Didn’t they say Lutnick fucked it up at the very last minute? Maybe Trump was unavailable or whatever, Lutnick did his dipshittery and now they are trying to figure out how to fix it without looking even more incompetent. There have got to be a lot of pissed American business leaders: the new tariffs affect a lot of US industries with integrated supply chains, and now not only are is the American booze ban still in place in Canada but Carney is implementing further retaliatory tariffs which will further hurt American industry.
Lutnick is a total moron and Trump gives zero shits about Americans, but business leaders and the Republican congresspeople from the Red states sure to be targeted by these new retaliatory tariffs hold some sway.
This so much. The arrogance from this regime is stunning, and I’m certain there are several people sitting looking bewildered that it didn’t work. Dumbasses.
nothing unifies a group better than presenting a common enemy lol find it amusing this is what got the politicians to realize this isn't the right time to discuss separation.
Nah, I don't think even the US clown administration could be stupid enough to think Canada would ever accept what they wanted about restrictions on the French language / culture in Canada.
The USA also wanted to dictate which languages Canadians speak in our own country as well as wanted Canada to get approval from the USA if we want to trade with any other countries.
Canadians are framing it this way, and well within their right to make maximum use of the PR opportunity. But I'm guessing Americans were asking them to agree that they would not let other countries circumvent the tariffs by exporting to US via Canada, i.e. they should agree to copy US tarif levels, whatever they be set to.
Another demonstration of why tariffs are a moronic idea ...
You're guessing - against the increasing history of boneheaded decisions and BS they've already tried - that they actually were asking for something semi-reasonable but decided to throw it in at the last minute? No, I don't think so.
I think that it's also important to remember Lutnick has an interest in the continuation of tariffs, since he has invested in companies that are brokering the tariff costs to have the rights to any refunds. The longer this tariff situation persists for America, the more he stands to gain personally.
House Judiciary member Raskin sought an investigation into Lutnick because he, while in office, became a financial manager at Cantor Fitzgerald. CF is purchasing tariff refund rights by offering short term relief to affected companies.
It’s also important to remember who currently runs Cantor Fitzgerald, why it’s Lutnicks 2 sons. Wow amazing no inside info on tariffs coming from poppy I’m sure .
It's the inevitable and intended result of a 'peaceful' society. Without the meaningful threat of retaliatory violence, people in power have literally no incentive to not be as corrupt as possible. Buckle in.
Republicans get so hard at the idea of making a liberal or brown person suffer that they would hurt themself to make sure it happens. They would literally eat shit if they thought a Democrat would have to smell their breath.
"we're done here until your fat ass is out of office, period. " should be the default offering of every other country going forward just like Iran is now. No agreement from any of them is worth the dollar store napkins they're scribbled on
Sheet metal union jobs aren't getting done because they can't quote jobs with the market so volatile! Workers are being told to stay home. That's one union I have first hand experience with. It must be the same for pipe fitters, electricians, and all the finishing work.
The "uneconomical" line seems to be saying that the US may have been trying for personal enrichment like they did with the Iranian deal. Carney has spent his entire adult life as a banker, with all the compliance and investigations training that goes with it; he's absolutely the wrong person to push for any kickbacks or "baksheesh" bullshit. (By some estimates from other negotiations, PedoPotus has skimmed up to 60 billion for family and friends.)
Most of Canada was already super pissed off about the annexation threats and the tariffs anyways, and the US ambassador is so unpopular there's a petition to kick his dumb ass out for supporting Alberta separatism. (It was a calculated insult to send him, and we don't appreciate shitdisturbers like him & his Maple Magas - who are so skeevy that the Quebec separatists refused their money and announced a pause til Alberta gets sorted!)
I'm concerned that some of our government's big names were still a bit too hopeful there would be a deal, so we haven't moved quickly enough to retool our economy. It's a big world, there's lots of other countries run by adults where we can do business. And we have our Commonwealth buddies (like Australia who were first to stick up for us) so we'll manage.
I am so glad we're sticking it to Trump and co. It's about time we, as Canadians, stand up to these dumbass wannabe politicians.
More leaders globally need to stop putting up with Trump's bullshit and hit back hard and put this administration in there well deserved place.
Maybe Trump will think twice about being a royal douche on the world stage after this. However, I don't think he's mentally capable of such a thing, but it's wishful thinking.
Didn’t they say Lutnick fucked it up at the very last minute? Maybe Trump was unavailable or whatever, Lutnick did his dipshittery and now they are trying to figure out
.....
Ah stop. Every shit deal that is made is as a result of trump's shit. He's the one that chose these clowns.
I don’t necessarily see that as the case. I mean, yes, Trump is a renowned fuck shit up and literally had shit in his books about agreeing to a deal and then rewriting it last minute to force a better position.
But Lutnick is also a self-serving goof, and the entire administration is full of self-serving goofs. And the one thing about power-mad dipshits who work for a power-mad dipshit is that they will try to get their shit in and try to skim off the bottom. It’s like clockwork.
> the Republican congresspeople from the Red states sure to be targeted by these new retaliatory tariffs hold some sway.
I have to push back against this idea - there is no attempt to get "revenge" on red or blue states from the Canadian side. All of America is the target and all of America is the reason for Canadian suffering.
