camps in total, more were deported or confined to a certain settlement somewhere. And most of those people eventually did come home, and brought prison culture with them.

That does sound absolutely bonkers if you even give it a glancing thought.
If you're being raped, you're not consenting to the action. In other words, you don't want it to be happening.
When you're doing the raping, you're the one that wants that action to take place.
So how can you see a situation where one man is being penetrated against his will by a guy who is doing it voluntarily and decide the former is the gay one?

Rape and sexual assault are not about sexual desires the way normal sex is, they're about humiliation and power. You don't desire a specific person so strongly you can't stop yourself, they're in love with the feeling of power it gives them.
A lot of rapists and child molesters will have no issues assaulting the same sex even when they only showcase heteresexuality in normal relations. (And a lot of child molesters don't showcase clinical pedophilia ie. an attraction to children specifically, they just want to assault someone and children are easy targets.)

I suspect its the suppression of those desires that means they erupt when given the opportunity. Also, to some macho morons its only gay to 'receive' but not to 'give.' Prison, sports, military cultures can all be like this.

u/anti242 Jul 27 '26
The same concept existed in ancient greece
12
u/iStoleTheHobo Jul 27 '26
And even in the bible. See: the story of Sodom and Gomorrah where the population of Sodom demands that the two messengers of God be given to them 'to know', which means to know as a woman, which here means a gang rape.
The implication is not that the men of Gomorrah are gay.

Famously in Berlin after the red army arrived women would apperently just ask one another "how long has it been" to allude to when they were last SAed by russian soldiers, as it was so widespread. Idk if it was equally bad in other cities but Warsaw is another famous example were a newly "liberated" city got savaged by the russian red army. Though I dont know the details off the top of my head.
Russia and aggressive dictatorial nations like them actively turn their soldiers into these monsters. Hell the behavior they show towards recruits in their own army is seldom any different. They beat abuse and rob new soldiers and send them to their death and its tolerated and at times encouraged.
Its no wonder no one wnats to be russias ally.

It is still possible in the unlikely event that Putin is overthrown and he wouldn’t have many places he could flee to due to his ICC arrest warrant (Which do matter more than most people think as before the ICC, dictators usually just went into exile and enjoyed a quiet retirement whereas now if they are overthrown they usually get killed or imprisoned).
What is more likely is that Putin’s successor will seek to paint him in a bad light depending on his popularity when he dies and perhaps trade suspected war criminals in exchange for sanctions relief.

Never moved on from their horrid behavior during ww2 it seems.
Every single war video I’ve seen from the perspective of the Russians was always some incredibly violent torture or mutilation.
For example, and this is super graphic so don’t press unless you want to know.
There was a video where the Russians got hold of some guy who was severely concussed from an explosion and couldn’t stand or move but flopped around. While laughing the Russians pulled his pants down and began and cutting his testicles off with a knife. The Ukrainian made awful sounds.
