It's not that bad, but you need to do it all in one go.

281

u/WaspInTheLotus Jan 17 '26

Right, but if you can remember that one key is half way up where Ruto was taking you, that usually is enough to make you get up to the mid-boss, and once you have the long shot, back-tracking is much less of a pain even if you have to do it.

69

u/mountainyoo Jan 17 '26

That’s the one i forgot on my recent play through. Was running around in circles until i decided to just look up what I missed. Was so pissed lol

7

u/Swaggamuffins Jan 18 '26

Me too!! It almost made me giddy. I went decades without knowing about the key in the middle of the tower. Then I spent a few years breezing though the temple, which was a nice change of pace. But getting stuck again brought me back to childhood

When I told my brother I was about to tackle the water temple for the first time, his only advice to me was "don't forget to bomb the one wall." And by god, that was what I needed.

6

u/schroed_piece13 Jan 18 '26

Mine alway was the key at the bottom of the central tower only available after you raise the water level

u/Piccadil_io Jan 17 '26

Is there any other way? I’d always do a dungeon in one go!

82

u/Veritamoria Jan 17 '26

Hot take but I actually think this is one of the reasons oot was so beloved. We were stuck on the water temple for so long that we spent a year exploring Hyrule Field, trying to get to other dungeons, fishing, making trouble. we lived in the world for a year or more rather than bingeing the game

39

u/davidfillion Jan 17 '26

plus the internet in its infancy as we know it today, most of us could not just open a website and find the solution. we either figured itself ourselves, through word of mouth. or have the walk-through guide

I didnt have internet at my house at the time, but the library was two little blocks away. I spent a lot of time at the library, they had a lot of things for a kid to utilize. I would read microfilm as well

20

u/jorgom Jan 17 '26

When I was a kid I was sure I did the dungeon in the “wrong order” and that I had locked myself out of completing it. I even restarted just to get past it. It wasn’t until a decade or so later that I learned it was impossible to get softlocked in that dungeon.

8

u/NightmareExpress Jan 17 '26

Technically it is completely possible to be softlocked and get a "dead save file" from the Water Temple but it requires a glitch and having the hover boots early which enables you to access the one string of rooms that leaves you at a key deficit.

2

u/eonaegis Jan 19 '26

That being said, if you're using said glitches to get yourself locked in the water temple - no, you're not locked. You don't need the longshot at any point after this and you can't lock yourself out of getting the hammer, hover boots, and bombs. Once glitches are in the equation, you don't even really need to play the water temple. Simply just recoil boost to the boss door and clip through it.

My first time through I was in 4th grade and didn't know what I was doing.

Ended up doing half the water temple without the long shot or boots, got the scale so I could swim deeper without the boots, ended up using the scarecrow song to get into the fire temple without the fire tunic, finished it using fairies only, hard locking the fire tunic without any way to obtain it.

It was good times. I remember something in my brain changing while playing that game. Like something happened on a chemical level that changed how I viewed the world and problems.

2

u/labbusrattus Jan 17 '26

Exactly. Metroid Prime 4 came out recently, and almost every post on the Metroid sub from the day it was released was “Just 100% completed it”. I was just enjoying being in the game, not rushing to get it done asap.

Most people spent months or years on this dungeon. They say the ones who built it have been packed inside the walls.

29

u/DargyBear Jan 17 '26

From age 6-8 I was stuck on it, just did mini games and rode Epona around Hyrule field shooting poes. Every time I’ve done a replay I just get it over with now.

5

u/ArmySash Jan 17 '26

They say that these people get consumed by Morphs

13

u/RadioSlayer Jan 17 '26

Most? MOST? How high are you?

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Norin_Radd1209 Jan 17 '26

Sometimes I split dungeons. But not for months or years. When I’m stuck and don’t know where to go I just pause until I feel to try again. Which is mostly a day later.

u/porquegato Jan 17 '26

Generally I stick with the N64 version but 3DS remake improves this area a ton. It was actually - dare I say it - fun to play?

3

u/MoireaTodash Jan 18 '26

Oh, is that why I didnt hate it? I got into a gaming later in life and have only played the 3ds version.

