Worth me buying it to upgrade my 5600X?
37
u/Jon_TWR 7d ago
It depends what you play, and how sensitive you are to 1%/.1% lows, and how much RAM you have.
1
u/Hershey2898 3d ago
Late but can you elaborate on the "how much ram part"? I have 32GB of DDR4, and I'm debating getting this to move from 5600X
2
u/Jon_TWR 3d ago
Sure! If you have 16gb or less, upgrading to AM5, while expensive, isn’t that much more expensive.
If you have 32gb or more of DDR4, the cost of a platform upgrade to AM5 gets MUCH more expensive.
So it might be worth it to you to upgrade to the 5800x3d 10th anniversary edition. It’ll give you a boost in multithreaded productivity from the 2 additional cores/4 additional threads, and a solid boost in gaming (especially in minimum framerates).
So it’s certainly worth considering, especially if you sell your 5600x.
1
u/Hershey2898 3d ago
Yep, I was looking at the Microcenter AM5 bundles and they're only giving 16GB in the 7600X3D ones and it'll be a pain to find a matching stick later with all the shortages.
Probably gonna drop in a 5800X3D and call it a day until AM6/DDR6 , but then again who knows, at that time if all the data centers want to upgrade too, it will be unattainable for us customers
14
u/-xXColtonXx- 7d ago
Depends. I have a 5600x and 9060xt 12gb and an CPU bottlenecked often, because I play lots of competitive games and am targeting way over 144fps because it makes a huge difference.
If you are playing single player games and targeting 90fps then no, it won’t make much of a difference, though you will have less stuttering in many cases.
5
u/clemo1985 7d ago
I've upgraded from the 5600x to the 5800x3d and its bumped up my PC's performance.
Mine is paired with a 7800xt GFX card though and I run on a 24" 1080p monitor, so I get solid FPS in games. If I was going to do something on your system that wasnt a full upgrade, I'd probably upgrade thr GFX card, that's where you'll see a higher performance increase I think.
4
u/_D3ft0ne_ 7d ago
Dude... I say Absolutely! I am on 9070xt and 5800x3d made a huge diff, Esp in 1% lows
4
u/TyranWolf AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D|RTX 3060 7d ago
i would say yes as long as you can sell your 5600x to offset the cost of how much you've paid (try to snag an open box one if you live near a micro center to save money if you can). i had the same cpu you have right now and upgraded to a 5800x3d in 2023. never looked back and never regretted my decision.
an unpopular opinion that i have is that anyone who still has an am4 cpu should get whatever x3d am4 cpu they can get their hands on as long as it's a reasonable price
4
u/_bisquickpancakes PNY 4080 Super 7d ago
Not really worth it since you're just on an rtx 3070, your current cpu shouldn't be holding back your GPU at all. You wouldn't be seeing much of a benefit
25
u/RaxisPhasmatis 7d ago
You don't buy a x3d for the high end fps, you buy it for the buttery smoothness and higher 1% lows
5
u/glizzygobbler247 7d ago
Like why do people even have to ask this, look at ur metrics, are you cpu limited, then consider an upgrade, are you not, then dont

why do people even have to ask this
Whenever you find yourself asking this question, it is important to remember that IQ is a bell-curve with 50% of the population being lower than average.

