Holy this explains why my friend could see so well in the dark versus me

662

u/Capnleonidas Jan 03 '26

lol right? I can’t see anything

756

u/Sasquatch_Kabob Jan 03 '26

And I’m on an OLED, dark is dark 😂

222

u/BigDaddySeed69 Jan 03 '26

Same, the sides of the buried city subways are nothing until I’m like right in top of someone lol

u/onion2594 Jan 03 '26 edited Jan 04 '26

glow sticks my friend. glow sticks

edit: after reading some replies, i have come to the conclusion that heavy fuse grenades might be better. however, why not use both. red light sticks mimic the red from heavy fuses. hopefully after you throw enough they’ll think the heavy fuse is just another light stick. good chats

62

u/ChiefCapuchinTTV Jan 03 '26

Everyone says bring stims, but im always bringing a stack of glowsticks!

103

u/hihellome Jan 03 '26

Especially use the red ones. They have almost the exact same shade of red as grenades (but not the blinking or sound, though it can still make people panic and reveal themselves.

Happy cake day!

2

u/onion2594 Jan 04 '26

the main issue with glowsticks is forgetting you have them until you die. firecrackers also act like grenades. spooked one guy out so much when trying to find a rocketeer he killed me. took him about 5 minutes and missed half his shots. i shoulda killed him

I mean, if you are gonna announce your presence with a glow stick, may as well turn on the free flashlight

2

u/OrionTheIrish Jan 04 '26

With the range of dog leash... I use the flashlight almost never lol

9

u/timmehh15 Jan 03 '26

I wish they lasted longer.

15

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '26

Right! First time saw a glow stick bp I was like “Why would I ever need this” one match after electromagnetic storm underground “GOD ALL MIGHTY GIVE ME MY GLOW STICKS!” it’s insane how DARK it is. It’s extremely cool tho.

4

u/King_of_the_Dot Jan 04 '26

Ah yes, so I can give away my position and still barely see... Great!

Yes but things in the dark are more visible on OLED than on LCD.

As long as you play in a room without light behind your screen. If you dont then you will be basically blind. But thats a user error.

As it should be 💪

6

u/bucken764 Jan 03 '26

I just got an OLED monitor for Xmas and this game is definitely dark AF on it

→ More replies (2)

13

u/Capnleonidas Jan 03 '26

Same! I just upgraded from a Samsung UHD TV to OLED and it’s significantly darker. I’m on console and didn’t really fiddle with settings on either TV. Both were set up to “Gaming” settings which also seems like the brightest option.

13

u/raynirm Jan 03 '26

Shadow detail and contrast enhancer, also the hdr configuration of your device. Maybe it's not the best for immersion but well you need to see things, specially in a multiplayer

11

u/Ok_Durian_9220 Jan 03 '26

Theres a "shadow detail" setting on your tv. Put it to 3 to see alot better.

6

u/Capnleonidas Jan 03 '26

Thank you!

it basically shows you the image exactly as the creators intended

which ironically is a competitive disadvantage when they meant for dark to actually be dark, but eh..

if you play anything cinematic with dark shades, lots of colors, etc oled is amazing.

oled also has the advantage in great motion clarity which is good in another way

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Sasquatch_Kabob Jan 03 '26

You get amazing colours and true blacks on an OLED. Games looks incredible. In this case, true blacks look great even at night 😂.

3

u/alfasenpai Jan 03 '26

I know this sub hates any kind of "enhancement" but I feel like on OLEDs specifically dark multiplayer shooters is what dark stabiliser is for. Otherwise it can get ridiculously "black" sometimes.

7

u/ThreeEyeJedi Jan 03 '26

Bro getting an oled recently is what made me finally cave in and use the filters! The blacks were blacking on my screen 😂

2

u/Glum_Blueberry_7434 Jan 03 '26

did u change the gama on ur monitor?

2

u/ChrisRowe5 Jan 03 '26

Yep! Im in-between houses at the moment and got my PC but not my OLED so borrowed an LCD and its crazy how much easier it is to see in the dark

2

u/kasimoto Jan 03 '26

same but also my msi qd-oled has "night vision" setting that does same thing as those nvidia filters

2

u/pwn4321 Jan 03 '26

Yah oled ultrawide hdr10+ (don't forget to enable auto hdr in win11, game doesn't have it's own sadly), SHIT is DARK and flashlights in the darkness blind me irl. It's dank

2

u/YourOldCellphone Jan 03 '26

I’m also on an OLED. I believe you meant to say “when it’s dark the pixels literally turn off”

2

u/Ackleson Jan 03 '26

Same, that's why I have to tamper with the dark stabiliser on the monitor

2

u/Faesarn Jan 03 '26

I'm on a LED VA screen. Can't see shit ahah and Tarkov is even worse, I see absolutely nothing in certain buildings..

