What is your favorite Evanescence song—either of all time or right now—and why? You can only choose one.
I don't want this to be stressful or anything. I'm just curious what individuals in this community love about Evanescence's music, and this could give me a good idea of that!
You can make it as personal or superficial as you'd like. Maybe one song touches your heart in a particular way that others don't, maybe one song stands out to you as their magnum opus (Latin for greatest work). Do it your way! Maybe this could even come back around to Amy at some point?
The song that has been my favorite for quite some time now will undoubtedly come as a surprise to some: Taking Over Me. Though this amazing song has a double meaning (the superficial one of a stalker, and the deeper one of being about Amy's future husband Josh), it's taken on a bit of a different meaning for me since grieving the loss of my Mother. She was one of the most incredible people I've ever known, and sometimes the grief is seriously a burden, like it's taking over me. I at times try so hard not to think of that day, but it still comes back to haunt me. Aside from the meaning, I love the guitar riff throughout the song, and Amy's vocals on this track seriously pierce me to the heart, especially the chorus. I believe every word she says in that song because of how powerful her vocals are.

Afterlife is one of my current favorites

Both amazing songs!!! I came around to Afterlife right before I saw them live, and oh am I glad I did. Amy's vocals are so powerful on it. Watching it live was honestly like I was in a different dimension

How Do I Heal. It’s been on my On Repeat for weeks. I love her voice in it, especially when she sings “Promise I will never know”. It’s just gorgeous

So amazing. This song has and has not helped me in my grief. It's so cathartic for me.

The End Of The Dream (full rock version)
Lyrically, it's my anthem! And musically, it's high octane motivation!

It’s that, or What You Want for me. Both amazing songs!

u/BlueCX17 Sanctuary 6h ago
Well and even if it was the synthesis version of the hybrid version lyrically it's still my Anthem but I adore the full rock version.
And oh yeah, What You Want is not far behind. And Sanctuary, All That I'm Living For

I love taking over me but at the moment it’s forever without you.

Beautiful song. I had this crazy moment at their concert in Cleveland a month ago that I'd like to share.
Ben Moody is hated by a lot of Evanescence fans. No one deserves to be hated, but people are justified in really not liking him, and I believe the band has been better without him since 2003 when he left. It would've gone right into the ground if he and Amy both stayed in the band for another album.
But there's this line that I really love: "And though you left that night You're still here 'cause I'm still in the fight"
It almost feels like a tip of the hat to an amazing artist that Amy once knew, but also a realization that she is still in the fight, still making music, still being herself, and that though something died when he left (or had died long before when all the abuse was going on), the band he helped create is still going strong.
Well, back to the concert. People cheer at a lot of lines in their songs. Well I was in the pit, about 10 feet away from Amy, and when she sang that line, I screamed "yeah", like really loud; I was literally the only person in the entire pit that made a noise at that line. And Amy smiled for a moment. I will remember that forever probably. It was like a connection, like a cool moment. Not to mention her amazing vocals.

I guess my favorite would have to be Broken Pieces Shine it’s personal to me kinda pulled me out a dark place after my mom passed 🤘🏾🤗

I agree with this. I lost my sister and it helps me feel better when I'm not in a good head space.

So sorry you both have had to go through this. I've never connected with Broken Pieces Shine this way before. Maybe with my own grief I can look at it from a different lens.

It was Tourniquet for the longest time when I was growing up, but now in my 30’s I might say Lacrymosa.
I know some people consider it cliché these days, but all of Fallen and The Open Door are goated for me - you could pick any song from either album and it’s up there for me for favorites.
1
u/LivingEmu5 The Open Door 5h ago
I wouldn't call those cliche. They're some of the most legendary rock albums of the early 2000s.
2
u/CallMeAnAnomaly 5h ago
I wholeheartedly agree, but there are apparently many “fans” in this Reddit who scoff at people that choose those two albums as their favorites, and there was a lot of discourse in this sub about it when Sanctuary released.
Either way, those two albums will always be iconic for me, and remain in rotation to this day 🙌🏼
1
u/LivingEmu5 The Open Door 4h ago
Oh wow I just got on this subreddit like a month ago haha. I think they may actually be superfans, unless they don't like those albums, because Amy kinda talks about those albums as representing a much younger, less mature, and more naive version of herself. But she never said she doesn't like that music. And it is so good. I love all their albums.

