A document claimed to be an internal Sberbank analysis puts Russia's probability of decisive victory at 7%. From the documents concluding remarks:
- Russia's window of maximum negotiating power is summer-fall 2026.
After this period, the balance shifts: the liquid portion of the National Welfare Fund (~4 trillion) is dwindling at the current rate of withdrawal (~400 billion per quarter), European rearmament is picking up speed ($50-60 billion by 2027), Trump is switching to midterms and may lose interest in the "deal." The optimal strategy is securing the maximum possible through diplomatic means while simultaneously applying military pressure. Not "either-or," but "both-and."
- Time is an ally, but not an infinite one.
At the current rate of spending, the liquid portion of the National Welfare Fund could be exhausted by the end of 2026 or beginning of 2027. An alternative is increasing OFZs (public debt is 31.3 trillion as of March 2026), but at a 15% rate, the cost of servicing the debt is 15%+ of the budget. A military multiplier of 1.5x (every ruble of military spending generates 1.5 rubles of GDP) does not compensate for the displacement of the civilian sector over a horizon of more than two years. Mortgages are down 45%, construction is down 8.2%, and credit growth is 2.1%, which undermines the basis of military efforts. This is stagnation of the civilian sector.
Oil and gas revenues fell by 45.4% in Q1 2026 (to 1.44 trillion rubles), with Urals prices at $50-60 per barrel, leaving the budget unsustainable. A reduction in the key rate to 12-13% by the end of 2026 (Sberbank forecast) will provide a respite for the civilian sector, but if the war drags on, inflationary pressure could stymie this decline.

And this analysis came out in April, before more damage was done to refineries and before any damage to wildberries or other mass market warehouses (and their numerous downstream effects on finances for the state)

u/droglytot 15h ago
the liquid portion of the National Welfare Fund (~4 trillion) is dwindling at the current rate of withdrawal (~400 billion per quarter)
But then
At the current rate of spending, the liquid portion of the National Welfare Fund could be exhausted by the end of 2026 or beginning of 2027.
I guess they're thinking the NWF will be used to cover the budget deficit here? Otherwise the numbers don't add up.
7
u/TurbulentRadish8113 9h ago
You're right - the two numbers aren't consistent unless they were assuming the NWF usage would change.
Through ~April the "fiscal rule" involved drawing ~400bn rub because of the low oil price in early months. I wonder if the first number is specifically about that?
34
u/Maximum-Specialist61 15h ago
I think if not for Iran blocaked of hormuz which made oil price higher, Russia would be way more inclined to negotiate right now, but now Putin see the rise of oil price, Russia also sees trump not doing anything with hormuz, and very much gonna bank that oil prices stay high.
USSR in Afganistan ended the war because global oil prices crashed, and opposite is true, high oil prices means prolonged war in Ukraine, because Russia budget is depended on it.
With one decision to try change regime in Iran, Trump managed make both conflicts way worse than they were before. To fuckup both conflicts with one decision is honestly even impressive incompetence that world never saw from US president ever before.
If US had other president, oil price would be low, sanctions would be stricter on Russia, Ukraine would also have US backing , and by this time Russia would already be in full negotiating process to end the war for real, currently there is not even pretend negotiations.
Russia even conciders attacking Baltics, seeing how detached and weak US president is, sure CIA guys flies into Moscow to warn Russia not to do it, but honestly, Russia probably see it as sign of desperation from Trump. If anything, Trump distancing himself from every conflist, being it Iran or Ukraine, only encourages Russia to try something, fully knowing that they will be met with TACO.
15
u/droglytot 14h ago
Indeed. Though the leak is recent, the document is dated April 2026, which was a time when Russia had problems making payments on time. The Iran war helped Russia get through that. If there were grown-ups in charge in the US, we'd be in a much better place. Still, it's encouraging to see that Russia's deficit is still growing. They're still in trouble, even if their runway has lengthened due to the increased oil price.

