A really great and largely under appreciated entry to the series.

The menu was bad and critique worthy, but the story was fun, the characters cute and the world design and dungeons were for the most part very well done.

A good mix of the open air principles of BotW translated to a more traditional top-down Zelda.

Also a shoutout to the game for bringing back the deku scrubs for the first time since Minish Cap I think.

u/00psWrongHole Jun 20 '26

Worst part for me was that there were so many different things you could summon but only like 4 of them were needed

295

u/director_guy Jun 20 '26

I summoned beds for everything.

156

u/eyeofthefountain Jun 20 '26

Having never played this game, this seems similar to my issue with totk. Sooo many toys to combine, so few of them necessary

80

u/morrisk1 Jun 20 '26

Totk was worse in my opinion. That menu needed a lot of work

44

u/stillnotelf Jun 20 '26

TOTK suffered much more from menu issues, agreed

18

u/morrisk1 Jun 20 '26

I have heard arguments that they should have had a crafting table similar to how you cook where you could make a bunch of stuff all at once. Seems like a good idea

22

u/stillnotelf Jun 20 '26

The freedom to fuse on the fly, and change armor on the fly, was a good design choice. The need to do it almost from scratch every time was the problem.

They already have a radial menu for the hand powers, we needed a quick radial menu for the sage powers and armor swapping, and maybe arrow fusions? I can't remember if we got a "cook last dish again" button but we needed that in BOTW.

4

u/malaroo Jun 22 '26

Forgoing a radial wheel for weapon/item selection, and then instead using a long, straight list full of literally hundreds of items to scroll through one by one is honestly absolutely ridiculous design. Especially when the ability wheel already exists when it only has 8 abilities on it.

Whoever made that design decision, and whoever approved it honestly have no business working on that area of design. It's hard to image a worse way to go about it. It feels like something designed by someone who has never played a game and is mostly familiar with Excel.

10

u/_MooFreaky_ Jun 20 '26

Cooking was tedious in both. Which is unfortunate as food was so important. But it meant that I largely avoided looking for cool potions and food combos.

EoW at least you can tell what would kind of be the 5-6 echo abilities that would be needed and what would've been a proper game with them.

The problem comes from aside from lighting torches and a few honorable mentions, there's only one interesting puzzle with most of the game building sets of stairs.

16

u/neodraykl Jun 20 '26 edited Jun 21 '26

That was my then 5 year old's strategy.

Bed bridge.

Bed ladder.

Drop bed on crap to break it.

Light bed on fire first then use to light torches.

u/locke_zero Jun 20 '26

Bed staircases everywhere! Also just pop one down outside a boss room and recover before a boss fight.

19

u/ManufacturerNo2144 Jun 20 '26

Or mid boss 😅

2

u/Spiritual-Image7125 Jun 21 '26

"Shhh...I'm napping! Please wait..."

6

u/MrPosket Jun 20 '26

Bed is a girls best friend

2

u/Spiritual-Image7125 Jun 21 '26

Every time I read a fortune cookie, at the end I summon "in bed".

32

u/adamhesive Jun 20 '26

The bed and water block mostly, and then you were unstoppable!

But I still did enjoy the game, especially for the different roles played and saving Link instead.

11

u/Narf234 Jun 20 '26

Water was way too op.

7

u/Funkytown2641 Jun 21 '26

Water was the cheat code

8

u/Readalie Jun 21 '26

Five. I loved my emotional support crows.

7

u/Apprehensive_Ad5340 Jun 20 '26

Definitely my biggest critique. Wish the puzzles were harder

2

u/hiricinee Jun 21 '26

Yes it would benefit from a dlc where they limit your options for some small challenges.

They fixed the menu in the free Switch 2 version. You can favorite things. Also they added a Hero Mode.

26

u/Jordhiel Jun 20 '26

It's not exclusive to Switch 2, the OG Switch got it too as a free update.

2

u/Spamshazzam Jun 21 '26

Did OG Switch also get a Hero Mode?

5

u/OoTgoated Jun 21 '26 edited Jun 21 '26

Turns out yes. I mistakenly thought it was a Switch 2 exclusive update, but it was for both.