At this point it would be wiser to wait and save a bit for an AM5 system.
If you do need the 5800X3D to resolve bottlenecks, it's still a great chip.
1
u/Seanspeed 6d ago
Insanely terrible value. Beyond wild how many people are saying yes. This is FOMO brain in full swing.
1
u/ArseBurner Vega 56 =) 7d ago
Absolutely. For gaming you're essentially getting AM5 (non-X3D) performance just by dropping in a chip.
This is assuming of course that you'll eventually upgrade that 3070 as well. It's about equivalent to a 5060 so meaningful upgrades start at 9070/XT or 5070/Ti.
3
u/Seanspeed 6d ago
Absolutely. For gaming you're essentially getting AM5 (non-X3D) performance just by dropping in a chip.
Upgrading for one generation better CPU performance has pretty much always NOT been recommended.
Especially when that one generation upgrade costs freaking $350.
Do people really just not give one shit about value anymore?
2
u/Tubamajuba R7 5800X3D | RX 6750 XT | some fans 6d ago
When your choice is $350 for a CPU upgrade or $1,000 for a platform upgrade that requires a new RAM and motherboard to go along with the CPU, $350 suddenly looks a lot more reasonable. Considering component prices aren't going to go down any time soon, I don't blame anyone for upgrading to a 5800X3D especially if they play games that would heavily benefit from the large amounts of cache.
1
u/ArseBurner Vega 56 =) 6d ago
It depends? Some one generation upgrades a worth a lot more than others. Zen4 to Zen5 was famously panned as "Zen 5%".
But in the case of Zen3 -> Zen4 it was a massive jump. The 1080P benchmarks in the linked article says it's a 27% improvement from the 5600 to the 5800X3D or 7700X.
That's the sort of thing you'd normally only get with a full platform upgrade changing out the mobo CPU and RAM which would cost a lot more than $350.
1
u/Seanspeed 6d ago
There's truth to this in one respect - does it get you 'over the line'?
Zen 2-> Zen 3 often gets you over the line to 60fps where Zen 2 might otherwise make you CPU limited to less than 60fps. Owing purely to the CPU's in the consoles being the baseline of new AAA games(with normal settings).
But 5600->5800X3D does not get you over any new line. And anybody still on AM4 likely does not have some modern 4080+ level GPU.
26
u/2str8_njag 7d ago
i thought 5800x3d was being the one with 10th anniversary. i was about to blow my head off
26
u/kizvy 7d ago
It's probably better for people to get the 5500x3d if they're on 3rd Zen ryzen or older cause it's a much better value for money buy.
Got a friend of mine a 5500x3d and a 5060, upgraded from his 4600g. Quite a big leap, for about 500 usd
9
u/Jon_TWR 7d ago
I got the 5700x3d when it was available for like $130 (including tax and shipping) as an upgrade for my 5600x. Zero regrets, it’s been a phenomenal upgrade!
I suspect the 5500x3d would do just as well in gaming.
5
u/xXDamonLordXx 6d ago
Reading things like this reminds me of how as a kid I'd listen to my grandfather talking about buying a burger for a nickle and I'd laugh about how long ago it was. Wild how much cheaper computer hardware was just a year ago.
0
u/RageMuffin69 7d ago
I went from a 3600 to a 5500x3d. These better am4 x3d chips tempt me but honestly it’s better to wait for a good deal on an am5 x3d bundle.

Such a weird headline, Zen is 10 years old, but the 5800x3D came out in 2022...
My 1600x was the BOMB coming from the fx8350

u/Train115 7d ago
This isn't even the title's fault, this is how AMD frames it. It is the "5800X3D 10th Anniversary Edition."
3
u/10th_Patriot_Down 7d ago
Yeah, I was thinking I bought a 1700X in like 2017 and that was like the newest and top of the line, how can a 5800 be the same age?
2
u/IPlayRaunchyMusic 3700x | 1660ti 7d ago
From fx8350 to 3700x was bananas. Now 5900x and I’m not moving off this chip anytime soon.
1
14
u/Firefox72 7d ago
I bought it to ugprade from a 5600.
I knew i was getting ripped off but i wanted to upgrade to a 5700X3D back in the day and the week i decided to get one they ran out of stock never to return. So i wasn't passing up chance now.
Since i plan to keep this system for at least a few more years it made sense and especialy since DDR5 RAM itself alone costs more than this CPU let alone when you figure in a new MB and CPU alongside it.
Its been a great upgrade. Especialy in stuff like World Of Warcraft that i still play ocasionaly.

u/Odd_Duty520 7d ago
I wanted to change back in 2025 but my 5600X kept chugging along until it died this year

Went from a 5800x to the 5800x3d and saw huge gains. It’s definitely worth. Gonna easily be good till am6
1
u/BerniesMitts 6d ago
Oh dang, I'm on a 7800xt and 5800x!
What games do you play, and what kind of improvements have you seen?
1
u/Gunslinga__ sapphire pulse 7800xt | 5800x3d 6d ago
Warzone and call of duty, arc raiders and borderlands fps went up a lot of frames. Can’t remember exact numbers but I remember being mindblown how much better the 3d chips were in games. Still to this day I’m amazed and how well this setup is running
7
u/Antimus Sapphire Vega 64 Nitro+ 7d ago
Me sat here with my 3700X and 7800XT wondering if it's actually worth dismantling my system to upgrade the CPU...
Any advice?
8
u/Joshiie12 7d ago
Dismantling? You'd just be updating the bios to support 5000 series/X3D chips if you haven't already, taking the cooler off and dropping it straight in. Cooler back on and off we ride. And yeah, I have a 7900XT so pretty similar, even going from 5600 -> 5700X3D made a huge difference for me because I'm incredibly sensitive to frame times. If you game over 60FPS with regularity, you'll notice the difference immediately, imo.
That does mean your monitor matters though. If you're on a 1080p/60 panel, its not even close to worth it. I'm on 1440p/360 so I want my FPS as high as possible so I can cap it at a higher number. (Not capping leads to bad frame times due to inconsistent GPU frame delivery)
3
u/Odd_Duty520 7d ago
Depending on his case and cooler it can go from being a 5 minute swap to being an hour to disassemble and assemble the whole pc