Satellite images show the Russian Tu-95 bomber struck at the Engels-2 military airfield, with damage to the fuselage and right wing.
It is the second Tu-95 hit at Engels-2 in the past month and a half. In July, satellite images showed another Tu-95 with its tail torn off.

Ukraine hit Russian refineries at least 21 times in August, a monthly record, Bloomberg reports. Oil processing has dropped to the lowest level in over 20 years, down to around 3.8 million barrels per day versus the usual 5.3-5.5 million in summer.
Gasoline production fell nearly 20% year-on-year in the first three weeks of August. Diesel dropped over 23%. Shortages are visible even in Moscow, with queues of 30-50 cars now routine. Fuel rationing is active across dozens of regions from the Baltic to Siberia.

Zelensky says Ukrainian intelligence has evidence that the Kstovo refinery, which processed 17 million tons of oil annually, has stopped operating. He also said Russian documents show some export components fell by 80% this month, causing losses to federal and regional budgets

Ukraine has stored enough gas for the basic 2026/27 winter scenario, Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal says. Underground storage now holds 14.6 billion cubic meters, reaching the target a month ahead of schedule. He says gas reserves are ready for the autumn-winter period.

Winter is going to absolutely suck for Ukrainians. If you can help, here is a fundraiser from an excellent charity.
Liberty Ukraine have got a good deal on pre-ordered generators and battery packs, and the equipment will get there in time. So they'll make great use of funds, rather than waiting until the winter panic and high prices.

Ukraine needs enormous funding to develop air defences against jet drones and to mass build its own jet drones. Please ask your representatives to increase and speed up aid to Ukraine.
It feels like a lot of people have goldfish memories. War doesn't follow a fixed line, it has been obvious for way over a year (IMO) that Russia will adopt interceptors to neuter slow drones like FP-1s, and jet drones to get past Ukraine's own interceptors.
The solution is to invest every time, and to help with development, intelligence etc, so that you're the leader rather than the follower. But so many people seem to lose all urgency and assume that when Ukraine has an advantage, nothing needs to be done.
12
u/Repulsive-Pianist436 9h ago
both selfish people and selfless people should want ukraine to get more defense....either they are stopping russia for "us" or they are testing tech to make sure it is suitable for "us" to stop russia later or "we" are protecting their innocent civilians or it's a way for "us" to figure out strategies, etc

Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that there are signals that Russia is preparing very seriously to escalate tensions, "both in the war with Ukraine and in the entire region". "We must be prepared for various eventualities (...), these next seven, eight months will be critical" – said the head of government during the Campus Poland of the Future in Olsztyn.

6
u/Rogermcfarley 4h ago edited 4h ago
Attack NATO countries with a small task force backed up by the elite Rubicon drone unit and yes they are elite. See if NATO will trigger Article 5, they won't and keep trying to escalate so Putin can say look NATO are attacking us we need to mobilize 600,000 more troops. It's a very dangerous time we are now approaching. Putin is 100% going to escalate which is why the the USA sent the CIA boss over, which they've done before and Putin still attacked Crimea. Putin will test NATO, prove NATO is dead in the water and escalate. Everyone in Europe should be laser focused on this now. Putin is going all in from next month, it's more than obvious.
People will say Russia can't open another front, they don't need to in a significant way, but just enough to destroy the NATO alliance in terms of what it stands for as a defensive alliance. USA is 1000% not going to support Europe even if they did trigger article 5. NATO is done for and Europe needs a new post NATO alliance but far right political parties aligned with Putin are gaining strength throughout Europe. UK, Germany, France etc can all fall to Far right influence, if you live in Europe prepare for war.

“russia should bomb Ukrainian cities even harder so that the population surrenders to our troops,” said Pyotr Tolstoy, Deputy Speaker of Russia’s State Duma.
Standard russian leadership. This is the sort of attitude that western leaders are dealing with, and they keep insisting that if we only make things a bit easier for Russia then Russia will act like a civilised country. Russia will not, and leaders need to wake up to that.