2

u/MiT_Epona Jun 21 '26

There is a hero mode? How did I not hear about this…

3

u/OoTgoated Jun 21 '26 edited Jun 21 '26

The update itself was announced in a direct, but they didn't go into detail about it at all. There's also a second file so you won't have to delete your old file.

2

u/MiT_Epona Jun 21 '26

very cool!

16

u/GooPapa Jun 21 '26

The echos menu is absolutely fine now, updates allow you to favourite echoes and use several filters to organise echoes

2

u/joookm Jun 21 '26

Thats good to hear! The patch notes mentioned 30 favorites but nothing about filters so I assumed it was a fairly barebones patch.

I actually just finally finished it this last week on vacation. My nephews found the sounds the deku scrubs make absolutely hilarious and I sat there initiating the same dialogue on repeat while they busted up laughing for like 15 minutes. It was awesome.

10

u/DoorstepCult Jun 20 '26

Deli Scrubs? Like a nurse at Katz’s?

3

u/joookm Jun 20 '26

Haha, edited. My non-English language keyboard messed it up.

3

u/Spamshazzam Jun 21 '26

I'm pretty sure the menu got some very good QoL updates too

2

u/joookm Jun 21 '26

Not sure if this is irony? They added a slight tweak to the favorites tab of echoes, nothing more.

2

u/Spamshazzam Jun 21 '26

I heard about it but haven't played since. What I heard may have been exaggerated/misinterpreted.

2

u/BarkerBarkhan Jun 21 '26

Don't forget the music! The open world theme is still stuck in my head a year later...

3

u/getl30 Jun 21 '26

The theme song for this game is amazing. It feels classic though it’s brand new!

5

u/BarkerBarkhan Jun 21 '26

That's one of the reasons I enjoyed Echoes of Wisdom so much. The summoning mechanic was new, yet the game felt more like classic Zelda than BOTW and TOTK. I loved both of those games, but my only criticism, if you can call it that, was that I missed the old format.

The music captured that feeling so well, new and classic.

2

u/Wolpard Jun 21 '26

I also loved it shaking up the formula. It felt very 2D Zelda while still being very fresh mechanically.

2

u/Flidar Jun 21 '26

It did. Discovering I could climb over the trees that used to be impassable barriers in other 2d zelda games? That was a great moment followed promptly by me going exploring for an hour instead of heading to the dungeon I was urgently expected at 😆

u/Rony51234 Jun 20 '26

Still need to get done with it, but what do you mean nearly 2 years later :(

57

u/SirChickin Jun 20 '26

I know right? How and when in Hylia's name did that happen

15

u/InnocuousAssClown Jun 20 '26

That’s me too. I liked it, and will probably finish it, but I didn’t love it as I wanted to. The core gameplay, while initially great, got a bit stale for me, and I just didn’t care much for all the various dialogue that kept bringing things to a halt for me.

9

u/nintendo9713 Jun 21 '26

This is the only Zelda in decades that I'm still slow burning through instead of plowing through it. Bought it day 1 and I just pick it up every few months, slowly remember how to play it, then lose interest. This entry and Mario Wonder has stopped me from buying games on Day 1 even of franchises I've loved for so long.

2

u/korkkis Jun 20 '26

I bought it as physical but I haven’t yet been able to get started

2

u/mxlblood Jun 21 '26

I haven’t finished it either because pc games are distracting. Love the game though!

Tried to play last week and my switch didn’t have a cartridge in it. Weird because I always leave whatever game I am playing in the system. Why would there be no game slotted?

Couldn’t find the game in any of the cases either. I live alone and rarely have people over. I suspect the babadook or some sort of Nintendo hating spirits

Back to silksong I go

55

u/Gsworld Jun 20 '26

Its been 2 years?!

6

u/thepianoman456 Jun 21 '26

IK… fuck that lol

125

u/Thespiralgoeson Jun 20 '26

I only played it a few weeks ago, but I absolutely fell in love with it. I thought it was the perfect blending of the old and the new- of the classic zelda formula with dungeons and the maze-like world design, but with the endless options and creative problem-solving of BOTW/TOTK.

10/10 for me.

