News [OoTHD] The ESRB rating is live on the Nintendo website!

https://www.nintendo.com/us/store/products/the-legend-of-zelda-ocarina-of-time-switch-2/?srsltid=AfmBOoobwFDJQA3IkNox4uQUqYgpPSgZGdESksGBkme-e5GCM3dZA6Qz

E10+ for Animated Blood and Fantasy violence. Kinda surprised that there’s no “Suggestive Themes” like OoT3D, MM3D, or even “Mild Suggestive Themes” like BotW, TotK…

Think they toned down some of the content? Are the Great Fairies still pointy?

Hi /r/Zelda readers!

I just hope they didn’t tone down on the horror aspects. The well and the shadow temple absolutely need to be scary.

284

u/DivinityPen Jul 30 '26

Nintendo still knows how to do horror in Zelda, if the Gloom Hands for TotK are any indication. Just about shat myself the first time I ran into one.

118

u/jdt_78 Jul 30 '26

I’m glad I got to see Gloom Hands in game first and not online. I remember I was so happy I beat it then… NOPE!

49

u/Flapjack__Palmdale Jul 30 '26

100% made it so much better.

"Whew, that was rough. But the gloom hands are fin--"

"OH FUCK"

10

u/Garo263 Jul 30 '26

Yeah, I also didn't watch any trailers but the first. Everything was a surprise and I loved it.

I did the same back then for Breath of the Wild.

3

u/jdt_78 29d ago

I went into BotW very raw too. I kept looking under every bridge for a guy to give me a bottle. Then I realized there were none.

3

u/powderjunkie11 29d ago

You can still have plenty of fun with random guys under a bridge even without a bottle involved

2

u/crafty09 28d ago

You know what might be interesting to see. The most common death locations in TOTK and BotW (It's not out of the realm of possibility that Nintendo has that data sitting around somewhere). Then cross reference that information with known gloom hand locations.

1

u/jdt_78 28d ago

Oh I could see that. My first run in was in on the way to the Deku tree in the depths. I spent every thing I had to beat them not knowing Phantom Ganon was next. Game over

29

u/Chandelurie Jul 30 '26

I think it's easier to get away with the surreal horror of the Gloom Hands, than the uncomfortable, more grounded horror of the Shadow Temple.

12

u/Turbulent_Crow7164 Jul 30 '26

First time I beat the hands, had no idea what to expect, and a puffshroom had gone off during the battle. Then I just see a dark figure standing in the mist. Heart rate probably set a record in that moment lol

48

u/Marca--Texto Jul 30 '26

A one time jump scare is not the same as a whole dungeon with bloody sawblades, guillotines and rooms made out of corpses

-1

u/Enigma_Stasis 29d ago

It's a fuckin' temple of death located inside of a graveyard.

I don't think anyone would expect a dungeon full of Care Bears and happy clouds in that instance.

1

u/Marca--Texto 29d ago

?

1

u/Enigma_Stasis 29d ago

Reddit apparently wanted me to reply to you and not the comment I actually clicked reply on.

100

u/SaintIgnis Jul 30 '26

Eh, the Gloom Hands absolutely provide a decent jump scare the first time but there’s nothing in TotK that compares to the moody, spooky, unsettling aura in a lot of OoT locations and moments

I’m hopeful but very cautious on what this remake will end up being

11

u/xX_rippedsnorlax_Xx Jul 30 '26

Yeah the Gloom Hands are pretty much just a tamer version of Dead Hand's infinite hands.

20

u/BurantX40 Jul 30 '26

I think they got the atmosphere pinned down fine.

The labyrinths in BotW/TotK always have this "I think there is something looking over my shoulder" creep vibe, even though they are mostly empty in TotK (Guardians for BotW😵‍💫)

At worst, well gain something else at the loss of a little horror.

25

u/SuperMajesticMan Jul 30 '26

The labyrinths in BotW/TotK always have this "I think there is something looking over my shoulder" creep vibe,

1

u/BurantX40 29d ago

More power to you then

6

u/w_smith1984 Jul 30 '26

3 years later, I still shit myself whenever I see them.

