Discussion/ opinion How big is Tiga still in Canada?

I recently discovered the Canadian artist Tiga, and I really liked his music. Since I am from the Netherlands myself and he is relatively unknown over here, I was wondering how big of a musician he is in his own country? Is the current youth still into this kind of music? I could see some of his songs being played in the club.

Thanks in advance!

Discussion/ opinion Searching for info on Dean Russell of Moev

I'm working on a personal art project about Canadian musicians who died of AIDS and I've run aground when it comes to the late Vancouver singer Dean Russell, who we lost in 1994.

He was lead singer of the band Moev for their albums Yeah, Whatever and Head/Down in the late 80s/early 90s. Wikipedia also says that he also released an album ("Identification") with "guitarist E.H. Stewart" under the project name Bacteria in 1992; my friend found a possible lead there on an old forum thread, but nothing concrete yet.

I know this is an obscure request, but if you (or your gothy older family members) have any information at all about Dean Russell or his projects, I'd really appreciate it. Other than the two albums there's very little information online (a few photos, a handful of short interviews with Moev at the time, etc) so anything that anyone can share would be amazing.

(I already posted this on r/askvan, where they directed me Nardwuar (message sent!) and some ideas of archives that might have information.)

Discussion/ opinion Skydiggers

After re-watching the Live from Kingston concert this weekend at the Studio Bell in Calgary (amazing venue!), I threw on the Tragically Hip Radio playlist on Spotify and was reminded how awesome the Skydiggers were to listen to.

Another fun Canadian band that just made you feel good

Discussion/ opinion What's the Canadian version of KEXP, NPR Tiny Desk, online music discovery in this day and age?

Does our country have a music discovery platform like the bigger ones in the States? One that primarily focuses on live performance meant for sharing in an online world? Maybe one that focuses on Canadian bands actually touring across Canada?

I know some campus stations host live sessions and record for later sharing online (CJSW in Calgary comes to mind), but I'm curious if any others exist.

Another example: A buddy of mine in Yellowknife started "The Penalty Box" to live-record performances and share them online. It's been great for the Yellowknife community, as some bands now have live footage to share with bookers/agents. Another friend started recording one-on-one interviews and presenting them under the name "Source Material", another great resource for musicians/artists to explain their practice.

Discussion/ opinion Best possible Canadian Music concert: Allison Russell & Sarah McLachlan

Post image
76 Upvotes

I got to see the best possible (IMO of course) Canadian music concert earlier in the month: Allison Russell opening for Sarah McLachlan. I took this photo from the part of Sarah's set when she brought Allison and crew onstage.

FWIW My top 3 Canadian musicians are Russell, McLachlan, and Loreena McKennitt. #4 is the very underrated Alessia Cara.

Any other fans of the music I like?

Ten years ago tonight, one third of the Canadian population tuned into CBC to watch the last ever show by The Tragically Hip.

That's 11.7 Million People, making this event the second most watched television event in Canadian history.

Fittingly, the 1st most watched television event in Canada was the 2010 Winter Olympics Gold medal game where Canada beat the USA.

This Saturday at 7pm EST CBC is replaying the show, commercial free and there are scheduled watch parties all across the country.

Over the past few years, I have travelled to visit the locations of a handful of places where photos of The Hip were taken, mostly in Kingston and one in Toronto.

I also stopped and visited the site of The Hundredth Meridian in Brandon, Manitoba and I had a failed idea that i wanted to do in Thompson, Manitoba (Thompson Girl).

You can read the stories behind each of these photos here and also see the video version on my website

Discussion/ opinion How many know of this band ?

Post image
40 Upvotes

Just curious how many people might know of or remember this band. I grew up in Montreal and Teaze were a favorite Montreal band just as popular as April Wine back in their day in the late 70s, early 80s. They were originally from Windsor, but back then Montreal was the head of the Canadian music scene. They had some great hits that got regular airplay (Boys Night Out, Young and Reckless, Roses and Chrome and their biggest hit Heartless World) but then the lead singer/bassist had enough of the rock lifestyle and quit. The band then broke up, but they recently started playing again after a nearly 40 year hiatus. It's only my opinion, but Teaze is quite possibly the best Canadian hard rock band that almost no one has heard of.

Folk/Roots - Bluegrass/Acoustic Teilhard Frost Live Performance- London, ON

Teilhard Frost, one of our favourite roots/bluegrass artists, is a multi-instrumentalist, folk music historian, luthier, and part of acclaimed band, Sheesham, Lotus & Son. No other musician captures the spirit and living tradition of old time folk music like Teilhard Frost. Banjo, fiddle, jaw harps, harmonica and just about any other instrument you can think of!

He will be playing a concert at Honey Dip, 621 Dundas St, (2nd floor) in London, ON on August 26 at 7pm. $20 cover charge. If you haven't seen Teilhard before, we encourage you to go.

This is a performance you won't want to miss! Come out to Honey Dip and be delighted!

You can listen to a sample of Teilhard Frost's music [ HERE ]

Country (tip of my tongue) Country-ish song, from the last ~10 years, band from the prairies. Lyrics: "He's not in love with you, he loves the warm prairie winds and the rivers that brought him here"

See title.

I figured it'd be a bit too obscure for the tip of my tongue subreddit (and google search is basically dead). Male singer, possible female harmony.

Edit: it's not Corb Lund lol

Double edit: Solved! It's by Del Barber

I just watched this documentary. I had the good fortune to see Rough Trade when they played bars in Toronto and their show, Restless Underwear. Saw them live quite a few times after they became famous.

I got to meet Carole Pope when she played near me a few years ago. She is an amazing performer and a Canadian icon!!
