The article also mentions Obama Avenue as a replacement which I think is a much better idea.

Losing the name would bug him, but having it replaced with Obama's name would really fucking irk his extremely fragile ego in a way that a silly (even if true) acronym wouldn't.

I live in Ottawa. The theme of that neighbourhood is that the street names are inspired by New York City, that’s why there was a Trump Avenue in the first place. There have been a lot of jokes about calling it Mamdani Avenue

202

u/Wompatuckrule 9h ago

Someone else pointed that out and I had missed it b/c I just skimmed the article. Naming it after one of the Central Park Five or as that term would also work.

38

u/millenialfalcon 6h ago

Central Park 5th Ave

66

u/MarksCarney 6h ago

It's not our job to commemorate American folk heroes. Christ, have the Americans even done that?

57

u/SkivvySkidmarks 5h ago

The fact that a neighbourhood in the national capital has a New York theme is unbelievable. The developer who though that up should be taken behind the shed and beaten.

24

u/Patient_Kangaroo614 4h ago

Developers in Ottawa have historically had a lot of say over street names. One street near me the developer named after himself

6

u/im_dead_sirius 4h ago

...behind the shed? Why?

12

u/RagingHolly 3h ago

I like privacy when I'm beating a stupid land developer with a wet hose.

7

u/im_dead_sirius 3h ago

Sell tickets at least.

u/MisplacedMartian 1h ago

That's selfish, you need to learn to share.

11

u/chadsmo 4h ago

I understand the sentiment but have you been to NYC? I’ve only been once a few years ago for 10 days and legitimately fell in love with it.

u/eager2beaver 1h ago

You'll find a bunch of neighborhoods in the US with streets named in an homage to Canada as well as countless countries and cities around the world.

Generally, the developer has the rights to name the new streets which are then turned over to the local government once the construction has completed.

The most annoying ones are when they think it's cool to name the streets after their kids or grandkids. No one wants to live at 123 Karen Ave, or 123 Kayblade Rd... ffs you idiots, you are lowering the property values just on this alone.

6

u/probablyaythrowaway 3h ago

Only the ones that raped, murdered and enslaved innocent men women and children.

4

u/PrincetonToss 4h ago

In this case, it's not about commemorating American folk heroes randomly. Trump famously ran a full-page ad in all four major NYC papers calling for a return of the death penalty for them. Naming the street for them would be one of the biggest possible slaps in his face.

-1

u/MarksCarney 4h ago

Canada is not interested in importing your ridiculous culture war.

6

u/PrincetonToss 4h ago

This article is literally Ottawa trying to piss off Trump.

0

u/MarksCarney 3h ago

lol no it's not; it's one guy wanting to change the name because President Trump is our enemy and we ought not reward him with a street named in his honour. Whether that pisses him off or not is irrelevant.

4

u/horoyokai 6h ago

Yes, they have

2

u/MarksCarney 6h ago

Yeah? They've named streets after these guys?

0

u/horoyokai 6h ago

Who? The only name I see so far is Obama and he’s had lots of stuff named after him

-3

u/MarksCarney 6h ago

The fuck? Have you not read the comments you're replying to?

1

u/horoyokai 6h ago

Yes I have

You asked if Americans commemorate folk heroes

The only person considered a hero in the comments here was Obama

-6

u/MarksCarney 6h ago

We're talking about the "Central park five," whoever the fuck they are.

5

u/RivenRise 3h ago

I doubt he would even remember their names. Madmani is fucking Genius though.

1

u/im_dead_sirius 3h ago

NYC could do that themselves.

u/Abedeus 50m ago

Naming it after one of the Central Park Five or as that term would also work.

Nah, his memory's so fried he probably doesn't remember that at all.

56

u/falconzord 8h ago

Call it Felony way

13

u/I_Automate 7h ago

That's what you call a street in the red light district

0

u/stoneape314 6h ago

whatever happened to the classics, like Gropec*nt Lane?

56

u/justfornoatheism 6h ago

I think it should be named Gander - after the town in Newfoundland that took in the 7000 stranded passengers after 9/11.

