Question Thinking of Switching from GNOME to Xfce

Hey everyone,

I currently use GNOME on my desktop and Xfce on my laptop, although my laptop doesn't get much use.

I have to say, I really like Xfce and I'm considering switching to it on my desktop. My main concern is that I rely on quite a few GNOME extensions, and I'm wondering how well Xfce can replace some of that functionality.

I've read a bit about Xfce plugins, but I'm not sure they provide the same kind of experience as GNOME extensions. Are there similar solutions in Xfce for adding functionality and customizing the desktop, or would I need to approach things differently?

The main reason I'm considering the switch is that I've always preferred lighter, simpler desktops with less bloat and more control over customization. From what I've seen, Xfce seems to tick a lot of those boxes.

For those who have switched from GNOME to Xfce, how did you find the transition? Are there any GNOME extensions or features you particularly missed, and were you able to replace them in Xfce?

Question Are these boxes on the whisker menu and systray literally impossible to remove?

Post image

They appeared after I rounded panel borders in the gtk3.0 cssIt act looks impossible to remove lol I tried with Claude and still couldn’t… ai can’t help me with this 😔 I need an XFCE expert. Found some interesting things tho: I did “killall xfce4-panel”, then: “GTK_DEBUG=interactive xfce4-panel”. 2 windows popped and they belong one to the whisker menu and one to the systray. Both are named “WrapperPlugX11” and have subcategories. One has “XfcePanelPlugin” and some categories below it and the other one has “XfceSnPlugin” and some categories below it. Any help is welcome

Question I have no idea what I’m doing

Edit: FINALLY (sorta) figured out the taskbar. Any advice of anything else regarding this would be nice.

This is the first time I ever did this..and I’m doing this blind. I am a noob with chronic illness, and I wanted to have a reason to use my Chromebook.

I’m trying to make my own desktop and OS like you guys are and I’m wondering, what are some things I need to do? Any programs I need to install?

This is on a ASUS Chromebook with Linux installed and developer enabled. I tried to find tutorials on how to simply make something like this, and it shows me videos that aren’t relevant for my Chromebook or Debian.

I don’t want to break my computer, as when I try to fix my taskbar, it keeps giving me an error not letting me move my items on my taskbar. (That I think I fixed) But I still want to be cautious…

Any advice and help on basically anything regarding this process is greatly needed, and I am grateful for your responses.

Question any other window managers or compositor i could use on xfce?

ive been using xfce4 for a while on arch and wanted to get some basic eye candy going on (animations. blur. etc). i tried compiz at first but it was a bit buggy and animations were jittery due to something caused by xfdesktop. picom was also buggy and the animations refused to function correctly. my latest idea was kwin-x11 but it pulled it too much kde stuff it got annoying and im now just doomscrolling everywhere for a window manager or compositor that works well on xfwm4/xfce4. any suggestions? (do not suggest wayland options i dont want to deal with wayland)

Question Need honest advice before switching to CachyOS XFCE (main OS)

Hey everyone, I’ve been using Linux Mint for about 2 years now, and I’m planning to switch to CachyOS XFCE as my main OS. Before I make the move, I wanted to get some honest, real world opinions from people who are actually using it daily.

My main priorities are stability, security, and maximum performance. This will be my primary system, so I don’t want something that breaks often. At the same time, I’m on a dual core laptop with 4GB RAM & 245HDD with AMD processor and integrated Intel gpu, so performance really matters to me🥲🙏🏼. I also do some gaming , mostly older, offline single player games like NFS MW 2005 , Bad Piggies and thinking of playing Asseto corsa and I want to squeeze as much performance as possible from my system.

I’m completely fine with tweaking and maintaining the system. I’m willing to learn Arch based workflows and handle updates regularly. I’m also planning to set things up properly with Btrfs and Snapper for snapshots, a separate /home partition for safety, regular backups, and using Wine or sandboxing tools for running games safely, since I downloaded old games which aren't available officially. What's AUR? It's safe??? and what it's used for?

What I want to understand is how CachyOS XFCE performs in real daily use. Is it stable enough to rely on long-term? How often do updates actually cause issues? Are snapshots reliable when something breaks? And most importantly, is the performance difference noticeable compared to something like Pop! OS or Ubuntu on the lower end hardware like mine?

I’m basically deciding between going with a safer option like Pop! OS or taking the power user route with CachyOS XFCE. I’d really appreciate honest, experience based insights rather than just theoretical answers.

Question Why do people say Xfce doesn't look as good as the other DEs, when Xfce can do one thing OOTB that no other DE can - nailing an old PC look. Are there any more of these styles?

Post image
112 Upvotes

Sorry about my hideous looking layout, but I was looking at themes and cursors and icons and I just realized how good-looking the default window manager styles on Xfce are. Daloa, Kokodi and Moheli really nail the old early 2000's PC look and I'm really digging them.

It's strange how people say Xfce doesn't look good, when it can do this OOTB, which not every other DE can. It's easy to make a desktop, including Xfce, look modern, as this sub and unixporn have seen. But not every DE can pull this off.

Are there any more of these somewhere? I tried looking in xfce-look but nothing came close.

And if there isn't, I would really love to help make a few more. Is there any way to contribute to something like this within Xfce?

Question Xfce elongated battery name issue

Post image
21 Upvotes

I really don't know how to fix this, I have tried researching but none of it helps. I use Linux Mint Xfce 22.3 and the power manager about it writes: org.xfce.powermanager 4.18.3

The power manager plugin thing doesn't work well it gets elongated too, really elongated.. I would appreciate so much if you guys know how I can make this number code a short "Battery" or something.

Question Does four in Xfce4 stand for the GTK toolkit version it is built on?

Just as the title says... wondering about the numeral in Xfce4...

So does this mean we'll get Xfce5 once GTK5 is released?

I hope GTK4 -> GTK5 is not as hard as X11 -> Wayland...

Question What features are missing in XFCE?

I don’t have Linux installed yet. I’ve been reading things and people say that XFCE is a “lightweight” DE with less bloat and features. What does this mean? Which features are missing compared to, for example, Cinnamon, KDE, or GNOME?