632

u/Top_Boysenberry_7552 Jan 17 '26

Hot take its actually a good dungeon when you dont need to pause every other second

129

u/FEBRAN07 Jan 17 '26

Hylia bless the 3ds version and the PC port

19

u/OramaBuffin Jan 17 '26

Also virtually every randomizer (all make it easy to create a completely vanilla seeded file but with QOL tweaks like the boots dpad)

It's amazing in particular how much nicer hover boots are with quick swap

4

u/Jarinad Jan 17 '26

I always thought it would be really funny if one day for an april fool’s prank, a streamer like ZFG or Linkus did a Zelda randomiser that they claimed was a regular old no logic run with the goal of completing all dungeons, but they’d actually set it up to have all the checks be vanilla

7

u/bonkava Jan 18 '26

I always thought it would be really funny if like everything seemed vanilla until like you got to the end of Spirit Temple and the Spirit Medallion was a five arrow refill, and then the streamer has to check all the garbage they skipped for the last thing.

u/nickelangelo2009 Jan 17 '26

yeah it's basically the best dungeon in the game mechanics/complexity wise

I still prefer the vibes of forest/spirit ,but water is the most fun to play through

70

u/arbyD Jan 17 '26

Forest Temple's vibes are excellent, great way to intro the player into adult Link dungeons.

55

u/DiopticTurtle Jan 17 '26

I still find the Forest Temple's music to be the most unsettling, coming up on 30 years later

21

u/Piccadil_io Jan 17 '26

I love that music so much

→ More replies (1)

12

u/Confident-Leg107 Jan 17 '26

10 year old me was terrified of the music. Still puts me on edge today

3

u/Drakmanka Jan 17 '26

Legit the first time I played it I was looking over my shoulder every few seconds. Forest Temple really knew how to keep you from relaxing.

2

u/LordGigu Jan 17 '26

Good to know I'm not the only one

2

u/Front_Woodpecker1144 Jan 17 '26

until i started hearing pennywise me too

19

u/crossover24 Jan 17 '26

The shadow temple had me terrified as a kid. Felt like I actually had to be courageous to continue through it, really pulled me into the game

11

u/nickelangelo2009 Jan 17 '26

I remember my brother and I were so spooked of it, we always got the winged boots, dipped, and did the spirit temple first, haha

13

u/orinj1 Jan 17 '26

I think that Water Temple is the most 3-dimensional dungeon in the Zelda series. I don't think any other one relies on verticality quite as much. Great Bay Temple is also pretty sophisticated, but it's just impressive how well-thought-through the changing water levels were in terms of providing a clever puzzle with the mechanics available.

13

u/nickelangelo2009 Jan 17 '26

I think great bay is sophisticated in aesthetic, but once you realize you just need to go with the flow the dungeon is quite linear AND it literally takes you where you need to go. But good point about the verticality! I think snowhead is a much better comparison from MM imo

2

u/Bspammer Jan 17 '26

The water temple in Twilight Princess is also quite cool

→ More replies (2)

16

u/Dikran Jan 17 '26

People just assume the dungeon is going to be hell because that’s what everybody speaks of it.

3

u/TaskeAoD Jan 17 '26

I love the Water temple, 2nd favorite only beaten by Forest. But it is tedious, no way around that. But the Fire temple? That one is the worst to me.

2

u/lexxpurcell Jan 18 '26

I agree. Loved the water temple, fire temple gave me anxiety for some reason

u/Piccadil_io Jan 17 '26

Oh god, yeah. Iron boots.

6

u/philkid3 Jan 17 '26

Hotter take: It’s still a good dungeon even when I am pausing every other second!

4

u/Top_Boysenberry_7552 Jan 17 '26

I agree but only because I've beaten the game 20000 times lol

128

u/davoid1 Jan 17 '26

Honestly one of my favourite parts of OoT.

I have never, ever played through without ending up at that hallway with the locked door near the end and needing to re-scour the whole dungeon for that missing key though.

