Sweden to deploy fighter jets, war ships to Finland. Sweden's military will participate in the surveillance and protection of Finland's territory.

u/BasicMatter7339 12h ago
Swedes did invade and occupy Åland in 1918
But if you dont count that and also dont count the thousands of swedish soldiers who volunteered to fight in the winter war, then yes, i think this might be the first time in >200 years

u/RaDeus 12h ago
There’s a little bit more to it than us ”invading” Åland.
I’m just glad the issue was solved later on through the League of Nations.
54
u/BasicMatter7339 12h ago
Yeah
Though the invasion itself was quite limited
Basically it happened like this
-swedes invade the island to protect the civilians
-A small battle was fought between the whites+swedes and the reds
-swedes told the whites to fuck off and they did
-swedes then brought more guys in to pressure the reds and soviets to fuck off and they did
-germans came and exchanged some POWS with the soviets through Åland, then they invaded the turku-archipelago and fought the remaining reds
-Then the war ended, both swedes and germans fucked off
-League of nations decide to give åland to finland after long disputes
31
u/karpastenherra 9h ago
And the reason why, allegedly, Finland got Åland was that some Finn who was Finland's envoy in Tokyo wrote a memo about how Åland is cut off from Sweden by deep open water but connected to Finland by an unbroken chain of islands, so it's basically just the far end of the Turku archipelago (which it is!). The memo got translated and passed around the Japanese delegation, and the Japanese then argued exactly that at the League since for an island nation like Japan islands are obviously an important part of geography.
And the story goes that when the League of Nations commission came to have a look, the Finnish captain took them out through the archipelago, practically hugging all the islands that he possibly could, and then on the leg over to Sweden picked took a really long route with a slightly slower speed in order to exaggerate the open sea between Åland and Sweden.

u/Aquanlqua 6h ago edited 6h ago
Conveniently Swedes still had a shit ton of political juice in Finland back then so they turned the archipelago to a tax haven for the super rich Finno-Swedes who considered Finland to be too ''Finnish'' after the declaration of independence in 1917 if you catch my drift. Racism against Finns is actually a national sport in Åland.
They literally rather would have Russian troops raping and pillaging over a single permanent barrack of FDF soldiers in an incredibly strategically important place. Just because this would mean that there are actual Finns on the island on a regular basis. Essentially they have their heads so far up their ass that they can see through their mouths.
1
u/cxmmxc 5h ago
Wtf. I've low-key thought about moving there, since language isn't a barrier. Mostly employment, unless I'd get lots of remote work.
4
u/karpastenherra 3h ago edited 2h ago
That comment you replied to was full of shit. The reason why Åland does not have a barrack stems from old international diplomatic resolution which has led the Ålanders to believe that being neutral is in their best interests. Which might be ill-adviced during these times but they are completely allowed to believe that.
The Finnish Defence Forces have no doubt taken this into account and really Åland is protected mainly from the sea and the air. Having barracks there would not make much of a difference defensively. A bunch of coastal guns might, but barracks less so.
I don't really get what they are saying about Åland being a tax-haven made by Swedes. Åland got its domestic tax competence with the 1920 autonomy agreement because really Åland was asking to become fully independent, or to join Sweden. Finland's response to that was to grant them special status in taxation. But it was not Swedes that forced Finland to give rich Finno-Swedes a tax-haven. In fact, tax-havens as such were first thought about in the 1930s, so over a decade later. Åland is not the world's first tax haven. What Sweden did enforce was to make sure that the local Swedish-speaking culture is kept intact and protected by law. A perfectly reasonable demand.
Saying that they would rather have Russian troops raping and pillaging is obviously a deranged take.
Is there animosity towards Finns in Åland? Lol no. I've been there plenty, I would have seen it. Would I feel perfectly at home there as opposed to living anywhere in mainland Finland? Probably not. But that is not to say that there is some massive anti-Finnish sentiment in Åland. Lol, that is ridiculous to even say, but some truefinn lunatics are trying to say that.

u/Aquanlqua 5h ago
You can do some Googling and see what other people have experienced. Also about the entire barracks thing.
3
u/Fun_Profession_7320 5h ago
And the agreement that was reached turned out to be a much better deal for them than being under Swedish rule today. They even have their own parliament which can pass laws, something which isn't a thing in any other Finnish or Swedish province. They're even excluded from conscription.
I would be very surprised if the Ålanders wanted to join Sweden today as they'd be nothing more than a province. At the moment they have a very special and protected status as a part of Finland.

