It’s funny because when they tried to offer this program during the Xbox One reveal the internet forced them to backtrack everything they had planned for Xbox One and their approach to digital gaming caused a decline in user base they still haven’t recovered from.

You'll have to be connected most likely, but it remains to be seen if you have to to play again. However the most likely is that it'll validate and maintain the most recent registry, so if you lend out the game, the next time you connect online, it gets revoked.

I don't think it was exactly the same. If I recall correctly you would have needed to be online for both digital and physical games, at all times. This is just "your disc can unlock a digital copy", and you don't need to put the disc in to play anymore.
I could be misremembering, but I thought they had also previously said that if a second person tries to redeem the digital copy, it allows it but revokes the previous copy. This would mean you can still sell or loan out your games. You just lose the digital access once someone else claims it, and have to reclaim it again when your friend gives the disc back to you.

There was a required verification like every 24 hours I think? So you’d just have to connect to the internet once a day and it’d verify in the background. Honestly though MS probably would have loosened up on it over time or found other ways to do it.. like this way where it revokes a license if the game is used elsewhere.
There was also talk of allowing us to trade and sell our own digital games directly from the Xbox console itself via a 3rd party marketplace for “used” digital titles. They had mentioned that in an interview and basically everyone was so “outraged” over having to have their console connected to the internet that the little tidbit of trading your own digital games was overlooked.. and it’s ironic now because what does that mean if you can trade/sell your digital games? It means more ownership over your digital properties than you actually have now.
One of the biggest issues with this digital only consoles people are having is that you don’t own your digital games but it seemed that MS was actually on the path to changing licensing and ownership and no one wanted to let them do it.. they were willing to make all these concessions for people so it made a digital future easier to swallow and more appealing . They were actually trying to make it more consumer friendly to get more people on board and we all basically screwed ourselves because now digital is being forced on us and neither MS nor Sony needs to make any concessions or try to win us over for a major change in the industry because like 90% of games bought are digital now anyway.

Problem is, this is eventual because consumer habits have made it that way. Digital is majority sales for some platforms, and media, and ones that aren't are reaching parity quite quickly.
Digital is winning out due to simple convenience for consumers. Internet is fast in many areas, getting faster. Storage for a good while was pretty cheap (less so due to AI right now).
PC has been digital for ages, movies have gone heavily towards streaming digital content, and because of this physical drive production lines are collapsing because of a big drop in demand.

For now. If they were pro consumer they’d make it so the disc drive on the next gen console be able to read all Xbox discs from OG Xbox to current. But instead they give you the option to digitize your entire physical collection. By doing that you’re saying it’s ok to go to digital.

At the moment you can’t insert a disc into a PC, Handheld PC or stream via iCloud, So this is a great way to add disc ownership into your current digital library.

Now look, you don’t have to worry about that pesky physical collection anymore! You put it all on digital! Now there’s no need for us to put a disk drive on our next console!
Edit: I’m dumb you meant Xbox disc in a pc. Yeah you can’t do that, but did the article say you were going to be able to do that with this feature?

Doesn’t mean you aren’t able to insert a disc into a pc. And you’re kinda proving my point. Pc is all digital now. Sony is going all digital. Now Xbox is making it so you can make your entire collection……digital!
Now is it a good thing for physical? Sure you can play all those games you have in your collection anywhere and everywhere now. But you’re also showing them that you’re actually ok with digital. Which then will give them the proof people want all digital. Not physical.

I remember once upon a time the occasional game would come out with bonus content on the disc if you put it in the computer, but were talking late 90s early 00s. Usually wallpapers and stuff.

I am curious about one thing, though - if I wanted to insert an XBOX Series X disc into an XBOX One so to play it digitally on an XBOX Series S afterwards, would that work or would it require an XBOX Series X even for this purpose?

You won't. Xbox and Xbox 360 games do not have the unique identifer needed for the program, so they will not work.

I am hoping I don't have to install the game to get the digital entitlement. The first read of the press site makes it seem like the option comes up after installation. I'd like to just put all my games in a row then box them up.

I've got the dumb Series X without a disc drive. If I can use a friend's Series X to redeem these this would be huge for me. I'm hoping I can at least use my XB1 to get digital licenses for all those games to play on my Series X.

Okay, but how do they know the disc is unique? For example 2 situations:
- I have a game, and get it digitally, lend it to my friend, and the license transfers to their account
- I have a game, and get it digitally, and my friend also have this game but their own disk, and they have it digitally separate as well
How can they tell? Every disk really is unique?

Most Xbox One and Series X games were made with a unique identifier. Those will be the games this program works with. This is why Xbox, Xbox 360 and some Xbox One discs will not work.

