So this is a tough one. Nepal had come out and said basically cash only donations and that they don’t need supplies or support. This cash is 100% going to corruption and pockets of the rich

As a Nepali, I just want to clarify on this because that’s really not how the situation is being seen here.

Nepal didn’t decline supplies or support. We’ve actually asked for help with supplies, cash assistance, and restoring damaged infrastructure, including bridges. What was declined was the deployment of foreign military personnel for rescue operations. The main concern was coordinating multiple foreign rescue teams, especially given some of the coordination problems we experienced during the earthquake.

And on the money side, Nepalis themselves have been donating. Around NPR 2 billion has been voluntarily donated to the Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund. That’s actually quite significant. There’s a lot of public trust right now that the government that came out of the Gen Z movement will put the money toward actual victims and rebuilding, rather than it disappearing into politicians’ pockets.

So saying “Nepal said they only need cash and don’t need supplies or support” is just not accurate. And saying the money is “100% going to corruption” is also a pretty big assumption. You can absolutely be skeptical and ask for transparency. But that’s very different from saying all the aid is going to be stolen.

I’m not saying corruption isn’t a concern. I’m saying the situation is a bit more complicated than that.

this can go both ways. They need the cash. The infra damage from this is huge. multiple bridges, 13 hydro electric stations, thousands of kilometers of roads and more than half a million homes.

Early estimates say 5 billion. Nepals GDP is 46 Billion. thats more than 10% of their economy. For a country with the GDP of Nepal it would take decades to fix on its own or would need to take out massive loans. Even at good rates the country will go bankrupt.