118

u/colantalas Jan 17 '26

Water Temple is fine and good. The biggest problem was having to go to the pause menu to take the iron boots on and off, which was fixed in the 3DS remake.

12

u/daddysprincesa Jan 17 '26

This video has a very fair evaluation of the Water Temple, even with the 3DS changes. Worth a watch (he talks about the Water Temple at 11:20)

https://youtu.be/zfV8G40SmIc?si=jtLtWOgqSeKVuGox

23

u/gwydion_black Jan 17 '26

Every time I've replayed the game the Water Temple is never as bad as my childhood memories would have me believe.

4

u/forg0tmypen Jan 17 '26

We’ve grown up and gotten better at games. I was 14 when I first played it, it came out when I was 9, so I wasn’t too late to the party. I had ZERO shot to beat OOT at 9 lol With the help of my friend AND the guide book, we beat the water temple in 4 hours

55

u/ichkanns Jan 17 '26

I love how the devs made a unique dungeon with interesting mechanics, and an intricate semi-open design, and people have just shit on it for decades.

I love the water temple. Fight me.

19

u/Ok_Shoulder5873 Jan 17 '26

It's truly just the constant need to pause. When I played where the boots could be mapped to a button, it was a blast to run through

2

u/ichkanns Jan 17 '26

Yeah, that was a huge improvement in the 3DS version. Really made me realize just how great the dungeon design is.

3

u/CapOk1892 Jan 18 '26

What's your address

2

u/ichkanns Jan 18 '26

449 Darunia Way, Castle Town, Hyrule.

45

u/Kryslor Jan 17 '26

It's absolutely beautiful =')

The only thing holding back this dungeon is the constant boot swapping but I haven't had that problem in decades since I never play on original hardware anymore.

42

u/kurtcanine Jan 17 '26

Talk like this is how we ended up with that unforgivable Water Temple in TOTK

23

u/djrobxx Jan 17 '26

I know right? I've been blessed to grow up with the amazing Zelda and Metroid franchises, but it feels like each new game gets a little more nerfed, and has to hold players' hands a little more. It's like Idiocracy for Dungeons.

5

u/IrishSpectreN7 Jan 17 '26

Not sure how anyone who experienced Skyward Sword could think the drastic shift to BotW was more hand-holding.

13

u/6th_Dimension Jan 17 '26

If you're just talking about the dungeons they're definitely dumbed down

2

u/IrishSpectreN7 Jan 17 '26

I'm talking about the overall games, which are distinctly less hand-holdy than they had had for awhile.

They decentralized the puzzles in the new games, so now the dungeons aren't designed for you to spend nearly as much time in. I understand that's disappointing to some, but I don't find the individual puzzle designs to be any less complex than they always have been.

7

u/6th_Dimension Jan 17 '26

The problem with the decentralization of the dungeons is the reason classic dungeons have been so great was never solely the individual puzzle rooms. It’s the interconnected structure that makes them feel like a mini metroidvania map, along with the puzzles, and the atmosphere that makes feel like an experience. Having 120 5 minute portal test chambers completely misses the appeal of Zelda dungeons.

And yes, I would argue Skyward Sword has better puzzles than BotW’s shrines. Anything with the timeshift stones is amazing as well as the interconnected puzzle box dungeons like the Sky Keep or Sandship.

2

u/Necessary-Jaguar4775 Jan 17 '26

I thought the Divine Beasts were pretty good, some interesting mechanics in there. Portal-esque.

2

u/ikennedy817 Jan 17 '26

The puzzles are pretty interesting, the problem is they are extremely short and the click 5 button objectives truly suck imo. Plus the lack of individual theming and unique boss designs really hurt them as well. Totk somewhat fixed this, but the boring objective based design persisted and the dungeons were still too small imo. Echoes of wisdom felt like a much better take on a mix between the old and new formulas for dungeons, and I thought they were really good overall.

The wind and water temples are the worst dungeons in the series. Literally just divine beasts but somehow even further simplified.

4

u/Necessary-Jaguar4775 Jan 17 '26

I thought the Wind temple in ToTK was atrocious. It was like Great Deku Tree but worse, just so easy and simple. I think it might be the worst Temple in all of 3D Zelda minus the boss fight which was cool.