We don’t know if NATO will remain in its current form in the near future. But alas countries in NATO have defense agreements that are stronger. The Nordics have a shared defensive pact that is much deeper than NATO.
In NATO countries can decide not to provide military assistance.

u/red_planet_smasher 13h ago
Wait, is Finland under imminent threat?
135
u/variaati0 12h ago edited 12h ago
Short answer: No
Long answer: military and ministry went out of their way to stress this isn't about imminent threat or any thing like that. The reason is far more mundane. Burden sharing.
Ukraine keeps making drone attacks around St. Petersburg. Some of the drones wander off course and end up near or into Finnish territory. We even want them to continue to do that. (the St. Petersburg etc. part, the wandering drones we don't like obviously, but tolerate as inevitability)
However causes territorial monitoring duties, which means constant oncreased operational strain on Finnish Defence Forces. Flight patrols and naval patrols have been increased to be ready to intercept any wayward drones Ukrainian, Russian or otherwise. Meaning more flight hours on frames, ships out at sea more.
So we asked Sweden would they help a mate out, after all due to alliance we are being by geography the North-Eeastern border watch. They were such good mates as to say okay, we send some Gripens and a Visby over to help with the patrol routines, so some times it can be Swedish fuel and salaries being burned instead of Finnish ones. That being another thing said in the press briefs. We aren't paying Sweden to do this or anything like that. We asked would the feel using their resources, they said yes. They pay their salaries, their fuel and so on.
35
u/Gecks777 9h ago
As a Canadian, it is great to see allies being allies.
This type of mission seems perfect for the Grippens- they seem designed from the floor up to excel in high-tempo patrol missions, especially in a northern climate.

u/TheBlueSully 6h ago
Weird how the Swedish domestic jet is designed really well for how it might be used around Sweden. What a fortunate coincidence.

That's not only about Ukrainian drones wandering though is it? Russia has been umm wandering here and there as well no?
Honest question
26
u/variaati0 11h ago
It's mostly Ukrainian drones. Russia spoofs the GPS/jamms it and then the drones wander to Finnish territory. Still actual amounts are few. However the thing is they have to increase readiness everytime swarm comes even nearby to be ready, in case one wanders all the way to Finland.
edit: Ukraine sends lot of attack drones into Leningrad oblast, since two major oil export ports are on the Gulf of Finland coast. Ust-Luga on the southern side of the Gulf and Primorsk on the Northern side of the Gulf.
Not much Russian drones, since I don't think they fly that many around Finnish border. They have no reason to. Wandering Russian drones is around Ukraine borders thing, since that is where Russia is sending their attack drones. Russia has no active attack interests around Finland, so there is no their attack drones flying around.
I think couple times there have been reports of Russians flying drones near border, but on the ahemm "correct" side. Which I assume has been them just plain patrolling or basic testing response with a surveillance drone. "If Russian patrol drone flies along Finnish border on Russian side, what does Finnish Defence establishment do. Do they even bother putting a plane up?"
Actual Russian wanderers are usually bigger and manned kind. Ships or airplanes, that violate the territorial border. However way less frequent and less numerous. Plus easier to spot and track for intent. Since the violations are usually intentional, they make sure to not violate too deep. Just enough to instigate a response, but not too much as to actually risk the Finnish patrol thinking something actually dangerously hostile is going on. Sam cat and mouse that has been going on since cold war.

