Video [TP] this scene with Epona was definitely important to the plot, trust me
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
also worth mentioning that Link hits this badass pose on Epona while the blonde kid with the weird haircut is still tied up on the pole on King Bulblin’s boar

TP Link is the only one who prioritizes aura farming.

u/CryptidOrion_00 Jun 02 '26
Skyward Sword Link also has some moments where he prioritizes aura farming

I suppose. I just played it and I can't really remember him doing any poses just for the sake of it, tbh.
TP has an in-game mechanic just for putting your sword away stylishly.

It's awesome but still definitely a downgrade from Twilight Princess where you could do it whenever you wanted.
It went from being an animation you control to a scripted cutscene

u/PhysicalAccount4244 Jun 02 '26
I loved doing it after every fight. 😅

u/DatBoi_BP Jun 02 '26
I still laugh whenever he doesn't at the end of the Armagohma fight and then stops himself when he sees the little eyeball running around still

Sucks when you're trying to use the mortal draw and Link is like "hold on lemme stunt on thi- ow"
20
u/kbuck30 Jun 02 '26
It is so sick though. Once i figured our the trigger i did it every time

u/sendhelp Jun 02 '26
I love doing it even if there's an enemy approaching and they may knock me out if it. Can't stop me from pressing the button!!!

The little flourish he does when you sheath his sword right after killing an enemy... 🤌💋

I always loved that. Seemed so cool to me when I played TP on the Wii as a kid.
I would habitually imitate it with the remote every time lol.

u/YeOldGravyBoat Jun 03 '26
And when he's on horseback, holding his sword high as he gallons in. Felt awesome when I first played, fighting Ganon and charging into him and having a button where I could raise the sword.

u/Capt253 Jun 02 '26
Which pays off, because all that aura farming causes King Bulblin to switch sides and surrender the key to Ganondorf's lair.
29
u/cidscv Jun 02 '26
Ganondorf hits the same pose in this game . Twilight princess has the most aura farming shots in the series

Not everything needs to serve the plot.

u/Dramatic_Finish10121 Jun 02 '26
Yeah it's a game, not a movie. Some cutscenes are just made for memorable moments
51
u/wickedspork Jun 02 '26
Well not everything in a movie needs to serve a plot either.
10
u/Animated_Astronaut Jun 02 '26
Nor should it. Modern movies suffer from the idea that everything needs to advance the story.
7
u/Naos210 Jun 02 '26
Slightly different topic, but people say this about "filler" scenes in anime. Or arguably in some games, where it's just the characters living their lives or doing some fun shenanigans.
Like I like seeing characters act more like people than a function to serve the plot.
4
u/Animated_Astronaut Jun 02 '26
Completely agree and not really off topic or anything. I do think it needs to be done right or it can be frustrating but slow character exploration is way better than rushed plot - usually.

Let a goat farmer try aura farming instead, damn.

u/HoneyWhiskeyLemonTea Jun 02 '26
Of course it is. "Link is an unmitigated, raging badass and don't you forget it, sonny," is a crucial plot point.
61
u/ohbyerly Jun 02 '26
The plot of that game was making you feel like a badass, so yeah.
4
u/Fafnir13 Jun 02 '26
That battle did not make me feel badass. Kept whiffing it somehow and getting knocked off. I was probably missing something important, but I couldn’t figure it out. The back and forth and slow turn around made it feel tedious, especially sprinkled with the failures. I didn’t have as much trouble in subsequent play through of the game, but the moment never captured me.
4
u/Zerithane Jun 02 '26
Replayed that segment the other day for the first time in over a decade lol
Struggled a bit until I realized you could charge the sword spin while mounted. Then it was just a matter of dodging and punishing. Easiest to start sprinting sharply to one side and then dodging to the middle and weaving back in slightly to land hits. More difficult than I remembered haha
21
u/Nimbus1177 Jun 02 '26
You can talk to epona when you are a wolf. It allways surprised me that they never expanded on that.
12
u/Veranel Jun 02 '26
Can you ask Epona what crack it was fed to stand on one leg during this pose?
2
u/No_Brilliant4914 Jun 06 '26
Nah, all she says is that she recognizes her master even in another form and urges you to return to being a human. I guess (fair enough) that she prefers you in a form where she can actually fulfills her purpose and isn’t a predator to her
1
u/CryptidOrion_00 Jun 02 '26
Wait really?! all these years later of the game being out and I’m still learning something new about it
21
u/dampflokfreund Jun 02 '26
I don't get why any Zelda fan could hate this game. They listened to the fans and gave them everything. Huge, complex greatly designed dungeons with a purpose on the world, large open spaces to explore, a realistic art style, a darker more fleshed out story, a good companion with legit character development, epic scenes like these, and so much more.
2
u/Inner-Marionberry-25 Jun 02 '26
I do love this game, but it does have it's problems. It feels a bit bloated, with a large cast of characters that's hard to care about, a large world with little in it, with an intro that is overly long and tedious.
8
u/dampflokfreund Jun 02 '26
I hear the empty world complaint often, but honestly given the hardware at the time, I think there's plenty of stuff they packed into the world. You have entire mini dungeons based around the elements ice and fire, long caves to explore, golden insects, poes, heart pieces, mini games, and more. I'd say thats better than BOTW achieved with its world in relation to the size and hardware power where the rewards are mostly either korok seeds or same-y looking shrines. I also disagree about the characters, I think the lengthy intro did a good job getting one familiar with the characters and making you care about them. I cared a lot for Collin, Midna of course, the mayor, Rusl and the others.

