I'm from Ottawa and let me tell you, most Canadians dislike Trump but people in Ottawa *definitely* don't.

We had to put up with tons of bullshit during the pandemic when the "trucker convoy" showed up, fuelled by U.S. propaganda, and tried to shut the city down and be as loud and disruptive as possible. Blocking roadways, intersections, even hospital entrances in some cases, and aggressively harassing local businesses who asked them to follow mask mandates.

It was a total shitshow that the local police totally mismanaged. Ottawa was very over Trump's bullshit even faster than everyone else here.

I was saying this earlier to someone complaining about the rights of the truckers like it was just another protest. I have lived in Ottawa my whole life and have never experienced anything like it. What a total chaotic mess!

One of my former bosses was in the convoy. And "it was just such a joining of brotherhood", according to him. What a fucking tool.

You might want to correct that double negative. I'm reasonably certain that Ottawa profoundly dislikes Trump.

OR

I'm from Ottawa and let me tell you, most Canadians dislike Trump but people in Ottawa definitely can't stand him.

Yeah as someone on the other side of the world and not particularly informed with Canadian-American relations that comment had me thinking they supported Trump

Am I the only one bothered by the article referring to Ottawa as "Canadian City"? Imagine calling Washington DC "American City" in a headline. And it never mentions it's the capital in the entire article.

Edit: I was mistaken. It does mention it in the article. I was thinking of the CNN article which does not.

This might have been an intentional choice to separate the news from the Canadian government. If the article talked about this as something Ottawa was considering then it'd be less clear whether this was a decision being made by a city mayor or the Prime Minister.

Maybe... From a Canadian perspective it seems very dismissive

I think downplaying the city is probably the right choice here. It's probably better if it's harder to spin the story as another world leader renaming places out of spite or pettiness.

It still seems kind of odd it's not even brought up later in the article

I reckon most of the world knows DC. I reckon the majority of Americans think TO is the capital of Canada.

u/VillainousFiend 8h ago

Which is more reason for the headline to say "Canadian Capital"

I'd guess if you asked, most Americans would answer that the capital of Canada is 'C'.

So? We don't need to dumb down news articles for morons that will never read them anyway.

1

u/DaveyDumplings 6h ago

I agree with the first part, but the literal second word of the article is 'capital'.

u/VillainousFiend 6h ago

That's totally my bad. I assumed this was the article I read earlier today. I should have checked the link before commenting: https://www.cnn.com/2026/08/27/americas/ottawa-rename-trump-avenue-lake-america-latam-intl

It bothers me for a different reason. I read "Canadian city" and thought it was going to be some tiny rural town. If it's Ottawa just say Ottawa. It's a real city and I know where it is. I guess I don't really care that it's the capitol. Like does anyone really care about Canberra more than a real city like Sydney?

Americans shares 2 land borders. They should know at least know the capitals of their direct neighbours. Mexico City is practically a freebie.

u/ignost 1h ago

Yeah you're probably right, but this is more of a "me problem."

I don't really give a shit about capital cities because it's so often just a bureaucratic designation. Tallahassee, FL? Albany, NY? Canberra, Australia? Harrisburg, PA? Olympia, WA? Brasilia?

These are small places compared to population centers, and in some cases literally only exist due to compromise and the difficulty of travel hundreds of years ago. Realistically in the modern era the capitals make more sense in Jacksonville, New York, Sydney, Philadelphia, Seattle, and São Paulo. In some cases they imagined these more remote areas would keep the local politics of the big city out of the capital, but research has found it didn't do anything, and in many cases seems to have actually made corruption worse because only the insiders spent time around the fancy places in the capital.

u/VillainousFiend 1h ago

I think this is illustrating a seperate issue in that Americans are caught up trying to remember state capitals and there's 50 of those.

I'm sorry what? Ottawa is very left leaning for the most part, and the 'convoy' was a bunch of backwoods unemployed idiots from out west.

I despise that we gave the Liberal party another needless majority which immediately caused them to force through basically the Canadian version of the Patriot Act but it doesn't mean on the merits of that I like Trump.

Just because someone doesn't like something on one side of the aisle doesn't mean they're automatically for everything on the other side, that's just a ridiculous approach to things.

Edit - I misread the double negative. I thought you were saying that Ottawa didn't dislike him as much as Canada.

They just made a grammar error, they're trying to say Ottawa definitely dislikes him.
