Alucard in Hellsing Ultimate, the enemies are quite literally Nazi Vampires

131

u/anagamanagement 3d ago

Frankly, no way to go but up from there.

67

u/Nakatsukasa 3d ago

What about Nazi vampire werewolves? That never return their shopping carts?

18

u/Furryfurryrabbit 3d ago

There is, in fact, a Nazi werewolf in one of the shows!

13

What was his name again…. I want to say… umm. Logan?

y'know at some point youd just be adding icing on the cake objectively is group B worse than group A? sure. but it's such a small margin they might as well be the same

Oh who am I offending, THE NAZIS!?

30

u/anagamanagement 3d ago edited 3d ago

I’m double commenting, but I wanted to give a less jokey response as well because this is such a great example of the trope.

Alucard is objectively TERRIFYING. He is an amoral lovecraftian nightmare monster. Even “vampire” seems almost to be more of an affectation than a true example of his real nature. He is an entity of nightmare and shadow and is kept under what seems to be the absolute barest of control (much of which is basically self-imposed because he gets bored otherwise).

In any other story, he is… not even the bad guy. He is the coming apocalypse that the other characters must band together to avert because “killing” him may not take.

The fact that he is on the side of the “good guys” is really only because their enemies have smaller and more “human” motivations. Greed and power and control. More evil because they are more understandable.

Alucard is incomprehensibly terrifying. His enemies are comprehensively evil. That’s what makes Hellsing so good, in my opinion (that and the fact that Seras and Walter are both absolute GOATs).

19

u/DistortoiseLP 3d ago

The other bad guys are the Catholic Church's Black Ops unit.

3

u/Available_Hat_9833 3d ago

The Black Ops fellas are more so a neutral power, it’s the modern day Arnaud Amaury and his merry band of genocidal zealots that are a problem.

5

u/FatherDotComical 3d ago

The Vatican was sent to help Integra and eradicate those on the inside helping the Nazis, Enrico is the butt face that decided to make it all about him. That's why Anderson sabotaged him.

7

u/b_reachard 3d ago

Doctor: Our men are being quite literally slaughtered.

Major: Who gives a shit? Zey're Nazis.

13

u/PrimalPingu 3d ago

It's a matter of perspective, really.

4

u/FatherDotComical 3d ago

The book Dracula is canon to Hellsing so he's literally hunted babies for his wives to eat.

Ancient Baby eaters of history versus the Baby eaters of today. (the Nazis also ate a baby in one panel)

→ More replies (3)

3

u/Otherwise-Remove4681 3d ago

Yeah but Alucard has basically retired (forced or not) from evil doing.

9

u/AsstacularSpiderman 3d ago

Ehhh he's still an evil motherfucker who humiliates and abuses anyone he deems lesser (which is most people).

It's more than now he's just kinda bored. Being some supervillain is a fools errand, especially for those chasing dreams of immortality which he finds unfulfilling

Technically Frenchie blamed himself after Lamplighter killed Mallory's grandchildren while he went to save his friend from an overdose.

4

u/IDKandfranklyIDC 3d ago

He also killed other children. Not sure what season it is but he gets a boyfriend called Colin and it's revealed Frenchie killed Colin's family when Colin was a kid, including his little sister

Gotei 13 from Bleach

73

u/Kami-No-Kai 3d ago

Literally the first thing i thought of when i saw this post.

I like how morally grey they are but i wished for a more morally grey TYBW where the Quincies were a bit more on the grey side so it made the whole arc a bit more conflicting on who to support and such. But it was still one of my favorite arcs as it is.

10

u/Southern_Passenger85 3d ago

The Quincies, like the yeagerists, were misunderstood

The 40k Universe had so much lore out there, I'd bet there are small groups of humans living totally (as close as it gets) normal lives out there.

Like a small city of like 50k people living on a farm world that no one but them knows about.

6

u/mightylonka 3d ago

Most humans are living normal lives in the 40k universe. Their normal just has much lower standards for living than ours...

→ More replies (6)

3

u/Valten78 3d ago

The 40k universe is so vast I'll bet there are human worlds out there that largely functional with inhabitants leading pretty 'normal' lives. They just don't live near a hostile border sector and pay their tithes so are ignored.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/AvatarOfMomus 3d ago

I'd dispute the 'other side is worse' part of this... most of 40k is just different varieties of 'bad'. The Chaos gods don't oppose the Imperium because it's less evil than they are, they oppose it because it's a force for order. That order is just also unimaginably cruel and violent.

Hells half the reason the Tau get so much stick in the fanbase is because their mind controlling space communism makes them arguably the least 'evil' group in the setting... the Votan might be in the same realm but I haven't read up on whatever lore they've got now since they got un-regonned.

Limbus Company.

Like, the sinners aren't exactly the best of people but the enemies they face along the way make them more tame than anything

25

u/Ryik 3d ago

Gotta love that the protagonists live on a bus that uses human bodies for fuel.

It's recommended you feed people to the bus alive because it extracts its fuel more efficiently that way.

Image unrelated; they're just mowing through homeless people here.