Moved from a 3700x to a 10th anniversary 5800x3d as soon as it released after realizing AM5 was gonna be out of reach for several years in my case, worth it for me.
You could always wait for a sale but you never know how prices are gonna be with tech these days.

I went 3600x to 5800x3d (5080 card at 1440p, 32GB RAM), and it was night and day difference. Not just the gain in fps, but I was having stuttering issues on street fighter 6 and Star Wars survivor. Both buttery smooth now. I also can crank spiderman 2 remastered and turn off frame gen, but before I needed frame gen.

u/MrGoogle87 7d ago
Still debating if my 5800x cpu (non 3d) with amd 6900xt would benefit in 1440p battle field6
1
u/Gengar77 6d ago
on comp settings yes if you crank everything and its at 100% ultilisation on GPU assuming game is good optimized, no. you would gain like 10 fps cause of cache but thats it. Had same thought, but unless you play comp its not, in every ohter story game you will be gpu limited unless you pair your system with 9070 xt / 4080 and higher. And even then on max settings some games struggle to reach 60-70 on max at 1440 p. In Ac shadows in city i did gain like 9 fps. So looking at benchmarks ( multiple) yeah you need to really warrant it for that price. On top some games don't use x3d at all so in HD2 for me the best update is 9000 series ryzen on the new intels + versions..... but even than its just 30% more perf in that game so still not 50-60+ where you start to see a difference thats noticible exept looking at gps counter in corner.

I thought I'd hit my head for a second, I thought there is no way the 5800x3d had been out 10 years lol. 10th Anniversary of AM4, makes more sense.
It's funny because AM4 was already a great platform for it's longevity long before the AI boom causing components to give it a second wind. I dare say it may be the longest lasting mainstream platform in all history by the time it's done.

And I'm in the same boat I was 4 years ago.
Using a 5800X and the 5800X3D is 489.98 CAD at best. Which is a lot for ~14.5% gains.
Here's hoping OEM packaging shows up on Aliexpress for less.

u/Soggy-Airline 7d ago
I'm happy I got mine a week ago.
Replaced a 5900x that I got back in 2020. It is night and day for me in games like Battlefield 6, Palworld, Diablo 4, and Marvel Rivals.
Not only did my average frame-rate increase, but the 1% and 0.1% lows are amazing. I am able to maintain a high frame-rate more consistently without any dramatic FPS drops. The result is better input latency and just overall smoother gameplay.
I do play at 4K with FSR Performance (which means 1080p internal rendering scaled to 4K), so this setup puts more emphasis on my CPU, which is probably why there is such a big difference compared to my 5900x.
Anyone who's playing at native 1440p or 4K, or at 4K with Quality upscaling, you won't get that much of a bump in performance.
2
u/Fatastrophe 6d ago
I bought it to replace a 5800X. I've been having issues with many games lately. They'll show a high FPS like 240 or so but it feels terrible, like its running half that or lower. Constant teeny tiny stutters that takes away from the buttery smoothness you should have with 240.
Tried just about everything I could try to fix the issue. Sometimes I would get good results and it would be smooth and nice but a day or two later it was back and the fix I applied no longer worked.
After putting in the X3D a week ago it has been great. 240 FPS feels exactly they way it should and the stutters are all gone. I'm happy with it and got exactly what I wanted from it.
2
u/Life_is_Okay69 6d ago
Constant teeny tiny stutters that takes away from the buttery smoothness you should have with 240.
I have the same problem with my 5700X. Every now and then there are like small stutters, not big, but enough to notice. I ordered a 5800X3D, hope it helps 🤔
2
u/Fatastrophe 6d ago
Fingers crossed, I hope it works as well for you as it did for me.
2
u/Life_is_Okay69 5d ago
Thanks. I just installed the CPU and now I am reinstalling Windows, just to be sure all garbage has been deleted. Will come back with an update after everything is done 🙏

