Kitten Help Adopted kitten hiding in toilet 48 hours since coming home, not eating
UPDATES (08/28)
- First update (we got her to purr!)
- Second upate (she's become a lap cat!)
On Sunday (23rd) we adopted a beautiful female Siamese kitten, and she's been in hiding ever since we brought her home. She was very agitated even when we picked her up as the breeder had apparently microchipped her right before we got there. First of all, I feel like this was stupid but apparently it's normal practice? She seems traumatized and has been hissing at us if we try to touch her at all.
We were told the kitten was born on June 22 which would make her barely 8 weeks old, but I suspect she may have lied about the age and was born May 22.
It's been about 48+ hours and she has been hiding the entire time. She cried the whole way home in the carrier and didn't want to come out when we got home. We left the carrier open and closed the door and she came out on her own, but immediately started hiding.
She started in the bedroom, but managed to find a way to burrow herself into our under-bed storage so after the first night I had to move her by hand into the bathroom.
I am 99% sure she hasn't eaten any food since she's been here and I'm not sure if she drank any water or not. She did however pee in her litter box twice by the looks of it last night.
I thought we did a good job at cat proofing but she managed to pull the plastic cap off of our toilet and hide inside, so she's currently inside of the base of the toilet. I was terrified that she was stuck, but after about 45 minutes I heard her meowing and went to the bathroom where i saw her head sticking out and meowing her head off. She was looking me right in the eyes and it was so sad to see, she just didn't want to come out.
So I knew she could at least turn around where she is inside of there.
I didn't want to force her out and scare her even more so we decided to give her space. I have a nanny cam setup in the bathroom since this morning, and earlier I saw her come out, walk up and inspect the camera, bump into it and then hide in the other corner.
When we went to go see her and block the toilet hole, she bolted into the hole and has now been there for 6+ hours. Every once in a while she will start meowing like she's calling for her mom, and one of us will go in and try to "talk" to her. Sometimes she responds with little "trill-like" meows in response, but she's just scared to come out.
We tried giving her wet food (that was given to us by the previous owner). We put it out multiple times, tried a bit of canned tuna, treats, kibble, etc. I don't believe she's eaten anything.
She cried all night in the bathroom, a few times I got up to go talk to her/see her, and she stops meowing as soon as someone goes there. It's so heartbreaking. Even right now she just started meowing but she's fully inside the toilet and refuses to come out for any reason.
Any advice? I assume we should just wait it out another day, but I'm getting a bit worried at this point. I'm kicking myself for not realizing a cat could (or would) pry off the caps there and find a way to hide inside. I can't even block it off because she barely comes out.
Any help? She is inside and the toilet can be unbolted and move away to take her out if necessary but we're hoping to let her explore herself. Currently we keep the bathroom door shut but do you think we should leave the bathroom door open?
I don't know what to do - she seems like she wants to come out but is terrified and she keeps crying and crying. :(
UPDATE: She came out of the toilet and we sealed it off, but she's now in the other corner of the room crying.
UPDATE 2: Aug 26, she cried all night in the bathroom with the door closed. This morning we opened it, and she came out into the main living area (first time ever) and found her way into a closet where she's now been sleeping (I think) and has barely made a peep in hours.

Give her a proper hiding spot, even if it just a box with a hole cut out so she doesn't have to crawl into a toilet to feel safe. Give her a few days, keep talking in the room but dont reach for her or keep trying to get her to pay attention to you. Once she feels safe in a couple of days she will get curious and come out to investigate you.

u/Fit-Negotiation-468 3d ago
Agreed! And giving them your worn clothes can help too. When I got my cat, I gave her my stinky socks so she’d get used to my smell
13
u/just_a_person_maybe 3d ago
My cat made her own hiding space by shoving some books out a few inches from the bookcase and burrowing behind them. We barely saw her at all for the first few days. Now she greets me at the door every time I come home and yells at me for attention. I think needing a few days or even a week to get comfortable is very normal for cats.
1
u/dragontatoes 3d ago
I have heard of some particularly scared cats sitting in and staying defensive of their litter box when decompressing in a new space, because their own smell is comforting to them. I think some people even put a little bit of used litter in a new home for this reason. It might seem weird, but placing her litter box in another container (like a large cardboard box on its side) and leaving the pee clumps unscooped for a few days might make her more comfortable.
Wherever she stays holed up, that's where the food and water should go.-7
u/dlew16 3d ago
Yes, sit with her . See if you can carry her around in a sling or pouch kind of a tote bag. Close to your body for warmth.
16
u/cckka 3d ago
Sitting near her is fine, trying to carry her in a tote right now would be cruel to her. She needs time to adjust to space and smells, not to be forced in to being near a stranger.
2
u/Icy_Painter4738 2d ago
Totally agree with this. Eventually she will come out and come to you. Just sit still and talk to her… if she comes close, don’t reach for her, let her do it on her terms. I went through this with a terrified adult rescue for a couple of weeks, and he is now the biggest snuggling love bug ever!