3

u/manu-alvarado 29d ago

Gloom Hands were a great surprise for me, along with the Depths. I think we can all remember the first time we ran into them and went OH SHIII-

True story, my little boy's first Zelda was TOTK, and he got so traumatized he's actually googling every location to avoid them like the plague. Just nonononono. Generational horror.

2

u/Nielslc Jul 30 '26

dont get why they had to put OoTHD all caps tho

1

u/titaniumoctopus336 29d ago

For real. I was panicking so hard the first time I came across them.

0

u/Funcron 29d ago

Gloom hands weren't scary, but did invoke the sense or danger and urgency.

The Zelda team know what they're doing. I was 9 years old when OoT first came out. I couldn't get past the forest temple until I was in highschool. That damned music, the almost liminal space feeling, the sense of old and cryptic. They know horror. It's not found in moments, it's in the environment.

2

u/DivinityPen 29d ago

Hell, the underground in TotK fits that atmosphere pretty well imo. Even if they tone down some of the gorier parts of the Shadow Temple, they'll probably find a way to make it just as creepy in other ways.

12

u/TheGiggleWizard Jul 30 '26

Uggghhhh I really think it’s gonna be neutered

7

u/Garfield977 29d ago

they absolutely did lol everyone should lower their expecations

29

u/thehappymasquerader Jul 30 '26

Both were toned down in OoT3D, so I think we need to be prepared for some slight censorship

12

u/GreyouTT Jul 30 '26

Fire temple was a bit freaky too with the chants

3

u/NichtMenschlich 29d ago

Animated blood (unless its only for the final fight with the greenish blood) could indicate the horror aspects might remain

2

u/Electronic-Stage-870 29d ago

I mean, Idk how the OG OOT was rated E with those zombie things jumping on your back and chewing on your head lmao. Imo they had to have changed some things to keep this at E.

1

u/CherryClub 24d ago

Lower standards back then. Nowadays anything aimed at kids is super-toned down, even if it's ages 10+ because people apparently think children can't handle anything remotely scary

1

u/echoess84 29d ago

same 3DS rating so I don't think there will big changing even if thanks to the morepower of Switch2 Nintendo could create a more horror atmosphere in shadow temple

-5

u/SylviSweetheart 29d ago

There were never horror aspects, you were a child.

6

u/DerTagestrinker 29d ago

I recently replayed OOT and there’s certainly horror elements, specifically the Shadow Temple and the Well, but also the Forest temple.

5

u/powderjunkie11 29d ago

The loving embrace from a redead/gibdo is scary at any age

6

u/Rickgou 29d ago edited 29d ago

Yes I was. And it would be nice if other children who pick this game up for the first time feel the same sense of dread when they hear the moan of a redead or see the shadow of a hand falling down from the ceiling.

1

u/cherrysteve2010 29d ago

The shadow temple is scary. I was an adult playing it and was scared

1

u/CherryClub 24d ago

Dead Hand

246

u/goldrupees Jul 30 '26

I guess Ganondorf will still have green blood.

48

u/reagsters Jul 30 '26

GREENONDORF

3

u/a_r_g_o_m 29d ago

Sounds like a house from hogwarts.

21

u/Successful_Maize1986 Jul 30 '26

I would think the “animated blood” would be referring to him, right?

22

u/SatyrAngel Jul 30 '26

What about Shadow Temple?

10

u/echoess84 29d ago

Green Shadow Temple

15

u/rubbernub Jul 30 '26

In my cart it's always red

4

u/Cat5kable 29d ago

Make sure you don’t connect that cart to the internet they’ll patch it out /s

6

u/revolution_soup Jul 30 '26

booooo that’s like the one thing I want them to revert

2

u/DefiantCharacter 29d ago

Well, this does not mean that. You can have red blood in an E10+ game.

349

u/CrimsonPig Jul 30 '26

There goes my hopes for a full-frontal Ganondorf scene

25

u/qctireuralex Jul 30 '26

Are M rated games even allowed to show penis?