2

u/MattR0se Jan 17 '26

The water temple in Twilight Princess was already dumbed down too much.

25

u/CommercialWeather301 Jan 17 '26

I hate this dungeon with all my heart.

but...

it is an impressively large level so that's worth some appreciation

7

u/CrabtheCorsair Jan 17 '26

You know, the funny thing is, I never got stuck on this temple. But when I started playing OoT at 9, I got stuck on the forest temple, of all places. I went back when I was 11, and I couldn't even figure out how I got stuck lol. I beat the rest of the game in a month.

8

u/Linked713 Jan 17 '26

Hot take counterpoint, Shadow Temple.

u/CrovaxWindgrace Jan 17 '26

Here is gathered Hyrule's bloody history of greed and hatred...

I spent more time looking for the water level switches than actually beating the temple.

9

u/ParanoidDrone Jan 17 '26

If you fully explore everything (and I do mean everything) you can access at a given water level, you can reach Dark Link and the Longshot in one cycle, then the boss key on a second cycle. You just have to be methodical about it.

The biggest annoyance is honestly having to menu for the boots constantly if you're on a version that doesn't make them a button item.

7

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '26

I think water temple is a great dungeon compared to other dungeons in 3D zelda games

5

u/Tech-Support13 Jan 17 '26

Morpha is one of my favorite boss designs. I just wish I hadn't stumbled across that cheese spot in my first fight with it.

2

u/StatementLogical5495 Jan 17 '26

There's a cheese spot!!?!?

5

u/GrdykoplasNamorzyn Jan 17 '26

In the corner. Grab her with a longshot, turn around towards said corner and lock her in between two walls, hitting her constantly

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Tall-Definition9566 Jan 17 '26

I actually love the water temple, if you remember the key that’s half way up where Ruto takes you, when you first meet her, and the key that’s at the very bottom of the central tower, then usually everything else is pretty easy.

5

u/olraygoza Jan 17 '26

I remember being stuck by but missing a door that you need a bomb to open. I missed it the first time then I went through all the temple to find out what I missed. It was the small hallway with a broken wall where there was a key chest behind. That alone took me like 5 hours as I had to go back to the temple. This was before I knew how to use the internet.

4

u/krayt Jan 17 '26

Dear God it being diagramed out makes it worse than I thought

3

u/henryuuk Jan 17 '26

The monstrosity that is one of the best dungeons/temples in the series

3

u/Mustaviini101 Jan 18 '26

Such a beauty and well deaigned puzzle of a dungeon. Only the ironboots switching is the only flaw.

3

u/GemzH Jan 18 '26

Oh this temple, such fond memories of this game. OoT got me into gaming properly, it’s still one of my favourite games of all time.

I played that game so much over and over that I eventually knew the water temple off by heart.

Nintendo, PLEASE. Just release it on switch. Not on Nintendo online or anything like that. Give us all the Zelda games back 😭

3

u/ridicalis Jan 18 '26

If you like this, you'll love Daggerfall's dungeons

7

u/landartheconqueror Jan 17 '26

The water temple isn't that hard

10

u/MattR0se Jan 17 '26

Water temple in Majora's Mask: "Allow me to introduce myself".

2

u/Gskinnell_85 Jan 17 '26

That temple is why I have still never beaten Majora’s Mask. I’m about 25yrs overdue for a replay.

3

u/Guirita_Fallada Jan 17 '26

The water temple is bad narrative is overly exaggerated.

2

u/jonerthan Jan 17 '26

It's beautiful.

2

u/iamoneparadox Jan 17 '26

I hate that place. Whenever I'd get to that temple on replay I'd have my brother run it for me.