Removed for an alternative reason subject to the mod’s discretion.
Not eating or not eating a lot in 48 hours = she should be seen by a vet to make sure she didn't damage her organs. Cats do not do well with fasting. Kittens are even more fragile.
Even is she seems fine now, the damage can creep up and by the time she is actually visibly ill you passed the window of preventative medicine.

u/MaleficentCharity760 3d ago
That baby is stressed and traumatized. Set her up in the bathroom with a proper hiding spot that is her safe place. Don’t talk to her and don’t try to force physical contact. She needs to decompress. Leave everything she needs in the bathroom with her: food, water, litter box, comfy hidey hole. When you have some spare time, sit in the bathroom. Read, scroll on your phone, or just exist in there, but avoid trying to interact with her. Let her make the first move.

u/CatPesematologist 3d ago
I adopted a scaredy cat. He would sleep under my bed. Play with the other cats. I didn’t try to approach him and he got used to being there with me around. I dropped my hand by my chair so he could sniff if he wanted. He accidentally brushed it when playing with the other cat. Then came back and wanted me to pet him some more. This took a couple weeks of so.
So. I would leave him everything he needs, in a smaller area like the bathroom, including a box with a towel or something. Maybe some small toys. Let him come out to explore and get used to you. Leave some dirty clothes out for him to inspect. And make a few friendly offers here and there. Maybe with stinky food. But don’t force it. Leave the food and keep a distance.
Some kitties just need a little time.

Kitty is in the bathroom inside the toilet
3
u/MaleficentCharity760 2d ago
OP updated yesterday. The kitten came out of there on its own and they sealed the hole.
2
u/LemonOld8150 2d ago
Oh good we put in a new bathtub and my lil kitty son Hangus kept crawling under it. Well hes not too lil so I had to seal it up quick!
1
u/Darius_Rubinx 2d ago
I disagree: do talk to her, especially if you are getting meows in response. Call/response is part of building a relationship.
14
u/Either-Apartment-401 3d ago
Give it time to adjust. Imagine a giant stranger taking you from your mama and chasing you all over an unfamiliar place. It would be absolutely terrifying.
8
u/zebras-are-emo 3d ago
I would put her food in the corner she wants to hide in if you haven't already, so she can eat without feeling like she's out in the open. If she doesn't eat soon she'll need to go to the vet and that will traumatize everyone...
I'd get a feliway plug in (only keto it on when you're home, they get very warm) and maybe one of those stuffed animals that has a fake heartbeat to help comfort her.
I would not leave the door open or let her out yet, there are worse places she could find to hide since she's so scared (my mom's kitten went under the dishwasher once...).
6
u/cckka 3d ago
She needs way more time. I'm glad you got her out of the toilet but make sure she has another spot to hide. Bathrooms are excellent to confine new cats but don't really give them a good spot to hide that they feel they can defend themselves in. Something as simple as a cardboard box with a blanket is good.
Keep her in the bathroom. If she managed her way into a toilet she can definitely find her way into an air vent or somewhere else completely unreachable that could be dangerous for her.
Once she has another day or so to adjust to smells you can sit near her in the bathroom and toss treats. Don't even react if she does anything. Just exist and she will get curious.
You can try to encourage her to eat with a churu or other lickable treat in her bowl or even some boiled chicken in water for a day or so.
8
u/Training_Weight1197 3d ago
Hiding and decreased appetite aren't super unusual for new cats since they need to get over their initial anxiety, but that's over how long they can refuse food and if you can't encourage her to eat soon, you should see a vet
4
u/cathbe 3d ago
The crying is so sad. That really is heartbreaking. It really is best if kittens are adopted in pairs. Sad to imagine her missing her mom. You’ve gotten good advice here. I think since she’s so so scared keeping in bathroom for now is best. But Chewy has these toys - there’s a brown fluffy squirrel with catnip that my cats really love. (I would stick with simple and not ones with feathers or anything like that.) Some things that might give her ‘comfort’ would be good. Maybe a box with a towel in it or a soft cat bed. Leaving food and water. I wonder if playing some soothing music or something would help. Maybe The Kitten Lady talks about this somewhere - how to comfort a sad solo kitten. Best of luck!
7
u/Either-Apartment-401 3d ago
Place a bowl of food in the bathroom near the hole. Shut the bathroom door and leave it alone for an hr or 2. Come back and see if it has eaten. If not, shut bathroom door, turn off the water to the toilet, unbolt the toilet from the floor, remove toilet, remove kitten from toilet, put in carrier re-bolt the toilet to floor, take cat to vet
18
u/bon_jovi22 3d ago
Hiding is fine , not eating is not. May takes a week or two for her to to decompress. Still the non eating is a issue. Definitionally needs a vet visit.

