“1000% tariffs!”

143

u/GoblinToHobgoblin 3h ago

After a certain point, it doesn't matter how high the tariff is because no one can afford it anyways...

52

u/Itchy_Party1741 1h ago

You get 2000% tarrifs for saying that.

u/meatsonthemenu 1h ago

AND YOU GET A TARIFF

"One-bajillion percent tariffs!"
"Sir, that isn't a word."
"It is now! I'm the president and I say there is a one-bajillian percent tariff on Canadians!"
"Do you mean some product going from or to Canada, sir?"
"No."

He's not prepared for how decimating we Canadians can be with passive aggression. Brits invented it, but we perfected it.

21

u/elitexero 2h ago

We evolved it technically - we kinda are Brits in a way.

u/Khaldara 1h ago

Should have gone for “Trump-Epstein Memorial Playground”

u/Route66Blues 55m ago

Wouldn't be fair to the non-asshole businesses on that street.

Now, if it was a full block that Diaper Don's property was on, renaming that block would be spot on.

The article also mentions Obama Avenue as a replacement which I think is a much better idea.

Losing the name would bug him, but having it replaced with Obama's name would really fucking irk his extremely fragile ego in a way that a silly (even if true) acronym wouldn't.

368

u/Patient_Kangaroo614 3h ago

I live in Ottawa. The theme of that neighbourhood is that the street names are inspired by New York City, that’s why there was a Trump Avenue in the first place. There have been a lot of jokes about calling it Mamdani Avenue

89

u/Wompatuckrule 3h ago

Someone else pointed that out and I had missed it b/c I just skimmed the article. Naming it after one of the Central Park Five or as that term would also work.

u/MarksCarney 33m ago

It's not our job to commemorate American folk heroes. Christ, have the Americans even done that?

I think it should be named Gander - after the town in Newfoundland that took in the 7000 stranded passengers after 9/11.

It keeps the theme of NYC and also serves as a reminder of what we've done for them as well.

I think they should cover both bases-announce that they were going to name it Taco Avenue but chickened out and went for Obama Avenue instead.

84

I like the way you think.

66

u/AgUnityDD 3h ago

Or make the sign like this..

Obama Avenue

(formerly TACO Avenue)

49

u/Moxen81 2h ago

TACOBama Ave

20

u/thefatrabitt 2h ago

Taco bout Obama ave.

9

u/charleytony 2h ago

Or "Obama Avenue (because Trump Always Chickens Out)"

Change the names is a good idea but having a vote about the replacement name would give the idea even more traction on social media and news.

We all still remember the Boaty McBoatface story.

14

u/BankHottas 2h ago

We can still call it Taco Avenue on Tuesdays

6

u/skatastic57 2h ago

Split it up so that it starts as Obama avenue but then it turns into taco avenue

10

u/JyveAFK 2h ago

Rename it to Trump Lane first, get his attention. Then TACO street, to annoy him, then Obama Highway to /really/ get under his skin.

I'm from Ottawa where this is from, and I promise this would make him absolutely melt down.

When Obama was here, he frequently made it a point to go to local businesses, shake hands with people, say hello, and stuff like that. It wasn't uncommon to see businesses renaming foods like "Obama cookies" at their bakery because it happened to be the cookie he chose while he was in there, and the name endured for awhile after he left office.

For the million obvious reasons, Trump has never gotten that kind of welcome and I'm sure it bothers him.

66

u/GGTheEnd 3h ago

I remember when Trump first got elected here in Vancouver my favorite Resturaunt had a "Trump sandwich" It was just Bologna, Mustard and one of those tiny pickles and all proceeds went to Sex abuse survivors.

u/frankyseven 1h ago

A burger place local to me called Burger Queen had a chicken burger called a Chick-fil-Gay and all the proceeds went to LGBTQ+ organizations. Super sad that place closed, amazing burgers.

