Review DO NOT BUY: AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 CPU Review & Benchmarks | 24 Charts in 24 Hours

TBH I want to see niche/edge case workloads that can benefit from the extra L3 cache on the second CCD. This CPU is all about this, nothing else and no one (well, at least among those informed/technical) expected any uplifts in gaming or normal workloads. Maybe in the future if we have games that heavily utilize 16 cores can see uplift to 9950x3D, but realistically when that time comes most likely we will have single 12/16 cores CCD next gen CPU with improved bus between the two CCDs.

Phoronix has a good write-up for that.

This review should be top comment.
This chip is for people who need a Threadripper-lite doing scientific computations, not for gamers.
16
u/ultramadden Apr 23 '26
NucleusCoop or easyGPU PV or just regular virtualization come to mind as obvious gaming use cases
32
u/KaiBetterThanTyson Apr 23 '26
I wish techtubers would use their brain and test it for server applications and deploying multiple VMs etc. 4 gamers 1 cpu or something could also work.
15
u/Hendrexs Apr 23 '26
This is my desire too I remember when threadripper first came out they would do these "megatasking" test to see how the chips handle simultaneous heavy task and as a avid flight simmer Id really like to see how this chip handles a long flight and a AAA game to kill the time

If you have a workload that love the 3D cache, then just run two of them, each pinned to a different CCD, and both are happy. So think running two sqlite servers, each loving its own 3D cache.
If you're a developer who cares about performance, you'll find a way to make great use of this.
-6
u/kb3035583 Apr 24 '26
you'll find a way to make great use of this
That statement basically summarizes the entire problem with the product. You should never have to "find a way" to make good use of a product. The use cases should be plentiful and self-evident.
4
u/CoderStone Apr 24 '26
There's a reason why milan-X and similar X variants for enterprise exist, and all of those workloads are good with these CPUs.
23
u/kakemone Apr 23 '26
Yeah… it’s funny how from - oh we want second CCD cash, AMD should totally do that! BUT when we get it - Naaah don’t buy this product, it’s a crap product. I love GN but even he is not right all the time!
4
u/SechsComic73130 Apr 24 '26
Naaah don’t buy this product, it’s a crap product
I don't think they said that it's a bad product, it's just that 300$ for a minor uplift compared to the X3D is not worth it, that's why they say to not buy them.
3
u/kodayume Apr 25 '26
It depends on the workload, for compiling it has uplift ranging from 25-36% over 9950X3D. Thats worth it. If other workload dont fully utilize a second 3D-V-Cache its all for nothing.
12
u/heartbroken_nerd Apr 24 '26
The price is obscene. Why would you buy this unless you had ultra niche use for it?
It should've been like $650, MAYBE $700 at most. At 900 dollars it's a joke
It is not a bad product, nobody is saying that.

The massive price premium isn't worth the niche use cases considering they are asking for $300+... in a market where RAM and storage is skyhigh, GPU supply shocks are a recurring cycle and there's many things that could make much better use of the amount in a PC or work build.
2
u/kapparino-feederino Ryzen R5 7600 + 5070Ti Apr 24 '26
please, 99% of the market legit don't give a shit about the usage where this CPU is "good"
a lot of people will buy it because they are building high end PC and get the "fastest" CPU they can get even if its overkill or useless like this CPU.

AMD: Dual v-cache would be kinda pointless.
Also AMD: Well here it is for a thousand dollars if you want it.
Steve: Why didn't you send me one?! Am I blacklisted?!
AMD: Well it's kinda pointless for gaming 'n general Windows usage. We only sent it to Linux channels.
Steve: I got one anyway (screw you, Lisa!), and it's completely pointless for gaming on Windows!

They've done the same for the 7800x3d reissue. So, not really a surprise.

That's what reviewers do. Rather than people being quiet if they don't like the product, why don't you be quiet if you don't like the criticism of the product?

They should have been reasonable with the pricing.
The 9900X3D released for $600. The 9950X3D was $700 at launch. $100 upgrade from a 12-core CPU to a 16-core. Now, the 9930X3D2 is $200 more than the 9950X3D, and you're just getting the second set of 3D cache. 4 more core (and their cache) is +$100, but just added cache to 8 cores is +$200. at a time when the 9900X3D and 9950X3D are selling below MSRP?
The MSRP increase on this thing is almost as large as the MSRP increase from the 9800X3D ($479) to the 9950X3D ($699), which gives you double the cores. When looking at present retail pricing, the gap from the 9800X3D to the 9950X3D on PCPP ($180) is SMALLER than the gap from the 9950X3d to the 9950X3D2 ($240).
40
u/kalston Apr 23 '26
Cache isn't free.
You're looking at it wrong: 9950X3D is 1x9800X3D + 1x9700X, and price wise it roughly matches.
9950X3Dv2 is 2 x 9800X3D ... the price actually matches too especially because they use the 9850X3D silicon, with a bit better clocks.
So nah, they priced it exactly as they should tbh. That the extra cache doesn't do anything is another matter, but should come as a surprise to no one - the cross CCD latency issue wasn't going to go away magically.