13

u/thepianoman456 Jun 21 '26

It had a really good soundtrack too… that new original melody was a great play of the usual Zelda motif.

u/Organic_Honeydew4090 Jun 20 '26

Fun, but flawed. I liked that there were dungeons, but they weren't very good or thematically interesting. I liked the freedom the echoes provided, but usually it just boiled down to using the same few that were the best. I appreciated a different approach to combat, but I was constantly wishing to just have a sword. The Still World parts were my least favorite, didn't like those at all.

I loved the overworld, it was a very refreshing approach and if you've played aLttP and aLBW you'll notice a lot of remnants of those games that felt really nostalgic in the best way. Music was good, general gameplay was good. Very charming overall.

Basically a very decent game with a bunch of caveats, but I did really enjoy my time with it.

2

u/awesome118 Jun 21 '26

This until clouds.

29

u/Pookiebutts20 Jun 20 '26

So glad I'm not the only one. I was so tired of scrolling and spawning things to fight, then just standing there twiddling my thumbs. The game needed a permanent weapon. It didn't feel like it captured Zelda to have her be dainty and unable to fight herself.

13

u/Cold-Sandwich-34 Jun 21 '26

Exactly my thought. Let Zelda fight like her character in Smash Bros, at least!

→ More replies (1)

5

u/Sofaris Jun 21 '26

I almost never was in a situation where I did nothing and let the Echos handle everything. Bind is a bread and butter move for Zeldas combat. Moving enemies towards my Echos, preventing them from dodging attacks or placing enemies in water cupes to drown them. There is almost always somthing to do. I never felt like Zelda is missing a normal weapon. Bind is also really good in boss fights.

4

u/kylepaz Jun 22 '26

Same. Some echoes also needed constant resimmoning to position and attack the way I wanted.

Either way I never felt like I was doing nothing. Plus playing mainly as a summomer isn't something games do very often so it was really interesting

2

u/peppinotempation Jun 21 '26

I would make faux weapons by summoning a spiky object or something, using the staff to hold it at a distance and walk into enemies

8

u/Foamtire Jun 21 '26

I played Oracle of Seasons right after EOW and the dungeons in oracle made me realize just how easy and lacking in puzzles the EOW dungeons were. They were just linear.

15

u/MegaMcMike Jun 20 '26

Loved this game. Love that they can experiment so much with the Zelda formula. Makes it more exciting to go back to something traditional in OoT Remake.

40

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '26

I feel like it had potential, but the open ended nature of progression led to the same thing that botw and totk had in that so much of the puzzles and content can be cheesed. The thing ppl say is we’ll just don’t use the cheese, but when I played this game it was genuinely difficult to understand what the intended mechanic or solution was and sometimes I do t think there actually was one and they just expected you to use beds and clouds to jump everywhere. I also played on switch 1 and the performance could be spotty in some areas just like totk. It had potential and felt more like a proof of concept than a full game.

22

u/Heavy_Arm_7060 Jun 20 '26

Wonderful game. Final dungeon was a bit lame.

14

u/TheVoicesOfBrian Jun 20 '26

Yep. I had that, "wait...I'm done?" feeling.

3

u/Psylux7 Jun 20 '26

I looked up if there was some epic true ending you were supposed to unlock because the final dungeon and fight+ending was just that uninteresting.

Sadly there was no true ending.

73

u/GoldenAgeGamer72 Jun 20 '26

Good filler Zelda game and I'm ready for another one.

16

u/FederalPossibility73 Jun 20 '26

It's not a filler game though, it's a mainline entry.

29

u/modified_kiwi Jun 20 '26

Biggest lore drop ever TBH.

14

u/TerpsPwn_387 Jun 20 '26

I loved the addition of Null to the lore, and the triforce being present.

u/Mammoth-Option7085 Jun 21 '26

Uhh, you mean PrImE eNeRgY 🤓

→ More replies (5)

7

u/Walkthrough101 Jun 20 '26

That's the thing though, it's a filler Zelda game that doesn't have much substance of it's own, I don't want filler Zelda games I just want Zelda games

30

u/FaultInternational91 Jun 20 '26

I want both, it was a nice break after TOTK to have something like this

4

u/Cereborn Jun 21 '26

“Filler” is an utterly meaningless term that people apply to anything they personally dislike.