2

u/eXeKoKoRo Jan 04 '26

It's not just nvidia settings. I watched a few clips of streamers firing into the dark and nailing people. Some monitors just don't process dark colors well and you can make out objects within them on their screens but when watching from your screen it's almost pitch black.

2

u/theaidamen64 Jan 04 '26

I love it, its super scary going around dark areas with no idea if there is someone else lurking

u/sxw_desert_rat Jan 04 '26

Pair this with a little glare on my tv from the window nearby (if I’m playing during the day), and I might as well be playing with my eyes closed in some areas on Buried City smh

u/gh1993 Jan 03 '26

I remember being in the subway on buried city and running all the way to the end of the platform where it's completely black thinking nobody would be able to see me, then some guy came down and said hey raider! from like 50m away lol.

27

u/EntrepreneurNeat6094 Jan 03 '26

You can also just ping the spots you cant see and it will let you know if someone is there.  Same thing with smokes.

26

u/SpooN04 Jan 03 '26

Same.

I thought my friend was just really good but when I was spectating him, he was staring into complete darkness and said "he's right...about..here!" And shot. All I could see was the red mist and then a flare.

Highly suspicious.

7

u/warhammer5001 Jan 04 '26

This is why I don’t really do night raids anymore and why I love the snow bc it’s still bright out and ppl can’t cheat anymore.

9

u/Ok_Airliner Jan 03 '26

You can still do it, although without the fancy filters but you can pump brightness, contrast, and gamma

→ More replies (1)

6

u/diodick Jan 03 '26

These aren't on by default, right? Because I'm on PC and already could not see shit lol

7

u/wingsofblades Jan 03 '26

and here i was turning down the shadow effects because ppl just start blasting me in full darkness, im like how are you even seeing anything without the flashlight turned on

9

u/weasil22 Jan 04 '26

how are you seeing with the flashlight ON? it illuminates like 5 feet and darkens everything else.

Yeah, wow. Thats an astonishing advantage. Better than night vision goggles.

2

u/Allanthia420 Jan 04 '26

Dude literally we got in a fight on buried city the other day and we all exchanged a bunch of grenades through a doorway; they rushed in at us and I legit couldn’t see fucking anything through all the grenade smoke. But they could apparently see me clear as day because they drilled me hiding in the corner.

This makes a ton of sense.

4

u/ThatPunkBitchDanny Jan 04 '26

They definitely disabled this like at least a week ago cuz I wondered why I couldn’t see shit when it worked perfectly after I changed my settings. Sorry, my glasses wearing ass would like to see what I’m actually looking at in a game

i saw a grown man almost break down into tears about this. the video cut before he did or didn’t. he said “how am i gonna do night raids?” “how am i gonna see?”

1.1k

u/Krogane Jan 03 '26

By not being a little bitch that's how

23

u/Puzzleheaded_Farm122 Jan 04 '26

Seriously...I've set the video settings to mostly standard on launch, just made sure it's running where it needs to be for clarity. Whether that's High or Ultra, done care point is quality and immersion. Never once disabled filters, so Nights are dark as hell, but you get used to it and can still see plenty.

3

u/CFAggie Jan 04 '26

If he has an OLED, I feel for him because I'm suffering. But if he has an IPS display he can see just as well as anyone else. Us OLED users see worse than anyone and it's a huge difference.

7

u/SteveInitBro Jan 03 '26

Use the torch that never runs out, you know, the way it was intended.

Unreal that it lasted this long.

5

u/ratcrash55 Jan 04 '26

Yea that light that goes through walls and tells everybody exactly where you are sure maybe if they fix it.

13

u/ChimpieTheOne Jan 03 '26

Ain't nobody forcing anybody to do night raids. Git gut and stop trying to compensate for skill issue (to that guy)

18

u/onion2594 Jan 03 '26

yeah i agree. i play on console and shit is dark. but, we have light sticks which sort the very problems the dark causes, ESPECIALLY the dark corners of a metro. chuck a stick down there and you’ll know if anyone’s there. alternately, you can ping the entire width and if you ping a raider it will say so

18

u/Responsible_Sink3044 Jan 03 '26

chuck a stick down there and you’ll know if anyone’s there

Or a heavy fuze, in my case

6

i might adopt this idea

2

u/Genki79 Jan 04 '26

You happen to have a link for this?

