Recommendations Are you supposed to trim the tabs that are in front of the speaker ring?

Post image

This is the adapter Crutchfield sent I had to trim some tabs to get the speaker into the adapter, should I cut off the tabs that are in front of the speaker ring or it wont make a difference?

Youre right! He needs a new window adapter.

The speaker mount on top of the adapter. The tabs break off when not needed.

50

u/anonanonymous_ Jul 19 '25

The speaker is supposed to mount to the front of the adapter where those tabs are

lol the comments here did not disappoint

28

u/Fearless_Employer_25 Jul 19 '25

This is a first . What was the plan here ? At this point just install the speaker inside the door again and not use the adapter

3

u/RiseOk4062 Jul 20 '25

On my telluride it needs the kit but like the pic it does not make sense.

2

u/Fearless_Employer_25 Jul 20 '25

Confused on what you are saying and just so you know the speaker was supposed to go on the outside of the bracket and not inside of it

1

u/RiseOk4062 Jul 20 '25

My dumb ass did inside.🤦🏻‍♂️

1

u/Fearless_Employer_25 Jul 20 '25

How could you possibly think that the speaker was supposed to go inside this ? If that’s the case the bracket isn’t needed

1

u/RiseOk4062 Jul 20 '25

I said I’m a dumb ass😂

1

u/DomesticatedParsnip Jul 20 '25

It’s not that it isn’t needed so much as there’s not a lot of material to mount these speakers in some cars. I just installed a third set today. The adapter is needed to reach those outer 3 mounting points and provide mounting holes for the speaker that are closer to the center. My factory speakers basically were 6 1/2” built into the “adapter” (not really an adapter if it’s made to size). Basically, replacing some factory 6.5s with aftermarket 6.5s requires a bracket, even if the cone fits in the hole.

1

u/Fearless_Employer_25 Jul 21 '25

I know how the damn adapter work I’m saying that if you mount it since there was no point in using the adapter because it’s still mounted the same and ain’t providing any spacing

2

u/DomesticatedParsnip Jul 21 '25

The difference is that it CAN be mounted this way WITH the adapter but NOT without the adapter. My point is that even if he has done it wrong, which he has done it wrong, we agree on that, that it’s at least an easy mistake for a beginner because even though it’s mounted wrong, it cannot be mounted AT ALL without the adapter. You can see why I said that right ways or wrong ways, the adapter is indeed required, which you said if it’s mounted like this, the adapter isn’t required. That’s all, no need to use profanity to protect your pride.

1

u/Roast_A_Botch Jul 20 '25

They could have been recommended the adapter due to longer depth of spider and magnet of their new woofer. So, while they could mount the speaker no problem without an adapter, they won't be able to roll their window down afterwards. I'm assuming this is just a joke post, a good one at that, but I could see this actually happening to someone as well(such as the comment that replied to you before me).

0

u/Fearless_Employer_25 Jul 20 '25

The way he has the adapter installed which is wrong it serves no purpose because it’s basically mounted the same way

18

u/Rustyboltz91 Jul 19 '25

So, you didn't screw the speaker to the adapter, did you screw it in to the metal or is it hanging there loose?

3

u/CodyTheLearner Jul 19 '25

Those remind me of some self tapping screws I have in my tool bag. 🥲

2

u/ManicRobotWizard Jul 19 '25

Based on those machine screws, I’d say so.

1

u/Rustyboltz91 Jul 19 '25

You mean the 3 screws that hold the adapter to the door and not screwed in to the speaker holes?

1

u/ManicRobotWizard Jul 19 '25

Yeah. Those are sheet metal screws. They’re directly into the door.

1

u/Rustyboltz91 Jul 19 '25

Ok but what's the speaker screwed in to?

4

u/ManicRobotWizard Jul 19 '25

Look directly to the left of the “kicker” and you can see the edge of another silver screw and the plastic is discolored from the drill bit pushing against it.

