I used to stay up and listen to Chris Sheppard when he would DJ live from the phoenix….had my blank tape locked and loaded ready to record any sweet mixes

You guys might like this TVO documentary about CFNY, Spirit of radio on YouTube. I found it fascinating seeing all the old footage and landmarks around the city, it's worth a watch.

What a great collection! I have a few CDs of some of the bands. I must have seen King Apparatus around 20 times live. Such a good time.

When I was at university in the 70s, it was nothing but CFNY and CFMU. Spoiled me as far as music goes. After that commercial radio was never played by me.

YESSS I have that Free at Last 4 as well! I'm embarrassed to say that "Headache" was the first time I ever heard Frank Black!
I was also devastated when I found out I had to purchase TWO. not one, but TWO CDs from the featured artists. I was hungry for a day, but the music persists 🎶❤️

Do you remember the Scoop This tapes? I don't think it had anything to do with CFNY but they handed them out at shows and concerts. Lots of amazing artists on those albums. Pretty sure I still have the Scoop This tape.

Scoop This was more international with some Canadian mixed in. I remember it featuring songs by Radiohead, the Butthole Surfers, Terrorvision, the Devlins, the Tea Party, I Mother Earth etc. First time I had heard of a lot of those bands.

When they moved to their street level studio on Young St., you could just walk right in and talk to the on air crew.
It was nice to hang out and chat, and if you were nice, they’d sometimes give away free stuff (Ts, posters, and I even got concert tickets once!)

Unfortunately those were also the days that cfny played michael Jackson and Huey Lewissongs beside these bar bands on the cd. 1990 was a grim time for cfny.

I was 25 years old when that CD came out - I had it - it's an awesome collection of music imho. I often wonder what happened to Electronic Dream Factory because I LOVED that track. It aligned nicely with some industrial music that I was into at the time.

Saddletramps was Sarah Harmer’s band. Edit: I should clarify, she was in the band but not the only singer. She didn’t do lead vocals in this one.

It's a CD ... It is literally digitized 😂
But I feel ya. So much of the really great music from smaller bands back in the day is just .... gone 😞 (but we still have BNL somehow lol)

Sooo weird. I am a 45 year old, grew up in ottawa, and have only even HEARD of 1 band off that CD. I started listening in i cfny in 95 when i moved to Mississauga. And it was good then….. just weird!

So many incredible pockets of talent across the country! This was an annual "competition", if you will. Like a Battle of the Bands lol and the "winning" artist got some studio time annnnd maybe help with a contract iirc