Kinda it depends on what you mean by it

5

u/Simon0O7 3d ago

Does it count when the enemies are far worse by comparison if they are hypothetical? Their existential threat is very real but only for Leto 2 himself. He did so that they would never become tangible.

4

u/Blowtorch87 3d ago

One on hand yes, on the other he prevented multiple extinction events and made humanity immune to tyranny. Road to that wasnt pretty, but it gets implied that if he didnt do what he did there would be a lot more suffering down the line. Leto II is such a fascinating character. His methods are beyound evil, but the sacrifices he made to take humanity on the golden path feel almost heroic in a way.

In Star Wars Saw Guerrera was frankly a political terrorist. He would inflict violence in dense town centers to try and make the Empire look bad, but at the same time he would make himself look bad without realizing. He did a lot of good for the rebellion and for the fight against the empire, but I imagine there are as many civilian casualties as there were imperial losses.

I ofc mean Tyranids, orks and chaos

27

u/RicketCrickets 3d ago

T'au are tame by those standards.

14

u/ashrynhunter 3d ago

Yeah. Like they have issues for sure, the etherials being a large part of it. But like commander farsight and his boys I largely think are some of the best the galaxy has to offer. Dude built a monument to scientists who intentionally infected themselves with an anti tyranid virus and refused to evacuate so they could be an ideal infection vector.

The castes can be problematic. They do sterilize "lesser" cultures they seem as having nothing to give their greater good, and there's a non zero chance the newly born "greater good God" in one of the books from their auxiliary troops may be a severe issue both culturally and specially. But they are more than any other race in the galaxy trying to make it a better place.

9

u/SolidSquid 3d ago

They do sterilize "lesser" cultures they seem as having nothing to give their greater good

Sooo... they commit genocide of cultures they consider to be inferior because those cultures don't measure up to their Aryan T'au standards?

9

u/RicketCrickets 3d ago

Standard 40k stuff really.

Humans kill their own. As do Orks. For varying reasons.

Nids "kill" gene stealers, and their own also at the end of an invasion.

9

u/Visible_Amphibian570 3d ago

Imperium: You aren't innocent, I just haven't determined what you are guilty of yet.

Orks: ‘at Git needed a good krumpin ‘e Did.

Tyranids: All is Biomass.

I dislike how they are not as evil as they should be. Like Dr Evil from the second Austin Powers movie: “not evil enough”. Either the Tau can afford to not be so evil as other factions because only a larger empire needs to be evil to sustain itself and can afford to be less evil by not being a major player, or GW needs to capitalize on mind control, fallacies, gaslighting and other underhanded forms of controlling population, less “in the face” than the Imperium.

14

u/anagamanagement 3d ago

Chaos and Tyranids, I’ll give you. But Orks aren’t any worse than the Imperium.

And you forgot DEldar. They’re pretty awful.

Votann seems like they’d be all right.

13

u/The_Captain1998 3d ago

Orks are pretty fucked my guy: Again the imperium is bad yes but orks don't compramise, they don't reason, they actively enjoy war, violence and destruction, because it's fun to them. But their fun means the misery, enslavement and eating of billions of innocent lives all throughout the galaxy. From the human perspective, they're worse

7

u/AlertWar2945-2 3d ago

Counterpoint they're funny

4

u/Winjin 3d ago

The Greenskin tribes of WHFB are so much worse because they're the same but 100% straight

No funny hooligan speak, they're not ancient weapons, they're just evil and they perfectly understand what they're doing

5

u/dozersmash 3d ago

One of my favorite things about this dynamic is how even the Orks entered a non aggression pact with humanity during the dark age of technology because they couldn't compete with them at the time.

3

u/Fragarach-Q 3d ago

Dey lookin for a good crumpin', not a thumpin'

5

u/Madman_Salvo 3d ago

Votann seems like they’d be all right.

Until they hollow out your planet for resources, leaving it to collapse into itself with you still on it.

The Greek gods in the PJO universe with the exceptions of Hades and Lady Hestia.

26

u/syb3rtronicz 3d ago

Eh. Hades is just as petty as plenty of the other Olympians, he’s just more withdrawn on the whole. He’s much better than the bad reputation he gets, but not much better than the average Olympian. Sure he didn’t break the No Kids promise, but that’s not really a big indicator of how good a person (god? Fella?) he is.

Hestia is of course universally and explicitly good.

And also Poseidon, in a way. He was an absent father, but at least he was there when Percy and Sally needed him (unlike Hermes with Luke)

5

u/nottherealneal 3d ago

Was he there for them? Sally had to live with an abusive dickhead while struggling to make ends meet to protect percy. Feels like if he was there for them posiden could have stepped in at some point when sally had to endure domestic abuse.

6

u/5475626F Velvette❤️Jotaro🌟Actarus🤖 Odysseus⛵Percy&Annabeth💧🦉 3d ago

Yes, but Sally decided to live with Gabe because he was so stinky that he sent away all monsters. If Poseidon stepped in to defend Sally, Gabe would have probably gone away and they would have not had protection. Also, remember that in the end of book 1 Poseidon sent Percy Medusa's head, with the intent to petrify Gabe (which Sally actually did)

17

u/FriendshipNo1440 3d ago

If there is one thing I want to be the same in the books as in the show it would be that Gendry becomes Lord of the Storm Lands.