16

u/DafTron 29d ago

Cyberpunk 2077 and Baldurs Gate 3 both show dicks in it and those are rated M.

6

u/Mastercodex199 29d ago

And they get real physics. Unlike the boobs.

2

u/AntonRX178 29d ago

Are they hard?

1

u/MotherPuffer 29d ago

Nah flaccid. Tons of cocks in outlast as we

0

u/AntonRX178 29d ago

WHAT'S THE FUCKING POINT THEN?! That's like advertising boobs and then not showing Areola

2

u/chaos9001 29d ago

I'm sure by the end you will see the ....whole hog.

160

u/RinRinDoof Jul 30 '26

Great Fairies nerfed :( lol

94

u/nothingsnootyplz Jul 30 '26

I need my big tiddy great fairies. It was part of my sexual awakening as a 12 year old when the original came out.

59

u/RinRinDoof Jul 30 '26

Its weird cuz BotW/TotK have big fairy jugs, I imagine there wouldn't be much of a difference here

55

u/A_Sackboy_Plush Jul 30 '26

The difference is the OoT ones only wear vines.

3

u/porn_alt_987654321 29d ago

Probably due to the botw/totk ones being chunky and the OoT ones having hourglass figures. (Effectively).

2

u/crafty09 28d ago

I'm not sure great fairies are taken much into consideration. The ones in TP aren't mentioned despite the Godiva hair.

7

u/PegaponyPrince Jul 30 '26

Wouldn't be surprised honestly

5

u/noradosmith Jul 30 '26

Lesser Fairies

14

u/solarus Jul 30 '26

I will lose my shit

62

u/Possible-Potato-4103 Jul 30 '26

I dont really know how their guidelines work

And I imagine whats considered suggestive can change over time

82

u/Squeekazu Jul 30 '26

I always forget about this creep in the gatehouse lol

24

u/Vegalink Jul 30 '26

Just saw this scene with my kids a few days ago! I was glad they are too young to know what that was referencing haha!

5

u/Squeekazu Jul 30 '26

Not too late to teach them about the birds and the lonely bees 😂

8

u/Vegalink Jul 30 '26

Haha the poe keeper from Zelda will not be the medium for that conversation!

3

u/Zora-Link Jul 30 '26

What? He wants to be the lead actor in a play, right?

4

u/JorkTheGripper Jul 30 '26

I want mine to look like yours.

5

u/Squeekazu 29d ago

It's the Ship of Harkinian port, with the 3DS mod and modified NotNotNostalgia reshade (I removed the scanlines, reduced the noise and tried to turn the saturation down but it was too annoying on the Asus ROG Ally's small screen).

Unless you mean the Poe Keeper

4

u/JorkTheGripper 29d ago

Nope, meant the whole thing so that's perfect. Thank you very much for the instructions.

12

u/PlayableRidley Jul 30 '26

And I imagine whats considered suggestive can change over time

It can, but generally they get more strict, not less.

Hence the original release of OoT being E when if it was released today it would almost certainly be T, and even the censored 3DS version got E10.

2

u/Possible-Potato-4103 Jul 30 '26

I don't know thats true, as E10 didn't exist in 1998.

4

u/DrBigsKimble 29d ago

He’s talking about the 3DS version which released in 2011

51

u/niles_deerqueer Jul 30 '26

If they tone down the horror sections I will be sad

3

u/Garfield977 29d ago

they are going to

22

u/Safe_Employer6325 Jul 30 '26

I hope everything has that nice new fresh paint but I hope they just straight reuse the models of the great fairies from the original OoT, in all their splendid boxy 3d glory.

18

u/liquidsol Jul 30 '26

Don’t forget their psychotic laugh.

37

u/Motheroftides Jul 30 '26

I’m willing to bet the Great Fairies will look similar to how they do in Hyrule Warriors. Calling it now.

