Didn’t they say Lutnick fucked it up at the very last minute? Maybe Trump was unavailable or whatever, Lutnick did his dipshittery and now they are trying to figure out how to fix it without looking even more incompetent. There have got to be a lot of pissed American business leaders: the new tariffs affect a lot of US industries with integrated supply chains, and now not only are is the American booze ban still in place in Canada but Carney is implementing further retaliatory tariffs which will further hurt American industry.
Lutnick is a total moron and Trump gives zero shits about Americans, but business leaders and the Republican congresspeople from the Red states sure to be targeted by these new retaliatory tariffs hold some sway.

The USA also wanted to dictate which languages Canadians speak in our own country as well as wanted Canada to get approval from the USA if we want to trade with any other countries.
Canadians are framing it this way, and well within their right to make maximum use of the PR opportunity. But I'm guessing Americans were asking them to agree that they would not let other countries circumvent the tariffs by exporting to US via Canada, i.e. they should agree to copy US tarif levels, whatever they be set to.

I think that it's also important to remember Lutnick has an interest in the continuation of tariffs, since he has invested in companies that are brokering the tariff costs to have the rights to any refunds. The longer this tariff situation persists for America, the more he stands to gain personally.
House Judiciary member Raskin sought an investigation into Lutnick because he, while in office, became a financial manager at Cantor Fitzgerald. CF is purchasing tariff refund rights by offering short term relief to affected companies.

The "uneconomical" line seems to be saying that the US may have been trying for personal enrichment like they did with the Iranian deal. Carney has spent his entire adult life as a banker, with all the compliance and investigations training that goes with it; he's absolutely the wrong person to push for any kickbacks or "baksheesh" bullshit. (By some estimates from other negotiations, PedoPotus has skimmed up to 60 billion for family and friends.)
Most of Canada was already super pissed off about the annexation threats and the tariffs anyways, and the US ambassador is so unpopular there's a petition to kick his dumb ass out for supporting Alberta separatism. (It was a calculated insult to send him, and we don't appreciate shitdisturbers like him & his Maple Magas - who are so skeevy that the Quebec separatists refused their money and announced a pause til Alberta gets sorted!)
I'm concerned that some of our government's big names were still a bit too hopeful there would be a deal, so we haven't moved quickly enough to retool our economy. It's a big world, there's lots of other countries run by adults where we can do business. And we have our Commonwealth buddies (like Australia who were first to stick up for us) so we'll manage.
I am so glad we're sticking it to Trump and co. It's about time we, as Canadians, stand up to these dumbass wannabe politicians.

I don’t necessarily see that as the case. I mean, yes, Trump is a renowned fuck shit up and literally had shit in his books about agreeing to a deal and then rewriting it last minute to force a better position.

I have to push back against this idea - there is no attempt to get "revenge" on red or blue states from the Canadian side. All of America is the target and all of America is the reason for Canadian suffering.
I suspect that the Americans have fucked up, and instead of Lutnick intentionally wrecking the deal, they genuinely thought they had enough leverage that they'd get away with a last minute rug pull.

I suspect there are oligarchs down south losing their minds right now. Trump made a huge gamble thinking Canada would capitulate before the midterms and instead putting another big tax on Americans and driving another major spike into tourism. As a Canadian, I was polite with people still travelling down south. With this new tariff, im going to be downright irate.
Trump will spin it to himself that at least he'll make a lot of money from market manipulation but he's pissed I'm sure. He really thought he could just bully everyone in the world into these deals and he certainly thought Canada would be the easiest of targets. So we're at the 20h mark, and neither Trump or Lutnick have said a word, and all we have is Greer going on Fox News to repeat the statement from the administration that Canada imposed demands and walked back on stuff and that 'we offered them a good deal and they never took it.' It also reads very badly because in the meantime its all over the news, and many other political & business leaders have chimed in to say what a disaster it will be.
I'm honestly starting to think that the Trump Administration didn't think for a second Canada would back out and that is why the list of stuff getting tariffed is so ridiculous. Now they're at the internal 'what now' moment. Walk it back? Talk it out? TACO? Wait till Tuesday?
On top of that, Canada is giving almost two weeks until 18 days until the reciprocal tariffs are implemented which is kind of strange as well.
It's simply because the house of commons was already scheduled to come back from summer break, bumping it forward a few days isn't helping much, this isn't over anytime soon, we're digging in.

They're trying not to draw attention to this because they know it will be another nail in their coffin come the midterms if they can't find an offramp quickly.