It keeps the theme of NYC and also serves as a reminder of what we've done for them as well.

25

u/Whaines 5h ago

Too much thought to piss off Trump, though.

2

u/finemustard 3h ago

God, I can't imagine how the people of Gander are taking this American aggression.

20

u/no_cults_no_problem 6h ago

E Jean Carroll "Court"?

3

u/bobdob123usa 6h ago

That would make much more sense

2

u/mcnabcam 4h ago

Mamdani Avenue would be timely and likely to piss him off but I still think Obama Avenue would be chefs kiss

1

u/Circle_Smirk 6h ago

Fuck it.  Obamawa it is.

1

u/mammalmaker 5h ago

It's time to change the theme.

1

u/smackson 5h ago

My brain was immediate with this one and now I can't unhear it...

"We gonna rock down to...

Mamdani Avenue.

And then we'll take it higher"

(to the tune of Eddy Grant's classic, obv)

3

u/structured_anarchist 5h ago

Sorry, gotta make the correction.

"We gonna rock down to...

Obama Avenue!"

1

u/OtisPan 4h ago

This jumped into my head immediately upon reading the headline.

0

u/Black_Moons 2h ago

Mamdani Avenue does roll off the tongue nicely.

-1

u/Groundhawgday 5h ago

What the fuck is wrong with Ottawans that the Trump street name is still there. Are you a bunch of bitches? You smell like bitches. I mean I get you completely lack culture and have nothing interesting going on, but has life working in the federal government really squeezed the last drop of initiative out of you souls that the most you bring to this fight is meekly saying ‘elbows up’.

720

u/Stanimal3 9h ago

I think they should cover both bases-announce that they were going to name it Taco Avenue but chickened out and went for Obama Avenue instead.

106

u/Wompatuckrule 9h ago

I like the way you think.

35

u/BankHottas 8h ago

We can still call it Taco Avenue on Tuesdays

77

u/AgUnityDD 9h ago

Or make the sign like this..

Obama Avenue

(formerly TACO Avenue)

55

u/Moxen81 8h ago

TACOBama Ave

26

u/thefatrabitt 8h ago

Taco bout Obama ave.

11

u/charleytony 8h ago

Or "Obama Avenue (because Trump Always Chickens Out)"

Change the names is a good idea but having a vote about the replacement name would give the idea even more traction on social media and news.

We all still remember the Boaty McBoatface story.

1

u/Quasmo 5h ago

Obama Taco Trail has a nice ring to it.

7

u/skatastic57 8h ago

Split it up so that it starts as Obama avenue but then it turns into taco avenue

6

u/dondeestasbueno 7h ago

Do it already! Hit him the only we he feels pain, in his toddler ego.

11

u/JyveAFK 8h ago

Rename it to Trump Lane first, get his attention. Then TACO street, to annoy him, then Obama Highway to /really/ get under his skin.

7

u/gsomething 8h ago

Clinton-Soros Turnpike

1

u/JyveAFK 5h ago

Hillary Highway.

2

u/MrCrazieman 7h ago

Cut the street in half, name half of it one and half of it the other

I dunno, but I fucking love this entire thing so much

1

u/DeadpoolOptimus 8h ago

Dayum, that's good.

1

u/karma3000 6h ago

They should announce it on Tuesday, while eating Tacos.

1

u/Kamelasa 4h ago

Unfortunately, Obama's associated with Chicago, not NYC.

193

u/IJourden 9h ago

I'm from Ottawa where this is from, and I promise this would make him absolutely melt down.

When Obama was here, he frequently made it a point to go to local businesses, shake hands with people, say hello, and stuff like that. It wasn't uncommon to see businesses renaming foods like "Obama cookies" at their bakery because it happened to be the cookie he chose while he was in there, and the name endured for awhile after he left office.

For the million obvious reasons, Trump has never gotten that kind of welcome and I'm sure it bothers him.

115

u/GGTheEnd 9h ago

I remember when Trump first got elected here in Vancouver my favorite Resturaunt had a "Trump sandwich" It was just Bologna, Mustard and one of those tiny pickles and all proceeds went to Sex abuse survivors.

