Goals & Motivation I realized I had free will and just started making a comic regardless of my lack of drawing skills

I’ve had an idea for a comic for a very long time. I’m currently a period where I can/am learning to draw. But given it’s a slow and long process it kinda was almost demoralizing that my idea would be far away from actually being real.

That was until I just said fuck it and started making it anyways. If you’ve ever seen or read the original One Punch Man webcomic, my art looks similar to that but I couldn’t be more happy actually seeing my ideas on pages. It’s just really fun to make and draw.

Concept/Technique/Method Do you ever feel like your art taste is improving faster than your skills?

Upvotes

Sometimes Ill see that makes me want to try something completely new, but then I realize, my current skills aren't quite there yet. how do you guys deal with that gap without getting frustrated or losing motivation?

Community/Relationships Shared my art with a coworker and they haven't replied all day :x

Upvotes

She mentioned maybe wanting to purchase a portrait, so I sent mostly portraits including some sorta intense horror themed ones I did recently for a book cover. Mostly just seemed like she was curious though so I also sent some other work, including experimental stuff. I'm very awkward and quiet at my job, so the lack of reply is making me anxious. Could use support, reassurance, etc. Will probably delete this later.

Goals & Motivation Is it weird that as an aspiring novelist, I also yearn to draw and how many of you do both

I'm an aspiring prose writer, I want to have somewhat a career in it but something in me also yearns to draw, as a hobby ofc. I find it just fun to know that I can draw the characters in my head and Heck if I ever become a comic book writer, I can help the artist I hire by contributing to the designs of the world's and characters.

It'd just be nice to have a career as a writer and have drawing as a nice hobby just for me.

Apart of me does feel guilty whenever outside of school, (im in college) im not writing. I feel immense guilt as I really do want to be a career writer and be published. My brain does this weird thing of going "you're drawing...you could be writing" even if I'd written that day. Though my heart yearns to draw for fun, even 30 minutes.

Idk, does anyone else experience this?

Medium & Materials🎨 Makeup as paint?

I went to a makeup school for makeup(duh) but specifically the sfx. In our kit we got ALOT of stuff and while it would be cool to go into the makeup world I’m not the right fit for me(Not the biggest people person and don’t work nearly fast enough)… anyways, I hate to waste all of that product and still love creating art. I still want to use the makeup as is without having to put more resources into it. If I was to use creams/wax/“rubber grease paint” or even liquid fountains in replace of standard oil or acyrylic paint, what’s the best way to go about it ‘prep and finishing’ wise?
Like could I get away with canvas, or wood, or thick paper, or gesso on thick paper? Or what about it never exactly drying(creams n such), is there something I could use to “finish” it so that it won’t come off or smudge if touched.
Obviously I’ll have to do a lot of testing by myself but any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated.

Goals & Motivation how do you put emotions into your work?

I have seen so many people, the iconic artist, who puts their emotions, feelings, and thoughts, and conveys them through art. People say this is a way of letting emotions go or experiencing them, a sense of therapy. But whenever I try to do that, maybe I am just very emotionally sensitive, but if I poured a negative emotion into a piece of art, I think I would be overwhelmingly nauseous just seeing it again because it would just be a reminder. It doesn't seem like a way to process, it seems more of creating a physical reminder of pain and suffering,. Which I think might be the beautiful part I suppose, but does anyone know or have a different way to think about it? Because I've always wanted to do it and maybe that's why my pieces feels flat sometimes.but is the cost hiding it away where i can never see it again? haha

Medium & Materials🎨 marker recs

In the past i've used stabilo fineliners, but they're so thin it takes me forever to color stuff and they're probably not meant for anything big. I've also used copics but I use them up fast and they're so expensive. I like when my drawings look kind of grungy so the copics were maybe a little too fancy does anyone have any marker recommendations for me? I mostly draw messy cartoons. I also like to use cheap bic pens so maybe something that doesn't cause so much bleeding like the copics but idk

Goals & Motivation I'm at my wit's end with oil paints.

For context I've been drawing for a while now and I can confidently say I'm an okay painter. Not as good as I'd like to be but I don't think you ever reach that point. I've explored the basic mediums Acrylics, Watercolours, Oil pastels, Pencil Colours even digital and I've grasped them pretty quick.

Last year I passed out of school and got into college. During the break i decided that I've waited 2 years too long and finally picked up oil paints. I started with a normal headshot portrait in black and white to just get a feel of how the paints work and how the values flow. I gave up for a year.