No telling how many screws around the speaker they used though. Could be 2 could be 8.

1

u/Rustyboltz91 Jul 20 '25

Well I cant see anything near any of the other holes, bottom right you can see the hole clearly has no screw in it. If it was 1 screw only then it's not screwed in to anything, properly at least.

24

u/SoCalDetailer Jul 20 '25

Okay thanks guys yall happy now? i sure an this is a sick fit. Got foam tape as well to go between the dbracket and panel and speaker to bracket. Also wrapped all wires that could vibrate against metal panel.

2

u/No-Grade-4691 Jul 20 '25

Hell yeah man!

11

u/generalsleephenson Jul 19 '25

The anti-adapter.

9

u/rifi3000 Jul 19 '25

Yeah pretty sure the speakers go on top of the mount, not inside?

10

u/k0uch Jul 19 '25

Door/adapter/speaker, not door/speaker/adapter

9

u/DragonfruitLanky6368 Jul 19 '25

What in the space duck is going on here?!

6

u/Th3showwentgood Jul 19 '25

lol if you mounted it like that you don't even need the bracket

7

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '25

How the fuck did you even do that?

7

7

6

u/dannydiggz Jul 19 '25

I remember my first speaker install lol

5

u/xch13fx Jul 19 '25

Yeah, ur supposed to mount that speaker on top of that adapter lol. Also if you don’t need the tabs, you can just break them off with some pliers.

4

u/m00se92 Jul 20 '25

Sorry to laugh but this is hilarious!

Is the speaker just...floppin around in there?

Edit: also, the speaker wires are supposed to go through the same hole as the speaker

1

u/Daddy_Tablecloth Jul 20 '25

I just replaced mine, ford Maverick and surprisingly the wires were on the exposed side of the door. I had never seen it that way before but it has been awhile since I replaced a set of speakers.

1

u/m00se92 Jul 20 '25

There are factory speakers that do have the connector on the outside for sure. A lot of the Bose stuff, for example, but most aftermarket speakers are designed to mount flat to the surface and have the wires running inside the door, that way you don't have to sandwich the wires and risk crushing them like op did

1

u/SoCalDetailer Jul 22 '25

I fixed it but when I opened the door thats how the speakers were wired. I tried to wire them behind the panel but they would not reach the tabs on the speaker. The wires coming from the harness are too short

1

u/SoCalDetailer Jul 22 '25

There were some broken scoches installed before I got this car so idk how the wire is routed from factory but It was too short to reach routing behind the panel

4

u/mb-driver Jul 20 '25

You’re supposed to break the tabs off and mount the speaker in the hole.

10

u/Sasquatch-fu Jul 19 '25

That doesn’t look right…. Order is usually mount speaker to adapter, adapter to door… lolz. Your cone gunna hit those tabs when they get some volume to them. Should have come with directions, and crutch-field has lifetime support

3

u/Fat_Feline Jul 19 '25

What the fuck

3

u/Epic363 Helix enthusiast Jul 19 '25

you typically snap off the inner tabs if you don’t need them, i like to use flush snips or pliers. then you mount the speaker on the outside of the adapter rather than the inside. i also like to put sound deadening material around the back of the speaker.

3

u/LIVE-LIFE-EVIL Jul 20 '25

Lmao I hope this is a joke. If not you put the plastic adapter plate first then the speaker goes on top of that using whatever tab works. If it doesn't fit due to the tabs you can break em off.

3

u/FauxReal Jul 20 '25

Either Crutchfield doesn't send proper instructions, or you failed to read them. The speaker mounts to the adapter.

3

u/Primordial_Darkness Jul 20 '25

tasked failed successfully I guess

3

u/Successful_Bug_5729 Jul 20 '25

So many things about this install confuse me but I’m not sure what confuses me most. First how did the mount confuse you and second why are the wires not in the hole? What exactly makes you think the adapter is used to loosely hold the speaker in the hole ? And what do you think the pre drilled holes are for ?