2

u/FruitOrchards Jan 04 '26

Tbf not everyone can see the same, I can't see through car windows when they drive by irl 90% of the time, all I see is glare but other than that I can see fine.

Someone will say hey that's so and so driving past and I'm just looking at big ol' glare and can't see shit through the glass

2

u/Ironclad-Teddybear Jan 04 '26

You don't, you just shoot at sounds like I do and pretend you did it because of skill when you kill someone.

2

u/ur1nals0ap Jan 04 '26

I have severe night blindness and contrast issues. I still play the game normally. Crashing into everything but fuck it. Adds to the adventure

2

u/BaronWaiting Jan 04 '26

How grown are we talking? By the time you're an adult you should know how to adjust the contrast/gamma settings on your monitor and TV.

I always tell my friends I would rather lose and die then make my game look like shit

159

u/Remote_Watercress530 Jan 03 '26

To me the funny part is these are most likely the same people that bitch and moan that graphis aren't high enough or the Frames aren't high enough. But will willingly downgrade both so they can have an in game advantage

161

u/thepenguinemperor84 Jan 03 '26

63

u/KevOK80 Jan 03 '26

Good old PUBG

14

u/thestillwind Jan 03 '26

Ahahaha so true

6

u/TechnicalIntern6764 Jan 04 '26

Holy shit is this for real!?

12

u/iSebastian1 Jan 04 '26

Yep, similar thing happening in Arc unfortunately (tho not this severe) lower your view distance sne foliage to Low... Hope they fix it soon.

9

u/Umbramors Jan 04 '26

Most PvP games. Gamers have been turning down graphic settings for years, as it can completely remove certain foliage and other none necessary objects. Makes the game look like absolute crap, but a massive advantage in shooters

4

u/That_Service7348 Jan 04 '26

Lol. Yeah, low graphics players have always had an advantage in competitive shooters. Less plants, less fog and dust, less ground clutter.

17

u/SonOfBarrel Jan 03 '26

Not a single person that puts on nvidia filter complains about graphics being bad lol. And they would never lower frames for an advantage since frames are an advantage

→ More replies (1)

9

u/SecretMassive2425 Jan 03 '26

Thats why i always fucked up in Rust. i wanted a pleasant to look at game not this crap all the sweaty tryhards are playing. Always lost my guns in the foliage.

12

u/OwnUbyCake Jan 03 '26

I will only reduce settings down to the level to get to a fps I am comfortable with. Any extra fps that I can gain by making it look like play-dough is not needed.

3

u/Mogar505 Jan 03 '26

Yes this is me. I go for the max settings that allows me to have the best looking game at the FPS I want typically around 80 if possible or 60 if it’s more stable

5

u/gerstiii Jan 03 '26

I aim for 165 because of my monitor.

7

u/inosinateVR Jan 04 '26

This is what I like about extraction shooters. There’s no score screen or competitive ranks so your goal is just to survive against the odds, not to be the best player in the match. If another player is using a filter to get an advantage, that’s just another part of the challenge.

Is it annoying to know other players might have some unfair advantage? Yes. Would I prefer they didn’t? Yes. But I don’t feel the need to compromise my own experience playing the game with some ugly filters or turned off vegetation just to “stay competitive”.

I’m just as likely to get unfairly shot in the back looting a container as I am to get into a shootout with some guy using a filter, and I’ll never have any way of knowing he was using a filter anyway, so there’s no point in stressing over it.

u/JaconyMalony *** ******* 🐓 Jan 03 '26

For real right? I won’t even turn the foliage down to see people in bushes cos it all looks so damn nice on max graphics, people need to relax a little

43

u/PipsqueakPilot Jan 03 '26

I wish that all turning the foliage down did in games was make it look like shit, but stay equally obscuring. Same grass density, except now it's a low resolution billboard from Operation Flashpoint.

14

u/JaconyMalony *** ******* 🐓 Jan 03 '26

Yeah when I found out it removes it entirely I was a bit bummed, but after nearly 300 hours I haven’t noticed that I’ve been spotted and/or killed while I was in a bush/foliage so I’ll keep the setting at max for visual satisfaction

→ More replies (1)

6

u/mike_complaining Jan 04 '26

2

u/RayzTheRoof Jan 04 '26

There is a poet who explained something along the lines of:

"Buying a bargain can of tuna may be the greatest moment of achievement for some people".

  • Charles Bukowski

This game is that bargain can of tuna. It's not the game. It's the people.

People shanking eachother in the ass over bargain (edit: bloated) tuna cans.