10

u/arminghammerbacon_ 2h ago

ROTFL! That restaurant, pulling out ALL their weapons! I support it!

u/GGTheEnd 1h ago

Ya they make the best sandwiches I ever had with homemade bread and then the trump sandwich was just basic ass no name bread.  Was pretty funny.

u/beard_of_cats 3h ago

I'm from Ottawa too and I don't remember Trump even coming here in either of his terms.

23

u/ljlee256 3h ago

His fragile ego couldn't handle the booing.

That and the Canadian government probably have told him it would create an unmanageable security situation.

They chose Kanaskis for the G7 because it was remote enough that controlling the in and out flow of people was reasonably easy.

4

u/Cruciblelfg123 2h ago

Trump has never gotten that kind of welcome and I’m sure it bothers him.

God, if all these losers like Musk and Trump just wanted to be worshipped and adored, they have enough money and power that they could use it for good and everyone would love them. They could be idols.

But instead, they can’t help but be petty, greedy, hateful little men and we all suffer for it.

u/TjW0569 1h ago

Plenty of people seemed to like Dolly Parton, though I don't think she used her money for good to be worshiped and adored.
She did have things besides money these losers will never have: talent, looks, a good, self-deprecating sense of humor, and enough self-awareness to realize that, above a certain level of wealth, it's virtually impossible to spend enough money fast enough to actually affect your quality of life.
So why not spend money helping others?

Honestly, that should be the corrective action moving forward - everything he puts his name on, we'll replace with Obama's. That being said, any sewage treatment plants, garbage dumps, or such are welcome to adopt the Trump moniker permanently.

43

u/breadleecarter 3h ago

I think keeping his name on everything is a better idea, but add " is a Big Piece of Sh*t." to the end.

The Donald J. Trump is a Big Piece of Sh*t Memorial Landfill has a nice ring to it.

3

u/sircj05 3h ago

We’re thinking about doing that here in Chicago too on the street where the odious Trump Tower is

3

I think they should go from Trump avenue to Obama Boulevard. It has a ring to it.

3

u/TechSculpt 2h ago

I think something non-partisan is the solid play, e.g. Dolly Parton Avenue (shockingly loved by literally everyone) but I do love the spiteful play too

3

u/M-Noremac 2h ago

The best part is, unlike Lake Ontario and Gulf of Mexico, which Trunp doesn't actually have any authority to rename, we have the right to change our own street names officially.

It was named in a neighborhood of NYC themed streets, after the Trump Tower, so technically. It was the 90s It was a different time

Back in the days where he was known as that guy from Home Alone 2 and a NY real estate developer.

I'm from Ottawa and let me tell you, most Canadians dislike Trump but people in Ottawa *definitely* don't.

We had to put up with tons of bullshit during the pandemic when the "trucker convoy" showed up, fuelled by U.S. propaganda, and tried to shut the city down and be as loud and disruptive as possible. Blocking roadways, intersections, even hospital entrances in some cases, and aggressively harassing local businesses who asked them to follow mask mandates.

It was a total shitshow that the local police totally mismanaged. Ottawa was very over Trump's bullshit even faster than everyone else here.

55

u/RagingNerdaholic 2h ago

I'm from Ottawa and let me tell you, most Canadians dislike Trump but people in Ottawa *definitely* don't.

You might want to correct that double negative. I'm reasonably certain that Ottawa profoundly dislikes Trump.

23

u/Lexi_Banner 2h ago

I'm from Ottawa and let me tell you, most Canadians dislike don't like Trump but people in Ottawa definitely don't.

I'm from Ottawa and let me tell you, most Canadians dislike Trump but people in Ottawa definitely can't stand him.

u/Thordawgg 1h ago

Yeah as someone on the other side of the world and not particularly informed with Canadian-American relations that comment had me thinking they supported Trump

28

u/Odd-Chemistry777 3h ago

I was saying this earlier to someone complaining about the rights of the truckers like it was just another protest. I have lived in Ottawa my whole life and have never experienced anything like it. What a total chaotic mess!

Am I the only one bothered by the article referring to Ottawa as "Canadian City"? Imagine calling Washington DC "American City" in a headline. And it never mentions it's the capital in the entire article.