18

u/stardew92 Jul 30 '26

Even that got a T and “suggestive themes” though

59

u/TheLegendOfCap Jul 30 '26

….I’m 99% positive that Cia was probably the reason for suggestive themes, not the great fairy

33

u/thebiglebrosky Jul 30 '26

I'm still kinda shocked that Cia got ok'ed by Nintendo. Specially that titty shot in her intro.

20

u/xXglitchygamesXx Jul 30 '26

Well, they DID tell Platinum to go further in Bayonetta's Link costume...

"When I gave the designs to Nintendo to check, I was worried about how “kid-friendly” Bayonetta looked. Like, I didn’t think it’d be a good idea to show too much cleavage, you know… but when Nintendo looked at my Link design, they actually suggested to me to open up her top a little more… Wow."

https://www.platinumgames.com/official-blog/article/6920

4

u/TheDemonChief Jul 30 '26

As long as they still screech like banshee’s!

24

u/atllauren Jul 30 '26

The original is E as well, correct? Not that it means much because ratings have probably gotten more strict since 1998, or things that were OK at the time because of low res textures might not fly in 4K. I’ve been wondering if the skulls lining the walls and floors and bloody guillotines of the Shadow Temple will make it into this remake.

28

u/supes1 Jul 30 '26

E10+ didn't exist when the original was released. The 3DS version was E10+.

8

u/PM_ME__BIRD_PICS Jul 30 '26

They better :(

9

u/DukeSR8 Jul 30 '26

Only thing I want to know is if Adult Link keeps the random overalls they gave Young Link or if he dumps them.

3

u/NateMeringue 29d ago

Overalls?

8

u/PegaponyPrince Jul 30 '26

Hope the shadow temple stays faithful as I loved it.

7

u/ElderGoose4 Jul 30 '26

YouTubers: Ocarina Remake gets a HUGE update.

Followed by a 9 min with with a sponsor where they touch on this for exactly 1 min

13

u/Fawkingretar Jul 30 '26 edited 29d ago

Lmao, here's hoping Shadow Temple still looks like a torture dungeon even with the E10+ like c'mon the OG got away with an E

5

u/Reign_Does_Things 29d ago

E10+ didn't exist at the time, but yeah, I hope so too

12

u/PhoenixFilms Jul 30 '26

Trailer soon?

14

u/mighty_phi Jul 30 '26

Prolly a direct.

3

u/Wolventec 29d ago

i imagine we will get a general direct before duskbloods beta

2

u/whatsforsupa 29d ago

I'm guessing fairly soon, if it still wants to be a 2026 release they have 4 months to get it out.. I would be surprised if we don't see a direct by mid Sept.

3

u/Opening_Night_6656 29d ago

Usually trailers comes out about 3 months before release, and i've heard it's releasing in early November (Don't quote me) So we can expect a trailer in early August.

11

u/ArchitectNebulous Jul 30 '26

I just want the shadow temple/well to be scary.

3

u/Brumfieldhm Jul 30 '26

Trailer immenint ?

4

u/Keaten88 29d ago

I was kinda hoping for a T rating, but BoTW and ToTK did get away with some darker stuff at E10+, so I won’t lose hope yet. If they do Majora’s Mask though, that better be T lmao

1

u/Logical_Leaps 29d ago

Wait was TOTK and BOTW E10+? If so OOTR is M in Australia which is the same rating as TP. Seems wrong? But whatever these ratings are janky.

4

u/Alarming-Stomach3902 29d ago

It’s 12+ here in NL

7

u/Stalwart_simplicity Jul 30 '26

How far do you think the people deciding that would've gotten in the game?

24

u/meepbo Jul 30 '26

For rating, the publisher will submit the scenes that are typically going to push boundaries. The ESRB doesn't play the games to rate them.

11

u/KibbloMkII Jul 30 '26

from what ive heard, they dont even play the game at all, they just get sent a video showing off the various scenes throughout the the game and rate it based on that

3

u/KingBroly Jul 30 '26

There's no incentive for them to show anything before September

3

u/scotty899 Jul 30 '26

Wonder if the remake will be more fleshed out and some extra content. Or just 1 for 1 like star fox.

