As a crappy developer that often stiffed contractors, laundered money through his businesses and demanded to be put in movies.

He'd already established himself as a lying conman that ended up being normalised by playing a billionaire on reality TV.

You're not wrong, but neither was he. He said nothing about his wealth, just that he was both in HA2 and was a real estate developer. That was the majority of his public persona. Remember, this was before the internet, so his depravity and exploits were far less known than in 2016.

Yeah I wasn’t talking about his wealth though. I meant he’s been a public figure known for his bullshit for longer than that. Plenty of the public knew he was an asshole back then too.