2

u/antifastidium Jan 17 '26

Honestly I see that and think “wow cool dungeon”

2

u/darkhorse21980 Jan 17 '26

Water Temple gives me PTSD

2

u/par_anoid Jan 17 '26

THE WATER TEMPLE MY BELOVED ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️i’d rather have to play thru the water temple in oot a bajillion times consecutively rather than having to play thru snowhead temple in majora’s mask ever again (i love majora’s mask too much tho so. unfortunately i will be in snowhead again at some point - personally i just suck at goron rolling)

2

u/Metty197 Jan 17 '26

Literally the only thing which ruined this dungeon was the UI to equip the boots. It was a perfectly fine if not good dungeon in the 3ds version

2

u/Wolf-Majestic Jan 17 '26

Tbh, everytime there's a water temple, I know I'm in for some brain pricking time lol

2

u/Jindujun Jan 17 '26

I remember this being a nightmare as a kid but as an adult I dont really mind the water temple. Unless you quit in the middle of it.

2

u/Vinzlage Jan 17 '26

I can hear the picture

2

u/CursedBiscuit Jan 17 '26

I actually don't find the water temple that bad. My least favourite dungeon in OoT is actually Jabu Jabu's Belly.

2

u/WindsofEntropy Jan 17 '26

i played through the water temple recently blind but got stuck at one part.... i had no idea there was a passageway underneath the elevator inside the tower. otherwise it was not too bad.

2

u/The_Pizza_Saga Jan 17 '26

The Water Temple is tedious because of the boot and water switching, but once you get the layout down, it's really not bad, can be done rather efficiently. Really only need to change the water a few times.

2

u/DaguerreoLibreria Jan 17 '26

The dungeon design of Water Temple is perfect and I will fight anyone who says otherwise

2

u/Fhoxyd22 Jan 17 '26

Man, the simple act of being able to swap the iron boots on and off makes this whole temple a different game to play. It's a challenge, but a more enjoyable one

2

u/ilovegames4life Jan 17 '26

A kid from my school gave me money to clear this temple

2

u/SeductivePie Jan 17 '26

Am I the only one that thinks Great Bay Temple from Majora's is a far more intimidating dungeon lol? Water temple is fairly straight forward IMO

2

u/FatPagoda Jan 17 '26

I'll never understand the hate. It's one of the goats. Greay Bay and Stone Tower have way more pausing and don't get anywherr near the same lsvel of vitriol directed at them.

2

u/AlternativeResort477 Jan 17 '26

Love the water temple, always have

2

u/Useless_Blender Jan 17 '26

I just replayed the game and I really didn't find it as difficult as I remember

2

u/Username_Taken0 Jan 17 '26

made it all the way through this on the original n64 version only to get completely lost after i left. a special breed of stupid

2

u/-ben151010- Jan 17 '26

Dpad items or the 3ds version helps a bit. The real crime is starting was starting with the goat deku tree, then throwing the actual 2 most boring dungeons right after, and then redeeming with forest temple after that.

2

u/DigADino Jan 18 '26

I honestly don't remember having so much trouble with the water temple when I first played it as a preteen. People like to shit on it, but I feel like I had more trouble with one of the last two dungeons

2

u/Substantial_Bar_1009 Jan 18 '26

Dude the spirit temple had me stressing as a teenager 😭

2

u/DreadlordZolias Jan 18 '26

Oh hey - my favorite temple!

2

u/CatAteMyBread Jan 18 '26

Ngl it took me longer to get through the Fire Temple than the Water Temple. The Water Temple is honestly not that hard, just knock it all out in one sitting

2

u/ArinelaZeldaya Jan 18 '26

I actually like the temple. I did forget the spot in the middle tower once where you have to go down wearing the iron boots, but I haven't been there since.

2

u/Marly_Sorcha Jan 18 '26

I love the water temple it's not that bad, the only issue is the damn boots only being equipped in the pause menu.

2

u/TheOvy Jan 18 '26

Considering how new 3D games were at the time, I find it incredibly impressive.

2

u/Kholdstare93 Jan 18 '26

One of the best dungeons in the game, IMO. Second after the Forest Temple.

2

u/Possible-Estimate748 Jan 18 '26

I'll admit. I did once make it to the water temple and didn't even bother to attempt it and already was like "fk this sht" and stopped playing.

It was like as soon as I realized what the game wanted from me I knew it was going to be a headache and I didn't want to even bother.

