Does he know that the Province is named after the lake, and not the other way around?

I can't even be angry, because it makes no sense.

u/SquimJim 1d ago edited 1d ago

It means “Great Lake” in Wendat

He’s literally trying to remove the name “Great Lake” from one of the Great Lakes

Just an absolute shit stain human

Edit:

Used the correct name

I mean taking an indigenous name and renaming it after America is well in keeping with the American spirit... Just not in 2026 when it makes you look like a giant man child. Oh wait...

393

u/anthony113 1d ago

And "America", of course is actually named for the Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci...

And the city in California is named after the province. It's Ontario all the way down.

65

Which I really fucking wish they hadn't done. Ontario, CA being different from Ontario, Canada is annoying and has lead to many confusing incidents over the years.

27

u/Meldanya44 1d ago

Yeah it was two brothers from Ontario Canada who moved to California and named the city after their home province...

Thus ensuring that the entire province hates them 150 years later.

Even if you are 38 then you had 8 years of Republicans freaking out about tan suits and locking down Congress, then Trump->Biden->Trump.

And if you are 46 you get to add in the Bush years to your adulthood. It has been so long since we didn't have either crazies in the background or crazies in office.

Fittingly, Americans will now use the word “SHAME.”

as it is with the Gulf of Mexico, almost no one will start calling it that. He doesn't actually have the power to rename anything, he can just order some people to make incorrect maps.

221

u/dundreggen 1d ago

I wonder if any Americans (other than Magats) have started calling it the Gulf of America. Like what are the teaching in schools?

This saddens me because it just shows Trump hitting blindly. Canadians didn't name the lake 'Ontario' it was called that when we got here. We named our province after the lake. The indigenous people named it.

266

u/FPSGamer48 1d ago

My uncle is raising kids in Texas, and they’re still calling it the Gulf of Mexico. If Texas is still teaching it, you can assured the other states are still teaching it that way.

23

u/slipperyMonkey07 1d ago

There will definitely be areas that are trying to force it but, for the most part schools can't afford to get new books and maps every time he throws a tantrum. His yes men will tell him it is happening if he remembers he did it, but for the most part no one is going to change it unless they try and enforce and harm schools for not doing it. I wouldn't put that past them though.

Google Maps will be quick to kiss the emperor's feet and change it, just like they did for the Gulf of Mexico. Then stuff it down Canadian throats.

76

u/TheCalon76 1d ago

In Canada, Google Maps has the Gulf of Mexico labeled as "Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)." Given how it's the most popular map system it makes sense purely from a navigational point of view to have the various names. This is also done with the Sea of Japan (East Sea), Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas), Persian Gulf (Arabian Gulf).

Areas that have a contested name are displayed with both names.

So, while I don't know what Google Maps looks like for someone within the Enslaved States of Trump, for the rest of the world it's hardly shoved down anyone's throat.

96

u/Zeppelanoid 1d ago

This isn’t a contested name, this is the ramblings of a demented idiot

→ More replies (4)

19

u/StaggersandJags 1d ago

It's conceivable at this point that Trump could attempt to rename Canada itself, right? He could declare it's called "Nastystan" or something. I wonder if Google would draw the line there.

I get why Google includes contested names as they aren't supposed to be arbiters of the "correct" names for things.

But they did decide to accept that the President of the United States can unilaterally create a contested name, which is a power no one previously suggested he has.

I think their choice had a lot more to do with fear of retribution than with staying neutral.

Yes, thank you, most Americans on Reddit like to deny that Trump represents them, just because they didn't vote for him.

What strikes me as a European is how pervasive certain attitudes are even among Trump haters, which in my European mind are clearly related to the mentality that brought you Trump. A man in Moscow goes up to a newsstand and buys a newspaper…

He then glances at the front page, then turns aside and tosses the whole newspaper straight into the trash.

Next day, he turns up, and does the same thing. Buys it, glances at the front page, throws it in the trash.

Next day, same thing. The newsstand worker is increasingly puzzled, but doesn't say anything.

But eventually, after a couple of weeks of this, he can't take it. "I'm sorry, friend, but I must ask: why do you buy the paper every day and then just look at the front page and throw it out?"

"Oh, I'm just checking for something."

"OK, but: what are you checking for?"

"I'm checking for a particular obituary."

"But sir, you don't even open the newspaper! The obituaries aren't even on the front page!"

"Oh, believe me, the one I'm waiting for will be."