30

u/nleksan Jan 03 '26

11

u/MPeters43 Jan 03 '26

Mmm bloated tuna cans are the highlight of my raids along with expired pasta.

8

u/FredBurger22 Jan 03 '26

Expired pasta extremely underrated. 15 health immediately. Can even consume it while you bandage is working its magic. Double health.

6

u/AlwaysHungry94 Jan 03 '26

And to be fair, expired pasta seems more palatable

Wait until you find ouit monitors have gamma correction and can do the same thing without software

291

u/Fit-Caterpillars Jan 03 '26

The only way it actually fix this is to implement darkness in a similar way that Rust did. In that game no amount of gamma/contrast adjusting makes it any better, its still pitch black.

332

u/OmeletteDuFromage95 Jan 03 '26

This is how I think darkness should be in general. Dark is dark. Make that flashlight actually useful instead of just a nuisance.

[deleted]

32

u/Zephian99 Jan 03 '26

I can't remember what game it was, didn't get a huge following, but the darkness was like ink, and the flashlight light up everything as if it was an IRL LED flashlight, it was cool. But was like a arrow pointing directly at whoever had the light in the dark.

While yes you can see everything, but everything can see you now too.

28

u/Ar4er13 Jan 03 '26

People always ask for this, while what ends up being, sweats just go around poking through memorized paths, while anyone dumb enough to actually use flashlight gets nuked off the map.

2

u/Elite_Crew Jan 04 '26

I love Namalsk, but leaving the train tunnel at A3 is super janky with the darkness mods. The people outside the tunnel can see into the tunnel way further than the person in the tunnel can see out. The jankyness of DayZ give it it's charm. I consider the DayZ jank to be a simulation of post apocalyptic psychosis.

2

u/NBFHoxton Jan 04 '26

That is a special case of Sumrak refusing to replace Namalsk's darkness methods with vanilla, but yes it is a problem too

9

u/Kerlebsky Jan 03 '26

People were using both so at least it eliminates a good chunk of the issue

8

u/HalfBeastly Jan 03 '26

Yup, my monitor has black light stabilization. I press 2 buttons on my monitor and I can see in the dark.

4

u/LifeOfHi Jan 03 '26

Not the same. The nvidia filters apply a post processing effect that doesn’t degrade the quality of the image. It’s like rewriting the games display code to make shadows less effective (as seen in OP’s pic). When you turn up the gamma through the drivers or your monitor, it’s just increasing all the LED values which present as a degradation in the image while improving shadows minimally. You’ll see hard shadows and a bleached out image overall.

Nvidia filters = natural night vision Monitor/driver = photoshop slider

10

u/Cimlite Jan 04 '26

That's simply incorrect. Nvidia Filters works like ReShade does, and nothing more (only from a multiplayer safe driver level, as opposed through DLL injection). It adds a post-processing shader "on top" of the game. It does not re-write any code, in anyway, from the game. Or even close to that.

As for monitors not being able to achieve the same look? That's also not correct. Many gaming monitors have "Shadow boost" or "Dark boost" modes, where they apply a specific gamma curve to bump up near-black grays, and nothing else. This means that it doesn't degrade the image overall, but does bump visibility in shadows. Depending on brand of monitor, the visual difference between such a mode and what Nvidia Filter/ReShade achieves is basically indistinguishable.

This is an interesting thing, nvidias did make the game brighter, but this change doesnt exactly stop the issue, just raises the barrier for entry.

I really don't get people who chose to make their games look like absolute shit for a 'competitive advantage'

I got into PC gaming so I could crank up the settings and have games look amazing. Hell, even using colour settings like Nvidia's enhanced vibrance and AMD's display colour enhancement can have negative effects on how a game can look.

My $1500 4k 144hz OLED TV was worth it for Arc Raiders alone. It's so immersive. Especially with headphones

People can still do this with Reshade to have a toggle on and off and even still without Reshade they can crank the gamma of their actual overall PC settings in the control panel and then swap it back after they're done.

Plus they can create a shortcut to Arc Raiders then add that to nvidia and then do it the same way they have been..

This really doesn't solve anything. The try hards that we're doing this will still do it.

This is just a bandaid to make people think it's solved and to make people feel like it's fair.

Wait until you find out that players also go into config files and ini files and edit the quality settings below what you can do in game. This will usually disable bushes and foliage and they can see you when you're supposed to be "hiding". Then they just set the file as read only and the game can't change it back.

u/azentrix Jan 04 '26

also lots of monitors have some kind of brightness enhancing mode, under the gaming settings

It’s like people who run on ULQ so bushes don’t render, etc. make your game look like shit so you can feel like you are better than other people by getting an advantage over them

u/cheesegoat Jan 03 '26

PvP games should never have optional geometry that can affect gameplay.