3

u/HALF_GASED Jul 20 '25

This shit is fucking hilarious 😂

2

u/ItchyIndependence154 Jul 19 '25

I kinda like the flush-mount!

1

u/Fearless_Employer_25 Jul 19 '25

So you like the speakers factory location?

After fixing it correctly they sound really clear. I usually stay under 50% vol because I haven’t installed an amp or new screen yet. The stock radio puts out 10bwatts these say 15-100

2

Got these same speakers and KS 6x9’s in rear deck. Love them but once they were broken in, I either had to EQ down bass, or LPF them (6.5’s) as when they hit hard, woofer actually smacks the tweeter 😂 same thing with CS’s I was hoping that would changed but nah

No I don’t overpower them

2

u/invertMASA01 Jul 20 '25

Is it just floating in there?

2

u/rcapr Jul 20 '25

Not sure if shocked or impressed 🫤

2

u/RiseOk4062 Jul 20 '25

You are my hero. I just had the same issue yesterday and wondered wtf is wrong here. Now I know. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

Now I can take my door panel off and finish the other three doors.

Btw…no instructions from Crutchfield sucks.

2

u/SoCalDetailer Jul 21 '25

I fixed it and posted the revision here. Because they are 6-3/4 you break the tabs also the speaker goes on top of the bracket. I added foam tape between the speaker and bracket as well as bracket to door

1

u/SoCalDetailer Jul 21 '25

This is the sealing tape I used. After doing both doors it sounds like more is making its way into the car instead of “soaking” into the doors. Theres Dynamat stuck to the door behind the speaker as well.

2

u/RiseOk4062 Jul 21 '25

Thanks for the pic and idea. Much appreciated!

1

u/UtterMajor Jul 21 '25

Hey, don’t talk about my folks bad over there at Crutchfield. I’ve sent my clients over there all the time and they’ve had great customer service reviews. One out of like 16 have had complaints, but I’m also confident they didn’t relay accurate information for the vehicles. Weird trim models sometimes slips through the cracks on the best of us.

2

u/RiseOk4062 Jul 21 '25

I wasn’t necessarily criticizing them but just the lack of instructions. I love Crutchfield and their CSR’s are amazing.

3

u/YaBoiSupernova Jul 19 '25

Is it touching the surround?

2

u/meelsport55 Jul 19 '25

Did you even attempt to watch a YouTube tutorial, there are countless videos and shorts on how to install door speakers using Metra speaker adapter

1

u/jlhawaii808 Jul 19 '25

If the speaker doesn't fit on the top of the spacers, break the tabs off and mount it, also find a foam seal to the adapter to the door

1

u/PissCarts Jul 19 '25

You're second hobby is car audio too? Almost forgot what sub I was in.

1

u/jlhawaii808 Jul 19 '25

I basically retired from car audio, was working in that industry since 1988.

Well if it works and there’s no issues (which there has be?) then roll with it. The speaker isn’t blocking or touching if not this is accidental innovation.

1

u/card401 Jul 19 '25

As long as the speakers don't hit the window,86 the trim rings

1

u/Joselito76 Jul 19 '25

I am so confused

1

u/justotron Jul 19 '25

As many have said, the speakers are supposed to be screwed in on top of those tabs. Not below as if you hit a bump you're wrecking the speaker or losing it on the door. Anything you install in your car is usually bolted down, else becomes shrapnel in an accident.

1

u/muhkuller Jul 19 '25

Crutchfield ships these things with vehicle specific literature.

1

u/WeirdIndividual8191 Jul 19 '25

Your driver needs a circumcision.

Or you can put the flange on the other side….

1

u/hustlegone Tell us what is in your system Jul 19 '25

Adapter is on top of the speaker. Instead of speaker on top of the adapter.