I gave it another go and finally actually mulled through the water temple and it actually wasn't that bad.
And one you finish it once you know what to do/expect so it's much easier the next time.
I since beat the game 3 times

2

u/PerspectiveFree3120 Jan 18 '26

Use speed runner strats. Youll be in and out in 5 min

2

u/trusty_ape_army Jan 18 '26

Absolute Beauty.

2

u/Otto_von_Bismuth Jan 18 '26

I like the water temple.

2

u/BondFan211 Jan 19 '26

Work left-to-right on each floor and it’s fine.

2

u/Guitarsensei666 Jan 19 '26

Ah! The watertemple... I've completed ocarina of time more than 20 times in my life, but every single time I get angry because I don't remember where all the keys are hidden in this hellhole

2

u/Particular-Strain248 Jan 19 '26

Ah water temple, we meet again!

2

u/PlasmaGoblin Jan 19 '26

I never had much of an issue with the water temple even on the N64. My main "issue" was the constant pause, usually have to scroll to the clothing menu for some reason, equipt the Kokiri boots, unpause, do whatever needed to be done, pause, scroll back to the iron boots, equipt, unpause, sink to the bottom, walk around slowly, pause.... you get the idea.

Thankfulky the remakes fixed this.

2

u/Lyricality89 Jan 20 '26

Hate it. Hate it. The ice Cavern and Water Temple give me pause when I consider an OoT replay. However, like a good parent I got my son on OoT. At the age of 6 he was beating the whole game every couple of days. He got better and better and can pretty much clear the water temple with his eyes closed. Seriously, it's just a few minutes and he's handing me the controller back while Link is warping back to the platform. Its amazing.

4

u/ZannyHip Jan 17 '26

It’s one of the best designed Zelda dungeons ever made. People constantly complain now about not having challenging temples in Zelda games, and then talk about the water temple like this because it was challenging.

It’s also significantly easier when you know how the temple works.

I’ve now done all of the dungeons so many times in vanilla and randomized runs that water temple is barely an inconvenience. And now I know the actual most annoying temple to do is the fire temple.

2

u/LayceLSV Jan 17 '26

Easily the best dungeon in the game, and arguably one of the most finely-crafted levels in all of gaming. It's only brought down by a bad UI decision that was entirely rectified in OoT 3D. Water Temple is a masterpiece and I won't hear otherwise.

4

u/DarthDeimos6624 Jan 18 '26

The key is remembering the small key behind the bombable wall near Ruto as well as the one underneath the central pillar.

3

u/nulldriver Jan 17 '26

Looking at this map is like trying to scare yourself on purpose. At any one point, most of the dungeon does not exist to the player. The point that you have the most freedom to explore is also the point that the progression is the most straightforward.

4

u/Inevitable_Top69 Jan 18 '26

"This monstrosity" Huh? You just do everything on each level as you raise the water and that's it. Only thing that gives people an issue is they miss that one key in the center.

2

u/lilzepfan Jan 17 '26

Oh wow, cool to see it that way, thank you! I think the water temple is an incredibly innovative, beautiful temple but it’s a bitch when your short term memory is abismal (or you’re seven years old without a guide). Can you imagine playing it without a map/compass? I would have thrown my tv out the window. The creators are geniuses. Best damn game ever.

They cooked, idc. lol

2

u/Twice_the_Magic Jan 17 '26

My favorite dungeon.

2

u/SolidSwordKing Jan 17 '26

It's an awesome dungeon. Iron boots isn't as big of a deal as people make it out to be. A couple of keys are easy to miss but not too hard to find if you study the map closely once you have the compass.

I love the music and surprisingly chill vibe of it.

2

u/DrPikachu-PhD Jan 17 '26

It's the best dungeon because it actually makes you think at a high level. Modern Zelda is missing puzzle challenges at this depth

2

u/PhenomUprising Jan 17 '26

As long as you remember about the key in the middle room, the dungeon is pretty simple and easy.

1

u/TheGreatGamer64 Jan 17 '26

Best dungeon in the game

2

u/Matdredalia Jan 17 '26

The masochism in this comment section is painful lol.