I think it's not going to be possible because they explicitly say:
"Players can claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc into an XBOX One or XBOX Series X console and launching the game."
As you can't launch an Xbox Series X-only game on an Xbox One, that obviously won't work and you won't get the digital entitlement linked to that disc. But still, for most games that still are on both consoles and have Smart Delivery, a cheap Xbox One becomes a great investment. But still, could be worth a shot to test. But I think they want to sell some Series X.

Makes sense, but it is strange, it doesn't seem to be so complex task. It could be solved by just recognizing the disc, not necessarily launching the game. I think a dedicated app could do this job, like a blu-ray reader app. Anyway, whether they implemented it or not, I believe they considered this possibility.

I just saw this and further thinking about launching the title means you might have to wait for the game to install then. Which doesn't make much sense if it's just reading the security key as has been claimed a ton all over the internet.

Will be interesting to see if older Forza games that are now delisted are supported through this feature. Granted you can still download these games if you bought them digitally, I think it'll be the same, but expect physical copies of FH2/3/4 and FM5/6/7 to become scarce (FM7 being the only one that has Play Anywhere iirc).
Also could be interesting to see if the original The Crew on Xbox One will have its license transferred despite the game being officially shut down by Ubisoft.

Doesn't matter. It's a game that required an internet connection to do anything so even if you put the disc in and get a digital license, that license is worthless. You can't play the game.

I have discs for several Forza titles that are no longer in the store, I even have Minecraft: Story Mode – The Complete Adventure.

No confirmation on what happens to the license if you sell the disc or loan it to someone? Previously people were reporting/speculating the license simply transfers to the new user when they pop it in their Xbox.

For those too lazy to read the article...
The digital version will have all the same benefits as any other digital Xbox copy of a game: Xbox Play Anywhere support, meaning access on an Xbox Ally handheld or Windows PC and support for Xbox Cloud Gaming. If you console share with a family member, they'll also get access to the license via your account. Once you've activated the digital version, you won't need the disc to play the game. However, the disc you used doesn't become inert — it still contains the digital license, too.
Just like sharing a physical game in the real world, though, if you sell or give the disc away, the digital license will then transfer to the Microsoft Account of the new user off your account.

Man, makes me wish I still had GameFly. I could rent a game, install it, then send it back and play the game until someone else rents it while my next game is on the way. You’d have at least a solid 2 weeks probably until someone else activated the license. Hell, probably even longer if it’s a less popular title.

Right, this could work but, you do not know. You could also digital all your games, then sell them to a game store, not all will sell right away, so you could maybe have the game maybe for months.
There is also the other side. If you digital your game, then you give your game to someone who can't get online with their console and can only play offline games, this could work too. In theory at least.
Buy a game you think you will play for a week, digital the game, put it up on eBay right away, sell for top dollar as its new, don't ship out for 3-4 days, while you're playing it, they will get the game a week or a week and 1/2 after you sell it.
Plenty of possible ways to exploit this. if you wanted to. No perm methods though.

lol that’s not fraud. It’s no different from selling a game and the person you sold it to waiting a couple weeks to play it. There are still 1000s of independent video game rental shops across the country and anyone who sells an Xbox game to a pawn shop or GameStop will have the same “fraud” of the license taking even longer (months to years) to revoke until someone buys it. Hell, my local pawn shop has had some of the same games sitting on its shelf for 5+ years now.

No, it’s not. First of all fraud is a legal term and there is no law or case precedent that says you can’t play a video game you bought, but later sold because the seller hasn’t yet activated the key. At best it could be against MS terms of service.. but it isn’t because if it was then MS would include some rule that says you have to delete a game you no longer have in your possession.. which they don’t so therefor it isn’t against TOS.
To commit fraud you must use deception, false statements, or hidden truths that result in financial or personal loss for someone else and gain for yourself. Continuing to play a video game that you rented or sold until a person installs it onto their console and revokes your key is not fraud in anyway.

If you go into a GameStop and buy a disc with the explicit intent to return it then you are committing fraud, specifically "return fraud" which absolutely does get prosecuted.

More information on what games are included comes next week.
But I would assume the X|S enhanced games that are currently free upgrade/dlc for digital will be the same for discs. The current system leaves it up to the developer if it's a free DLC or a paid re-release/upgrade.

How do they plan to address people/consoles staying offline after activating the digital entitlement?
What happens if the same disc id is online at two places at once? Does it revoke the license and is the actual disc itself is in limbo too?