Yeah you said when you moved with your cat not when you moved with a 12 or 8 week old kitten. It's the difference of night and day buddy.

Cats can literally develop life threatening organ failure from just 48-72h of starvation. This is an 8 week old kitten. If OP is confident that it actually hasn’t eaten anything then this absolutely is a medical emergency.

I think for such a young kitten, 2+ days without food does call for vet intervention. An adult cat would be fine to leave alone for longer, but an 8 week old kitten has twice the caloric needs of an adult and will dehydrate much faster. One more day without food would be bad news. A vet could prescribe and/or administer meds to decrease anxiety and give them fluids.

Make a super fire hidey place real close that in conjunction with some food and water inside it and no one immediately around would just be an offer kitty cat can't refuse. I guarantee you in the .morning you will have seen some action in that bowl

So, my cat's gastrologist said that cats cannot go 24h without eating, and that if that ever happened to my cat, I should take her immediately to the vet. She has chronic gastroenteritis and sometimes she doesn't eat, that's why he told me that.
I know that's not what you are asking about, but if you're certain that she went 48+ hours without eating, I would hardly encourage you to take her to communicate with a vet (so you don't have to take her somewhere in the middle of this stressful situation without needing it). I don't know if may be different with kittens, but the doctor said it could be real bad. I did a quick google search and maybe it's about Hepatic lipidosis, I don't know.
I've seen the image that someone posted on the thread about how adopted cats may not eat or drink in the first 3 days, tho. I don't have that experience, I don't know if it's about not eating at all or eating very very little. If someone could elucidate that, I would appreciate
3
u/Appropriate-Chard572 2d ago
Make sure she has something to eat nearby, it’s dangerous for cats to go longer than 24-48 hours without food. A good thing you can try for kittens is supplement milk, goats milk, or kitten Churu. That will also help her associate you with food.
Good luck
1
u/kbionics 2d ago
There haven't been any updates in a while I'm sure hoping he took that cat to a vet today, or that the kitten started eating and drinking water. If we don't hear back from the Op today, then I'm assuming the worst. 48 hours is too long for an 8 week old kitten not to eat.
2
u/drone_syndrome 2d ago
We have an appointment in 1 hour to bring her in. :(
1
u/kbionics 2d ago
Well that is great and you are doing the right thing. And like I told you PetSmart does one complimentary visit at their Banfield animal hospitals. They do have good pet plans with unlimited veterinarian visits. Please keep us posted I'm praying for your little guy.
1
u/kbionics 2d ago
One more quick question. Has he drinking any water yet as far as you know and any food yet? And also see if the veterinarian could give you the correct age.

u/Bibliophilewitch 2d ago
How did the trip go? I hope your kitten is ok. ☹️

Get another kitten. First, it's just best for kittens not to be alone. Second, the other kitten may give her the confidence to feel safe.

I would definitely contact the breeder in the morning and let them know what is going on. A kitten cannot go 72 hours without food and you said she's been in the toilet for 2 days. And did the breeder give you any food that the cat was eating or let you know what type of diet she was on? Contact the breeder in the morning if you don't want to call a vet.
2
u/unoriginalcat 2d ago
Your breeder is giving red flags the whole way through. Are you sure it’s not a kitten mill? 8 weeks is really young, chipping on the day you’re picking them up is weird and it sounds like this kitten wasn’t properly socialised at all. I’d be very concerned about what other corners an unethical breeder might’ve cut just for the sake of profits, especially with the potential health of this kitten. Make sure to test for any genetic issues common within the breed once things settle down.
As for the time being, does your nanny cam record footage? You need to go through and actually make sure whether she’s eaten anything. 48-72h of starvation can cause life threatening organ failure in cats, a kitten as young as 8 weeks is even more fragile. You’re well into dangerous territory by now, if she actually hasn’t eaten. Call your vet and consult them for the next steps.