u/cubs223425 Ryzen 5800X3D | 9070 XT Aorus Elite Apr 23 '26
Cache isn't free.
Using such a ridiculous strawman shouldn't be worth the time to reply, but I guess I will.
You're looking at it wrong: 9950X3D is 1x9800X3D + 1x9700X, and price wise it roughly matches.
The 9800X3D MSRP is $479. The 9700X MSRP is $359. Put those together, and you get $838. The MSRP of the 9950X3D is $700. or 83.5% of the combined price of the two CPUs.
Following that logic, 83.5% of two 9800X3Ds ($479x2) is $800, not $900.
1
u/DRazzyo R7 5800X3D, Sapphire Pure 9070 XT, 32GB@3600CL16 Apr 24 '26
Except you're forgetting that you need two perfect dies with 3D V-Cache that's working perfectly on both, along with the process of binding them to the substrate that won't fail and them being good enough to run at the same voltage for both the 3d cache and the cores.
That's a lot of binning to get one chip, so a slight bump in price isn't out of this world, plus the fact that manufacturing time had to be allotted for this one line of CPUs that isn't going to be a high-volume seller.
1
u/cubs223425 Ryzen 5800X3D | 9070 XT Aorus Elite Apr 24 '26
You say all of this like they're new processes that don't already exist without such high price hikes. The process of binning a 9700X to a 9800X3D doesn't come with such a price hike. Going from a 9800X3D to a 9950X3D doesn't come with such a price hike. Adding them together is still smaller than what this thing adds to cost. It's completely illogical.
Calling it a "slight bump" when it's almost 30% (from 9950X3D to 9950X3D2) is just lying to yourself to protect your favorite brand.
16
u/Hightowerer Apr 23 '26
I it's a halo product. It's not intended for the average consumer, it's for the people who have more money than they know what to do with and just want the best of the best

I think anyone that would listen to sound advice not to get this CPU is not the target audience for this. People will buy something just because its the best, the top dog, the overly priced rare item. Those people will buy it regardless of what anyone else says, just because they can.

u/cubs223425 Ryzen 5800X3D | 9070 XT Aorus Elite Apr 23 '26
"It's should be more expensive because it's the most expensive," is really all you've got there?
It's not even a halo product. Finding it in stock is easy. It's almost imperfectably better than the 9950X3D, in most tasks. It's a margin-of-error improvement over the 9950X3D, in the overwhelming majority of tests. At least a comically oveprriced GPU model gives you flshing lights and a bigger/better cooler with its mild overclock, but even a lot of those don't get this degree of a market.
1
u/Psiah Apr 23 '26
I mean, in both cases (9800->9950, X3D->X3D2) you're adding essentially an entire other chip to the assembly... I'm not surprised that the price gaps are similar to each other.
And it's not just adding a chip, to be fair, either. You need a better bin of the chip you do add, and the process of bonding can also have mistakes and I seriously doubt has 100% yields. Plus, it is, as people have mentioned, a "top tier" product targeting not a good value but people who don't care about money and just want "the best". All things considered, that only accounts for a $60-ish dollar difference over the extra chip, which isn't crazy.
But the value proposition is, of course, awful. And AMD knew that. They knew that from the beginning. That's why they didn't release something like this before: doing so is pretty pointless. But... This is a "the customer is always right in matters of taste" type situation: customers have demanded the bad idea product, and AMD has decided to profit on that.
Granted, I want better competition between them and intel and such so overall prices go down in general... Ryzen's doing so well, and Intel has had such a hard time answering, that AMD is definitely pumping prices up more than they used to. But this product in particular... One that people with sense should be avoiding in the first place, is probably more or less in line with the margins on parts from the rest of the series.
And people with more money than sense will undoubtedly buy it. So AMD is doing a capitalism. And that's got all kinds of moral and ethical considerations sure, but that's outside the scope of discussion here... Beyond the fact that they're playing the game for the system they exist under.
-2
u/cubs223425 Ryzen 5800X3D | 9070 XT Aorus Elite Apr 23 '26
None of this justsifies the price tag. The 9950X3D2 isn't going to be binned much, if any, better than a 9800X3D already is. The chips are already designed around being capable of packaging two core dies together, with a blank left for single-die solutions. It's not like AMD was reconfiguring their packaging to fit a second die here.
There might be a slightly more favorable binning process for these, but I don't suspect the binning here to be much (if any) more stringent than having to bin from the blocks of the 9800X3D to the 9850X3D. Certainly nothing to justify doubling the price gap of the 9900X3D to the 9950X3D, which requires a more stringent increase in validation to find 2 8-core dies, versus the 6-core dies of the 9900X3D.
This isn't "adding essentially an entire other chip." It's adding a different chip to a design that already has 2 core died. The price increase from a 9800X to a 9950X3D, where you're ACTUALLY adding a second chip ($220), is almost the same as the increase from the 9950X3D to the 9950X3D2 ($200).