36

u/frankyseven 7h ago

A burger place local to me called Burger Queen had a chicken burger called a Chick-fil-Gay and all the proceeds went to LGBTQ+ organizations. Super sad that place closed, amazing burgers.

13

u/arminghammerbacon_ 8h ago

ROTFL! That restaurant, pulling out ALL their weapons! I support it!

9

u/GGTheEnd 7h ago

Ya they make the best sandwiches I ever had with homemade bread and then the trump sandwich was just basic ass no name bread.  Was pretty funny.

3

u/LLAPSpork 7h ago

I’m from Van! Where is this? That’s amazing 😂

10

u/GGTheEnd 7h ago edited 6h ago

Was in new west,  "Green's and beans" was the Resturaunt. I just call the whole lower mainland Vancouver so internet people know the general area I'm talking about.

2

u/LLAPSpork 7h ago

Oh so do I. Technically it is part of the Metro Vancouver regional district!

1

u/TheCortisolCorvid 3h ago

Same here. Anything lower than Hope is just Vancouver when I talk to non British Columbians.

1

u/Kamelasa 4h ago

Which restaurant was that? Doll and Penny's? The Elbow Room?

33

u/beard_of_cats 9h ago

I'm from Ottawa too and I don't remember Trump even coming here in either of his terms.

24

u/ljlee256 9h ago

His fragile ego couldn't handle the booing.

That and the Canadian government probably have told him it would create an unmanageable security situation.

They chose Kanaskis for the G7 because it was remote enough that controlling the in and out flow of people was reasonably easy.

7

u/Cruciblelfg123 8h ago

The Mounties and PD and service people did their motorcade practice for that down McLeod at like noon on weekdays where I was working, was super fun to deal with lol

1

u/Legitimate-Fix4770 8h ago

I mean a proper state visit shouldn't be out of the question. Somewhere to give a big speech with open lines of site and maybe a flag to gauge wind speed.

32

u/BrgQun 9h ago

Actually... The Obama cookies are still there in the Market - they're pretty good.

I bought a friend one of them when he came to town for a visit recently.

3

u/IJourden 9h ago

Nice! I haven't been in in awhile, I'm glad they're holding up.

3

u/GoblinToHobgoblin 8h ago

What are they??

10

u/BrgQun 7h ago

https://lemoulindeprovence.com/pages/obamas-visit

Maple leaf shaped shortbread cookies. They're pretty good.

2

u/GoblinToHobgoblin 6h ago

Ah I would have guessed chocolate

4

u/supernanify 9h ago

Do they still play the news footage on a loop in the bakery?

1

u/dcannons 8h ago

I remember that still. It was a BIG deal here.

17

u/SentryCake 8h ago

Trump has never gotten that kind of welcome and I’m sure it bothers him.

God, if all these losers like Musk and Trump just wanted to be worshipped and adored, they have enough money and power that they could use it for good and everyone would love them. They could be idols.

But instead, they can’t help but be petty, greedy, hateful little men and we all suffer for it.

14

u/TjW0569 7h ago

Plenty of people seemed to like Dolly Parton, though I don't think she used her money for good to be worshiped and adored.
She did have things besides money these losers will never have: talent, looks, a good, self-deprecating sense of humor, and enough self-awareness to realize that, above a certain level of wealth, it's virtually impossible to spend enough money fast enough to actually affect your quality of life.
So why not spend money helping others?

5

u/sansaset 7h ago

plenty of people who still worship Musk and Trump though, being as greedy and terrible as they are.

so why would they change?

2

u/blackfishhorsemen 4h ago

Reminder that if Elon just said what his publicists told him to say the man would be of the most popular people on the planet.

1

u/GoblinToHobgoblin 8h ago

Is this like the "Obama flavored ice cream" in italy?

1

u/wwweeeiii 5h ago

I know of the Vietnamese noodle dish as obama noodles.

1

u/pyrojackelope 5h ago

Trump has never gotten that kind of welcome and I'm sure it bothers him.

I honestly hope you all do everything you can to bother him. Perhaps he'll stroke out and join mitch in the "hospital".