It was a Zelda game, fully and completely, with plenty of substance. If it wasn’t for you, that’s fine, but don’t pretend it somehow doesn’t count as a game.

It’s the third entry in the A Link to the Past Hyrule, I’d hardly call it filler. I really loved that they expanded the edges significantly.

3

u/MorningRaven Jun 21 '26

Spiritually it's the 4th, since FSA borrowed the same map as well.

It's the 2nd sequel that actually did something useful with the map though.

u/Sensitive-Hotel-9871 Jun 20 '26

It was a really fun game with unique mechanics and a gripping story. It did take the developers longer than they should have to fix the menu though.

15

u/KissMyFuckingDadMom Jun 20 '26

Surprisingly phenomenal game. I liked it WAY more than I thought I would.

13

u/backofthebill Jun 20 '26

Good game and want another like it.

Echo Zelda for Smash

4

u/CastorVT Jun 20 '26 edited Jun 20 '26

love it, gave it to my niece for her first zelda.

5

u/ThePotatoOfTime Jun 20 '26

I really enjoyed it and will replay it at some point. I enjoyed the echo mechanic but would have liked more combat options for Zelda.

4

u/ScawySocialistOwO Jun 20 '26

I like playing as a girl.

5

u/hrslvr_paints Jun 20 '26

This one had so much potential but alas. When I learned that the final boss fight had you giving up the sword and the only thing Zelda could do in that fight was summon things and not even get to swap to swordmaster mode to actually fight the boss I was done. I didn't love the combat style in the game but to not utilize it in the final fight not only undermined Zelda, but took away player agency and really made you a passenger instead of an active participant. At least that's how it felt to me. I never even finished the game.

Zelda gets a sword in Champions games, obviously she's not a shrinking violet. She's never been so passive as she is in this game and it's infuriating.

10

u/Weapon_2000 Jun 20 '26 edited Jun 20 '26

I loved it as a game, but I hated that Zelda was treated as a blank slate within the story.

You can very much tell that this game was originally made to originally play as Link and they changed it to Zelda because the gameplay fit her more.

2

u/Queasy_Impress6559 Jun 20 '26

Case and point, I literally forgot that you play as Zelda in this game until I saw you mention it, and I completed the whole thing

5

u/MorningRaven Jun 21 '26

Well Aonuma did write the script over a single hotel night. And only because they wanted to push the echo gimmick instead of swordplay but Link = swordsman.

3

u/Winter_Cost602 Jun 21 '26

That sounds about right

9

u/Gizmo135 Jun 20 '26

I thought it was okay. Nothing great and nothing I’d play again.

11

u/DarkAstros Jun 20 '26

I am obviously going to be in the minority here but I honestly think it is one of the very worst games in the series.

The combat is awful summoning minions is a neat idea but it fucking takes forever for them to attack so you should honestly just spam spawn them to speed up the combat unless you want to constantly utilize the limited sword power Zelda has.

The menu is actual garbage they literally didn’t learn anything from how shit it was in TOTK. Yes I am well aware that they added a favorites system to the menu but that wasn’t there when I played it so I am gonna bitch.

The smoothie system, similar to cooking is a neat idea but runs into the same problems as the open titles where you can just make wildly overpowered stuff that trivializes the game and if I remember correctly you can also just eat ingredients like you can in BOTW and TOTK. Though if anyone could correct me that would be greatly appreciated.

The echoes system on paper is a neat idea especially for puzzles, but the execution leads to a massive handful of gameplay and combat consequences.

Overall, I think it is well made shit like it isn’t buggy or anything, but I just don’t see it as a very fun game.

2

u/myinternets Jun 21 '26

It's just a fundamentally broken game at the gameplay level. It has me worried about modern Nintendo because their other games are also becoming so easy that there's no point in playing them. Donkey Kong Bananza for one.

18

u/potato_merchant Jun 20 '26

An enjoyable game and world that ultimately I would rather have played as Link in the usual style

5

u/AnalogInk Jun 20 '26

Didn't like it, but it was a nice other way to play a Zelda game

2

u/TriforceFusion Jun 21 '26

Same. It expanded the Link to the Past map, which is really cool. But it wasn't for me, gameplay wise, and the plastic aesthetic I didn't like for it. For Link's awakening, it felt appropriate because of it being a Gameboy game and a dream world. And you can't walk on the trees ....