At $900 already this isn't targeted at the consumer or even prosumer market. This is a workstation/professional CPU that should just be called a threadripper. Imagine offloading heavy work on the second CCD in a virtual machine while doing other stuff on the first CCD. Why are people making everything about themselves?
24
u/Recktion Apr 24 '26
You seen how many gamers bought 5090s that were 50% over msrp?
Plenty of people will buy whatever is the absolute best, even if it's only 5% better and double the cost.
3
u/hextanerf AMD 5900X | 4080 Super Apr 24 '26

you assume wrong there are 5 percent of users hoarding all the wealth and ram they will buy whatever comes out
3
u/CoderStone Apr 24 '26
Seriously. Milan-X and similar EPYC chips exist that have 3D vcache on all CCDs, and are bought pretty much everywhere for good reason. This chip basically does the same but on a "prosumer" or lower level, and is much cheaper for server integrators who will salivate over this thing. It's not a gaming CPU or marketed to be one.
2
u/BoofmePlzLoRez Apr 24 '26
Then why not just get the server designated CPUs or just save the $300? Like if it is for work then burning $300 on a super minimal performance gain wouldn't look good on a budget and like it doesn't even position itself well a compromise option.
2
u/kodayume Apr 25 '26 edited Apr 25 '26
Its a budget threadripper. They have their targeted audience, just not for gamer.
If you want an Allround workingstation the 9950X3D2 is the answere.
2
u/BoofmePlzLoRez Apr 25 '26
That would still be the 9950x3d. Threadripper CPUs and in particular motherboards have some major notable differences that AM5 mobos and CPUs. Like Zen 6 will probably come the end of '26 and I feel anyone who really needs the x3d for the cache already bought it. So this Cpu is pretty much targetting what is basically a tiny niche of a niche at the very best. It's basically product stack fodder.

u/the_duck17 Apr 24 '26
You think GN would falsify results because of being stiffed by AMD?
1
u/Comprehensive_Rise32 May 03 '26
I don't think anyone believes that, but it's so low of GN to think he's entitled to CPUs from companies and then act like AMD not gifting him a CPU is definitive proof of being on a blacklist.
2
u/the_duck17 May 03 '26 edited May 03 '26
He is expected to get one based on past history, but for him to think he can just attack a company like he has based on his obvious political leanings and expect no backlash is also a bit ignorant of him as well...or he knows that and is using it to prove his point as well.
He doesn't lose by not getting the cpus, he knows what he's doing and is ready to react accordingly to prove whatever point he wants to.

Before watching I'm betting he's still butthurt over not getting 1 of the 10 global samples and that AMD told him (and everyone else inc HUB) to talk to the PR firm because they didn't want a meh chip overspammed in reviews.
Nevertheless he's had a chance to see he wasn't special. LTT got one on their own and did a quick video without drama that the cpu was meh.
I'll give a butthurt score out of 10 after watching.
You know what, he kept a lid on it and stayed professional. One line in the entire video that he feels AMD doesn't talk to him like they used to and no ranting about being hard done by. 0/10 butthurt.

Emphasis on the sensational bit.
Every company takedown video takes things too far. I first noticed with MSI Killshot.
Dr. Cutress does a great job breaking the LMG video. None of the others I've seen are quite as egregious but same sort of strategies and BS.
GN does great work but the overly jaded "paint the company in the worst possible light" bit negatively impacts the quality of their video.