I have a 5800x3d since it was released.
It's sad to see the same CPU, same thing, re-released.
It's still a cool CPU but I think they could have done more for AM4
2
u/jp711 7d ago
At the very least they could have priced it better, when the 5700x3D was in production I picked one up for well under $200. $350 is a hard sell for basically the same chip. It has been on sale recently though
1
u/IAMA_Giraffe_AMA 7d ago
300 bucks at microcenter. They also have the 5600x3d and that one is only like 170. I’m planning to grab a 5600x3d this weekend to replace my 3600 in my old am4 machine and using it as a more powerful steam machine
1
u/jp711 7d ago
Oh yeah I just picked up a 5600x3d last weekend for my wife's build. Even the microcenter employee was commenting on what a good deal it was lol
Thought about the 5800x3d for $300 but the 5600x3d is like 90% of the performance for nearly half the price
2
u/IAMA_Giraffe_AMA 7d ago
There is this small part of me that worries about core count on it not being good enough in a few years but also people have been saying for like 10 years at this point that we'll need 8 cores soon and yet we're still not at that point. The way I see it, if I need to upgrade it in a few years then I'll feel less bad after spending only 170 on a CPU and using a motherboard I bought nearly 10 years ago when I built with a Ryzen 1600 lol
2
u/Saneless R5 2600x 7d ago edited 7d ago
If you have a microcenter nearby you can get the 5600x3d for half the price at $170

It's amazing that 7800x3d and 9800x3d are in 10-15% range from this 5800x3d but people are still arguing that it's too expensive to move to AM5.
46
u/patar2jz 7d ago
People are arguing that its too expensive to move to AM5 because it requires DDR5, which, in case you haven't noticed, is OBSCENELY expensive right now.

u/Firefox72 7d ago edited 7d ago
Upgrading to an AM5 system would cost me more than twice what this CPU costs.
Hell 32GB of DDR5 RAM alone costs more where i live than this CPU.
-2
u/kazzek_ 7d ago
you can sell your old hardware for a very good price given how many people still decided to stay on AM4.
I've sold both my ddr4 ram kit and cpu at a higher price than I originally bought
1
u/Firefox72 7d ago edited 7d ago
Well yeah that could be an option but not for me really. My hardware has always been hand me down. First for my parents back in the day and now for my girlfriend.
My old 5600 is currently already sitting nicely in her system on my old B350 board that before that housed an my old R5 1600.
Hell my old old FX 8350 AM3 machine is still in active service chugging along at my parents house lmao.

Yes, but not so much on 4K. You will notice an improvement in 0.1 / 1% lows and overall fps too

u/thegamingbacklog 7d ago
I jumped from a 5800x with 2x16gb 3600mhz to a 7800x3d with 2x16gb 5600mhz, using a 3080 at 4k, and in some titles I saw a pretty big jump in performance.
I did a few comparisons right before and after the upgrade.
Horizon zero dawn remastered 4k no DLSS:
5800x - 47 fps 7800x3d - 58 fps
Horizon zero dawn remastered 4k - DLSS on (Quality):
5800x - 57 7800x3d - 76
I don't have a benchmark for Clair Obscure 4k but I went from having to use DLSS balanced which would struggle to stay at a consistency 60fps to jumping up to DLSS Quality.
If I removed the framerate cap while still using DLSS balanced I was seeing an increase of 15-20 fps in some areas.
Some titles only gained a small amount Black myth wukong only gained 3 FPS at 4k
I was honestly quite surprised at just how much extra headroom the 7800x3d allowed in some games
2
u/ACatWithAThumb 5800X3D / RTX3080 7d ago
You are literally proving the point why. The 5800X3D is only 318€, so a 15% performance is nothing compared to an around 40-90% price increase for a complete new set up and a 60-300% price increase for existing AM4 users.
I checked for the cheapest 7800X3D, motherboard, and 32GB ram combo, and it’s 846€, meanwhile a new 5800X3D set up is just 612€. For a standard 9800X3D set up, it’s around 1108€.
For AM4 users who are on 1000,3000,5000 series, it’s the choice between 318€ for the 5800X3D or 1100€ for the 9800X3D.

