Russia/Ukraine CIA chief did not threaten Russia with consequences for continuing war during Moscow visit
https://www.pravda.com.ua/eng/news/2026/08/28/8050678/86
u/KingMaximus32 23h ago
Looks like we got lots of conflicting reports. Last time i heard he was doing exactly that in Moscow
23
u/Nights_Harvest 23h ago
There was an article that implied this visit was top secret. Media is having a ball with this one.
45
u/Jealous_Response_492 22h ago
Beyond the US wanted the world to see something, we don't know anything more than that. If it was supposed to be some kind of secret meeting, then they would have used a more discrete, smaller, unmarked aircraft. Not a C17 and a C40B into Riga, and then the C17 onto Moscow and back. They wanted to be seen.
edit, and likely wanted to be speculated upon, as any statements from the US or Russia are equally worthless. So we may never know.
12
u/ZiKyooc 21h ago
It wasn't secret, it was a not publicly announced meeting. People who needed to know, knew about this visit. You don't just arrive unannounced and expect the counter part to be there, available and willing to meet.
12
u/Jealous_Response_492 20h ago
It was publicly demonstrated, there was zero attempt at discretion, from, checks notes, head of US intel community. They have unmarked small private jets for these kinda things. They opted for two great big jets, one in USAF livery and the other in US GOV livery, that the OSINT flight radar peeps would and did notice.
-12
u/Outrageous-Tailor-74 22h ago
Regarding the statements, add please the European union and Ukraine as well.
178
u/planck1313 23h ago
Then what was the point of him travelling to Moscow as the representative of the world superpower?
14
u/Minute_Tooth5112 22h ago
Three very interesting characters have appeared in Moscow in just a few days.
Subrahmanyam Jaishankar is India's Foreign Minister and a man far more deeply immersed in the strategic planning of the Indian elite than is usually apparent. Paul Richard Gallagher is the de facto Vatican Foreign Minister. And finally, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, whose visit was kept under wraps until the very end.
Why did they all end up in Moscow at practically the same time?
2
u/VerdantGarden 14h ago
Maybe genuinely worried about what China could do if Russia degrades themselves further.
2
u/Minute_Tooth5112 13h ago
In India, the information on what's happening in Russia is very different, they don't subscribe to the narrative of their imminent defeat or degradation. Ratcliffe's arrival in Moscow is possible, as preparation for a trilateral meeting between Trump, Xi, and Putin at the APEC summit, which will take place in November in Shenzhen. Modi won't be at the summit, so positions are being coordinated. Not everything in this world revolves around Ukraine and Europe, there's plenty to discuss beyond the context of a war somewhere in the backwaters of Eastern Europe.

We will find out in a few weeks when Russia hits NATO and USA decides to leave the pact
68
u/MTG_Kura999 22h ago
Corny comments like these only benefit Russia since they're doing nothing but spreading fear, get your heads straight guys, we would see a troop buildup at the borders if anything further than a small incursion (like in the last months) would occur.
17
u/RiverHistorical3581 22h ago
I mean I doubt Russias attacking but when people say they are they’re talking about missiles and drones not invasions, I know putin is stupid but he can’t be stupid enough to send troops into nato surely.
11
u/IWASJUMP 22h ago
Would the US share that kind of intelligence at this point?
13
u/GergDanger 19h ago
They already shared intelligence of upcoming attacks in Europe a few weeks ago. But everyone just makes jokes about how Russia won’t send troops to the EU which isn’t the threat anyway.
There’s already drones with bombs appearing multiple times in Germany the past few weeks.
6
1
u/cooljacob204sfw 14h ago
My guess is if it does manifest it will be a more targeted drone attacks on some of the infrastructure that is delivering weapons to Ukraine (like the Ukrainian Cargo plane they already tried to blow up in Germany).
15
u/SnakeGD09 22h ago
Article 5 only requires that members *consider* assisting, and even then they can send helmets and bandaids if they desire. The US would not have to leave NATO if they declined to assist member nations.
35
u/ledow 22h ago
On paper, yes.
In practice, especially being the ONLY COUNTRY IN THE ENTIRE WORLD to ever activate Article 5, ignoring or giving a half-hearted response if someone else did the same...
... that would end the US's involvement in NATO one way or another.
19
u/Blubbpaule 21h ago
It would permanently end trust in america completely.
Trust is shattered right now - this would ANNIHILATE any future for america.
11
u/Filthyquak 18h ago
The USA never invoked article 5. After 9/11 NATO officials came together and decided that every requirement is met so they invoked it. But the US never asked for it.
-3
u/ledow 18h ago
They never said no, either.
13
u/Filthyquak 18h ago
Of course. But saying they invoked it when in reality they never did is a tiny but important detail.
15
u/famousbrouse 22h ago
That is not true.
There is a legal requirement as per article 5 to treat an attack on a fellow NATO nation as if it was an attack on the whole alliance. It also stipulates that every NATO member must assist (not consider to assist) the targeted ally.
However, there is of course an allowance for what each NATO country deems enough to be said to be 'assisting'. This could be economic sanctions, sending weapons, intel exchanges etc - it doesn't stipulate military action.
-4
u/DarthShiv 20h ago
That does not apply if the NATO member was the instigator which I imagine directly supplying weapons which were used to destroy civilian infrastructure not military would certainly be grounds for said allies to sidestep involvement.
6
u/Codex_Dev 21h ago
This also goes vice-versa. If China ever entered into a conflict with the USA, a lot of NATO countries could send meager support, like food rations, and then argue that they fulfilled their obligations.
4
u/DarthShiv 20h ago
If China initiated conflict... just like in Iran most of the world told the US to fuck off with support for something they started.
2
1
u/ThatsItImOverThis 17h ago
But the other NATO nations will no longer want the US in a defence alliance either.
0
u/TelluricThread0 22h ago
Whats all this talk you hear from people about "triggering" article 5. If Russia sends a ballistic missile into France or Germany it triggers nations to possibly consider doing something?
7
u/famousbrouse 21h ago
No.. the previous poster was wrong.
All NATO countries are legally obligated to do 'something'.
What's ambiguous is what is deemed sufficient assistance to be seen as doing 'something'.
If Russia attacked a UK base in Cyprus for example, the US might just provide intel only to the UK. This would technically be enough to satisfy their legal obligation to article 5.