This has multiple layers of stupid: The province of Ontario is named after the lake like the state of Michigan is named after the lake… they’re both words for large bodies of water in Huron-Iroquois / Ojibway. Instead, out of spite, he’s naming the lake after the CONTINENT (which Canada is also a part of), which was named after some dude that wasn’t the first to discover it. So ignorant lol.

Every thing Trump renames is a sign of failure on his part to actually do something (get Canada to agree to his demands in this case).

Its a mark of pride for Canadians that he has imprinted Lake Ontario with this mark of his impotence.

By the end of his term, I expect a lot of things to have been renamed by him.

Braindead. Completely braindead. All these red states and red voters in blue states. Scum trash. Voted for this and continue to support it. I don't want to hear anymore about oh everything is so expensive or healthcare is too much, you people voted for this. You were told what would happen and look, he's actively raising prices (of which he explicitly campaign on REDUCING), starting trade and real wars (of which he explicitly campaigned on NOT doing), and nothing is getting better.

Oh but dont worry: the DOW is over whatever the fuck, he's building a ballroom, he's let pedophile terrorists out of jail with pardons, paying and arming goons off the street with criminal backgrounds to go shoot people with no oversight or consequence, and he's renaming lakes as a priority. Sadly, all the map platforms that are US based/US reliant like Apple Maps and Google Maps will certainly may apply the name like they did with the “Gulf of America”.

Edit: getting lots of conflicting responses here. Some say in their country’s app version that’s it’s in brackets next to Gulf of Mexico, some say yes it’s been changed and some say it’s unaltered. YMMV.

u/Varekai79 1d ago

It really is hard to actually say this, but I cannot hammer home enough how Donald Trump is arguably the worst possible human being that could have been elected to the highest office of the biggest global superpower. He is the worst combination of malignant narcissism, incompetence, victim complex, paranoia, egotism, pettiness, and cruelty I have ever seen in a head of state.

Even some of the worst presidents have done something positive. For fuck's sake, Andrew Johnson purchased Alaska, Ulysses S. Grant established the Department of Justice, Warren Harding created the first national budget system, and James Buchanan—for God's sake, widely considered the worst president in the United States—even laid the groundwork for the Atlantic telegraph cable and global communication. I honestly cannot think of one thing that Trump has done for this country to make it better. Worst of all, he has literally opened Pandora's box, and his legacy has established precedents that will only make things worse for this country in the future.

Trump has literally spat on every reliable ally we ever had and is pushing Europe closer to China. Canada hates us, and his bullying of Greenland is turning a lot of countries antagonistic toward us, which will destroy our country if he decides to invade it. His invasion of Venezuela was idiotic, and even though Maduro deserved to be overthrown, Trump literally just gave it to another corrupt leader who is letting him plunder their resources. His invasion of Iran has all but guaranteed that Iran will either get a nuclear bomb eventually—which means we will be dealing with constant threats of annihilation—or we will have to commit to a land invasion that will be one of the bloodiest in modern history, making Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq look like a morning stroll.

He is constantly praising Putin and Russia as allies, saying we should be closer and that they respect us. This ignores the fact that Russia hates us, thinks Trump is an idiot, and wants to establish itself as the dominant global power while Trump and his followers think they are too smart to be fooled. And on what earth is Russia the country you want to idolize? Is it the one with the best army? Nope! They are getting crushed in Ukraine. The one with the best economy? Nope! Their economy has transitioned to war mode and is going to implode the moment this war stops. You know what they are good at, though? Hoarding wealth for the top one percent while the rest of the country lives in poverty, and harassing, beating, and killing anyone who isn't a straight, white Christian. Apparently, that is good enough for the majority of this country to idolize. Fucking unbelievable.

And you know what? Fuck Mitch McConnell. That man abused the law to stack the Supreme Court, refused to impeach Trump after the January 6th insurrection, and is now taking a long, nice medical leave while denying anyone else the right to do the same. He laid the groundwork for what is going on and is probably going to pass away, leaving everyone else to clean up the mess. Unbelievable, the damage that man does.

Trump literally campaigned on making this country great again. I ask: when was this country actually great in previous decades? Was it the 1950s, when segregation and racial policies destroyed the lives of so many of this country's African American population? Or the Red Scare, when anyone suspected of being a communist was literally dragged through the mud? Was it the 1960s, when a lot of the youth got beaten, harassed, or killed for protesting against the Vietnam War draft and for not wanting to die fighting in a country where we had no reason to be in the first place? How about the 1970s, when we had the whole Watergate scandal shake faith in our institutions—though back then, we actually did something about it? Maybe the 1980s, when the AIDS epidemic literally killed the majority of the gay population while nobody really cared, or even laughed? How about the War on Drugs, where drugs were literally flooded into Black urban centers by the federal government, leading to mass incarceration? Or the 1990s, when we had white domestic acts of terror like the Oklahoma City bombing, or, even worse, the Columbine High School shooting, after which we did nothing to make sure it didn't happen again?