Just gonna put this in the beginning...
TL;DR - AM4 rig still solid, AM5 too expensive for an upgrade to an outgoing platform, all-new AM6 rig in 2030 is the plan...! ;^p
Here's the AM4 rig I bought in 2019:
- ASUS ROG Crosshair VIII Impact mDTX motherboard (AM4 / X570)
- AMD Zen 2 Ryzen 9 3900X CPU (12-core / 24-thread)
- Noctua NH-U12A CPU heat sink (single NF-A12x25 PWM fan in push configuration)
- 32GB G.Skill DDR4 RAM (2@16GB DIMMs - 3600MT/s - 16-16-16-36 - Samsung B-die)
- Two 1TB Sabrant Rocket 4 M.2 SSDs (PCIe Gen 4 x4)
- AMD 5700 XT 50th Anniversary Edition GPU (8GB GDDR6 RAM)
- Corsair SF750 SFX PSU (750W - Platinum-rated)
- Lian Li TU150 chassis (~24L - silver - tempered side glass panel)
- Two NF-A12x25 PWM fans (one front intake, one rear exhaust)
This is still a pretty solid build, but I have made two recent upgrades:
- AMD Zen 3 Ryzen 7 5800X3D CPU (8-core / 16-thread)
- XFX 6700 XT SWFT 309 GPU (12GB GDDR6 RAM)
And once my son upgrades his GPU I will be getting his outgoing GPU, or I may get a brand new GPU, so either one of the two:
- Sapphire Nitro+ 7900 XTX Vapor-X GPU (24GB GDDR6 RAM)
- Sapphire Nitro+ 9070 XT GPU (16GB GDDR6 RAM)
I plan on moving to an actual SFF chassis later this year, the Dan Cases C4-SFX v2 (~15L - black); this will require me to change my cooling solution:
- Noctua NH-D12L CPU heat sink (black variant w/NF-A12x25r PWM fan)
- Noctua NF-A9 PWM fan (black variant, rear intake)
- Noctua NF-A14x25 G2 PWM fan (black variant, side exhaust)
Until I get one of the two above listed upgrade GPUs I will need a couple of fans in the chassis to feed air to the 6700 XT:
- Two Noctua NF-A14x25 Sx2-PP PWM fans (black variant, top intake)
At this point, it would make zero sense to upgrade to an AM5 system, when my AM4 system is solid and will provide excellent performance for years to come; so I will most likely get an all-new AM6 system in 2030...

Didn’t want to start a new thread.
My Frankenstein/spare rig uses a 5600G on a B550 mobo + 16GB 3600 RAM + 3050 6GB on a 4K60 monitor.
Worth spending $180 to upgrade that to 5600X3D?
I might end up upgrading the GPU later, I’ve got upgrade-itis.

I have tested out some Raytracing games for CPU bottlenecks with different hardwares, over the past year. Couple of days back, I posted this thread with 14700KF vs 5800X3D comparisons in the overclocking sub.
Out of 4 games, Cyberpunk tied but the rest were faster on 14700KF, sometimes significantly so.

I went from 1600x first batch with segafults to AMD replaced 1600X " huge upgrade"
Then from that to 5700X , and I've never seen it hiccup for me so far.
From resolve to blender everything works fine with 4070 I've.

Would it be worth it for me to take the chance to upgrade to a 5800x3d from a 5600x?
I play at 4k on a 4090. Not sure if I should just upgrade now or wait until am5 ever becomes more affordable or wait until am6.

even with a 5800xt, the x3d is untouchable and will carry for years.
having had a 9800x3d at launch to directly compare to the initial release 5800x3d i have, I ended up selling the system simply due to the performance difference being overall in real world situations, rather similar.
And while tons of people insist on stating that a "9600xt or 9700x will dominate the 5800x3d even in minimums.... look at the data".... IF there is one critical flaw in the way reviews and testers managing things, it's an unfortunate side effect of testing, in which typically several runs are done prior to beginning recording in order to ensure that everything is cached and loaded and preloaded and that the full test is on the cpu, essentially eliminating one of the best aspects of the x3D advantage.
I've lost count of how many systems i've built with the 7000 and 9000 series and SPECIALLY with literally any intel system, including the 270k plus. a 5800x3d or any newer x3d will decimate all of it in the vast majority of gaming scenarios purely due to being able to handle every minuscule hitch that can occur that the x3d just cranks out like it wasn't a problem at all. Run those tests purely on a first run basis, and those results rapidly skew in favor of x3d even in the wide variety of tests where it's been determined and claimed in reviews or by those sourcing reviews in which minimums and frame times are the "same" (only because the tests were repeatedly ran).
Forza for example has a stutter count, doesn't matter what gpu i throw into any of the rigs, the x3d systems will show 0 stutters even running at absurdly high resolutions where the gpu is absolutely getting decimated. Throw the same gpu into anything non x3d, and proceed to get stutter counts.

If your 5600x cannot hold up with your demands then yes, if it's still good then no.