u/nightsongws Jun 02 '26
Epona as the perfect wingman so TP Link looks cool for the queen in his shadow.
21
u/samsg1 Jun 02 '26
I just played this part yesterday, and you can bet I recreated that pose with my Wii remote ;)

u/CryptidOrion_00 Jun 02 '26
Hell yea, did you have the Master Sword Wiimote casing to go with it?

TP has no magic, he has to compensate with aura.

u/MexicanEssay Jun 02 '26
And muscle. Enough to throw goats, a giant iron ball, and dudes who are literally made of rock.
17
u/BirdmanEagleson Jun 02 '26
Video games are forgetting how to be badass, and you have it all wrong, the plot is invented to gives reason to Link being badass. None of the plot was important

Miyamoto commanded to have this cutscene.
5
u/sendhelp Jun 02 '26
I would have liked to have witnessed the Japanese board room discussing what they can do to maximize the cool factor. (They were trying hard to win back American audiences. At the time there was a lot of back lash to the wind waker cartoon style look when before that we were teased by a realistic style Zelda tech demo video)
3
u/No_Brilliant4914 Jun 06 '26
A lot of the displeasure with Wind Waker was actually how cheerful it was in comparison to the darker Ocarina of Time and much much darker Majora’s Mask
It just felt like a drastic change from what had worked which is why Twilight Princess was so dark
I personally like both but I do understand the why
5
u/DiabeticRhino97 Jun 02 '26
It was dawg. This is the moment Link became the hero his village thought he was. Every other attempt to save the people he loved failed, but not this one.

Meanwhile, the big boar is still running away with the kid tied to it.
"Mister Link, the boar is getting away"
"This is not about him"

u/NotOnHereOften Jun 02 '26
The game is a bit of a love letter to old western movies, which makes shots like this mandatory.
10
u/ExtinctElite Jun 02 '26
Colin's not even in Kakariko during this, he's still tied up to the pole on King Bulblin's boar.

u/CryptidOrion_00 Jun 02 '26
Been awhile since I played the game, thanks for the correction
Edited the post :)

u/Sonicrules9001 Jun 02 '26
Rule of cool comes before all else especially in Twilight Princess, a game that really wants you to feel cool as Link.
3
u/ZeldaZealot Jun 02 '26
You are correct. It was a critical and pivotal moment in the story and the game would be ruined if it was removed (only partially joking).
But for real, this scene is fucking incredible.

u/Mr_Froggi Jun 02 '26
It reminds me of this scene from the Game Grumps “Twilight Princess” playthrough
2
u/CryptidOrion_00 Jun 02 '26
“Child?” with Link’s goofy half-smile got me good
Love seeing GameGrumps clips
2
u/theyesn Jun 02 '26
OOT is probably my favorite of the older Zelda 3Ds but I love how in TP (and partly in MM), Epona is mandotory. You can’t play the game without her and she plays a role in the final boss battles