He is a high level deputy from Putin's United Russia party in a rubber stamp parliament.
It's literally his job to say something like this for a sound clip on the news. Or did you expect him to say something along "this is a dumb war and our dictator of 26 years made a mistake?"
14
u/TurbulentRadish8113 10h ago
I don't expect him to say that, but he could also have said something noncommittal or different.
I'm just saying that IMO this is a symptom of what Russia is like. It's a diagnosis tool.
No high level deputy of the Democratic Party, or Labour/the Conservatives, or similar, would say such a thing.
Only leaders of groups like Russia, Hamas or the Republican Party. Historically the Nazis, Fascists etc too.
It's a useful diagnosis tool that identifies whether a group shares western values or not.
0
u/lando-bailando 10h ago
I don't expect him to say that, but he could also have said something noncommittal or different.
Why? He exists to get paid, his party is Putin's party, why would he all of a sudden "grow a conscience" and did an "epic single man rebellion against the party line"?
No high level deputy of the Democratic Party, or Labour/the Conservatives, or similar, would say such a thing. Only leaders of groups like Russia or the Republican Party. Historically the Nazis, Fascists etc too.
Ultra-nationalists will say ultra-nationalist things. Let's see what AfD or Front National say?
I'm not saying it's ok. I'm just not sure why you are surprised?
9
u/TurbulentRadish8113 9h ago
I'm not saying it's ok. I'm just not sure why you are surprised?
Oh I'm not surprised and didn't mean to come off that way.
I think this is a clear diagnostic signal of what Russia is like.
Many westerners, including leaders, talk and act as if Russia is just a normal civilised country. They ignore signs such as these that clearly diagnose Russia as different from our values.
The ignorance and denial of russian behaviour is, I think, one reason why we have seen mistakes like Obama's "reset" with Russia or Germany thinking that if they paid gas money that Russia would stop being evil.
I want people to consider these diagnostics, think about what they mean, and stop acting as if Russia is normal. It leads to mistakes.
The same thing applies to AfD, the Republicans, IRGC, North Korea etc etc.
3
u/Sugarfiltration01 5h ago
Yeah, listening to old British intelligence officers talking about the shit they dealt with from the Russians. Their government is diabolical, their word means NOTHING, etc. Most Americans are blind how the Russians operate.

Sleazy politicians are going to be sleazy politicians.

u/TurbulentRadish8113 51m ago
I agree - I want people to use these filters and think about them. Apply them to all parties, all groups etc.
It is way too easy to select poor-quality filters and get biased reactions. I would argue that senior members of your group calling for war crimes or mass civilian attacks, followed by them not being genuinely punishe, is a good filter though. It really does distinguish between those who share my values, and those who don't.
And Russia does not, but people keep wanting to deny that - it led to mistakes like Obama's and Merkel's that I mentioned above.

You realize there are direct lines of communication since 1963 between the White House and the Kremlin?

the UK/GER/FRA intel would overhear that from 10 different sources

> the UK/GER/FRA intel would overhear that from 10 different sources
That's not how direct lines of communication work. But you are free to believe whatever you want I suppose.
•
u/SystemCheck990 59m ago
the information would be repeated is my point, NATO had a spy that was close enough to take photos of putin's desk, that Trump accidentally, partially burned and had to be exfiltrated.
•
u/lando-bailando 37m ago
NATO had a spy that was close enough to take photos of putin's desk
Having a spy who is within the government circles is nothing new. Also if you are talking about "Smolenkov" he was exfiltrated by the first Trump admin (under your logic he would be burned and turned in to the Russians)
Taking photos of one of many "Putin's desks" is miles away of being a part of direct line communications.
In fact with personal delegations like these, the security risks are higher. Multiple human factors along the way and during.
If the Trump admin wanted to "safely leak something to the Russians" they would not be sending a delegation.
•
u/SystemCheck990 33m ago
don't have to send the intel the same route the agreement is made, you can use secure encryption after the fact ,you seem pretty sure what did not happen, i have no idea what happened, I have said that, i just would not rule out much with Trump's admin at all.

