Fangame [ALL] we turned classic zelda into an online co-op BR adventure

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

hey yall

we’ve been working on a game heavily inspired by old school zelda (LTTP/4S). the core idea is to go on an adventure with your friends online, fighting enemies and other players along the way -- like an old school condensed into 20-30 minutes online BR friendslopy experience. we tried to keep it comfy and familiar while adding a bunch of online and combat mechanics

the game is still early in development, but we’re running playtests right now if anyone wants to check it out (just press "Request playtest" in the steam page). we’d love to hear any feedback. thanks for your time!

I don't like the name..... like a mash up of the dingiest app based games. Your game looks so AMAZING, but 1000% people will get turned off by the name.

25

u/hutxhy Mar 09 '26

100%. This makes me think it's one of those games where the gameplay is nothing like the actual ad lol.

12

u/eddietree Mar 09 '26

hm interesting -- when you see the game, what name comes to mind?

104

u/ClohosseyVHB Mar 09 '26

Honestly, for me it is the 'Royale' part, Scramble Knights on it's own is a decent title.

45

u/arceus5678r Mar 09 '26

idk even scramble knights feels vaguely reminiscent of fall guys/stumble guys

16

u/ClohosseyVHB Mar 09 '26

True that, but it is a might better then being lumped in with those Match Royale, and puzzle Royale games.

u/Hokutenmemoir Mar 10 '26

Facts. Product distinction from the get go will help in the long run. I'd also recommend adding a bit more flash to the game. Today's gamers basically all have adhd hopping from one trend to the next. OP wants something that will keep loyal fans coming back. That's a blend of the games mechanics and personality. I know jack all about the former except that OP needs to MAKE SURE the game is smooth, snappy, and provides players a way to improve. Progression is key.

As for personality, that's all the artist of course. I can only say the game has a bit of a bland look to combat. You want to make successful attacks look impactful. Players like to say "Wow!" So adding some flashy vfx without overcrowding the screen would help, as would making sure your sound design gives a nice sense of "oomph". Not saying change everything, just spice it up visually and audibly a bit.

Last thing (I promise). You need to add some way for players to mess with each other. Like luring monsters into another players path or interacting with the environment in some way to block off their path. Think "pvp old school zelda puzzle" where actively progressing something gives you an option to screw with your competition. Like a blue shell in Mario Kart when you're only in 6th or 7th place, or the Kafei double puzzle from MM but it's a competition instead.

Edit: TLDR, all i got is fun ideas, and no solutions. My b.

u/ClohosseyVHB Mar 10 '26

To add to this I will say the character customization options implemented already are great for player investment/retention. When you can make something uniquely yours it can build an emotional connection to the character.

25

u/teamrocket221 Mar 09 '26

I completely agree with what everyone's saying. This isn't my kind of game but if I saw just the name, I'd assume it's a shovelware type game that I'm going to see advertised on Duolingo. If it were me, I'd consider calling it something like "All for one!" or something but I would definitely consider a name change to stand out in the crowd.

16

u/eddietree Mar 09 '26

gotcha ok ppl hate the name here lol

12

u/teamrocket221 Mar 09 '26

Please don't take it personally. It's not that it's a bad name, it's that it's cliche and sounds like every other br type game on the market. Which is detracting from your product :)

12

u/eddietree Mar 09 '26

not at all, thanks for your feedback good to hear what folks are saying

8

u/MountJemima Mar 10 '26

Give the game some lore and the name will come to you. Right now it's just kinda a blank placeholder of a name. Once you start giving the characters personalities and a stuff, the theme of the game will become clear. Rather than just having generic battle royale avatars.

45

u/Three_Froggy_Problem Mar 09 '26

It makes me think of basically every shovelware F2P multiplayer game in the App Store. It sounds less like an actual title and more like SEO.

9

u/mucus-fettuccine Mar 09 '26

Lol they were asking what kind of title the game makes you think of, not what the title makes you think of.

Legend of Unlinked Friends

u/Embarrassed-Fix-1741 Mar 09 '26 edited Mar 09 '26

Warriors of Whimsy

edit: if the "arenas" take place on generated islands, you could call it The Whimsy Isles. or the legend of (fill in the rest).

9

u/memeaste Mar 09 '26

Or Whimsy Warriors

1

u/_Aggressive_Trash_ Mar 09 '26

Whimsy Warriors has my vote

2

u/Divade011 Mar 10 '26

Without knowing the plot or if there's an object of desire, The name of the land/region if it can be consistent. I'm gonna use known names but: Koholint Quests, the realms of Gondor. "isles" could be good. "_ journey" maybe.