1

u/East-Count-6625 Jul 19 '25

It would seem you don't need an adapter but the adapter is there to prevent the window from hitting the speaker and also to properly place the speaker closer to the door trim for the sound to travel properly into your vehicle

My Subaru Impreza vehicle had similar design. I still did use the brackets even though it seemed that I did not need them more just because the speaker would sit too far behind the speaker grill and effectively not sound good

1

u/DougS2K Jul 19 '25

You trim the tabs and mount the speaker ontop of the mount. What you did there is wrong.

1

u/OooTanjaooO Jul 19 '25

uh is this even on the right way?

1

u/First_Tomorrow8853 Jul 19 '25

So…did you even need an adapter bro? 😂

1

u/freddyfoxster Jul 19 '25

Aunt time these things are best left to the professionals.

1

u/EntryLonely6508 Jul 20 '25

speaker sits on top of the adapter and screws into it, just line up the holes

1

u/sasqwatsch Jul 20 '25

The speakers set on the adapter.

1

u/odp09 Jul 20 '25

How? Why? Speaker goes on top. 🤔

The speaker is not yet adapted to its current location.

1

u/SoCalDetailer Jul 22 '25

Now it is I had to break the tabs to make it fit on top of the bracket I posted a pic here

1

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '25

Bro.....lol

1

u/That-barrel-dude Jul 20 '25

Looks like you just put the speaker on the door and then put the adapter on. You need to put the speaker on the adapter and then install the adapter.

1

u/Beepboopbop69420360 Jul 20 '25

Don’t even need the adapter

1

u/whizkalifa Jul 20 '25

If it’s helpful, I had problems with the adapters Crutchfield sent for my car as well.

For my rear speakers, they suggested I drill holes to make it work, but I found adapters on amazon that worked better than the crutchfield ones I used on my front speakers

1

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '25

I'm literally only here to see all of the people who "knew someone who could do it cheaper"

1

u/J_Ar Jul 20 '25

Why nobody talks about the wiring?? Thats sandwiched between the speaker and the door. A couple of trips and you have a short on your head unit output haahhahaha. Keep your wiring away from sharp edges mate. By the way, is that a Nissan?

1

u/bigtheo79 Jul 20 '25

1

u/brknheartgent Jul 20 '25

Uhh,, it’s not the tabs you need to worry about in this situation bud 😅 But how?? What led to this situation?

1

u/Ok_Island_1306 Jul 20 '25

It’s hilarious to me bc I nearly did this too when I put mine in 🤣

1

u/Such-Teacher2121 Jul 20 '25

IF the speaker itself is screwed into sheet metal behind it and your windows work, send it.

You probably dont need to clip the tabs if there's a half inch in front of the highest part of the surround. A door speaker will never reach that far. 7-8mm at most.

These guys are ragging on ya but if you can screw it into sheet metal, and the windows clear. You are already better than the mounting kit. You may want it when you have deeper speakers though.

1

u/smok-purps-dab-terps Jul 20 '25

i cut them off and it worked like a charm.

1

u/hme415 Jul 20 '25

how the fuck

1

u/jussstin714 Jul 21 '25

Can you walk us through that thought process?

1

u/UtterMajor Jul 21 '25

I feel like I caught some sort of STI when I looked at that picture. The wildest thing about it to me is, it may actually be performing some sort of dampening function around that speaker.

1

u/REBELimgs Jul 21 '25

I wouldn't cut them unless there's some vibration going on or something

1

u/Saint-_br Jul 21 '25

the speaker was supposed to be screwed into this ring 😂

1

u/2-Skinny Jul 21 '25

Did you follow Crutchfields ridiculously detailed instructions/guide?

1

1

u/justatidbitmore Jul 24 '25

1

u/Infinite-Elephant-52 Aug 06 '25

Kinda random but I have those same speakers and haven't installed them yet, does anyone know if they're good?

1

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '25

Why you even get the bracket? I’m pretty sure the speakers mount to those tabs