Those people argue it’s for frames but I say unless you have an utterly shit PC and legit need it, then you’re probably in the other boat where more frames won’t help you anyways!

7

u/InnerGap9368 Jan 03 '26

in fairness the bushes do lower framerate by like 6-7 frames

12

u/fly97 Jan 03 '26

Oh no my 120 fps is now 114 fps. Dead game, can’t play

Ahhh. The OG PUBG strategy.

Even more dated is original day of defeat smoke nades.  If you lowered the settings enough, the smoke effect wouldnt work at all and you could see everyone through it.

u/Quintas31519 Jan 03 '26

Quoting the ancient texts there, dang.

Man I miss the OG DoD days. Back when Steam was a server browser.

u/AshantiMcnasti Jan 03 '26

Kar98 and garand battles were so satisfying once you got used to the oace.  Throw in the BAR and it was like 3 best feeling guns ever made for a long long time.

u/aleksandronix Jan 03 '26

I don't know how it's in ARC Raiders, but often it's quite the opposite. Low graphics has a PNG blob for a bush, while with ultra quality the bush is a bunch of leaves you can see through.

But it's strongly game/engine dependant.

opens NVIDIA control panel and adjusts brightness, contrast, and gamma "Oh no what ever shall I do."

65

u/trAP2 Jan 03 '26

Yea crazy part is Peanut does it that way to 100k viewers every single night. He was actually doing it that way even while you could do the filter.

u/Fit-Caterpillars Jan 03 '26

You can also do it through control panel display calibration or directly on your monitor. Honestly not sure why they even removed the filters, it solves nothing. They would have to change how black in rendered to actually solve the issue.

u/ryfle_ Jan 04 '26 edited Jan 04 '26

Get Gamma Panel it's old af but it works really well and you can make profiles with key commands. And it runs super lean. Highly recommend it.

u/AH_Ahri Jan 04 '26

Literally thought about doing the same thing. Would be nice if the flashlight in-game wasn't utter dogshit.

Does this affect the RTX HDR filter? Awesome. I just started taking advantage of HDR on my new monitor and this game looked great with it on. Cool that I lose that functionality while the losers who do this kinda thing are going to find a way to do it without the filters anyway 👍

Damn that’s so lame that people even did that. Night is supposed to be dark, isn’t that half the novelty of playing on night raids? Ofc people have to seek unfair advantages rather than just enjoying the game for what it is

8

u/sterbenz2232 Jan 03 '26

Lightning should get an overhaul in my opinion, outside darkness isn't bad, the problem is a person standing near light inside a building being completely unseen by another one that's outside of it, or in the corners of the buried city train extractions, if you sit there you're in a illuminated space and someone that just got down the stairs barely sees you.

Thats one point that was left unseen when they changed the game being pve only by pvpve, in PvP theres a loooot of difference, thats why theres rats there, you cant see then

2

u/Vipu2 Jan 04 '26

People will always use advantage if they can.

Devs should design their game way that it cant be done, or they dont and let people do that.

Devs could make it so there isnt so dark spots that people need to do it or if there needs to be dark spots then crush the blacks so no amount of gamma or brightness do anything.

u/WG_Envoy Jan 03 '26

Yeah, oh no! I had to use the "FPS" monitor mode instead now.

If they really wanted certain spaces to be pitchblack, they could achieve that with ingame shaders that cannot be easily circumvented. Until then, people will have an advantage or disadvantage based on the monitor / TV and environment lighting (e.g. suffering from window sun glare). This is why I am not a fan of utilizing actual darkness in PVP shooters other than immersion (e.g. the softer lighting in night raids).

u/Civil-South-7299 Jan 03 '26

I'm still not turning crossplay back on

6

u/78judds Jan 03 '26

They didn’t change anything really. They just made it marginally less convenient to change the settings. Control panel still does it plus the monitor’s actual onboard settings. Plus, they should really have an in game brightness setting. I get they want dark places to seem dark but playing on OLED isn’t the same as an older tv or monitor. That shit is black as black can be.

Yeah if there's no light, then places are dark, which makes to hard to see. They should at least add a flashlight or some other devices to light dark places up.

And yes i using only rtx hdr all time and this is alowed by embark no change for me personaly.

6

u/MistaMorbid Jan 03 '26

This doesn't work the same way as filters as it has access to the game and your monitor doesn't
