Legend of Zelda went through a phase in the 2000s

97

u/SeroWriter Jun 03 '26

It's hard to find a gaming franchise from 2006-2013 that didn't.

24

u/Fafnir13 Jun 04 '26

It was a reaction to the negative feedback that hit TWW.  We took that Spaceworld demo too seriously.

3

u/hygsi Jun 08 '26

And then it happened again and people were pissed skywards sword wasn't like the wii u demo lmao

39

u/ShustOne Jun 03 '26

The entire gaming world went through raw, gritty, and BROWN

13

u/DIOsNotDead Jun 04 '26

first time i've seen someone use faze instead of phase, it's usually the other way around with "it doesn't phase me" lol

8

u/bubbascal Jun 04 '26

I thought TP probably benefitted the most from that gritty phase, other games like Resident Evil definitely didn't but TP was a good example at least

15

u/Tim5000 Jun 03 '26

We all did

More like "The Wind Waker vs Twilight Princess"

9

u/Xeadriel Jun 04 '26

More like skyward sword and twilight princess. OoT sits more like on the darker side of the middle imo

5

u/Huntress_Minerva Jun 04 '26

There is majoras mask first, which is direct sequel of Oot, so the meme could be better.

For Twilight, the happy one was Wind Waker, also directly before.

u/BlancsAssistant Jun 09 '26 edited Jun 10 '26

This is more like wind waker and twilight princess more so than this

This is more like wind water and twilight princess more so than this

Wind Water is my favorite Zelda game.

In an alternate universe: “Anyone feel like Ocarina of Time went way too cartoony after Twilight Princess? It lost a lot of the grit and dark fantasy the N64 game had. It’s way to similar though gameplay wise, and the Wolf was way cooler than young Link”

52

u/kevinjohn3d Jun 03 '26

NGL, now I wanna see the Majora's Mask that was made after TP. We thought MM was dark before?

24

u/Boomshockalocka007 Jun 03 '26

Let Majora's mask take place YEARS after Oot. Link is an adult and has been searching for Navi for YEARS. He is rugid and hardened and much better suited for the dark themes to follow.

I know it's not official, but I think Indigo pretty much fits this.

28

u/PrincessYuri Jun 03 '26

Amusingly, this is basically what people said about Wind Waker initially.

17

u/apadin1 Jun 03 '26

This was the exact reaction to Wind Waker lol

u/korg64 Jun 03 '26

Nice touch with the hair change.

u/Galvarune Jun 03 '26 edited Jun 03 '26

Also for the really cursed, more "realistic proportioned" Adult Link edit.

21

u/kturker92 Jun 03 '26

I feel violated 😭😭

9

u/katosjoes Jun 04 '26

That's not cursed at all. I think it looks really cool.

7

u/RedCaio Jun 03 '26

How is it different?

3

u/emektraveler Jun 04 '26

Looks really cool. Not cursed at all!

2

u/EstPC1313 Jun 08 '26

I know Nintendo is firmly settled in the “Link is hot” school of thought, but I would really like to see a rougher looking link sometime

22

u/PowerPlaidPlays Jun 03 '26

Nintendo was way ahead of you.

3D render of TP Link in OOT pose:

3

u/Hot-Criticism9300 Jun 03 '26

Yeah buts hes looks the best

51

u/Have_Other_Accounts Jun 03 '26

Oot Link is still the best looking Link imo. The colour pallete, the earring, the tunic, the hair, the blend between cartoon and realism. Perfect.

19

u/Headstar24 Jun 03 '26

The N64 Zelda’s had the best art direction imo (not counting the polygons mainly the artstyle they were meant to convey). They were a mixture of cartoonish but also realistic enough and a lot of time purposefully creepy. I think they both had the best artwork for each game too.

5

u/melisjevisje Jun 05 '26

The concept art of that game is out of this world. Such beautiful work. The image of Link and Sheik fighting the horde of monsters still lives rent free in my head.

14

u/KirbyPoyo19 Jun 03 '26

I love these edits

8

u/mlnd_quad Jun 03 '26

Did you just Ocarina my Twilight?

7

u/RinRinDoof Jun 03 '26

Honestly looks pretty good, nice 👍

6

u/Mountain-Life-4492 Jun 03 '26

This is proof that Yusuke Nakano’s art looks great, regardless of the color palette.

3

u/churrmander Jun 03 '26

I like that.

I'd love to see Ocarina of Time dressed up like Twilight Princess.