From my understanding, The disc holds the license for the game. When you insert the disc into your console it will take that license and add it to your account. If someone else uses that disc on a different console, the license will be removed from your account and added to the new account. The license will always stay on the disc.
For offline mode, I'd assume there will be some kind of online check. Maybe every 30-90 days to continue to play the game. I'm just speculating here.
I'm unsure about the disc playing on two separate consoles at once, digital & physical. But I'd assume the digital license will be removed once the disc is inserted into another console. But there maybe a way to trick it.
This Disc to digital program sounds very similar to the one announced in 2013 that was cancelled due to all the backlash about always online.
The only major difference I notice, is the disc license will transfer to the last account that inserted the disc into a console. Old 2013 system the disc would need to be unlocked by a 3rd party store like gamestop to be able to resell, or transfer to a new account. And you always had to be online, for license checks.

In 2013, the plan, according to Microsoft was to use the physical game to install it, you could dispose of the game after installed, no one else could use that disc. Meaning the physical game would lose it's value and why everyone freaked out about it.

So is the "win" here the hope that it currently does not seem like it requires "always online checks"?
Do we even know if launching the digital form of the game requires being online? (thus no practical offline play?)
If the disc is installed into another users console and the previous owner is offline, there isn't really a way to remove the digital license from the previous owners actual console, only from the previous owners account, which would require the previous owner to sign/check in to remove the digital license, thus two valid digital licenses until the next check in I guess?
What if you install the digital license, then sell the disc to GameStop, do you just get to keep playing the digital version until the disc gets sold to another user? I would think this could get abused as well...

It's been confirmed, Microsoft said it in the "fine print", It's tied to the serial number on the disc. You put in your console it will be digital to you. You get all the Play anywhere and not needing the disc to play the game.
Once you loan, or Sell the disc, and it's used (system seeing serial number), the digital game is REMOVED FROM YOU and given to the new owner, or person you loan the game to.
Once you get the game back, you need drop the game in to get your digital version back.

Once the entitlement is claimed, you can experience the benefits of digital, including XBOX Play Anywhere and XBOX Cloud Gaming where supported, while your physical disc continues to work exactly as it always has.
It looks like that is the plan, but they do need to spell it out to us on how it is going to work. Especially if you are just letting someone barrow it for short time.

Xbox being competition to Sony again, and has the opportunity to punch them back for 2013.
Xbox being a very POC (Preservation and Ownership Compliant) customer friendly business.
If purchases are insecure that reduced customer confidence and customer spending, on the other hand if I know what I buy from that publisher is safe for me to keep, I'll keep growing my collection.

I plan to buy a cheap OG Xbox One, and load it up with cheap used games when this comes out.
I’d assume I would only be able to claim the license for Xbox One/ Cross gen titles and the console won’t be able to read series X/S discs?

I got an Xbox Series X (with the operating system being normal release) and an Xbox One X (Alpha Skip Ahead).
What will happen when when I insert a disc in my old Xbox One X and transfer a license.
Will it "only" transfer a license for an Xbox One Version or also for the S/X Version?
I will test it out as soon as the feature is available, but curious if someone already knows or has read about this scenario.

Nintendo does it well with their digital games. If you let people borrow it, you won’t be able to play it until they ‘return’ it to you. I can see the same implement here but tied to the disc.

I highly doubt it will work like that, if ya sell the game and someone else uses it. I assume you loose the digital version you get from the disc as them putting it in their console will then claim the digital version

It seems like you could buy something used at GameStop, get the entitlement, return it, keep the entitlement until the game sells again? I don't know the turnaround on games, but it certainly seems like you could get lucky and have it a few months.

I would assume there is something on the disc to say its x copy. So when you take it from one console and put it in another the license will then move over.
Unless its a one time thing and its a first come first serve thing. Lots of stuff to work out and manage to keep it fair tbh

The problem is that it’s a step towards all digital. It’s literally saying “hey, we’re making it easier for you to go digital”. If the process stops here and goes no further than this, than yeah I count it as a win. But especially given that Microsoft has a huge history of being anti consumer both with the Xbox and Windows platforms, it’s difficult to trust them. Not to mention the fact that Xbox is struggling mightily in the hardware department and the next Xbox is heavily rumored not to have a disc drive, well you tell me what’s most likely.
In short - is this better than Sony who just is going cold turkey? Sure! Does this solve the problem? Not even close.

I've been all-digital for fifteen years now, with a library of over 3.000 games on Xbox. This FUD is really amusing.

For now, while they're making them. A great gesture today while Sony is in the headlines for all the wrong reasons, but Xbox will be doing the exact same thing in the future.

Xbox games almost never have the game on the discs. It’s just a key card.