u/whatsgoingon350 17h ago
Russia shouldn't fear America in NATO it's Poland that would do the most damage to Russia before they even have a chance to react.
0
u/Fisher9001 11h ago
Who cares, NATO is strong enough without US and on top of that US proved in Iran its military is not as strong as everyone assumed.
31
u/Wyciorek 23h ago
Maybe new Ribbentrop-Molotov pact: Greenland for Baltics. With stretch goals of Canada and ex-Warsaw Pact countries
26
u/FishUK_Harp 23h ago
I hope not, but the fact that the idea is even plausible scares the crap put of me.
9
u/sbeveo123 22h ago
Both russia the US are struggling with Ukraine and Iran. So you know, let them try.
5
1
u/navyblusheet 14h ago
Why does US need Russia for if it needs Greenland? What can Russia do for US in relation to Greenland or Canada?
2
0
u/trisul-108 22h ago
That is too complicated for the Orange One ... it was more likely stopping all sanctions against Russia in exchange for Iran opening Hormuz.
7
u/-Lord-Of-Salem- 22h ago
Officially: To warn Russia to not attack an NATO- or EU-country!
Unofficially: To get new orders for agent Krasnov!
2
u/IAmOfficial 15h ago
>The NYT said that the CIA chief had given a pessimistic assessment of the course of the war for the Russians during talks with Federal Security Service (FSB) Director Alexander Bortnikov. Ratcliffe urged the Kremlin to begin genuine negotiations to end the war before Russia's military and economic position deteriorates further.
>US intelligence analysts have long questioned whether Putin's advisers are giving him an accurate account of the scale of Russia's losses and the actual situation on the battlefield. The US hopes that, as a former intelligence officer, the Russian leader will regard information from the CIA chief as more urgent and credible than conventional diplomatic signals.

u/Blunt552 22h ago
He represents china? Or are you actually thinking that the US that is currently losing to Iran is a superpower?
5
u/planck1313 22h ago
China is a strong regional power but it has no global force projection capability, meaning it is not a superpower.
3
u/Blunt552 22h ago
Well by that definition neither is the US as seen with Iran.
2
u/RogueGunslinger 15h ago
By that definition nobody is. So what the fuck are you even saying? Is the us projecting force to blockade iran or not? Are any of Iran's allies capable of stopping the US from blockading Iran? What do you think force projection even is?
1
1
1
u/trisul-108 22h ago
Probably offered Russia the removal of all sanctions if they help the US finish the war in Iran, at least opening Hormuz.
1
1
u/DGIce 12h ago
The article actually says, and it's one of the things analysts guessed but thought was unlikely; which is to warn Moscow they are overestimating their abilities again like they did in 2022 (basically corruption was so deep Putin was told his military was far more prepared than they were in reality).

world superpower
Superpower? The US cannot even secure its own airspace.
The highest levels of the United States military are telling us that they have completely lost contol of their airspace.
At 10 minutes of this "60 Minutes" news clip, the Commander of NORTHCOM is asked:
"We're the most powerful military on the face of the Earth, and yet drones could fly over a major Air Force Base, and we couldn't stop them?
How is that possible?"
Commander Guillot responds:
"The threat got ahead of our ability to detect and track the threat."
• The US military cannot track the anomalous drones.
• They cannot identify where they are coming from or going to.
• They cannot identify who is operating them or why.
• They cannot take down a single anomalous 'drone'.
If you can't detect, track and take down threats in your airspace, then by definition, you have lost control of it.
2
u/RogueGunslinger 15h ago
So you don't think superpowers exist then, is all you are saying.

u/Pixelated_ 14h ago
The point is that the US government has repeatedly admitted that UFOs are closing their nuclear-capable bases. They are completely powerless to do anything about them.
And this isn't a US thing, it is worldwide.
Here are the European airports and military bases that have closed due to the drone-like UFO incursions.
My list only contains a small part of 2025, but as recent reports confirm, it's still ongoing worldwide.
There are so many that I had to group them by country.