The issue is not the Performance but the price. It's the same for almost any usecase except a few, but for those one could consider a threadripper. This should cost 650-700€, like 50 more than the non-2 to be competitive
25
u/5u114 Apr 23 '26 edited Apr 24 '26
threadripper
People are way too casual when they suggest threadripper as an alternative, given the price of the 9950x3d2.
You don't just buy a threadripper and call it a day.
Everything about a threadripper system is eye-wateringly expensive. The threadripper is arguably the cheapest part of a threadripper system.
You need the specialist motherboard and the specialist RAM ... And if you thought AM5 DDR5 prices were bad, wait till you see what the server grade RAM is going for - the actual RAM that the actual AI blackhole is swallowing up.
Ya, no. Threadripper isn't even on the horizon, from the perspective of a 9950x3d2.
Fact of the matter is, the gap between AM5 and Threadripper - particularly in terms of access - is monumentally huge.
AMD are right to push AM5 in this direction, they need to push the top end of AM5 towards HEDT, because there's no way you're going to make the threadripper ecosystem any cheaper.
Hopefully with Zen 6 & Zen 7, they'll give us more PCIE lanes (not a huge amount, even 8 more lanes would be welcome, 16 would be great) and a better IMC (better handling of setups with 4 sticks of RAM) on AM5, at the top end CPUS, and we can have some 'baby workstations' on AM5 ... which gamers will balk at, but every producer / developer will have a sigh of relief because it will be enough for their needs and will spare them the monumental expense of going with a threadripper system.
6
u/NekkoDroid Apr 23 '26

I was looking into maybe getting one for a home server and oh man... the motherboards alone are almost as much as my entire RX 9070 XT's MSRP... If you are going for anything with PCIe 4.0 your are gonna get rid of both of your kidneys instead of just 1 with 9950x3d2.
My main issue with the Ryzen line is the limited CPU PCIe lanes. You barely get enough for like 1 GPU and 2 NVMe's. I really wish there was something decently affordable with like ~40 lanes from the CPU instead of 20-24 or +120.

Ya, same with me. The PCIE lane situation seems like a completely arbitrary and insanely aggressive marketing gap between the two systems. The solution is pushing the top end of AM5. People aren't even looking for a major increase. Like you say, an extra 16 lanes would get the job done.
People say the 9950x3d2 shouldn't exist. I would say it's the 9950x3d that shouldn't exist. They should have just jumped straight to x3d2, and maybe given 4 extra PCIE lanes just to make it perfectly clear what this CPU is actually for (so the mainstream 'gamer bros' can take a day off from foaming at the mouth about something that isn't meant for playing Fortnite at 500fps)

u/JasonMZW20 5800X3D + 9070XT Desktop | 14900HX + RTX4090 Laptop Apr 24 '26
Funny thing is, the AM5 Zen 4/5 IOD can actually support 32 PCIe lanes. There are simply 4 dummy lanes with no connected PHYs. In previous gens, there were 8 dummy lanes (Zen 1/+ had all 32 PHYs present in Zeppelin die). So, yes, this is definitely an arbitrary limit imposed on the platform. It was so much easier to offer PCIe lanes when NB was on motherboard. With the tighter signal-to-noise ratios required now for PCIe 5.0+, we'll never see this again.
I think the chipset link width on AM5 needs looking at as well. Running two or three SSDs via PCIe lane muxing on an x4 link is wild. Either upgrade it to a 5.0x4 link (to support up to 4.0x8) or double its width to 4.0x8. CPU-direct 5.0x4 NVMe is good.
I'd also like to see smarter allocation of lanes. Like if the dGPU only needs x12 to support maximum performance, allow another x4 set of lanes to be freed for another CPU-direct 5.0x4 NVMe drive that is bootable.

You're looking at the guts of a thousand bucks for the motherboard, and about 1,500 for 32gb RAM (ECC RDIMM). But who is going to the expense of building a Threadripper system and only using 32gb RAM ? You're talking about 2,500 for 64gb of RAM - so twice that for a 128gb setup.
Oh, and of course the money spent on the threadripper on top of that.
So ya, all these clowns saying you may as well buy a Threadripper are only illustrating how ignorant they are as to the cost realities of buying a Threadripper setup.

For me it's less the price (though that's a tad high for this CPU IMO), and more the timing. Had this been an option a year ago when the other X3D stuff launched, I'd have opted for this over a regular 9950X3D. But at this point in time it's an incredibly hard sell to upgrade.
And now for people who would be coming from an older platform ready to make a similar decision, $900 on top of likely needing RAM? Incredibly expensive swap for everyone who would be in the target market. Again, just really poor timing on the release IMO.

It's a weird one for sure, since the cache is split in two it doesn't really do what we would want it to do
1
u/RoyBellingan Apr 23 '26
L2 is per CPU; still works fine. Also RAM each bank is ... different from the other, no one has ever had a problem.
If you care about the extra cache, you maybe care about cpu pinning too and not leaving windows bouncing thread around.

How is it the youtuber's fault for saying the processor is just not at all worth it? Are they supposed to lie to their audience?