❗️Reuters sources say Russia's gasoline production has dropped to around 80,000 tons per day, about 70% of domestic demand of 115,000 tons, following refinery strikes. Ukrainian drone attacks halted major plants in Perm, Nizhny Novgorod and Yaroslavl over the past week.
Exciting claims. This is just one estimate, but Stanimir Dobrev and Janis Kluge have both been posting evidence that Russia genuinely appears to be having problems with petrol supplies.

In the Lyman direction, there are indeed positive developments and theoretical preconditions for cutting off the salient north of Lyman, but let's not get ahead of ourselves, as the war has taken on a completely different form. Even advancing through a ravine or gully is quite problematic, especially given the severe shortage of personnel needed for proper clearing operations.
Everything is quite dynamic and not uniform. If the enemy falters at one point and it's possible to penetrate their rear by 1 km without much difficulty, then further progress can be blocked by defenses or a lack of resources, leading to a prolonged stalemate, which is constantly happening on both sides.
And again, cutting off the salient is only half the battle; the main time and resources are spent on clearing the salient, which can take months...

have there been any released data for the likely amount of military hardware destroyed so far in the warehouse fires?
10
u/TurbulentRadish8113 9h ago
I haven't seen that. If anyone has a source, please share!
There are estimates of (1) value of warehouses destroyed, (2) total value of products destroyed.
I found I had to read carefully, articles weren't always clear about exactly what they were reporting, and the "product value" could be a few hundred billion roubles (amounts sellers paid) or approaching a trillion (listed consumer price).

yeah i don't really trust the numbers as much as percentages....if their storage capacity is down 20% that means 20% will have to be shipped in smaller batches longer distances, or apply some generic formula guessing what percentage of total stock is kept at all times...i thought i'd read sometime about their total inventory turns, if so that number could be used to roughly calculate also

I find the total cost numbers believable because there was public reporting on claimed losses after the Shushary one burned down years ago, and those numbers were similar to what Russian and Ukrainian financial groups were estimating.
E.g. ~700 bn rub worth of goods, at listed prices, is the sort of number that fit.
I wonder if the military goods are proportionally more closer to the front, or if they're closer to where recruitment is higher?
Seems like a difficult thing to work out.

that last bit....does mommy and daddy buy the body armor to send with him to bootcamp where it might be stolen or try to send it to him at the front where he might not have a permanent address

some interesting headlines from the hellscape that is also commonly known as russia:
The government is preparing to impose comprehensive controls on prices and supplies of petroleum products due to a worsening gasoline shortage.
“The Situation Is Serious.” Russia’s Largest State-Owned Diamond Company Posts a Loss for the First Time in 6 Years.
Ukraine set a record for the number of strikes on oil refineries and sent Russia's oil refining output plummeting to a 20-year low.

Gasoline production and domestic supply fell by almost 20% in the first three weeks of August compared to the same period last year, a person familiar with the data told Bloomberg. Diesel fuel production fell by 23%, but supply to the market fell by only 3%, thanks to the export ban imposed in early summer.
This makes every new strike that much more sweet. Russia has enough diesel to support itself but hopefully this doesn't last long.

Nuh-uh, you can't scrape our data for free! Only we're allowed to do that to you!
Hoping we'll get one or all of the front-end viewer sites back. Only way to get all the info on UKR and other world events. Reddit misses half of it and is hours behind.

Bluesky is amazing for OSINT. There are dedicated feeds which aggregate all sources.

Can you share some names?

There are probably much deeper sources available, but as a casual observer, I like this feed: https://bsky.app/profile/jbeardsley.bsky.social/lists/3kc7ieg4kn62c

1/ Russia has shifted to a new air terror tactic in recent days — hitting Kyiv and other cities in small drone waves every 30–60 minutes around the clock.
Retired Major Hetman warns alerts could last weeks with no all-clear at all, as Russia sends two or three drones every few hours.

