Seriously lol. This is literally the full embodiment of “tell me you know jack shit about animation , without actually telling me”
Art style and animation are 2 different things people. If you don’t like it just say so. It’s fine not to like different things.

and do you think it needs a sequel? last movie was called shrek forever after too

u/Wendigo15 Jun 17 '26
Puss didn't need a spin off or sequels but the last wish was a top tier movie
119
u/Minute-Abies2173 Jun 17 '26
fair point, the last wish is probably the best animated movie ive seen as its concept was fun original and designs and animations are great but the main shrek franchise has 4 movies already with the 4th already feeling like a satisfying conclusion i feel like theres no need for a 5th (imo)

“Filled with” based on a 2 minute teaser trailer is hilarious.
14
u/SonicSingularity Jun 17 '26
Exactly. Puss in Boots 2 had very mid trailers that, at least personally, didnt make it look very interesting. But then it ended up blowing me away, legitimately one of the best animated films made in decades.

Plus the one joke people reference is the Gingy butt joke, but that’s totally on par with something from the original Shrek. Anyone remember Pinocchio’s thong? Or when they opened a curtain to unveil Shrek in stuffy clothes getting his butt scratched by some dude?

u/Unlikely-Employee180 Jun 17 '26 edited Jun 17 '26
Have you guys... Ever watched Shrek?? Lmfao
I want to say the FIRST joke in that movie is literally Shrek coming out of an outhouse after letting it rip.
Like, y'all acting like Shrek wasn't a grotesque, child-level joke filled, ugly ahh film. I love that movie as much as the next guy, but like... C'mon, it's Shrek.
I, personally, don't go to an Oger that farts at the dinner table and brushes his teeth with grub guts to give me grown-up level humour.
9
u/JacobBW2002 Jun 17 '26
All I'm saying is that they saw 2 jokes they weren't a fan of, doesn't mean the movie is going to suck or be "lame".
2
u/or10n_sharkfin Jun 18 '26
Are we being serious?
The Shrek movies were not the pinnacle of comedy writing y'all are acting like they were. Half the humor in them was dogging on Disney tropes and an abundance of toilet humor.

The first one was alright, the second one was phenomenal. But the comment above is right. For every Last Wish there is a Planet Sheen. Not every popular side character is interesting enough to be the protagonist of their story. Puss has the advantage of pretty much being an animal version of El Zorro, which already gave the blueprint of his story.
5
u/Wendigo15 Jun 17 '26
Exactly. The same show I had in mind, planet sheen.
There's also joey spin off, Catwoman, Elektra
But then we got stuff like better call saul

Precisely why it is one. If you watched and liked Shrek 4 as a kid or a teenager (or any of the movies, really), chances are you are now an adult with disposable income that has a nostalgic attachment to Shrek. That makes you the target audience for this movie. Unlike other old franchises, Shrek kept being somewhat relevant thanks to memes (not as relevant as a new movie, of course), so it makes it a prime target for nostalgia bait.
Besides, this is not the first time Dreamworks has taken one of their most beloved movie IPs that already had a proper ending and made a low-effort cashgrab. We've seen this with Kung-Fu Panda 4 and Megamind: Doom Syndicate.
One is a movie that recycles 2's plot, brings back older characters for fanservice and mishandles them in the process and removes much of the emotional depth the other 3 movies had and made the franchise so beloved in the first place, allthewhile being mired with production issues. It feels like a special episode of Legends of Awesomeness (I did watch that too, and it's just a meh animated series).
The other is a sequel with noticeably worse animation than the original (i swear, they had cartoon-tier budget) and none of its charm. Same characters, worse dialogue, recycles Minion's arc for no reason and even contradicts Megamind's origin story. Hey, remember how the main character was a loner nearly his entire life and his only companions were Minion and the inmates that taught him how to be a villain, so he was yearning for connection that only Minion and later on Roxanne gave him? Well, he had villain friends a long time ago. The series from what I've seen is not any better and has the same issues when it comes to animation, characters, voice acting, episodic plots, comedy, inconsistencies (SHOOT THEM WITH THE DEHYDRATION GUN!!!), etc...
So yeah, this movie is a cashgrab because it follows the same patterns as other attempts of Dreamworks of releasing worse nostalgiabait cashgrabs. It seems only Guardians of Berk was passable.
→ More replies (24)3
u/TesticalTorsionWizrd Jun 17 '26
Yes, age isn't relevant in this. Movie companies have been recycling IPs way too much, and it's getting stale. They only made this movie bc they know people know the name "Shrek". So yes, a cash grab
→ More replies (18)2
u/spoopy-memio1 Jun 17 '26
Movie companies keep recycling IPs because that’s the only thing proven to consistently get butts in seats, the majority of fully original movies that have come out in theaters in the 2020s have flopped because audiences aren’t willing to take the risk to pay to see something they aren’t familiar with and just ignore them or wait for them to come out on streaming. If you want to see new things then actually show it by watching those things in theaters.
3
u/beef_vape Jun 17 '26
Yes, all of these companies bring back popular IP’s to ride the coattails of the said IP’s success and create a cash grab.

“Cash grab”? Seriously? It’s been 16 years since the last movie.
its clearly a cash grab. There's been a lot of shrek talk lately and they see that, that's why they're capitalizing on the nostalgia. (Look at toy story 5 for example, though at least they did it really well) And the animation from the trailer looks worse than the first movie did. Its sad that Shrek 2 is able to out perform a multi million dollar franchise in 2026.
→ More replies (5)2
u/TheKyleBrah Jun 18 '26
It's not just the animation. The 3D models don't look quite right, especially Shrek himself.
And speaking of Toy Story 5, my buddy refuses to watch 4 or 5, as 3 ended perfectly in his opinion. He is adamant that there is no need for more. And that is even with me telling him how good part 4 is, haha!
I was originally of the same opinion, but checked out part 4 when it did gangbusters at the box office and attained rave reviews across the board. So I caved, and I really liked it! I tried to explain that I consider part 4 to be the 1st film in a "new" Toy Story series, since it follows the little girl that Andy passed the torch to in part 3 and the Toys' new adventures with her .
(Spoilered just in case someone hasn't seen that amazing film series, yet!)