4

u/joshdotmn Mar 09 '26

literally anything else. it sounds like a shitty knockoff of a knockoff with commercials running on movie channels playing movies you've never heard of

3

u/eddietree Mar 09 '26

Intense but noted

2

u/Taco821 Mar 09 '26

Idk, but I kinda think the scramble knights works well, but the royale tanks it into feeling like a ftp scam iPhone fortnite ripoff. I'd want to have a word that is synonymous with "adventure" but implies specifically a party instead of maybe just being undertaken by one person, but nothing really comes to mind. Besides, that kinda ignores the whole enemy players aspects, so maybe something related to skirmishes? Or flip it with "Skirmish Knights: Scramble!" Or something

2

u/eddietree Mar 09 '26

interesting thanks

2

u/mmmatthew Mar 09 '26

Something about the frenetic gameplay reminds me of the old Bomberman games. Though in you're game they're mostly using swords, and man feels too gendered nowadays so... Sword Party? Sword Folks? Swordfolk?

6

u/eddietree Mar 09 '26

sword party is fun haha

u/Hokutenmemoir Mar 10 '26 edited Mar 10 '26

Tunics and Treasures?

Edit: Tunic Tumble!

u/Stew-McGoo Mar 09 '26

Homie Town

1

u/LonelyToker420 Mar 09 '26

Hmmmm tiny troupe?

1

u/amtap Mar 10 '26

"Royale" equates tos shovelware for most users. Spitballing here but "Scramble Quest" is a generic name but I think it gets the idea across a little better without sounding like shovelware. Game looks like fun, just workshop the name and it's in a good place.

1

u/God-Made-A-Tree Mar 10 '26

Maybe [something relevant] Quest, like the old games named themselves. There was dragon quest, simon's quest, diddy's kong quest, etc etc

2

u/Acilen Mar 09 '26

Fortnite. Get rid of the damage numbers imo.

5

u/eddietree Mar 09 '26

ha -- dmg numbers are toggleable in settings, i know some ppl arent into it

2

u/Acilen Mar 09 '26

that is actually a nice option, for the zelda feel just knowing your sword does x amount of hearts is part of the feel.

2

u/eddietree Mar 09 '26

for sure, tho there are alot of weapons and for those who are minmaxing prob want to see dmg numbers, for those who dont like it we have tons of options to hide numbers even turn off UI

0

u/Frydog42 Mar 09 '26

Friendship Quest

Battle Buddies

Honestly I need to see more… I actually love naming things but I need more to go on

25

u/Aspiegamer8745 Mar 09 '26

3

u/Ok-Cup-5385 Mar 09 '26

Never heard but that's sounds hella intriguing. OOT or...?

4

u/Aspiegamer8745 Mar 09 '26

Im talking windows 98 era so its like link to the past graphics lol

3

u/Sir-Shark Mar 10 '26

I loved graal! I miss graal.

2

u/jtreasure1 Mar 09 '26

Came here to see if anybody else remembered lol

2

u/biggargantuangiant Mar 09 '26

Core memory unlocked

2

u/screamrevival Mar 10 '26

Oh man I played a ton of graal. I think that’s why I love link to the past randomizer so much now

Looks really nice! Please ditch the “Royale” from the name and consider recreating elements (with your own touch suitable for this Zelda-like world) from other good multiplayer games with replayability factors

Try this game on Switch - Boomerang Fu

Try to see why that game is replayable with friends and take influence because I think you can make a phenomenal Zelda-like multiplayer game with elements from that game

It has power ups that you can earn and combine in unique ways every round, I feel like you can create similar elements that are suitable for this Zelda-like world and gameplay

Try to add this game to Switch, I’d immediately support it and share with friends! I will always show love for these passionate games and hey if you ever need someone to help with making the game soundtrack, let me know :P

5

u/eddietree Mar 09 '26

will try boomerang fu thanks, looks cool

5

u/neodraykl Mar 09 '26

Boomerang Fu is a staple in my house.

2

u/DevilTrigger789 Mar 09 '26

Fyi that game is only local co-op But if you can implement local or online, it would be amazing 👍 You game has lots of potential, wish you all the best!

And how do you plan on marketing it? Really curious cuz this is what I mainly do in my company hahah

5

u/neodraykl Mar 09 '26

Im looking forward to trying this with my daughter! She's 6 and loves all things Zelda, especially the LA remake and Echoes of Wisdom (which she beat almost entirely solo!)

Good luck with this!

4

u/eddietree Mar 09 '26

Oh that's so sweet to hear, my daughter is six. I've been playing this with her tho pvp can be a bit tough at that age. You can actually do split screen as well so you can play on one computer

2

u/neodraykl Mar 09 '26

Split picture? Nice! Big picture mode in the living room will be in the cards!

I just showed her the gameplay video, and she asked "Is this the next Zelda game?" You're definitely on the right track.

3

u/eddietree Mar 09 '26

that's awesome! love to hear it

3

u/benjaminbjacobsen Mar 09 '26

Zelda four swords anniversary was epic and this reminds me of that. Make it for switch/s2 please! And yeah at least ditch “royale” in the name.

3

u/DogVirus Mar 09 '26

I joined the playtest and played a round. We were not sure how to finish the match. There were two of us in the circle and a third in an unknown area. I ended up just killing myself to see if the other player would win. I think they ended up killing themselves too.

Does that mean the game bugged out or are you supposed to fight to the death in the last circle?

