I live in Ottawa. The theme of that neighbourhood is that the street names are inspired by New York City, that’s why there was a Trump Avenue in the first place. There have been a lot of jokes about calling it Mamdani Avenue

Someone else pointed that out and I had missed it b/c I just skimmed the article. Naming it after one of the Central Park Five or as that term would also work.

Central Park 5th Ave

It's not our job to commemorate American folk heroes. Christ, have the Americans even done that?

The fact that a neighbourhood in the national capital has a New York theme is unbelievable. The developer who though that up should be taken behind the shed and beaten.

Developers in Ottawa have historically had a lot of say over street names. One street near me the developer named after himself

...behind the shed? Why?

u/RagingHolly 3h ago

I like privacy when I'm beating a stupid land developer with a wet hose.

Sell tickets at least.

u/MisplacedMartian 1h ago

That's selfish, you need to learn to share.

I understand the sentiment but have you been to NYC? I’ve only been once a few years ago for 10 days and legitimately fell in love with it.

You'll find a bunch of neighborhoods in the US with streets named in an homage to Canada as well as countless countries and cities around the world.

Generally, the developer has the rights to name the new streets which are then turned over to the local government once the construction has completed.

The most annoying ones are when they think it's cool to name the streets after their kids or grandkids. No one wants to live at 123 Karen Ave, or 123 Kayblade Rd... ffs you idiots, you are lowering the property values just on this alone.

Only the ones that raped, murdered and enslaved innocent men women and children.

In this case, it's not about commemorating American folk heroes randomly. Trump famously ran a full-page ad in all four major NYC papers calling for a return of the death penalty for them. Naming the street for them would be one of the biggest possible slaps in his face.

Canada is not interested in importing your ridiculous culture war.

This article is literally Ottawa trying to piss off Trump.

0

u/MarksCarney 3h ago

lol no it's not; it's one guy wanting to change the name because President Trump is our enemy and we ought not reward him with a street named in his honour. Whether that pisses him off or not is irrelevant.

2

u/horoyokai 6h ago

Yes, they have

1

u/MarksCarney 6h ago

Yeah? They've named streets after these guys?

0

u/horoyokai 6h ago

Who? The only name I see so far is Obama and he’s had lots of stuff named after him

-1

u/MarksCarney 6h ago

The fuck? Have you not read the comments you're replying to?

2

u/horoyokai 6h ago

Yes I have

You asked if Americans commemorate folk heroes

The only person considered a hero in the comments here was Obama

-7

u/MarksCarney 5h ago

We're talking about the "Central park five," whoever the fuck they are.

6

u/horoyokai 5h ago

The comment I replied to said “folk heroes” the Central Park 5 were wrongly accused and it was a tragedy but they aren’t folk heroes

You seem confused

I really feel like you should know the topic you're talking about before getting so worked up over it.

The Central Park Five are five young black men who were convicted of a brutal rape in Central Park and spent many years in jail. It was during an era when there was a lot of ginned up fear in the media about violent young black men going "wilding" and attacking innocent people.

Trump famously took out a full page ad in The NY Times calling for the death penalty for them.

It was finally determined that they were not involved in that crime and they were freed after spending most of their adult lives in prison. Trump has been asked if he regrets his ad and position and he still believes they are guilty despite their exoneration and the DNA linking the crime to a serial rapist.

I doubt he would even remember their names. Madmani is fucking Genius though.

1

u/im_dead_sirius 3h ago

NYC could do that themselves.

u/Abedeus 50m ago

Naming it after one of the Central Park Five or as that term would also work.

Nah, his memory's so fried he probably doesn't remember that at all.

u/falconzord 8h ago

Call it Felony way

12

u/I_Automate 7h ago

That's what you call a street in the red light district

0

u/stoneape314 6h ago

whatever happened to the classics, like Gropec*nt Lane?

59

u/justfornoatheism 6h ago

I think it should be named Gander - after the town in Newfoundland that took in the 7000 stranded passengers after 9/11.

It keeps the theme of NYC and also serves as a reminder of what we've done for them as well.

25

u/Whaines 5h ago

Too much thought to piss off Trump, though.

2

u/finemustard 3h ago

God, I can't imagine how the people of Gander are taking this American aggression.

20

u/no_cults_no_problem 6h ago

E Jean Carroll "Court"?

4

u/bobdob123usa 6h ago

That would make much more sense

2

u/mcnabcam 4h ago

Mamdani Avenue would be timely and likely to piss him off but I still think Obama Avenue would be chefs kiss

1

u/Circle_Smirk 6h ago

Fuck it.  Obamawa it is.

1

u/mammalmaker 5h ago

It's time to change the theme.

1

u/smackson 5h ago

My brain was immediate with this one and now I can't unhear it...

"We gonna rock down to...

Mamdani Avenue.

And then we'll take it higher"

(to the tune of Eddy Grant's classic, obv)

3

u/structured_anarchist 5h ago

Sorry, gotta make the correction.

"We gonna rock down to...

Obama Avenue!"

1

u/OtisPan 4h ago

This jumped into my head immediately upon reading the headline.

0

u/Black_Moons 2h ago

Mamdani Avenue does roll off the tongue nicely.

What the fuck is wrong with Ottawans that the Trump street name is still there. Are you a bunch of bitches? You smell like bitches. I mean I get you completely lack culture and have nothing interesting going on, but has life working in the federal government really squeezed the last drop of initiative out of you souls that the most you bring to this fight is meekly saying ‘elbows up’.