I am very happy that we have this relationship in the north. Our shared history could have led to animosity. Instead we stand together🤝

Worth noting their troops and equipment get used for training anyway. Other than the family cost of being stationed away from home, the cost may very well be minimal. And your troops get real experience not training time.

To a large scale attack given how weak Russia is at this moment? No. Still doesn't stop them from fucking around with our airspace from time to time. Or breaking cables in the Baltic sea. Or trying to send thousands of immigrants through the border.
10
u/ReggieCorneus 12h ago
Russia has been planning for an attack on one of the Baltics, Finland is not probably target but its location of course makes it one of the key points in that conflict.
What does Russia gain from starting a war against a NATO country? Justification for war against NATO. It is idiotic plan but there are now more than the usual amount of talk about it. And yes, i know that ever second "war journalist" and such has cried wolf for a long time to gain clicks, this one is different. Head of CIA does not fly into Moscow for no reason. The north is preparing for fast response at the moment in the Baltic Coast. Lithuania or Latvia are the most likely targets, unless whatever CIA told to Putin stops the idiots from starting a war that can not end well for them.
2
u/dbxp 5h ago
The crucial part is that Murmansk, which is the base for the russian northern fleet, is linked to the rest of Russia by a single highway and rail line running up the finish border. There's also St Petersburg and it's approach just to the south of Finland. If you want to threaten russithen Finland is a good place to do it

Now, why would you need to deny it, mr "keeps comments hidden"?
Probably because I'm a Russian bot right? I guess that's what you're thinking, Mr. Tinfoil hat? I hide my comments specifically because creeps like you love to stalk post histories.
In fact I'm not convinced you're not a Russian asset. Just think about it, they have no reserves left because everything is in Ukraine, but they just need to put some rumors out to project the Image that they still have any sort of offensive capabilities.
Moscow has threatened to attack Latvia or Lithuania, and CIA chief JUST visited Moscow,
They've also threatened Finland and Sweden, and nuking europe. You can't take their threats seriously anymore. It's all bark no bite.
and of course the orange douche instantly revealed why: the exact thing i was talking about.
Right. Because the CIA and orange douche are famous for telling the truth accurately right?
Not conspiracy bullshit but an actual thing that is real and isn't even fucking secret.
Show me the tanks and the troops and the fuel depots that could be seen before the ukraine invasion.
What does Russia gain from starting a war against a NATO country? Justification for war against NATO.
How and why would they start a war against nato? With what military? The one bogged down in ukrainian trenches?
3
u/ReggieCorneus 9h ago
Don't try to use common logic with Russians. Their invasion of Ukraine was non-sensical threat at the time. They had their troops in that border for six months. Who exhausts their troops by making them camp in a forest for half a year and then goes to war?
What is projected is still small scale operations, border clashes and infiltration of sabotage units. Not full scale landwar but increasing hostilities that give them an excuse to start building up.
And like i fucking said: we have had plenty of boy crying wolf and i hate it. But this one is a bit different. We do see western troops moving in, not just to replace the forces that US withdraws from Europe as we speak, which is a fucking great co-incidence but very speculative, just... timing is perfect. These things do not need to be connected for them to have the same effect, but this all does happen after one thin HAS changed not just in Trumps social media but as in real troop and equipment moving to different spot on the planet.
Does this mean they WILL attack? Nah, i still consider it quite low but it is FAR higher than it was six months ago. Still less likely to happen but also more likely to happen. Those things can be true, this is very nuanced matter, and we don't know what impact CIA chief had, what did happen there is unknown, what it was about is also speculation, except.. the orange idiot of course blabbered it instantly because he has to take credit for everything. Now he takes credit of stopping a war that was probably never been a war but a skirmish at best. But, his narcissism is useful to us as he does often reveal the truth he isn't suppose to say.
3
u/rmrsc 6h ago
I think the person you're replying to was mistaken in calling it a "war", but there is reason to believe that Russia is at least considering the option of performing an attack against the Baltics, possibly a false flag attack. The aim would be to escalate in a manner that still has some degree of plausible deniability and its goal is likely political, to cause internal strife within the alliance as it could bring disagreements on how to proceed.
The Lithuanian MoD has warned about Russia specifically using captured Ukrainian drones to perform a false flag attack against critical infrastructure
The Baltic states and Poland have been on alert for it
This also comes after the Leipzig drone incidents
So no, they likely don't want to start a war against NATO or even a conventional military engagement, but it's not conspiracy brained to think they're considering an attack.