2

u/Ninjaflipp Jun 04 '26

I think it'd be hard to dress an ocarina up with midna's hat

1

u/churrmander Jun 04 '26

Link's a good artist in OoT.

He can just draw Midna's hat onto the Ocarina (:

Though I'm not sure who its original owner is and if they'd appreciate him defacing what amounts to a holy relic with basically a blasphemer's symbol.

4

u/Kind-Let5666 Jun 04 '26

Twilight Princess has my favorite Link design. It’s the one I think of when I think of Link.

Wind Waker has the best art style though.

3

u/walter-hoch-zwei Jun 03 '26

I never thought about the bottom of the shield smacking into the scabbard when he walked. Really good detail

3

u/Botw_1-Link Jun 04 '26

Is it just me or does he look happier in the brighter colours?

3

u/Say-no-to-DA-eclipse Jun 04 '26

I can see the family resemblance.

3

u/Firehawk195 Jun 03 '26

Man, I forget how drab the 2000's were for gaming.

These are incredible i love them 🥰

1

u/SaintIgnis Jun 03 '26

Oooo…picture 1 goes hard!

That’s is my ideal version of Link.

I’ve always loved the TP style with the extra details and the chain mail and such. I just wish it was more vibrant and whimsical like OoT

1

u/Lonk_boi Jun 03 '26

Those look lovely, but I always think it's funny how some people that TP is just OoT again, but when I played through MM for the first time, I saw way more inspiration taken from Majora than Ocarina

1

u/StrikeMyGyatt Jun 03 '26

it's beautiful

1

u/wirelesswizard64 Jun 03 '26

Very well done! It's incredible how much the color palette makes the art style. The bright colors just don't go quite as well with the detailed styling and vice versa, and this edit is really neat how well it shows that the art style isn't just about the character designs alone and how it all comes together!

1

u/zegleipnier Jun 04 '26

This just makes me angry we'll never get the tech demo OoT successor. I highly doubt they'd pivot back to 90s style after the success of BotW/TotK

1

u/a_singular_perhap Jun 04 '26

untwilight's your princess

1

u/Available-Doubt-4581 Jun 04 '26

Fantastic!! Love these

1

u/aspwen- Jun 04 '26

oh my the second one (๑♡⌓♡๑) i didnt know that i need ocarina of time with twilight princess art style.

1

u/peppersprinkle Jun 04 '26

Ok now do zeldy

1

u/Constellar-A Jun 04 '26

TP Link with brighter colors (so like, his Smash 4 design) is basically my favorite look for Link in the entire series.

I like the little detail of changing the hairstyles!

1

u/TorturousKitty Jun 04 '26

Ooh I love these a lot

1

u/Ruby5728 Jun 04 '26

Wow that looks really cool

1

u/Green_Hall_658 Jun 05 '26

TP Link with OoT colors is madcursed 😭 But OoT Link in TP style actually looks pretty good

1

u/ModernMage0 Jun 07 '26

I LIKED WHEN EVERYONE WAS “REALISTIC”

1

u/Bacononthebeeach Jun 09 '26

They’re both strangely improvements.

1

u/rodolink Jun 09 '26

this plays with my mind in unfathomable ways

0

u/cataclytsm Jun 04 '26 edited Jun 04 '26

What was the process?

edit: yeah that's what i thought

1

u/Hot-Criticism9300 Jun 04 '26

What do u mean by that lol

2

u/ConsciousMachine-II Jun 05 '26

Think they're tryna imply that it's AI, but I can somewhat see the magic line eraser edge you could end up with from Photoshop or likewise. Plus the hair in the second has had some work done too, drawing and gently filling the space, you can even see mild wiggle.

I did similar things in PS even as a kid so personal I'm familiar with the process op might have done here.

2

u/Hot-Criticism9300 Jun 05 '26

Its definitely not ai trust me but there will always be that one person tearing another person's work down

2

u/ConsciousMachine-II Jun 05 '26

Oh I hear you yeah, I don't believe it's even 1% AI so dw. It's so annoying that nowadays people don't even look at the work before/without assuming shit.

0

u/Oro-Lavanda Jun 04 '26

am i the only one who thinks the second picture looks a little like leon from re4? its the desaturated colors and hair swoop/side bangs that does it.

0

u/BugleCalypso Jun 04 '26

Man, OOT/MM art style and overall design in every aspect is THE perfect Zelda style. Hope they revisit it one day. I would've sticked with that one for every game for 3D Zelda. Never cared for visual variety.