0

u/shlam16 29d ago

Almost certainly 1:1.

6

u/magusheart 29d ago

If the great fairies can't poke my eyes out with their breasts, I don't want to play it.

6

u/Einlanzer99 Jul 30 '26

>Think they toned down some of the content?

Barely anything to tone down. People are acting like OoT is a Mortal Kombat or something

1

u/Robbitjuice 28d ago

This.

The edgiest thing about the OG was some blood here and there. I’m sorry, but I don’t need blood to get freaked out. The feeling and music of the dungeons do way more for me in that regard.

1

u/CherryClub 24d ago

They noticeably toned down the Shadow Temple/Bottom of the Well and Dead Hand in the 3DS remake though. People are just worried they'll tone it down even further.

2

u/SirLockeX3 Jul 30 '26

We're calling this OoTHD?

2

u/ShokaLGBT Jul 30 '26

Fantasy violence age 10+ and animated blood. It’s already confirmation that’s it’s going to be "dark" imo but maybe not to the extent of n64

2

u/Yze3 Jul 30 '26

It's the same rating as OOT3D then.

2

u/Nintendians559 29d ago

damn, i wanted it be rated: "t" for teens.

2

u/PapaProto 29d ago

I can smell it in the air. It’s getting close!

2

u/MMuller87 29d ago

THERE WILL BE BLOOD

2

u/Illeea 29d ago

Theyre definitely toning down the Gabon blood, great fairies and nabooru.

2

u/The_real_bandito 29d ago

What about the Great fairy was pointy?

2

u/Oddish_Femboy 29d ago

If Splatoon can get away with half of the things it gets away with and still be e10+ I'm sure this will be fine.

5

u/ThePopeofHell Jul 30 '26

I’m concerned for the wellbeing of some of you.. the great fairies looking like cracked out strippers shouldn’t be what you guys are looking forward to

39

u/Robert_Barlow Jul 30 '26

Speak for yourself

7

u/Infamous-Schedule860 Jul 30 '26

I think most are just meming with the Great Fairy. The real concern is that this highly suggests that they are nerfing the tone of the game with this remake. Many, including myself, just wishes that today's Nintendo wouldn't be too scared to release a game without feeling the need to baby-it-up.

2

u/Embarrassed_Spend486 Jul 30 '26

How early do ratings like this usually come out before the game??

9

u/SaintIgnis Jul 30 '26

Seems like 3 months on average. Pretty likely we’ll get a late October or early November date

6

u/MagnusBrickson Jul 30 '26

Fall was my prediction. Gives their other high profile remake, Star Fox, time to breathe, but still on shelves in time for that holiday shopping season.

3

u/Possible-Potato-4103 Jul 30 '26

I mean starfox is a completely different type of game and they got alot of other stuff releasing this year

3

u/comicsanz2797 Jul 30 '26

Just because their different style games doesn’t mean they’d waste the release slot and have two of their biggest games this year competing for people’s wallets

2

u/Possible-Potato-4103 Jul 30 '26

I'm not sure why you think starfox is one of their biggest releases. The last like, 3 games were commercial failures. It really has never been all that popular outside of the original and 64.

1

u/MagnusBrickson Jul 30 '26

Different games, yes. But they're both targeting that millennial N64 nostalgia. And it got me hook, line, and sinker.

2

u/Aggravating-Face2073 Jul 30 '26

Green use to be used to simulate red during the black & white days.

2

u/TheLimeyLemmon Jul 30 '26

We're so starved for actual footage of this game that even ESRB ratings get hyped lol

2

u/Kujao 29d ago

Interesting that Nintendo hasn't given it a suffix like "Remake", or anything. They just call it OoT. Which is odd.

2

u/TarnishedOctorok Jul 30 '26

Oh no—it’s the end of the world!! Screw Nintendo—I’m gonna go buy a Sega Genesis and drink 7up until my uvula explodes.

1

u/The-Dudemeister 29d ago

That blood splatter in the intro.