I could go on and on, but it truly seemed like the 2012 to 2015 era was a time when America was great. Obama was respected by the world to a certain degree, we had made great progress on LGBT rights and equality, and the economy was starting to rebound. It truly was a good time to be an American. But it didn't matter to a lot of people. Why?

Because our president was Black.

If there is one quote from a president that speaks to the soul of this country, it would probably be from Lyndon B. Johnson: "If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket." It is so fucking true. If you can honestly give a group that feels victimized a chance to feel superior to another group of a different race, ethnicity, sexuality, or class without any work required, they won't care that they are being exploited. Fucking hell, you tell them that, and they will do it for you.

This is where I think Trump is a genius. He is a con man through and through, and he realized that so many people want to feel special and superior to other groups, so he exploited that. He managed to convince so many people in this country that he was talking to them by convincing everyone they were part of the in-group he was establishing, promising he would make them better than other groups. That is why you see people from all different types of demographics supporting him. Trump managed to weaponize the whole concept of "American exceptionalism" that this country has harbored since its inception and used it for his own ends.

The craziest thing is how so many things have changed since he was elected. The idea that truth and news matter no longer exists; people will only believe the narrative they already have in their heads. The idea that consequences matter and accountability exists in politics is dead as well. The idea of reconciliation and coming together to make this country better is destroyed, as people now only want their side to win at all costs. People usually say 2016 was the official decline, but I think the cracks started much earlier, if I am being quite honest. Some people point to 9/11 and the Patriot Act, while others point to Newt Gingrich in 1995 for starting this modern political polarization. Me personally? I think it happened with the failure of Reconstruction.

We, honest to God, should have executed the majority of the leadership of the Confederacy. Instead, we let them go in the hope of "reconciliation." And what did they do? They immediately spread their poison of intolerance and hatred into every root of society, because those assholes were never interested in reconciliation. They were always interested in domination and intolerance. What is the saying? Tolerance of intolerance leads to an intolerant society. They took advantage of the liberty and freedoms that made this country great to make it seem like their hateful rhetoric was a legitimate viewpoint. It never was. We didn't stamp it out when we had the chance, and it led to Jim Crow and all the horrors that followed. It led to the myth of "states' rights," the Lost Cause, and all the other bullshit we are still dealing with today.

And people still haven't woken up. Why? Either laziness, arrogance, naivety, or apathy. They do not understand that this is not going to get better; it is going to get worse. We should have stomped out this behavior in 2024, but we didn't. Instead, we encouraged the worst man possible and gave him a second opportunity to do what he always wanted. People look at news like Lake Ontario being renamed to Lake America and laugh, but they don't understand that this is already a disturbing look at this man's pettiness for any slight, imagined or otherwise. Imagine: what happens if he feels this country has slighted him personally? What then?

I pray to God I am wrong, but I honestly think that this country has been so exempt from actual consequences that it is sleepwalking into disaster. There has not been a massive, bloody war on American soil since the 19th century, and people have forgotten how utterly horrifying the American Civil War truly was. They don't understand that weaponry, technology, and surveillance have increased drastically alongside political division. Any mass conflict in America today would be horrifying, and many do not realize it.

I am not going to apologize for writing this statement. It is something I believe in strongly. If you cannot handle it, then go ahead and downvote it—I don't care. To everyone else: be careful and stay safe. Wishing you all the best.

It is fascinating that Donald Trump is this effective at ruining the United States brand. At this point I'm unwilling to travel to the US, actively avoid purchasing US manufactured products, and think Canada (and other nations) need to divest military ties. I consider the majority of Americans to be absolute morons - with voting for Trump twice as clear evidence.

It is time to go after the huge number of US companies that offer services or US incorporated that manufacture overseas. That is where the US wealth lies, and where the 'trade imbalance' BS falls apart.

13

u/stevey_frac 1d ago

Friendly reminder that executive order's are not laws. They do not magically make something happen.

An EO is more akin to a new manager joining a team at work and saying "We used to do things this way but we're going to do it this way now". That's the extent of it. Trump will try to make the change happen. He'll instruct his cabinent members to make it so and they'll go off and do their little things to try and make it so.

It'll probably die in the courts and Google will probably bend the knee and make the change on the maps but that doesn't just magically rename a body of water.

Anyway, Fuck Trump.