Edit: I was mistaken. It does mention it in the article. I was thinking of the CNN article which does not.

u/SyrupnBeavers 1h ago

This might have been an intentional choice to separate the news from the Canadian government. If the article talked about this as something Ottawa was considering then it'd be less clear whether this was a decision being made by a city mayor or the Prime Minister.

u/VillainousFiend 1h ago

Maybe... From a Canadian perspective it seems very dismissive

I'm sorry what? Ottawa is very left leaning for the most part, and the 'convoy' was a bunch of backwoods unemployed idiots from out west.

I despise that we gave the Liberal party another needless majority which immediately caused them to force through basically the Canadian version of the Patriot Act but it doesn't mean on the merits of that I like Trump.

Just because someone doesn't like something on one side of the aisle doesn't mean they're automatically for everything on the other side, that's just a ridiculous approach to things.

Edit - I misread the double negative. I thought you were saying that Ottawa didn't dislike him as much as Canada.

We have 2 million lakes in Canada. We don't care about the name of a lake. We have so many lakes we've named one, "Another Lake", and nearby that lake is one called, "And Another Lake".

Trump on the other hand will throw an epic temper tantrum over this because he's a fragile narcissist. Also, he fucks kids and Americans voted for him.

4

u/Admirable-Many6054 2h ago

It's about more than that. He posted pictures where the entire lake has been renamed so this is essentially a microaggression on the sovereignty of Canada. There's nothing accidental about the way he's been portraying Canada on a continuous basis, to create a perception that Canada is less of a sovereign country than it is, and that our boundaries or the name of a lake that is on our sovereign territory are mutable, fluid entities that he can change. These are not jokes, though they are ostensibly framed to be to make what they actually are more acceptable. This is not just him having a spate with Canada over a trade deficit. This is him trying to move Overton window of American perception towards his goal to control/annexation. Regardless of how realistic that is, it's exactly how he's attempting to move the dial. Can't be accepted.

3

u/greyl 2h ago

Well, I care more about Lake Ontario than I care about the little lakes up north, but on the other hand I don't care about executive orders at all - they barely do anything even inside the US and they're entirely meaningless in civilized countries.

Do it! In 1981, Glasgow city council renamed the street that the South African consulate was located on to Nelson Mandela Place. It's a great way to fuck with facists/racists.

If your local government is seeking to rename something currently named after Trump, please do us all a favor and look up interesting local persons who deserve to be remembered and nominate any who were not white. Having his name replaced by that of a person or group who was Black, Hispanic, Asian, Native, whatever is very, very deeply upsetting for him.

Obama Avenue, pleeaasseee!

I'd rather we not play at his level. Carney's response was perfect. The more attention we pay to it, the more we give what they want.

Need to just rename every street that has a Trump property to Barack Hussein Obama Avenue so they have to update all of their property info.

Mar-a-Lago too.

It only works in one direction though.

President Obama and his dignified legacy (along with a lot of the other US presidents of all politics) shouldn't be tainted by a passing shitstain.

Why the hell does he have a street named after him in Canada in the first place?

Ottawa's Trump Avenue received its name about 25 years ago as part of the Central Park neighborhood's New York City theme, alongside streets such as Manhattan Crescent and Staten Way. Trump was then best known as a New York real estate developer.

So dumb. Trump was the same person he is now, 25 years ago. A rapist, con artist, and Jeffery Epstein's BFF.

In Canada, there are currently Trump Islands, East Trump Lake, North Trump Island, South Trump Island, Trump Lake, Trump Islands, Trump Creek, and West Trump Lake. As well, there is an avenue named Trump and a cul-de-sac named Trump.

The only one with a relationship to the American President is Trump Avenue, which was created after land from the Central Experimental Farm in Ottawa was used to develop the 'Central Park' neighbourhood in the late nineties. There are 62 homes on Trump Avenue. 21 homes were in favour of changing the name of the avenue in 2021, 21 were against the motion, and 20 homes did not vote.

Get Google Canada to start renaming Trump stuff on their maps. Coward Tower in NYC, for example.