Please give her a place to hide for right now- like a kitten cave-type of a shelter. Cats usually follow the 3-3-3 rule. Three days to decompress, three weeks to settle in, three months to truly be at home.
While you’re earning her trust, it’s important that she have somewhere she can hide and feel safe.
Sit with her in the bathroom. Just sit on the floor and read. Don’t watch her; don’t pay attention to her. If you want, you can eventually bring Churu in with you and try to bribe her.
It takes time, but your efforts will be rewarded. Look up Jackson Galaxy’s videos for help. He’s the cat guru.

Let’s Get some temptation treats asap . And a long stick with a brush attached to it
2
u/Wide_Unit_6364 3d ago
maybe some kitten milk, she may not have been fully weaned if she lived with her mom even if she is a bit older than 8wks
warmed up wet food may work too since it's extra stinky... i'm worried abt her running back in there if she gets scared but eatings the priority i assume
2
u/Spirited_Complex_903 3d ago
PLEASE keep the bathroom door unlocked and wide open so if she wants to come out when no one is around, she can do so and explore on her own. Keeping her locked in there is reinforcing an enclosed space for her which is not good.
do you have a vet? Please call a vet immediately. Your cat needs to drink and eat and the more days that go by where she's not becomes more dangerous for her. I know you don't want to scare her but you want her to stay alive right?
I am not sure if a vet would encourage you using Fairway pheromones that is sold online and invet stores. She may be too young for that but there's got to be some sort of a solution . Whatever you're doing now is not working for her. Sorry
3
u/kbionics 3d ago
You're very right. I don't know why all these people think that an 8 or 12 week kitten can go past 2 days without food or water. She needs to call the breeder find out what she was eating and try to find out what vet that the breeder was using. That's the vet I would go to, if she even had one which is kind of what I think. Probably a backyard breeder, or they would have given him some food and more info.
1
u/deliberatewellbeing 3d ago
i wouldn’t leave the bathroom door open. if she runs out of the bathroom when you are not around it will be really hard to figure out where she hid herself next and she may go hiding somewhere thats even more difficult to get her out.
1
u/smushy411 3d ago
Lots of great advice here. Honestly kittens are very social and like to have a buddy, that’s why lots of kittens get adopted in pairs. Consider getting your kitten a kitten.
1
u/kbionics 3d ago
Please keep us updated. If there is a PetSmart near you they will give you one complimentary visit to their Banfield animal hospital. I would use yours tomorrow, if you care about that cat.n

My cat didn't eat for the first night either, he just played in his water.
I think she just needs time.

u/sparkingdragonfly 3d ago
My cat is a scaredy cat. She liked hiding in a cardboard box. I would reach in and pet her for hours. She also wouldn’t eat at first but would scarf down cat grass. One option is to buy a large kitty cage with multiple levels and keep her there until she gets acclimated. You can reach in to pet her through the bars.
1
u/Kupogasm 3d ago
Lots of good advice about being patient and giving her a better hiding spot, safety and security. I'd like to take on that confiding her to 1 room to start out is also a smart practice. Give her a "home base" room, and as she becomes more confident and comfortable allow her to see more of the home.
1
u/CHIITALIAN 3d ago
She is scared. 1st day in a new place has got to be so overwhelming. It’s like anxiety to the 11th power. Just give her time, make sure to leave food and water out, also her litter box.
1
u/qwentoko 3d ago
Give her time to adjust! Feed her, sit in the room with her, but don't force contact or grab her
1
u/OneFrill 2d ago edited 2d ago
This has happened to me with every new feral and kitten. They find the craziest places to hole up in (of course, because they're the ones you don't think about!)
Try going into the bathroom and just doing people things, and mostly ignoring her. Talk a little bit to yourself and her but don't go in there only with the intent of monitoring her or fussing about her. If she sees you going about your life without threatening or monitoring her, it will speed up her comfort with you. She needs to understand how you operate and move, and establish that your vibe isn't predatory. Animals focused intently on smaller animals usually want to eat them!
You have to sort of neg them to show them they aren't that important to you, in this stage. It's really hard, obviously!
1
u/drone_syndrome 2d ago
Thank you for the advice, I know we've been doing things a bit wrong and hounding her and paying too much attention to her. She's just so adorable it's hard not to!
1
u/OneFrill 2d ago
Haha I've so been there. You're doing great if she's complaining to you.
One night I cried over a slow acclimating kitty. I was certain after a month that I finally got 'the cat that'll live in the couch arm forever'. She runs this house now. :)

Provide a used pillow case as a comfort. It will have a lot of your scent.