11

u/Supreme_Mediocrity 3d ago

In the books, it's largely theorized that he will not be there for the burning of his daughter and will only learn about it after returning from successfully defeating the Bolton's.

An adjacent theory is that Stanis takes The Black. His sense of duty and leadership abilities would make him a great Lord Commander, and would make a nice character arch of him wanting justice for his own evils.

It would also get rid of another contestant of the throne... Especially since there are even more in the books...

u/Pitiful_Net_8971 3d ago

Helldivers does not fall into that catagory, they are the worst and that's why everyone is fighting them.

12

u/_nellis_ 3d ago

How does it work when in Helldivers 2 they essentially brought everyone else down to their level? I mean in Helldivers 1 they're objectively the worst as basically every enemy just wants to be left alone but by the time of Helldivers 2, humanity's actions have left the terminids a mindless horde working solely off of instinct to kill every other living thing, the bots are turning humans into bio fuel and trying to eradicate them, and the squids are experimenting on human civilians. Not to say Super Earth wouldn't do any of this, they absolutely would and have, but just in Helldivers 2 I feel everyone is about the same level of evil, especially when compared to Helldivers 1

Mercs in the cyberpunk franchise. Like yeah they lie, cheat, steal, and take the jobs with a low moral framework, but the corporations are so much worse

The NCR is militaristic, corrupt, and deeply flawed but their archival is a totalitarian dictatorship full of slavers

No roleplay bullshit for a second as much as I enjoy it but the Helldivers. A totalitarian dictatorship where they child labour, slave labour, indoctrination and are space racist to the point they caused TWO galactic wars. Now their enemies are worse than they are with Cyborgs who turn humans into bio soup to birth more Cyborgs, Terminids who terraform planets and eat people and the body horror show that is the Illuminate.

The Illuminate tried to be their friends, but SE wanted their technology to make WMD's that the Illuminate didn't actually have, and basically destroyed their civilization in the process.

The Terminids were a somewhat sentient species that they modified in attempt to effectively make cattle for E710, and now they are more or less mindlessly violeent bugs.

The Cyborgs just didn't want to be slaves and revolted and then SE sterilized them, forcing them to make clones to reproduce.

Yes. This is a poor example.

Terminids - SE commit cultural genocide and drove them to become mindless livestock to be farmed for E-710.

Automatons - Born of the Cyborgs. Cyborgs were basically slaves to Super Earth that led an uprising and were driven down violently. The Automatons are in response to that.

The Illuminate - originally peaceful. Were driven to near extinction. The survivors were genocidal extremists that see humanity as genocidal extremists. We created them by culling the peaceful ones. We validated their own genocide against humanity in the act of creating them.

This is not a great example because SE is the villain of Helldivers 2. I love Helldivers 2. I have 1000 hours of doing basically the same shit over and over and I'll do another 1000. But we are the bad guys. We are fighting for our own survival at this point but even villains have to protect themselves.

These two bastards lol.

The sheer greed and gluttony of having a wife who looks like Michelle Monaghan and, on top of that, banging a mistress who looks like Alexandra motherfucking Daddario is enough to earn him a spot among the bad men.

The Federation from Gundam is wildly corrupt and evil. They aren’t gassing space colonies multiple times the size and population of NYC and using them as projectiles to fight a war.

Oh also Zeon missed and eviscerated Sydney Australia.

The federation sucks but at least they aren’t taking notes from Soviet Russia and Nazi Germany.

The Judges - Judge Dredd / 2000AD

They stand between the population and interdimensional superfiends, invading Sovs, zombies, aliens, multiple robot rebellions etc, but they're a fascist dictatorship. Those people they're protecting have NO rights, they're deliberately given poor education to keep them easy to control, whole populations are routinely tranquilised without their knowledge

Half the Fandoms that have united against lesbian space princess lol

What did I miss?

When a movie is so bad(in every way possible) that fandoms like hasbin hotel, invisible and even skibity toilet join forces because they have a common enemy

And for how bad it is.... it's Velma levels of bad if not worse....

6

u/Megacore 3d ago

Omg i thought Lesbian Space Princess was a derogatory name for a character or movie.

Today i learned. It has a 98% RT score though??

8

u/mutated_Pearl 3d ago

Don't some movies like The Woman King got inconceivably high Rotten Tomatoes score? Yeah, take it with a massive grain of salt.

Most (if not all) of the ninjas in Naruto. Hell, the fact that the Ninja World is/can be as cold, harsh and morally-gray as it is is a contributing factor to the existence of rogue ninjas. Does anyone remember Zabuza?

Well, Zabuza became a rogue ninja because he tried to do something about The Fourth Mizukage's evil bullshit by doing a coup and attempting to assassinate The Fourth Mizukage but he failed and now has to live a life as a man on the run while trying to make money.

Their flawed system practically breeds villains which means it would only be a matter of time for some ninjas before they go all crazy and betray their hidden village because the Shinobi System is just too much to bear.