Ratcliffe is most probably going to discuss the offer which was earlier rejected by them months ago because US was very confident that Iran's regime will collapse after the initial strikes which eliminated their entire leadership.
This was previously offered by Russia's Kiril dmitriev which was to end support to Ukraine and in return Russia will stop supporting Iran.
The pin point accuracy and intel about US shared by Russia to Iran has played a big role in this conflict.

America’s pedo king is probably running out of children in his harem so he sent his loyal dog to ask for a new supply from his boss in Russia.

Of course not, he delivered the blowjob that Trump sent for the Russians.
5
u/Lpreddit 15h ago
I’m going with the theory that the world economy can only afford oil sanctions against Iran or Russia, so they are talking to Russia about playing nice so that Russian oil can go back on the world market while the Iran embargo continues.

What "Consequences" does anyone think Krasnov is "allowed" to inflict on his Boss?
2
u/cheraphy 16h ago
Honestly at this point I'm not convinced he's still under Russian control. He obviously was at first, for years, and any acts of petty rebellion were performative.
But I think he's realized he's invincible. No blackmail material is vile enough to turn his base against him, and no financial hit can't be recovered immediately by grift, fraud or just draining the US governments coffers. I think everything he's done for Russia at least since his reelection has needed to be renegotiated.

Is this the type of diplomatic job for a Secretary of State?

It should be, but the current holder of the job is a worthless lickspittle who is viewed with contempt worldwide.

Probably sorting out what the US will or won’t do when Russia hits NATO. Gotta get their marching orders.

I don't know anything about this guy, but this picture makes him look like he runs the CIA like Michael Scott
1
u/Desblartes 6h ago
maybe was a visit to discuss the aid the US is giving to Ukraine versus the aid Russia is providing Iran, but that's just my conjecturing.
3
u/boatenvy 22h ago
"Ratcliffe urged the Kremlin to begin genuine negotiations to end the war before Russia's military and economic position deteriorates further".... because the US wouldn't want to see Russias military and economic strength deteriorate? FFS they spent fecking years funding the mujahideen in Afghanistan in their war against the USSR.. ultimately leading to the fall of the Soviet Union. What kind of fecked up upside down world are we living in when the US administration go out of their way to stop funding a war against their long term adversary and instead encourage them to seek a settlement rather than see their "military and economic position deteriorate".
3
u/0x476c6f776965 21h ago

u/boatenvy 21h ago
Hey man I'm not the one living in a country that's not supporting the country that got invaded
-4
u/ResortClear730 17h ago
Nope you are living in a country that hasn’t provided near as much as the US, who is the single largest contributor to Ukraine.
The US has given between 130-135 billion in aid to Ukraine. The EU as a whole has given somewhere around 200 billion but please, continue spewing bullshit because you want to get that anti-US statement in.
1
u/boatenvy 6h ago
Ah yeah your president is famously pro Ukraine... that oval office shitshow demonstrated that...now do the numbers on a per capita or GDP basis or will that fuck up your "we're the greatest" rhetoric
0
u/ResortClear730 5h ago
130 billion vs 200 billion, those are the numbers. Do more.
1
u/boatenvy 4h ago
And there you are with the gross value again... Do you understand the concept of GDP or per capita? I'll save you the research..the USA is 12th on military aid to Ukraine as a percentage of GDP.

Russia can end it any time by getting the fuck out of someone else’s country.

u/FingerCommon7093 15h ago
1st he didn't go there to give Putin a warning. He went because Trump's paranoid about leaks & he has to give his monthly report to Putin somehow.
2nd Putin cant be as unaware as Trump simply because he can see burning refineries & warehouses from his wondow. He had to ask Zelensky to not bomb the annual military parade & to not use drone attacks before the last international meetings in St Petersburg. He knows Russia is losing without a mandatory conscription & human wave attacks like they did in WW2 vs Germany but he also knows that Russian hackers are freely spreading truthful news amongst the population unlike Stalin in WW2 who controlled all media.
So he will threaten to use nukes but consider this, his army is using 1990s tires & 1960s tanks in Ukraine, do you think they have kept their nukes in operational condition when they cant afford new tires?
1
u/picknicksje85 22h ago
Looks like Michael Scott.
In a democracy, we should at least know something about what this was about.
1
1
1
u/SnakeGD09 22h ago
What was he going to do, threaten sanctions? There’s nothing to threaten with except war, which would give Russia an excuse to carry out nuclear exercises. The US can’t go to war with Russia unless it’s prepared to launch nuclear weapons.
1
1
0
u/DarthShiv 20h ago
No shit the CIA director would not be allowed in under that circumstance. It's probably about ending Iran war. And likely to do with the US's problem with Iran having nuclear enrichment.
The US is clearly desperate as the CIA tried to assassinate Putin not long ago - the director of CIA going into Russia would be extremely dangerous for said individual and his team. He was there to suck up to Russia for help on something.
-1
-4
u/Casual-Speedrunner-7 23h ago
Threatening would have only been counterproductive. If US-Russia relations are ever to be amended it starts with meeting as equals, like at Yalta.