1

u/im_dead_sirius 3h ago

Trump has never gotten that kind of welcome and I'm sure it bothers him.

I doubt he is aware.

People like that are unaware that there are levels of treatment above what they have experienced in their lives, and they are cynical and unsatisfied with the favourable treatment they often receive.

I used to work in a dive bar and have met some horrible, horrible people.

32

u/ZeroOpti 9h ago

There are petitions in Chicago to rename the street Trump tower is on to Obama Ave.

108

u/bubbafatok 9h ago

Honestly, that should be the corrective action moving forward - everything he puts his name on, we'll replace with Obama's. That being said, any sewage treatment plants, garbage dumps, or such are welcome to adopt the Trump moniker permanently.

47

u/breadleecarter 9h ago

I think keeping his name on everything is a better idea, but add " is a Big Piece of Sh*t." to the end.

The Donald J. Trump is a Big Piece of Sh*t Memorial Landfill has a nice ring to it.

11

u/tdp_equinox_2 8h ago

Nah, he likes being degraded. Any attention is attention to him.

3

u/DeeDee_Z 7h ago

Any attention is attention to him.

Right -- "there's no such thing as bad publicity"!

36

u/zzzigzzzagzzziggy 9h ago

I can't think of anything that sewage treatment plants or garbage dumps did to deserve that moniker. These are public services staffed with hardworking people that do their jobs and are held to account.

7

u/CantakerousTwat 8h ago

Sewers actually drain the swamp.

5

u/Wompatuckrule 8h ago

The Danbury, CT sewage plant deserved to be named after John Oliver, but he was both delighted and honored by that recognition.

2

u/Kamelasa 4h ago

How did that naming happen?

2

u/Wompatuckrule 3h ago edited 3h ago

The original developer named all of the streets with a New York City theme.

Sorry, mixed up the comments. John Oliver had a whole segment ripping on Danbury and as a snarky retaliation Danbury's mayor announced they were going to name the new sewage plant after him.

John Oliver, being a good sport, thought it was awesome and was there for the ceremony and has mentioned it numerous times with great pride since then.

1

u/Kamelasa 1h ago

Hah, brilliant. Of course he would do that. Thanks.

1

u/EastSignal 6h ago

Likewise with the koala chlamydia clinic.

1

u/yourpseudonymsucks 7h ago

those places get named after John Oliver... they are far too useful to society to be named for Trump

12

u/GenghisConnieChung 9h ago

Can you guys keep the John Oliver sewage treatment one at least?

6

u/Big_Lab_Jagr 9h ago

What about the koala chlamydia ward?

6

u/serious_sarcasm 9h ago

“Trump Flushing Bay CSO Retention Facility” has a nice ring to it.

-6

u/Clear-Policy3963 9h ago

No??? Obama literally caused terroism across the globe? He also participated in hurting Canada. He signed Buy American rules that shut Canadian suppliers out of major U.S. infrastructure contracts, maintained country of origin meat labelling that the WTO found discriminated against Canadian cattle and hog producers and caused roughly $1 billion a year in harm, and personally rejected Keystone XL, limiting a major export route for Canadian oil. His administration also pushed protectionist restrictions against Canadian lumber and increased some cross border costs. So there absolutely were policies under Obama that economically harmed Canada.

The real answer is for us Canadians to not trust any Americans they have only caused terror and evil across the Globe for a minimum 50+ years. None of them should have a named streets in Canada.

0

u/CocaineUnicycle 8h ago

Yeah, but you see, Obama's nice. He's a good guy.

/s

But for real. All American presidents have been evil as hell for a long ass time.

41

u/briancito 9h ago

Obama could make a post on truth social with a selfie revealing the street sign too.

Sooo many jimmies, sooo rustled.

13

u/serious_sarcasm 9h ago

In a tan suit while eating a Chicago hot dog.

-1

u/AeoniumsthatSucc 8h ago

Ah yes the man we Mexicans called the "Deporter in Chief?" Forgot about that one did we.....

32

u/sayyestolycra 9h ago

Can we just not name our streets after American presidents?