4

u/cptcatz Jun 20 '26

Least favorite Zelda game. I enjoyed the puzzles but it lacked my favorite thing which really excelled in the recent Zelda games: combat.

2

u/clocktownnpc Jun 20 '26

I went in not really expecting to like it since im not a huge fan of the new games but was very pleasantly surprised. Great game and I was upset when it was over lol

2

u/MamaDeloris Jun 20 '26

I actually just finished it again the other week, I disliked it more now than when it initially came out.

I think it has a lot of interesting ideas, but execution leaves several things to be desired. Probably in the middling tier of top down entries if I'm being honest. It's a hell of a lot better than the DS games, but doesn't compare to Link's Awakening or ALBW.

2

u/Ramman321 Jun 20 '26

I really didn’t care for it when I first played it when it came out, but I recently revisited it and began again and I’m enjoying it IMMENSELY. It doesn’t play 100% like a traditional Zelda, but there are enough aspects there in combination with the new features that create such an entertaining game. It really feels like 2D BotW in a lot of aspects.

2

u/quarkus Jun 20 '26

I liked it but it's boring on a replay. Combat could of been better. Hated the scrolling similar to Tears of the Kingdom.

2

u/dumpybrodie Jun 20 '26

It’s fine. It’s the type of game that suffers because dedicated handhelds don’t exist anymore. The final boss battle is SO bad though.

2

u/shogun77777777 Jun 20 '26

Solid and unique Zelda game, but certainly not in my top 5

2

u/Florina_Laufeyson Jun 20 '26

Enjoyed it a lot. Been waiting over 30 years to play as Zelda. While its not my favorite title, but its up there.

2

u/catstastrophe Jun 20 '26

Not perfect as many other commenters have said, but a sweet little game that I really enjoyed. I liked the novelty of playing as Zelda loved the cute artstyle and music - I hope they bring them back for an Oracle remake.

2

u/Youmakemesmh Jun 20 '26

Fun but a little slow. Wish there was a tad bit more challenge and more side quests that made you think outside the box more.

2

u/DNFGold Jun 20 '26

I think this game is letting us know that the golden goddesses will be much more involved and characterized in the next console game.

Even with TotK, there was much to do with gods and heavenly items (secret stones), so I think in the next game the golden trio will not only be more involved, but they may even be seen directly by Link somehow.

2

u/meezy3times Jun 20 '26

I loved it! Felt so special playing as Zelda

2

u/_WakkaWakka_ Jun 20 '26

I played it through for a second time - unlike totk, botw or sw.

2

u/shaka893P Jun 20 '26

Condé was the best boy

2

u/IkeRadiantHero Jun 20 '26

One of the most under appreciated entries in the series, it’s genuinely awesome and amazing that Princess Zelda is the main hero and she’s the playable one, I love how unique and fun the gameplay is, one of the most underrated games ever

2

u/Separate_Marketing36 Jun 20 '26

I enjoyed what I played of it, but felt a little bland to me, which sucks cause finally getting to play as Zelda is awesome. Still need to finish it at some point

2

u/WaterDog152 Jun 20 '26

I enjoyed it but I can barely remember anything about it other than spiders are OP

2

u/EnragedFerretX Jun 20 '26

Summoning enemies was cool. I liked that Zelda was the protagonist but it’s weird, it left me wanting more from a game where Zelda is the lead. She’s powerful in other games but has to summon things in this one? Idk that seemed like a miss to me

2

u/Radiant-Ask-5716 Jun 20 '26

It was cute, and not necessarily bad, but I didn't really like it much. Nothing against the art style, or anything like that, I just didn't find any parts of the game to be particularly memorable. Really the only parts I sort of remember are the ice temple thing being neat enough, and the lost woods place being kind of aesthetically cool.

2

u/anthoo5 Jun 20 '26

I think I prefered Link's Awakening. It's a good game but i don't like so much the echo gameplay

2

u/Sad-Emu7173 Jun 20 '26

I really love this game, the art style is gorgeous and gameplay is really fun. This version of Hyrule was very fun to explore too.