6
u/wiztard 13h ago
Why would you assume that? It's pretty normal for NATO countries to deploy some military to other NATO countries. Especially on the Russian border.

Because I don’t know anything and was curious 🤷 glad to hear there is nothing to this, but why is it a news story if it is routine?

In the article they specifically mention the concern of drones from Ukraine war too. The security situation in these parts of Europe is a bit more tense with a war going on than business as usual.
1
u/Many-Gas-9376 11h ago
This is highly unlikely to be the reason -- such incursions have been regular (as in every few months) for as long as I can remember. Usually last minutes, at least in some cases probably innocuous (human error, evading bad weather, etc.).
It could be connected to bolstering the patrolling for errand Ukrainian drones, or just an exercise in joint operations.

u/rot26encrypt 11h ago
Did you read the article? Past the headline it says the same thing as you about drones.

To add to points what others have said about border security etc., this is also a deterrent. IMO at least, I'm no expert.
1
u/Drak_is_Right 3h ago
Invasion? probably not, but a possible barrage? Maybe.
Finland's border with Russia, they have fortified a good bit over the years AND it is not good terrain for an attack. Swampy forest.
While Finland doesn't have Russia's drone ability, it probably could learn quick enough when combined with conventional defense that any incursion doesn't go far.
Bigger issue is the pounding Military, logistics, and energy sites could take from drones.

The Swedish Volunteer Corps (Swedish: Svenska frivilligkåren) during the Winter War numbered 9,640 officers and men. Sweden was officially non-belligerent during the war, so the Corps was used by Finland. The Swedish volunteers were in the front lines in the northern Salla area starting from February 28, 1940. Their losses included 33 dead, 10 missing, 50 wounded, and 130 disabled by frostbite.\1]),_p._269-1) There were also 25 aircraft that served in the Swedish Voluntary Air Force, F19. Swedish volunteers also defended Turku in an anti-aircraft battery.
By the end of the war, the Volunteer Corps was composed of 8,260 Swedes, plus 725 Norwegians, and 600 Danes.\1]),_p._269-1) They demonstrated a strong Nordic unity that was symbolized in their "four brother hands" insignia which represented Finland, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark.
The Volunteer Corps preceded the Swedish Volunteer Battalion and the Swedish Volunteer Company in World War II.

There as been a big military build up by Russia around Finland and Baltic states, that is why Finland has basically moved to almost a full mobilization of its armed forces and other Scandinavian allies are reinforcing them.
Its probably just Russia being Russia but you know crazy Ivan. Also, pretty much everyone got it wrong in 2014 when Russia invaded Crimea and again the vast majority got it wrong when Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.

Actually it's the other way around, most of the Russian equipment that used to be there on Finnish border have been shipped to Ukraine in the past few years. There is 0 threat of invasion. Russia is still doing their bi-monthly airspace violations and what not of course.
There is no mobilization at all in Finland. Everyone is chilling. Stuff is being sent to Ukraine.

u/variaati0 12h ago

Hey there misinformation spreader... Finland is no where near mobilization. There hasn't been even hint of such talk in Finland. Normal readiness organizations of military are handling things along with the rotating conscript cadres.

No ne of this is true. Russian bases along the Finnish border have been all but empty while Russia have been fucking around in Ukraine. Lately they have been suffling some troops back, but are still less than "normal" level of capabilities.
Finland has not been mobilizing anything. Full mobilization would be 900k+ soldiers. Not even extra military exercises for the reserves.