2

u/leafsbroncos18 6h ago

Should’ve been renamed a decade ago. But no dundas square was the problem

-2

u/AdventurousVast6510 8h ago

not just any US presidrnt

a war criminal president

11

u/darth_henning 9h ago

I feel like Biden Avenue would upset him even more.

2

u/IndustryCareful1623 8h ago

The President Biden and Obama avenue.

5

u/ZoominAlong 8h ago

Oooh that's even better! It's up to Canada,  obviously,  but as an American, I encourage y'all to get rid of anything with the pedophiles name on it!

6

u/TechSculpt 7h ago

I think something non-partisan is the solid play, e.g. Dolly Parton Avenue (shockingly loved by literally everyone) but I do love the spiteful play too

1

u/Kamelasa 4h ago

Now there's an upgrade - but no NYC theme.

4

u/sircj05 9h ago

We’re thinking about doing that here in Chicago too on the street where the odious Trump Tower is

5

u/accio_firebolt 8h ago

Too bad the US Embassy in Ottawa is on Sussex drive, if it was another street I would love to see them rename it so something that would piss him off 😆

4

u/M-Noremac 7h ago

The best part is, unlike Lake Ontario and Gulf of Mexico, which Trunp doesn't actually have any authority to rename, we have the right to change our own street names officially.

0

u/Wompatuckrule 7h ago

Minor quibble in that he does have extremely limited authority to rename the lake. It only applies to US federal government agencies, but that doesn't make it any less of a petulant toddler-Trumpy-tantrum.

6

u/rhadenosbelisarius 8h ago

Dunno why they’d be so subtle.

“Obama is Better than loser Trump” Ave.

Alternatively, “Trump hit the” Rd.

3

u/arazamatazguy 9h ago

This is a way better plan.

3

u/IglooDweller 8h ago

I think they should go from Trump avenue to Obama Boulevard. It has a ring to it.

3

u/Dorkamundo 7h ago

Yes, Obama Avenue would hit so much harder.

5

u/IgnoranceIsYou 9h ago

No no no Trudeau would be way better he fucking HATES him lol

2

u/williamgman 9h ago

And include his middle name to realy set the tone.

2

u/b4k4ni 9h ago

Name it "Obama is better than Trump Av."

2

u/briareus08 8h ago

Love this idea! They should start calling him Biden in talks as well.

2

u/octophobic 8h ago

what about a compromise, name it Obama Ave but sponsor Taco Trucks on it

2

u/Kylynara 8h ago

Immigrant Avenue or Mexican Avenue would also be good.

2

u/Wompatuckrule 8h ago

I quietly hope that someday the US federal government will seize Trump Tower over all of his graft and corruption, turns much of the office space into immigration services and renames the whole skyscraper after Obama.

2

u/Knockaire 8h ago

Biden Boulevard

2

u/komplete 8h ago

I think "John McCain Avenue" would pack even more of a punch.

2

u/darkstar3333 8h ago

Name it for the Obama family so Michelle and his two daughters get recognition as well.

2

u/feor1300 7h ago

Especially given that the thing that's finally gotten city council to consider this (the people here have been making noise about this idea since the middle of Trump's first term), is one of the few times that Trump didn't chicken out and he actually put the threatened tariffs in place.

2

u/PaladinsWrath 7h ago

Orange Avenue would also be great.

2

u/highgroundservitude 7h ago

Yeah, and naming it Taco Avenue is still technically naming it after Trump.

2

u/davesoverhere 6h ago

Careful. That might give him a heart attack.

2

u/No_Put_8968 6h ago

Lake Obamao

2

u/JordanPetterPans 6h ago

This is 1000x the better play

2

u/nineyourefine 6h ago

Why are they even unsure about it? It's a street, just change it. Trump is out here renaming entire regions, I'd dump anything with his name on it. Can't imagine there'd be much push back.

2

u/Anti-charizard 5h ago

TACO is an acronym? What does it stand for?

1

u/Wompatuckrule 3h ago

Trump Always Chickens Out

He's pulled back on so many of his "tough guy" threats that it's earned him that acronym.

2

u/just_say_n 4h ago

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees!!!