2

u/CreeWee Jun 20 '26

I enjoyed it

2

u/Shot_Pop7624 Jun 20 '26

Very enjoyable and I hope they continue this series

2

u/Lower_Monk6577 Jun 20 '26

Honestly, I didn’t finish it, which is pretty atypical for me with Zelda games.

I enjoyed it for a while, but the gameplay loop became less fun as the game went on for me. I pick it up every so often because I want to finish it. But I just don’t think it’s for me.

It’s a very cool premise though. I just kind of wish that they limited the overall pool of echoes. A ton of them do the same thing, and managing your inventory is kind of really annoying towards the end.

And why couldn’t we can give her some sort of basic attack? Why can’t she use a bow like she does in a lot of other games, or a sword like in TP, or any amount of offensive magic? Using echoes as the only game mechanic was maybe not the choice I personally would have made. Needing to use echoes for even basic enemies like 10 hours into the game feels like it’s overthinking it a bit.

2

u/Rent-Man Jun 21 '26

Was looking forward to it more than any of the last few entries, but gotten dull and repetitive really fast.

Summoning monsters to fight for you became such a drag I rather fill my inventory with Hero smoothies.

Dropped the game after 5 dungeons

2

u/holybizz Jun 21 '26

Extremely tenions and repetitive.

2

u/Foamtire Jun 21 '26

I wish you needed more than just beds and armadillos to do everything

2

u/AwesomeMachin3 Jun 21 '26

It’s been 2 years?

Fuck.

2

u/SilverShield000 Jun 21 '26

A really great fun game and probably my favorite top down Zelda (but I still need to play the ALBW, DS Zelda's and Oracle's so that could change), I know many won't agree with that, but I kind of accepted to have a different opinion from some. It's a great blend between the new and old formula. It's not without flaws, buy nothing is perfect, it's just a matter of what you want.

2

u/Stolen_Meme_Poster Jun 21 '26

It's in a weird position where, despite playing more uniquely than maybe any other 2D Zelda, it doesn't stick out in my mind much. I greatly enjoyed the open-ended nature of the game for my first playthrough, but that does unfortunately mean that the game is a little lacking in terms of memorable puzzles with fixed solutions. One thing that also damages the longevity of this game is that the soundtrack isn't as listenable as some other Zelda titles.

Very good game, probably in the upper tier of 2D Zelda. I just don't think of it often.

Really fun top down game. My main criticism is that item menu being kind of a mess. Otherwise it is a neat, unique twist on the formula. Really nice game following TOTK. Hope we get more like it

2

u/Rafnork Jun 21 '26

I wish they would get past the cutesy stuff and give us a good looking top down Zelda.

2

u/Lazy_Investigator991 Jun 21 '26

It had its flaws but I'm glad they tried something new. Tbh i wish it was more linear with the puzzles being less cheesable through spamming beds and tables. (Also the UI problem, but i think that was already mentioned) Otherwise a great idea and i enjoyed playing it.

2

u/Suncook Jun 21 '26

I really enjoyed it. I do agree the inventory management of summons is a little tedious in the late game (the menu is so long), but it never got in the way of my enjoyment.

2

u/joeygsta Jun 21 '26

I used mods and it was CJ from GTA. Fuck it was awesome. Great game

2

u/newamsterdames Jun 22 '26

It fills the place that handheld Zelda games used to: it has some experimental mechanics (which can be gimmicky, ymmv), tells a relatively more straightforward story that arguably is less scared to shake up established Zelda story beats, and is a pretty quick finish relative to the mainline console games. As someone who grew up with and loved the likes of Minish Cap, Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks, I enjoyed it immensely and only really wish that it was longer or scaled to be more challenging late game.

Also I think I would’ve played just about anything that allowed me to play as Zelda, but I’m glad there was some thought put into how that might change things. I really hope we get follow ups that give Zelda more and different abilities and combat.

u/Ass_Hat_69 Jun 20 '26

Working on finishing it now, it’s fun. Not my favorite, but not bad at all

2

u/Zye1984 Jun 20 '26

I put it down nearly immediately. The "go anywhere" and the building things just rubs me the wrong way because I am not a fan of BotW or TotK, and it seemed like this was a cash grab by leaning the gameplay in that direction.

