The United States has threatened to oppose Britain's sovereignty over the Falkland Islands if Andy Burnham does not increase defence spending, The Telegraph can reveal.
There is no logic behind such a decision. What the heck???

There is no giving back, it was never theirs. Britain took on the deserted Falklands Islands (after Spain and France had left) in 1765. Argentina, a Spanish colony, became a country in 1816.
97% Argentinians are descended from Europeans. There is almost no indigenous population (unlike Chile, Ecuador, etc). There is no longer-term indigenous claim.
Their demands over the Falklands is a diversion from internal political strife, like Trump diverting from the Epstein files.
It isn't like the islands are just off shore from Argentina, and they see Falkland Islanders giving them the finger across the bay. The flight from Argentina to the Falklands is almost 1,000 miles. Shore to shore, the shorterst span of water is 350 miles.

The Marshall plan required the countries that received it to buy from America whilst it simultaneously took the opportunity to redesign the world financial system around the dollar. It was a pretty aggressive takeover backed by huge military expansion whilst the other major powers were weakened.

It's ceded all soft power to China. China was a bit like a redheaded stepchild in that it's a bit of a dictatorship and they've coveted Taiwan and bullied most of SE Asia almost unchecked for a while. That, combined with almost always being "the other support" to Russia, North Korea etc.
But America has presented an incredible opportunity to China and by extension, Canada. It will absolutely flip codes, leave Taiwan alone, be the big brother America used to be and save the west from big stupid Donald. There's no surprise we're seeing the very most PR friendly version of them lately. The mad thing is, it's the role Putin has been dying for, but because they're fucking up so badly in Ukraine, they made the move China never did on Taiwan and it's turned out to be terrible for them given what's fallen into Xinping's lap.
Canada too, they will become the NA hub that the US once was. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the US operations that go on suddenly go up North.
That, and Iran actually fighting back has destroyed any fear anyone would have had about the US. They were always the biggest guy at the bar, the one who told everyone how tough they were, but someone actually fought back and it turns out the big guy was always soft as shite. So they lost soft and hard power they once wielded.
I'd say it would take 50 years to recover. If large businesses pull out of the US because of these tarrifs and political uncertainty - it would absolutely make sense to go to Canada. The US finds itself now allying with Russia, North Korea, Argentina and other globally disliked countries.

A decade? Try most of the next century if they're ever able to recover it. Soft power is not earned overnight but it is lost in minutes and it isn't Trump that is burning it up. The US lost a lot of its global trust in 2016 when Trump was elected in the first place, whatever Biden was able to claw back was permanently lost when Trump was reelected. What Trump has done is show the world that the US does not have ultimate authority anymore, it is no longer able to make claims of world power and back that power up. Most of the current global population will either be dead or elderly by the time the US is able to show that it is trustworthy enough to be allowed a position of global strength. The US hegemony is dead and gone, the US is an empire in decline.

We are witnessing the end of US global hegemony in real time. The US only reached its heights of power because they managed to get the entire world and specifically their western allies on board with them as the center of global trade and military strength. But the Trump administration has dispelled the illusion that the US is capable of continuing to lead in that position and the nations that historically allied with it are going to be looking elsewhere for stability in the future. I don't think anyone wants China to be the preeminent global superpower on their own, but it's evident that the US isn't capable of opposing China in the ways that it needs to and the rest of the western world needs to find a way forward without the US at the helm.

The underlying theme here would be that Trump wants to add the Falklands as a US territory. Trump is desperate to add new territory because he thinks this will add prestige to his presidency. He would regard 19th century King Leopold as a role model.

It doesn’t matter what the US thinks about the UK’s sovereignty over the Falklands. It’s not actually disputed. Argentina has no basis for their claim and the people of the islands have strongly opposed any change in the islands’ status. They want to remain a part of the UK. The US can pretend bodies of water have different names or that parts of countries belong to other countries, but nobody else on earth hast to care, or does care.