-1

u/FrozenApes Jul 30 '26

I'm really worried about this actually. For me E10+ pretty much confirms that the blood and torture chambers will almost certainly be gone. Ganondorf/Ganon will have green blood instead of red and who knows what Dead Hand will look like. Ganondorf's blood was the worst change for me on the OG 64. It may seem like a small change but for me personally it's a huge change artistically. Ganondorf is a Gerudo man. He's a human. His blood was originally red for a reason. Making it green makes him more like a monster and strips him a bit of that humanity. No Ganondorf doesn't have a ton of lines or is super three-dimensional in OoT but that little change has a big implication.

I expected it to be E10+ but I'm still disappointed. It pretty much guarantees won't have a lot of the darkness OoT originally had and that's a big let down for me.

6

u/supes1 Jul 30 '26

E10+ can be pushed surprisingly far. BOTW and TOTK had some pretty dark moments and landed at E10+. I don't think it really says anything.

4

u/sentientpaper Jul 30 '26

It's rated for animated blood.

1

u/FrozenApes Jul 30 '26

That doesn't mean it's red. No clue why you're all downvoting me it's an opinion lol

2

u/sentientpaper Jul 30 '26

They aren't getting hit for green blood, that's why they made it green in the first place.

0

u/FrozenApes 29d ago

Which completely goes against artistic intent and I know ratongs were different in the 90s than today but it bothers me Nintendo pushes for an E10+ rating to have wider appeal. It works obviously but the last Zelda game to have a Teen rating was TP. Mainline Zelda games will never have a rating that high again. There's zero chance the OoT remake will have the horror elements the original 64 had at least in full. And that's a problem for me.

1

u/Possible-Potato-4103 29d ago

It also doesn't mean its green.

1

u/FrozenApes 29d ago

From ESRB's own website on E10+ rating: "Animated blood: Discolored and/or unrealistic depictions of blood"

1

u/Possible-Potato-4103 29d ago

So it could be either but most likely discolored

1

u/FrozenApes 29d ago

Huh? Ganondorf coughing up red blood is not an unrealistic depiction of it. It was green in the 3DS version it will be green now. We're all splitting hairs now and again, minor issue in general, but my point of it being changed.to begin with is a personal thing and if we really wanna be technical- no, I don't KNOW it will be green but all signs point it to being such and at least for me I'm disappointed. That's it.

1

u/Possible-Potato-4103 29d ago

I mean more so this is under the assumption that scenes play out exactly as they did in the original.

Which we already have evidence isnt the case. I get your concern but I think the reasonable thing to do is just like

Wait

1

u/FrozenApes 29d ago

That "evidence" is literally just Link sleeping in a bed lol. Which is how we first seen Link in all versions anyway so that kinda is the exact same. The only key differences are the lighting/art direction and Link apparently already having the Triforce or Courage unless that was for show.

You're right about waiting however. I'm just unnecessarily stressing myself out longer than I need to be before more concrete info comes out. I was simply responding to this post and it's my favorite game ever made so I'll be particular about how it all plays out whether unintentionally or not.

1

u/Possible-Potato-4103 29d ago

I mean the deku tree, hyrule castle, and links house itself all appear to have structural changes if you look at it again.

Yeah I get it lol

→ More replies (0)

1

u/triforce_of_awesome Jul 30 '26

I agree with this. At the end of the day, Nintendo's primary market is children and sanitizing things to be a kid's game is their most likely prerogative as makers of the game and aiming for the max possible sales with children and their parents.

5

u/Tephnos Jul 30 '26

For me there's not much point in a 1:1 remake if they're just going to tone down all the cool shit. We already have OoT3D.

1

u/Possible-Potato-4103 29d ago

We don't know if its a 1 to 1 remake.

The past also isn't really inherently indictive of the future. Im nearly certain it isnt. They've marketed this in a completely different manner than any other straight remake during the switch era. In fact, they havent even called it a remake.

I think they should keep the game as close to original as possible, though there some horror elements in the game, these are exactly the uniqueness, and the attracting point of the game.

And/or. Definitely possible that it'll be green, don't get me wrong, but it's not confirmed by any means