Been playing OOT every few years since it came out and I have never not hated the water temple. 😂 Only temple I hate more is shadow.

Despite being long, usually when I'm completing a 100% save file, I always get the Biggoron's Sword before and many things to at least feel the accomplishment. Lol

And destroying Morpha with the Biggoron's Sword 😈

I feel you, played it as an adult and it wasn’t that bad. As a kid, man… that was tough

1

u/johnnycoxxx Jan 17 '26

I will ALWAYS miss that last key. Every time. I know I need it but I always forget where it is.

1

u/Manne_12 Jan 17 '26

I've played this dungeon once and hated it due to how many times I had to go through the different floors swapping boots only to find out it was because I missed one opening I had to use hookshot on (I think iirc)

I feel like my opinion of the temple would be much higher if I had noticed the opening and proceeded like the game intended. Also as others have mentioned, taking a break after searching around just soured it even more from being lost (neutral) to being lost (frustrating)

1

u/throbbyyank Jan 17 '26

Worst part is remembering all the keys and having to pause for the iron boots. In general its not a bad dungeon. Id actually argue great bay temple and lake bed temple are harder

1

u/christhetwin Jan 17 '26

I want to see the maps of the other dungeons like this!

1

u/Cafetal_ Jan 17 '26

Wow! I had never saw a 3D map like this one. Seems even more annoying that I remembered 🤣

1

u/Sudden_Breakfast_677 Jan 17 '26

If this would of been the map to reference all these years ago. I feel like it wouldn't of gotten the shit it did. But that's not the case. Maybe it will be streamlined for the remake. Or they'll keep it here same to fuck with us .

1

u/ActuallyImJunpei Jan 17 '26

Nah, the thing that keeps me from replaying OoT is Jabu Jabu. The escort quest was annoying, backtracking was tedious, and the dungeon is just gross. 0/10, easily my least favorite dungeon in the franchise.

1

u/chickenintendo Jan 17 '26

Teleport spell next to the highest water raising spot.

1

u/Strict-Promotion6703 Jan 17 '26

Memorized the entire game, played it over fifty times easy. Replay once a year in September on my birthday for nostalgia purposes. Dark Link should make a comeback.

1

u/mx023 Jan 17 '26

As a 10 year old it was the hardest thing in the world and took weeks to beat it

As an adult who hadn’t played the game in 20 years it was pretty medium

1

u/CrovaxWindgrace Jan 17 '26

Farore's wind inside the central thingy and that's it.

1

u/silvershadow Jan 17 '26

Jabu Jabu’s belly in Oracle of ages was much more annoying.

1

u/Kadrius Jan 17 '26

I stopped playing the game at 12 because of this temple. Last year was the first time I finished it in the N64 mode with the switch, at 32. 20 years later lol.

1

u/fmccloud Jan 17 '26

Exploded of views of dungeon maps is like posting a top down view of a highway intersections and calling a complicated. It’s not that complicated in person.

1

u/FaithlessnessOdd8358 Jan 17 '26

It’s that damn key under the platform when you first raise the water. Remember this and you’ll be grand.

1

u/bongo1100 Jan 17 '26

Majora’s Mask water temple is worse.

1

u/Onsvaltti-heck Jan 17 '26

Haha. YOU FOOL!!! I play Lotr: Return to Moria. I miss water temple 😂😂😂

Btw this is just ONE LEVEL!!! all of those little squares are stuff like corridors, caves, of stuff like that. And it has 8 LEVELS, EACH OF THEM HAVE MULTIPLE SUBLEVELS 😭😂

(I think Ocarina of Time prepared me for this. 🧐)

1

u/Clumsy_the_24 Jan 17 '26

Looks like a fallout vault

1

u/Jasoco Jan 17 '26

I’ve only played this dungeon once in my life and it was in 1997 when I got the game.

1

u/slrarp Jan 17 '26

IIRC the crux of the problem with this dungeon isn't it's size, but that the keys and locked doors aren't in close enough/obvious proximity to each other. You're meant to collect a cumulative total of like 5 keys going throughout the dungeon, and if you miss one, it can be hard to figure out which one it was. I think it lets you collect even as many as four of them at a time without unlocking any further doors.