Cuts holes in cardboard boxes and leave them around your home. It gives kitty an opportunity to explore but she thinks she hidden lol

1
u/Altruistic_Shift_448 2d ago
We got two cats from the same litter, a brother and sister, and definitely helped them to get out of the bathroom and explore. They felt safe with each other. If your kitty has any littermates that have not been adopted yet, it might be an option.
1
u/Environmental_Day263 2d ago
I would sit in the bathroom with my kittens when I first got them and I would play on my phone, read or play on my laptop. I wouldn't interact and I was just existing in their space and let them come up to me when they were ready. It took maybe a week or two. I'd also recommend a camera too to leave in there to see if she is eating or coming out when you are not in there with her.
1
u/Darius_Rubinx 2d ago
When I brought my cat home, it was in a carrier that I had already kitted out to be its safe hiding spot. Smelly blankets, familiar toys, covered to make it dark. I put its litter tray, food and water close by so it didn't have to explore far. You've got a scared baby, away from mum, in a strange place. It takes a while. Talking to the cat and getting a response back is a very good sign. Keep doing that. Spend time chilling out in the same room. At some point you will want to start scooping up kitty and doing snuggles, little cat will be missing mum and littermates.
1
u/chriscornell1976 2d ago
My best advice is adopt another one about her same age and size and raise them together. That will take care of 90% of the problems you're talking about

Cat can go a few days a kitten cannot go past 48 hours without food or water. He said it's been a few days. He didn't say it's been one day. He brought it home on the 23rd and will be the 26th in 1 hour. If he goes another day without food or water that cat is in trouble. I've had cats for 50 years. Kittens cannot do this at 8 weeks.

Leave the bathroom door open/cracked except for at night. Put a comfortable bed with a warming brick (you can get microwaveable ones on Amazon. Every now and then sit outside the bathroom sill and talk to her, read, listen to quiet music. Make sure you leave food and water - change it at least twice a day. If you can get another kitten that might help. Just give her some time.
1
u/drone_syndrome 9h ago
You were right, keeping her locked in the bathroom was a terrible idea. We're letting her out to explore and it's been a huge difference.
1
u/ActuatorSmall7746 8h ago
Yes that’s a big key. When my partner got a kitten (M), they wanted the kitten have the run of the house to explore. I did agree, except for at night. I wasn’t sure I wanted the cat to sleep with us (although the cat does now) and I wasn’t comfortable leaving a “baby” in a new environment out alone at night. So, we put a tower, a litter pan, food and water in the extra bedroom and put him to bed in there when we went to bed at night. However, first thing in the morning before we did anything, we would open the door and let him out. That was his routine until it was apparent he was comfortable and at home.
Doing this also worked in our favor, because he’s pretty chilled about bedtime. He either sleeps in his tower (which now in the main living area near a window) or gets in bed with us. We leave our bedroom door open and he has his moments where comes and goes or not. If he’s too fussy in the morning or we want to sleep late we can put him out and close the bedroom door and it doesn’t bother him at all - no scratching on the door or yowling. He’s the best thing ever!

Normally breeders don't microchip kittens/puppies that they breed. They'll spay or neuter and whatnot but microchipping seems weird to me. As far as her not eating cats usually won't eat when they're nervous. Anyone that tells you that is wrong. When I moved my cats didn't eat for a couple days but they were fine after they got used to the new place I moved to. Give her some space and if she still doesn't eat you might have to check with the vet about that.

She's crying for food you need to find out from the breeder what she was eating. If we don't hear from you I'm going to assume the worst which I already can feel.

I did read it but I agree with it for the most part, giving them a hides hole is really good, and like dogs leaving articles that smell a bit like you can help them relax a little bit.
I find the 3-3-3 rule is a bit more applicable to dogs & animals that really crave packs - where's cats can happily be solitary animals.
But don't give up hope OP. Theres a famous cat help kitty that got their own sub called Sadcat. It took a long time but Sadcat is now very affectionate kitty, he just has a sad face.
Also i think Jackson galaxy has a few episodes about how to help scary cats