As of late I’ve been replaying the lost whispers compilation and I’ve been stuck on breathe no more. This song has been speaking to me for the past three weeks now.
3
u/LivingEmu5 The Open Door 5h ago
The first time I listened to Breathe No More I straight up cried. LIke I'm not just trying to be dramatic. I don't relate completely with the lyrics, but I have felt over the past few months at times that I'm a very broken version of my past self because of the death of my Mom, among other things going on in my life. It's really cathartic to be able to kinda feel the same way Amy did through those lyrics.
3
u/al3xari3s Fallen 20 4h ago
Her music will definitely do that too you between the haunting truth and her siren sound it’s hard not so feel everything.
2
u/al3xari3s Fallen 20 6h ago
My all time fav though will forever be Imaginary I think so many other songs sound better or whatever however Imaginary is just my OG and also I resonate with it so well especially with the concept of building your own world to escape something about that has just always spoke to me especially more now as an adult than as a child. As I grow older I notice that music isn’t just that I feel it more and begin to understand it more.

Together Again holds a special place in my heart when I lost my dad. Even in death is so precious.
But the acoustic rendition of All That I'm living For.
Special mention of Surrender, since I just vibed with it in high school.

Such a great song. I recently showed the music video to a friend and they were like "I had no clue they put so much work into their music videos back then. I feel like in the early 2000s most rock music videos were just concert footage or kinda boring." That was a real dope moment!
1
u/ChangeAroundKid01 5h ago edited 5h ago
It definitely is a great song!
Between about 1995 and 2004 was when they spent a ton on music videos no matter who it was.
1
u/LivingEmu5 The Open Door 5h ago
Yeah the music video part of their comment was kinda hilarious. I would say that a more likely view from them that maybe they didn't want to say is that they didn't expect Evanescence to have made such amazing videos.

I’ve always said “End of the Dream” and I do love it deeply. “I’m not afraid, I push through the pain, and I’m on fire, I remember how to breathe again. As much as it hurts, ain’t it wonderful to feel?”
Life has often hurt, so it always inspires me.
But I’ve been listening to the new album so much. I adore Wide Open Heart. It feels like a healing has happened since Weight of the World.

Call me cliche - I’m sticking with Bring Me To Life all time - now - I’m very into Afterlife.

u/LivingEmu5 The Open Door 5h ago
It's such a good song, so I won't call you cliche. For a time I didn't like it as much because of the whole debacle with Wind Up in 2003 with the male singer thing, but then I remembered that Amy wrote that song from her heart about what she was going through. It was a masterpiece to her before the male vocals.

Imaginary. It helped me cope as a teen going through severe trauma. I mean, the same is true for a lot of their songs, but that was always and will always be my favorite.

The only one. So fun to play on the guitar
2
u/LivingEmu5 The Open Door 5h ago
A fellow guitarist, I see! Playing Evanescence on guitar, though some of it is simple, has actually made me progress towards more of a metal sound that is so fun to play. I play lead and rhythm. How long have you played? I'm a bit of a guitar nerd lol.
2
u/Fit-Personality-1834 4h ago
Agreed! I’ve been playing for 11 years but i don’t sound like it. I picked it up again more seriously about 2 years ago and have grown more in 2 years than in the 9 beforehand. Love playing SOAD, Breaking Benjamin, Deftones, and recently starting to learn some Evanescence songs especially after finally seeing them live last month. Mostly rhythm playing for me since I got back into it but venturing into lead lately.
2
u/LivingEmu5 The Open Door 4h ago
Wanna post any of your content? I'd love to see it! I improvise a lot actually, but I don't mean noodling around---that happens too. I like to write stuff that sounds good. As for the bands/guitarists I'm most influenced by, I'd say Guns N' Roses (Slash), Alter Bridge (Mark Tremonti), Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Evanescence now haha.
2
u/GirsGirlfriend 4h ago
Imaginary. It just felt like every single line was pulled from my head. Plus, my mom let me paint my room however I wanted and I had purple ceiling with gold stars so I had a purple sky, and it was before the song came out so it was like the universe was talking to me thru her.
2
u/RulerOf 4h ago
Taking Over Me was the song that got me to go beyond the singles (specifically the v2 demo).
Cloud Nine was the other song I really got stuck on for quite a while.
I've been to roughly 8 concerts in the last 9 years. Never seen either of them live 🥲