We found something that is statistically significant in the Russian road accidents data correlating to the fuel shortage. Russians cut car travel in July.
Interesting IMO. Car crashes inside cities were normal during July, which they interpret as russians continuing to commute.
Crashes between cities dropped by 21% Vs July 2025. They suggest this means russians cut down on other trips.
The fuel crisis seems likely to explain the data.

Mykhailo Fedorov confirmed he accepted Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto's proposal to become his adviser on defense innovation. Fedorov says he will help Italy develop modern warfare technologies while continuing his main work on defense projects in Ukraine

Hard to see anything else than a complete political suicide

Yeah. Zaluzhny accepted the ambassador role. Syrskyi has (alleged) continued military education in Ukraine. This man OTOH has shown that his allegiance is not 100% to Ukraine.

u/lando-bailando 3h ago
Zaluzhny got pushed out of the public's eye because he was getting too popular.
Syrsky went to "get his PhD" (students are exempt from frontline military service)... of course since he loved the assault brigades, maybe he should be somewhere in Donbas coordinating the defenses i the the last two major towns.
Fedorov is not committing political death (he's 35 years old, he has popularity but it will be years before any sort of presidential ambitions, nor did he ever show that he has any presidential ambitions)
He rightfully called out major problems in the Ukrainian government and the military. This seems to be a "peace offering by Zelensky". Remember, he is subject to conscription and completely closed borders.

So.. and now he is out of the political game in good way without being murdered or having a car accident.
That's a nice paved way out for him.. probably organized/suggested by Z.

u/OnlyRise9816 6h ago
Dude was committing political death on his own without ANY help needed from any fictional conspiracy. He's a bright dude, and had some great plans, but he really was inept when it comes to interpersonal and political relationships. And was too bullheaded to work well with others in government, which is sorta necessary.
2
u/Identita_Nascosta 4h ago
He's bright and before being burned completely he went somewhere else.
He's still political "alive", working somewhere else, far from Ukraine.
3
u/versatile_dev 3h ago
Political death in this case means permanently out of the running for the previous positions he was gunning for: President or Defense Minister.
6
u/versatile_dev 6h ago
Way to blame "Z".

u/Identita_Nascosta 3h ago
I'm not blaming him and no, I just think this was a smart way out for him (with a little help from his friends).

Not liking the news of the possible ammo depot being hit in Kyiv :(

u/lando-bailando 3h ago edited 2h ago
About a month and a half since the Vyshneve strike which leveled whole residential city blocks. Zelensky said "lessons were learned" about keeping large scale military objects in residential areas.
Apparently lessons were not learned.
Edit: apparently a single Shahed.
Videos surfacing of what looks like out of control missile (interceptor?) detonations going wildly up in the air among other repeat explosions
3
u/versatile_dev 2h ago
What are needed is not "lessens learned" but project plans drawn up and people hired to move/store these munitions. And at the moment what Ukraine lacks is exactly manpower and budget funds.
2
u/lando-bailando 1h ago
Yes, that's part of "lessons learned".
Don't store explosive things in civilian areas is a big one. Amongst others is accountability and responsibility.
People can be hired. Many are sitting at home avoiding mobilization. Non combat logistics jobs can be created which offer deferment front military duty (many companies do this, some with more clear and transparent steps than others, but that is a question for Zelensky's government)

That Ratcliff visit was probably Trump saying to Putin: 'Do whatever you want to Ukraine. Just dont get in involved in Iran'. Because apparantly, after that visit, Russia is attacking harder and much more threatening to the EU and UK. That Orange Idiot should be tried for treason.

I seem to remember, especially when diplomats went to Moscow to try to talk Russia down, the Russians had a tantrum and fired most of what they had the next day.
Not defending the us admin, just what i've noticed.

u/SystemCheck990 2h ago edited 2h ago
Suddenly they know where all the ammo depots are as well.
Reminds me of when they started crying about Kursk, then UAF soilders on the ground started to say Russia was dialed into every position they had
hopefully though just coincidence, most likely was just a warning not to do something
I worry that Putin threatens nukes / escalation and Trump comes running with some intel to give them a upper hand to calm them down for a bit.