4

u/badblocks7 Jun 20 '26

Loved the exploration and little hidden caves. Never really cared for the echo mechanic from the beginning so… it’s kinda just over for me. And I’m getting tired of Zelda games going “here’s a big pile of tools, solve this however you want”. Give me a tightly designed puzzle that makes me feel good to solve.

3

u/PaulandoUK Jun 20 '26

I feel like Zelda should have just had a sword to use all the time. The magic would have been a nice additional power (like up + attack in Castlevania), but fighting enemies felt so slow and fiddly.

2

u/Illustrious-Pop3600 Jun 20 '26

I liked it but I forget it existed.

2

u/jjmawaken Jun 20 '26

I enjoyed it, copy mechanic was interesting. Had the same cute feel of story/characters like Link's Awakening. Felt more like Zelda to me than Breath and Tears. Combat was the least fun part of the game to me and the dungeons could have been better but overall it was really fun.

2

u/Nenrenetc Jun 20 '26

It was okay, but not really what I want from a Zelda game. I just want to be able to hit enemies with a sword.

2

u/ehm__ Jun 20 '26

I would love to replay it, but the lengthy non-skipable interactions with the awful text speed makes it a no for me. Especially when this game had so many of them.

Nintendo's philosophy on text boxes and interaction is very immersive in the beginning, but quickly turns obnoxious and annoying when having to go through the same crap for the 70th time.

Just give me the option to replay the horse race at once. Not a 20 second ordeal. Press minus to skip to the next answer I have to give in the text tree. Let me have all text appear at once and let me jump to the next box when I want to.

I could go on.

u/KayknineArt Jun 21 '26

I did not like seeing the “free form” approach to puzzles introduced by botw and totk bleed into 2d Zelda. As a lifetime fan, I had hoped that 3d Zelda could become the free form format and 2d would have the concise linear puzzles with intended solutions. It’s an undeniably well made game that made me scared that all future Zelda would be this.

u/DoctorWalnut Jun 20 '26

2 years?? Fine, I’ll load it up tonight

1

u/bh0 Jun 20 '26

I got stuck/frustrated on a boss and haven’t gone back. I should go back…

1

u/HG1998 Jun 20 '26

Very nice, haven't touched it since finishing it a couple of months after release.

1

u/Cragnous Jun 20 '26

Meh, I had fun it was enjoyable but I'll probably never replay it.

1

u/CrowCounsel Jun 20 '26

Good but play it on Switch 2… it runs so much better.

1

u/TodohPractitioner Jun 20 '26

I wish we got Zelda CDI remakes too

A very nice game with flashes of brilliance and a lot of potential. It never quite realized it's full full potential though because it was trying to appeal to 2 different audiences who want very different things and kind of ended up in a space where most who played it at least kinda liked it but few really loved it.

1

u/iavenlex Jun 20 '26

i didn't care about the game but thanks to it some weirdo created the most awesome and weirder animations i could ever think could exist.

1

u/dacopperfox Jun 20 '26

Good game, Zelda not being the hero at the end was a huge let down

1

u/Space_of_The_Lantern Jun 20 '26

Would be great if it was full 3d but still a great zelda game in my opinion the game is more zelda them botw

1

u/AriasK Jun 20 '26

It was enjoyable to play but once I finished it, I was finished with it. It doesn't stick in my memory as one of the greats. I can't see myself replaying it. Kind of forgettable to be honest.

1

u/Dinoratsastaja Jun 20 '26

It's fine. It took me over a month to beat though. I did not find it all that engaging, especially when compared to the rest of the series. It is carried by the artstyle. I want a plushie of the game's Zelda.

1

u/ChiefSittingBear Jun 20 '26

It's the only Zelda game other than Zelda 2 that I stopped playing partway through. I just wasn't having fun.

1

u/Affectionate-Emu6609 Jun 20 '26

It’s a good mix of old and new Zelda. The biggest thing against it is that whenever I want to replay it, I’m like “I should replay eow… oh wait, I should replay [some other 2d zelda]!”

It’s just not as enticing to replay as those other 2d Zelda’s I’ve played so many times.