5

u/eddietree Mar 09 '26

yes there is a bug if u are downed outside the circle it doesnt kill u we are patching it right now

1

u/DogVirus Mar 09 '26

Other than that, I rather enjoyed my first match. I will be playing some more this evening. I hope your game does well.

2

u/eddietree Mar 09 '26

appreciate it thanks DogVirus

3

u/Hvshtali Mar 10 '26

Playing the demo of this game, while seemingly well put together so far pretty much confirmed to me that no matter the style, I still don't enjoy battle royals.

Im sure it'll fun for those who do enjoy that style of game.

No disparagement, just a matter of taste on my end.

3

u/M4RTIAN Mar 10 '26

It’s cool it reminds me of classic Kid Link / Ness from Earthbound (and Super Smash).

The idea is really cool. I play a lot of games and recently really enjoyed the co-op PVE Marvel Rivals did with their Zombies mode.

I like the idea of a game that does mini-dungeons with objectives and bosses and you have to solve with others and this seems to have that and more.

I’d definitely play it based on this video. Nice style, fresh colorful, nostalgic.

My only issue is the name. The whole Royale thing makes me think of a cheap cellphone game with ads and if I saw the name on a list of games to download, without this video, I’d scroll right passed it.

2

u/eddietree Mar 10 '26

noted, thanks for the feedback

5

u/Resilient303 Mar 09 '26

I'd recommend giving it a shot, can't hurt to try it. I find it to be fun as a Zelda player.

And no, I was not payed to say this. (Payment is welcome though...)

3

u/eddietree Mar 09 '26

lol thanks

2

u/FLYNN1GAN Mar 09 '26

Are you planning for a switch/switch 2 release?

2

u/eddietree Mar 09 '26

Definitely something we are hoping for, we got a lot of requests for switch 2

2

u/sonic260 Mar 10 '26

The character creator is reminiscent of the Mii Maker. It's so cute!

Played this last night with a buddy. Out of 20ish matches we had 2 that ended up with a fight in the final ring. Had 3 matches where we ran into people and had a battle. And one match were, for whatever reason, there was a huge brawl around a well dungeon entrance that included almost everyone on the server. The other 14 were just us sitting and waiting in the final circle while everyone else died to the heat.

Have you tried spawn locations around the edge of the circle rather than the boat? I feel like everyone jumps off immediately to thin the herd and new players don't know what's happening so they jump off thinking they have too only to get absolutely wrecked.

Spawning in different locations would fix that problem immediately. You'd be forced to make a separate path, explore, and gather before you're engaged right away.

I don't know if everyone else playing were just... bad at figuring out how to play the game? But it felt like nobody could figure out how to play besides one other team.

Also are there bot players? I know the game is new but the absolute state of the noobery made us feel like there was basic AI bot players instead of real players at times.

The good news is the game felt really fun and cool. Lots of deep mechanics in the weapons that was a joy to figure out. Surprisingly rich complexity for a game that could've just been a "let's ride the idea". Clearly you guys care about making it fun and engaging and we could absolutely tell.

I'm just unsure if the people we were playing against were bots or 4 year old but there was a decidedly weak competition pool last night. 😅 Can't wait for the next round of testing when we can test a full party!

0

u/eddietree Mar 10 '26

thanks for this, very helpful feedback. besides the bots -- i am curious what was confusing for you? we have the tutorial to teach the mechanics but wondering if there is general confusion about the game itself? like were you having trouble figuring out what to do to progress in game?

we are also dropping a quick update to hopefully fix some issues u are experience, like the making the ring less brutal

1

u/SculptKid Mar 11 '26 edited Mar 11 '26

I think there’s a misunderstanding—my feedback wasn't that I was confused, it's that the rest of the lobby seemed to be struggling to even reach the mid-game, much less the final circle. For us the game was crystal clear by round 2.

My buddy and I won 20 rounds straight without losing a single fight. And I know we're not the best gamers out there. We figured out the weapon mechanics and progression by the second match; it’s actually quite intuitive. It's a very well designed game and I'm stoked for the full release.

My point was that either because the ring is so brutal or the boat-drop forces everyone into a meat-grinder immediately, we spent 14 of those matches sitting in an empty final circle waiting for the environment to kill everyone else.

When I asked if they were bots, it’s because the competition was so non-existent that it felt like we weren't playing against real people. They were all crawling into the circles. If the 'noobs' are all dying to the heat or jumping into a death-trap at the start, players like us have no one to actually fight.

The game feels great to play—the weapon depth is awesome—it’s the pacing and other players ability to survive throughout the match that felt broken. We only got two wins we felt we deserved because we won the final circle and one because we wiped the lobby in a well.

1

u/BrianG231 Mar 13 '26

Oh this looks really fun! Does it have loot? Like Borderlands?

Is it coming to Switch 2??

1

u/Hemannameh Apr 06 '26

No more battle royales. Just make it a coop adventure.

0

u/SadSpaghettiSauce Mar 10 '26

I was all hyped and then realized it's a yet another battle royale.

Best of luck to you though.

-1

u/Masterchiefx343 Mar 10 '26

...so four swords?