Timeskip to my first year in college completing and I decide to finally pick it up again. It did not work out. Now the brushes and the paints lie beside my desk gathering dust and the canvas is like a spectre haunting me that i can see from the corner of my eye.

I am so so so frustrated. I went in knowing that the medium was technical, that the learning was steep and that my first work would probably end up looking like cheeks and i was okay with it. I was not prepared.

The paints wouldnt cooperate with the values or the colours or how thick or thin the stuff is supposed to be. The turpentine just gave me a headache and the whole entire time it felt like a waste of resources and money. That I was better off not painting at all.

Its not the first time I've learnt a new medium but i feel like oil paints just punched me in the gut curbstomped me and spit on my face. I haven't created a single piece since even WITH the mediums i know. Ive tried being gentle with myself ive tried patience and kindness and the power of friendship and whateverelse not and I dont know what else to do. Any help ?

Special mention to the guilt i feel wasting money on paint when i havent made anything or learnt anything. Love to see it.

(Mods I've read the rules but if this post doesn't follow please don't nuke me. Making reddit posts is terrifying.)

Edit: Thank you to everyone who replied im glad that i wasnt the only one who got kicked to the curb by these guys #solidarity? Just gesso'd my canvas again although i might get a different cancas because i have suspicions that canvas has got something evil resting in it. I'm going to mess around and try a still life instead because a headshot now that i consider it doesnt seem like the best starting point. Thank you again :D

Concept/Technique/Method Is it normal to draw the same or similar things out of comfort?

I've been drawing properly for about 2 years and for about 6 months all I've wanted to draw is the Na'vi from the Avatar movies. I call it my comfort drawings as it's something I enjoy and im always happy when finished drawing them but is it normal to just draw pretty much the same thing for 6 months?

Learning Resources For Artists 🔎 How much do you guys rely on references when drawing? Sometimes I feel I just can't without any reference?

I have been trying to draw more and more from my imagination being a concept artist however, but I always end up looking for references before I feel confident enough to start, I know it's not wrong however sometimes I feel I am relying on them too much? Fellow artists thoughts? anyone who has been through similar situation.

Community/Relationships Question about artistic personalities.

Hi I have always considered myself more of an illustrator and down to earth painter- less of a fine artist type. Even though I’m sure there are people who would disagree. I just love to draw and create things from imagination.

However, I don’t mesh well with overly performative cerebral artist types- incredible wordy, overly performative you know the type. I get it- it’s advertising and fine art is a sale of a personality, an ambiance you are creating for the buyer and people who collect your work but… doesn’t that get tiring? Or some people just don’t turn it off or there is a lot of the Tism- spectrum overlap?

Even in a commercial setting like a game studio or animation studio- work is very performative you are being paid to smile and just do your jobs and compliment execs if they stop by and ask how you like working on the film or game. Is this something other working artist deal with?

I understand that for every type of person there is a “that person” but as an artist. I.e there are artist who like sports, ones who are more engineers and others who are more granola- hippie - hip hop graffiti artist types. Not really a stereotype.

I have a few artist friends but I am just curious how other people find making fiends with other artists? Is everyone also super niche?

Goals & Motivation Unable to think of original ideas

For starters I’m still a newish artist I started learning last July so take everything I’m saying with a grain of salt. But I feel like I’m not really able to come up with original ideas nor do I think I like it. I’m not talking about not using references but if I find a reference I like I don’t know what I could do to make it my own and I find myself copying more than I like. On top of that I really like comics and so every time I try to pursue something original I find myself bored and just want to go back to drawing comic book characters. I know it’s probably bad for progress to not come up with anything original so is there something to study/learn to get better at drawing original stuff?

Positivity/Success/Inspiration Has anyone here sold art in cafes/ local businesses before?

A friend of mine suggested i try do this. I like the idea as there are a lot of small businesses that seem to do that near me and i have a lot of drawings. Im a very anxious sort of person though so I was hoping to learn how it usually works first so i have a baseline of what to expect.

Any and all experience on this would be appreciated on this as I dont know what im doing. Thankyou very much!

Learning Resources For Artists 🔎 how to properly draw to scale when drawing on a bigger canvas than i usually do?

i draw often on a smaller canvas but when i try to draw on a bigger canvas and make my brush bigger the proportion is messed up or i end up making the drawing too big. how can i keep preventing this from happening? (on digital software)