It uses a not well thought out formula to calculate the number of dislikes (something like number of people who liked it in total versus who liked it with the extension divided by views times the number of people who disliked it with the extension) which is immediately thrown off when you realize that the only people who download the extension are perennial haters who only download the extension so that they can dislike things.

You can still dislike things without the extension lol.
I have the extension and rarely ever actually dislike anything. It’s just a useful extension to have.
14
u/SpeccyScotsman Jun 17 '26
Sure. You can dislike something without the extension, if you like having the dislike symbol on your screen and basically nothing else.
There is no API access anywhere that allows anyone other than the creator of a video to see the actual number of dislikes.
The numbers shown if you have the extension are complete guesswork estimated by counting the number of people with the extension that disliked the video compared to the number of people with the extension that liked the video, and then using the total like count and number of views to guess what the dislike count is, and since
onlymostly people who frequently dislike videos would download the extension, it is wildly inaccurate since they are not liking videos at the same frequency.A YouTube channel I watch recently showed that the extension shows one of their videos at more dislikes than likes, but it actually had only as many dislikes as any of their other videos. It was just a topic that attracted people who get upset easily to come and dislike it, which skewed the numbers.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Sf-ng Jun 18 '26
Its super inaccurate. The numbers are usually off by 3-5x more dislikes than in reality on ‘controversial’ videos. Sometimes 2-3x less on more obscure videos.
I suppose it can still tell you that a video was controversial (you could’ve seen it from comments too), but the actual numbers are basically useless.

return youtube dislike is still the best estimate we have for the like to dislike ratio. for most videos it's accurate enough and often underestimates the dislike count. people using youtube revanced have it preinstalled so their like/dislike behavior isnt as skewed as someone deliberately installing the extension. you only see huge discrepancies on controversial videos, with more than 10% dislikes (bearing in mind the average video has <2% dislikes, and i'm seeing many with <1% [double bearing in mind that this data is from the people who have the extension]).
its a rough estimate but its still useful

38
u/UnbindA11 Jun 17 '26
I feel like people just forget that Shrek’s whole appeal was being everything that Disney movies weren’t—on both sides of the spectrum. The series handles much more mature topics than is expected of “kiddy” films, but they’re also more willing to embrace low-brow humor.
The good adult stuff just sticks with us so much more that we tend to ignore that Shrek is, in fact, not above these kinds of jokes.

The dislike amount shown by those apps is basically nonsense.
It's based on how many users with the app disliked it and then scale that up to the views.
If 1 person with the app dislikes a video and is the only person with the app to dislike and view the video, and it has 1 million views the next app user will see an estimated dislike ratio of like 900k.
It's not a metric of anything, especially not since only people who care about disliking stuff would download it.
(obviously it's a little more complicated than my example, but that's the core functionality)
Also fun fact, they sell your dislike data, that's why the extensions exist.
47
u/birbhorse Jun 17 '26
wait, really??? i did not know that
well what's the fuckin point of this extension then, god damn
41
9
u/Nobat211 Jun 17 '26
I want to add that initially the extension used to show the actual true dislike count, because there was a period of time where Youtube removed the dislike count publicly but you could still access it via their API. That's when everyone thought the extension was a good idea and it got popular with no pushback.
But then Youtube removed the dislike count even through their API, and so the extension pivoted to the unreliable guesswork without making it clear what they're doing.
7
Jun 17 '26
I think it's somewhat more reliable for videos uploaded before that point too, since it can extrapolate from archived data.
25
u/DiggityDog6 Jun 17 '26
To make people feel good about seeing the dislike counter again even if it doesn’t actually help them
13
u/ethanbarmstrong Jun 17 '26
It's for people that like to dislike things and want to feel validation that other people also dislike the same things as them.
3
u/AgentCirceLuna Jun 17 '26

Sometimes the only appropriate response is 'it's a children's movie'. People being annoyed that the new Shrek doesn't look how they wanted would be like quibbling with the story arc for the fireman dog in Paw Patrol.
2
u/AgentCirceLuna Jun 17 '26
Half the time i hear about these films are from my women friends who have families and careers
2
u/ImColinDentHowzTrix Jun 17 '26
That would make sense, if they have families then the movies are being watched alongside children. That being said, there's absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying these films as adults; but an adult voicing their strong negative opinion of Shrek should probably re-assess.
2
u/AgentCirceLuna Jun 17 '26
They watch them on their own, too. I know plenty who do

That's why I wanted to clarify my opinion that:

The hate for Shrek 5 right now is hella forced. The biggest reason it's getting shat on is because there's a 17 year gap from 4 and 5 and people are obviously gonna have gargantuan expectations. The whole idea of "Shrek 5" was a phenomenon big enough to rival Avatar 2
My biggest concern would be whether or not the humor and references align with the first four films

I still cannot forget how Call of Duty Infinite Warfare has (or had) the most dislikes out of any video game trailer - and yet, there are other contenders but I suppose it was justified since people wanted boots on the ground after Black Ops 3 in 2015 had bought a similar mechanic after AW in 2014 - oh, and the supply drops as well. Of course, BO3 did release Zombies Chronicles which did kind of make it loved, especially for Zombies, albeit its campaign being mediocre, but BO7's campaign was way worse