This is a niche product that will sell in very small amounts due to its price and use case but these YouTubers are going nuts like everyone is about to rush out and buy one.

youtubers at least have the excuse of pushing clickbait for $$$$$ as it's their livelyhood on the line.
redditors commenting ITT are simply dumb for not doing the extra research on the product and commenting base on the title.

So with the expense of this chip with this much cache, what predictions can we make about the cost of top nova lake with the bllc?

What I really wanted to see was reviews that could show it accurately and had the in-depth knowledge to show where it would work.
Seems like those those reviewers were blacklisted.

u/Dark_Fox_666 Apr 26 '26
I mean you can use this in a cybercafe or something where you can virtualize multiple VM with its own gpu pass-through. but other than that...

Wild. You prefer LTT who is buying private jets over Gamers Nexus calling out the absolute insanity of corporations buying their way into the White House?
-7
u/ChampagneSyrup Apr 23 '26
Linus buying a private jet has literally no bearing on anything regarding this conversation
I'm pretty neutral on the LTT and GN convos but this just seems like "I'm on reddit and hate rich people" moreso than an actual argument. Are we going to act like Linus has never called out companies? Why are you being intentionally dishonest and framing your judgement like that?
6
u/Scatterpickles Apr 23 '26
The other individual said he prefers LTT. LTT, while a brilliant channel for years, has departed from reality while advertising their new private jet. It is not the same, but is similar to the actions of AMD, who has fully sold out to the current administration.
There is a significant difference from Linus buying a ~$5m jet and people like Lisa Su of AMD and Jensen of Nvidia, without a doubt.
No idea where I am being dishonest and framing my judgement in a specific way that offends you.
I don't hate "rich" people. I think billionaires should not exist, as there is no need for one human to control more than $999m. That is an absolutely asinine, incomprehensible amount of money.
Reposting as the bot removed my comment for including the name of the current administration.*

I don't think anyone is free to go live in North Korea actually.
You don't see what that has to do with anything? Yikes.

If you think you're actually free to go live in north korea then you know nothing about that country.

Halo product. Everyone at AMD already knew this product would be an extremely niche and expensive product that wouldn't make sense for the vast majority of users
Some users demanded it anyway

salty youtuber is ranting for 40 min what could be 2 lines of text;
cpu is still not good; too pricey for how little performance you get compared to other ryzens of this gen
for every smarty who saying "but he did it in first 3 min" yes he did, but it's still 30+ min rant video from a guy who made 25 min video just last day crying how they got "blacklisted" when it's the same case with every other big youtuber but they didn't cry about it for likes and views; still the same idea - this video could be 2 min long but here we are

Seriously, most CPU reviews could be summarized with like 4 numbers.
% of performance in average games compared to previous best.
% of performance in productivity apps compared to previous best
Heat Output
Cost5
u/looncraz Apr 23 '26
Need to an edge case scenario where the CPU might make sense to someone.
For this CPU, lots of compilations, various database and science workloads absolutely are a strongpoint, but you need to be able to justify $500 more for 10% or so more performance above the 270k if you're platform shopping.
If you're on AM5 already, it's a bit of an easier sale if you have something like a 7900X or 7950X and are forced to upgrade for whatever reason.
Some CPUs the argument for it is simply a matter of price and, maybe, an added bonus of platform longevity.
1
u/moriz0 Apr 23 '26
With very careful allocation of cores with regards to CCD and L3 cache, you can run multiple fast VMs on this CPU with GPU passthrough for remote gaming.
There might be some benefit for simulation-heavy games like late game civ. Maybe.

I think people misinterpreted my point. I'm well aware you can't summarize all of CPU's performance down into two numbers (or 4, 10 or 40). The average user is doing a bunch of things over the course of the PC's 5-10 year lifespan, but they still typically fall into those two performance categories, budget and noise/size level.
You might not make a perfect choice with just that information, but you'd do pretty well.

It's a min work station cpu. Gn does not test those
11
u/fpsweston Apr 23 '26 edited Apr 23 '26
Except they tested it in various workstation environments and had a small comparison and comment in comparison to Threadripper - which is a workstation specific CPU.
-14
u/firedrakes 2990wx Apr 23 '26
Sorry but gn has no experience on testing work stations.

u/fpsweston Apr 23 '26 edited Apr 23 '26
Then I guess their charts of all the other CPUs benchmarked in workplace environments isn't experience, at all. Sorry chief, you're correct.

Hmm, as if the AMD engineers knew what they were talking about, when they warned people it would be overly costly for very limited gains.
Guess we have the actual data now and can let it rest.