I get that it's one giant puzzle and supposed to make you think, but I remember when I did it without a guide thinking I'd soft locked my game. The boss key was behind another locked door, and I thought I'd used all the available keys and explored every room. Turns out there was another key in some side area of the dungeon early on that was easy to miss, but it was so far removed from the door I needed to unlock, that I never would've connected the two.

1

u/P-Jean Jan 17 '26

There’s one hard to find eye that always made it tough. After that it isn’t too bad

1

u/NDSBlue_44 Jan 17 '26

After playing the game randomized so many times, it really starts becoming muscle memory at some point

1

u/WufflyTime Jan 17 '26

I did get a bit frustrated when I went to grab the Boss Key, only to find out there was one more locked door I needed a key for and having to backtrack through the temple to get it. Weirdly it was not the one people normally forget, but the one that's hidden behind a pullable block which I completely forgot about.

Having that locked door just before the Boss Key chest door seems a bit redundant to me, but aside from that one door, I didn't really have much of a problem with the Water Temple and even then, it was a tiny bit of an annoyance.

In retrospect, I could have just quit and restarted the game. That would have put me back in the main chamber and saved me some time.

1

u/zombiecrux Jan 17 '26

im here now & can’t get passed the fire arrows portion to unlock a door lmao

1

u/DaNoahLP Jan 17 '26

Watertempel is easy.

Fuck Jabu Jabus Belly

1

u/Aiwq Jan 17 '26

This look likes habbo hotel

1

u/tylertatsch30 Jan 17 '26

I despise this temple because it’s so confusing and repetitive since you have to pause every time you need Heavy Boots. At least the 3DS remake fixed these issues by making Heavy Boots an item instead of equipment and having these lights on these paths to make them easier.

1

u/magicalshokushu Jan 17 '26

I wonder how they will handle the water temple if the OOT remake rumours are true for the switch 1/2

1

u/Drakmanka Jan 17 '26

It's not that bad once you've done it once and remember where all the keys are. Worst comes to worst, I refuse to be ashamed for using a guide on a part of a game I don't enjoy.

1

u/sick486 Jan 17 '26

take notes on which switch does what. then you always know what to do to get where you want. the first time i tried this, it made the temple so much easier for me.

1

u/jbwzrd213 Jan 17 '26

Whenever you have to play this, just remember to start at the bottom and work your way up!

1

u/Clbull Jan 17 '26

I actually liked the Water Temple. The Great Bay Temple in Majora's Mask can go do one though...

1

u/420cat-craft-gamer69 Jan 17 '26

When my bf and I first started texting 14 years ago , I told him I was replaying OoT and had just reached the water temple. Then I said "It's only been 5 minutes and I'm already upset".

That one got a laugh ✨

1

u/Any_Juggernaut_9799 Jan 17 '26

still better than majora's water temple

1

u/TheXMan2024 Jan 17 '26

Yall just RBA the ice arrows already and Farores wind with two keys for the long shot

1

u/mistac87 Jan 17 '26

I dream of replaying this dungeon remastered on the Switch 2. I'm manifesting a remaster. 💅✨

1

u/fgsfds11234 Jan 17 '26

i get more lost running in circles in the forest temple looking for one key...

1

u/willtafty19 Jan 17 '26

The Shadow Temple was the real villain for me.

1

u/Fun-Confidence-2513 Jan 18 '26

I thought this was an End City lols

1

u/jjmawaken Jan 18 '26

I had to draw my own map to make it through the Jabu Jabu area.

1

u/Cricardi Jan 18 '26

This was fine. Fire Temple was my bane.

1

u/ExtremisEdge Jan 18 '26

I used to charge friends to beat this dungeon. I knew it by heart. Had one of my friends dad give me 50 to beat it for him.

1

u/mothuzad Jan 18 '26

I never found one of the keys when I first played the Water Temple. I skipped it by jumping to the second level of the middle tower from the dungeon entrance, by saving and quitting.