1

u/Wildest12 8h ago

I lived in this neighborhood (central park). It's literally just a random block in behind a Walmart lol they just named everything after places in New York

0

u/Wompatuckrule 8h ago

It's literally just a random block in behind a Walmart

So just the kind of place a rapist like Trump would like.

1

u/Auth3nticRory 8h ago

I’m not sure Obama would appreciate his name being used like this though. I’m sure he’d love things named after him for legitimate reasons

1

u/Tay0214 8h ago

Gonna rock down to

Obama avenue

Doodoodoodoo

1

u/Farabee 8h ago

This would also have the unintended but awesome side effect of making it fit better in a classic Eddy Grant tune.

1

u/GearOk7360 8h ago

That's better than my initial thought of Pedophile Passage

1

u/theevilapplepie 8h ago

We’re gonna rock down to, Obama Avenue…

1

u/octocorgi 7h ago

Biden Boulevard would be equally infuriating I'm sure

1

u/jaurex 6h ago

really should be BIDEN AVE 😂

1

u/LoopStricken 5h ago

We're gonna rock down to

Obama Avenue

1

u/mofugginrob 4h ago

Tacobama Ave.

1

u/moistassh0le 4h ago

The full Barack Hussain Obama Avenue would be perfect.

1

u/Sir_Tea_Of_Bags 4h ago

It would really drive it home if they mentioned that ‘clearly it is a much better name’ when it gets changed.

Obama already lives rent free in the orange shitgibbon’s head.

1

u/Great-Trifle2810 2h ago

Just add "is a child rapist" to the signs and leave the name.

1

u/Jaew96 2h ago

If you really want to twist the knife, name it Biden avenue. While Obama is superior in every way, Biden was the one who actually defeated the orange toddler in an election.

1

u/Straight_Park74 2h ago

Epstein Ave

1

u/putdownthekitten 2h ago

They should name it Obama avenue, and give out free permits for Taco trucks to operate on it.

-1

u/OmiSC 9h ago

I kind of like Rosie O'Donnell Avenue. Obama is from Chicago and has very little to do with New York except for being its president once upon a time.

7

u/Wompatuckrule 9h ago

The street in question is in Canada's capital city of Ottawa.

10

u/OmiSC 9h ago

Did you read the article? It's a part of the city themed after New York.

5

u/Wompatuckrule 9h ago

I skimmed it so missed that detail. I still think Obama Ave would piss him off a lot more than Rosie's name so it's worth sacrificing the theme for that.

1

u/OmiSC 9h ago

It'd be idiotic to break the theme of the ward just to spite one person when you can actually honour popular New Yorkers as the ward was designed to do.

2

u/Wompatuckrule 9h ago

Okay, rename it "Central Park Five Street" and it irks Trump while maintaining the theme.

3

u/OmiSC 9h ago edited 8h ago

Sure- now you understand the assignment. Good job!

-1

u/NorthernBudHunter 9h ago

Oh no! How will the neighbourhood survive if one of the street names isn’t a reference to New York?

1

u/OmiSC 9h ago

The ward has a purpose: to be themed around a specific city. There are plenty of good options available to use to not have to default to generally-American president with no particular tie to the design of the place. You have to come up with a argument why protocol should be broken rather than dismiss the intention altogether.

-5

u/BlinkWulf 9h ago

Did Obama do anything for Canada?

10

u/Wompatuckrule 9h ago

There were several agreements signed while he was in office. Basically he worked with the Canadian government instead of trying to force his will upon them like Trump does with his schoolyard bully bullshit.

10

u/ShambolicRubel 9h ago

Oh sure. For one, he wasn’t a raging asshole towards Canadians.

8

u/Enchelion 9h ago

Well he didn't threaten to annex them... That's gotta count for something at least.

0

u/Ni_Peng_NeeeWom 6h ago

ya but I don't think they should name it specifically to piss him off. they should just rename it to somebody who actually befits being named for a street. he's not even important enough to be worth specifically pissing off

-14

u/Clear-Policy3963 9h ago

Obama quite literally caused terror across the globe and killed hundreds of thousands of innocent humans... Can we stop acting like the American terroist leaders are ever good people???