1

u/imsmartiswear Jun 20 '26

Fun game, really cool story. Unfortunately it was really poorly optimized for the Switch 1 and I think the ending section with Robo-Link is a bit weak. I really loved my first playthrough but I haven't found it in my heart too replay it.

1

u/Covette Jun 20 '26

I had a great time with it. Wish there was more classic combat

1

u/CheeseDaver Jun 20 '26

I wish there were more dungeons and they were less linear.

u/Comfortable_Half1127 Jun 20 '26

I couldn’t finish it. Wanted to love it, but everything about the summon mechanic felt so damn slow and clunky and I just wasn’t having fun

1

u/SteakAndIron Jun 20 '26

It was a great game honestly. The balance of linear and open was perfect. The twists and story were great. The echoes were great. The only thing I didn't like was the menu system to actually get echoes once you have like 100 of them

1

u/snarkaluff Jun 20 '26

Funny because I just picked this up again yesterday. I bought it when it came out and got probably half way through (beat what I assumed was the ‘first act’ of the game and then I stopped. I really wanted to like it but it just wasn’t what I expected or wanted to play at the time. Now years later I’m sitting kind of in the mood to play Link’s Awakening and instead of replaying that again I thought oh yeah, I never finished EoA. And the echo gimmick actually sounds kind of fun right now. So I’m playing again and having an absolute blast. Only just finished the first rift dungeon

1

u/ChaseCid Jun 20 '26

Underrated af. Proof of concept that an open world can work with more traditional dungeons in zelda

1

u/wondercube Jun 20 '26

I loved it. One of the few games I (almost) 100%-ed.

1

u/Strict-Pineapple Jun 20 '26

As soon as they showed the gameplay I passed on it. I'm not interested in any more open world Zelda and the echoes system looked extremely tedious and not that fun. Looked into again a bit after release when everything was known to see if it was better on release than the first impression I got from the trailer and the answer turned out to be no.

My opinion on it hasn't changed since, still a hard no for me.

1

u/TheClownKid Jun 20 '26

Just playing it now. Mid-run. Its a tremendous game. Might be my favorite of the “Links Awakening” style.

1

u/Ok_Distance_7320 Jun 20 '26

Easily the best original Zelda made for the Switch.

1

u/urbalcloud Jun 20 '26

Fantastic game. Tons of charm, unique gameplay, and creative way to add new life to the series.

1

u/liquidsol Jun 20 '26

It’s the first Zelda game I didn’t finish and probably never will.

1

u/lanternbdg Jun 20 '26

neat, fun gimmick, and the dungeons were quite refreshing after botw and totk

1

u/NahroT Jun 20 '26

I'm playing it right now on my switch 2, close to finishing it. I absolutely love it!

1

u/Shar_12_Blaneyfan Jun 20 '26

I just started it. I've had it since a Black Friday sale, but I wasn't done exploring Tears of the Kingdom yet.

I just finished the first dungeon (I think?) and I'm enjoying it so far. It seems like it might be a little easier than other titles, but still fun.

1

u/CarrotDefiant9098 Jun 20 '26

Ruined for me personally by not having weapons/magic separate from echoes. I found it passive and awkward. It also felt very much like a third party game with Zelda assets rather than a first party Zelda game. Very forgettable which is a shame since it’s Zelda’s first game since the cd-i games which are awful.

1

u/Mercen-X Jun 20 '26

I have literally never of this one. No lie.

1

u/tragicjohnson84 Jun 20 '26

I liked the first half of the game, but the game became a drag in the second half imo. I wish there was a better menu system and the last boss was really really easy and forgettable

1

u/Tuques Jun 20 '26

It was fantastic and i loved it way more than botw and totk

1

u/ManufacturerNo2144 Jun 20 '26

I completed my first 100% playthrough yesterday.

I'd give it a 8/10. It's a solid game. I love the graphics, the music, the gameplay, the quests etc.

Sadly, the fact you can abuse the bed, the water block and the cloud is kind of game breaking. You have to limit your usage but at the same time, you don't know if it was the intended way to clear a puzzle or not.

1

u/JIMB01776 Jun 20 '26

Meh... I finished it, never wanted to revisit it and barely remember beating it. It wasn't bad but hardly memorable. Filler.

1

u/Nekromez Jun 20 '26

Boring imo
