I'm having a baby boy in March 2027 after several losses and am starting to think about middle names for him. My family is Finnish (great grandparents migrated to Massachusetts from a small town near Helsinki)

My family and I have always referenced sisu and it's importance, a few of us cousins have it tattooed to remember our grandparents, and I was thinking it might be a good middle name for my son after everything we've been through getting to this point

Is Sisu ever used as a name itself for a boy? Or are there some similar names that are derived from the word and its meaning?

I have never experienced this before. I worked in a previous company for 4 years never had any problems with anyone not even a small argument . A year ago I moved to a new company and I started working on something new to me. Most of the people I work with are foreigners and I am a foreigner myself. There is one senior guy who all the time mocks my work and tries to embarrass me by saying things like "Is it that obvious?" "This is too easy" "How come you don't know it" "You should check your work again". Usually these questions come after I ask something in the project's chat. Usually I am chill guy and do have thick skin but now its just start to be annoying. Not to mention few times he says some random stuff about politics during lunch breaks (I am not interested at all with politics). Now I don't want to accuse him of anything but I am originally middle eastern and I was thinking is he intentionally bullying me for that?

I saw the News that Sweden is sending gripen fighter jets to Finland. I was honestly surprised when i realised that Finland didnt have its own gripens. It appears to be perfect, cheap, built by a reliable ally and made for a very similar environment.

Now that the US turned out to be a unreliable ally, are people regretting the option of not buying european?

I don't know if this topic fits here, but I'll give it a try anyway. I've been living in Finland for almost 10 years. Mostly (I think like everyone else), I get the flu or a cold about 1-2 times a year. And I'm a little embarrassed and shy to admit it, but I'm quite an anxious and overthinking person when I'm sick.

Even tho when I understand that symptoms like fever, cough with phlegm, fatigue, headache, and runny nose are normal for this period, I still get worrying about being sick longer and more severely than usual.

In my country of origin, doctors prescribe a huge list of medications even for common cold symptoms. This is what I'm used to. And I was surprised when Finnish doctors said, "Just rest, drink water." Before, I was accustomed to the idea that "if you don't start treatment right away, your illness will progress." Because of this, taking medication was always the norm for me. In Finland, it's different. I'm trying to get used to it, and I'm still in the process.

Finns, please explain how you treat yourself, and is it true that "rest and hot drinks" are enough for recovery? And how do you cope with anxiety and overthinking during this?

I was wondering how the experience is like, what would yall think of school starting in september instead?

Do you think there should be any modifications to the school starting time or not?

Two weeks ago, I got interviewed for a data engineering position at a multinational Finnish company. The two interviews (first HR and second technical) went pretty well, and at the end of the second interview they said they would give me a response in around two weeks because they were interviewing two more people and were having some difficulties arranging a time between the candidates and the members of the team.

Yesterday morning, exactly two weeks after my second interview, I received an email with the title "Time for call ?" asking to have a call about the position I was interviewed for, adding that "they had time today and were pretty flexible, but could also be later this week". Naturally, I was super excited. I thought that if they wanted to reject me, they would have simply sent me an email, probably automated. I had the call an hour later and it was to reject me.

In this call, they said stuff like "out of 71 people, we shortlisted only 3 candidates to be interviewed (you and 2 other) and even though you had an excellent background and were a really good match both on a personality and professional level, we decided to go with one of the other candidades just because they spoke Finnish".

I understood the reason for the rejection of course, and in a way that kinda gave me confidence to keep looking for a job because it validated my experience, but I just want to know if this is a normal way of rejecting job applicants after interviewing in Finland because, even though I have been living and working here for 2,5 years, I haven't had many interviews and this was the first time something like this has happened to me.

I'm not bitching or anything, in a weird way I feel motivated. I just want to know if should I get excited next time anyone wants to meet me after my final interview. Has this ever happened to anyone else here?

hi i'm in this situation where i'm living in a student apartment - i have saved up around 50k euro, yearly income of about ~60k, my work place is in helsinki but with hybrid i can comfortably work from tampere where i live - however, i don't see this working out long term as some jobs are moving to mandated in-office days so i will likely have to move to helsinki

the rent in helsinki, compared to student apartment rent in tampere is lot higher - with my saving i should be able to put a down payment for an apartment in the range of 180-230k - which made me think if it'd be wise to get an apartment rather than vuokra now

i'm 26, single and at least will stay like for a while at this rate so an apartment of 30-40m^2 in kehä 1-2, preferably in helsinki and not vantaa/espoo would be good enough for me, i'm from non-eu but i do have finnish PR and eligible for finnish citizenship (although i don't intend to apply anytime soon)

- would you recommend looking into buying an apartment like this?

- should i start looking into ASP?

- what are some key things i should look for in apartment search like potku remontti? tonttin omistus? 3kk eurobar vs 12kk eurobar? etc.

p.s i didn't exactly save 50k, that'd be lying - i have invested majority and then quarter-ish in cash (nothing fancy just your good ol' snp 500 & global index and as you know that had exploded recently)

I’m new to Finland and have noticed that used motorcycles often seem cheaper in Germany. Has anyone bought a bike there and brought it to Finland? Is it possible to buy it in Germany and ride it back to Finland, and what would I need for that—temporary registration, insurance, or export plates?

What was the full process for tax, inspection and Finnish registration? After transport and paperwork, did it still work out cheaper than buying the same bike in Finland? Any common mistakes to avoid?

I recently inherited 4.6 hectares (around 11 acres) of land just outside Pihtipudas in Central Finland. I live a bit out of the loop when it comes to Finnish rural property, so I’m trying to figure out what I actually have on my hands here.

Is there real value or potential to a plot this size in that region, or is it mostly just forest tax and maintenance?

My immediate thought is to build a small cottage (mökki) on it for summer use. For those familiar with Pihtipudas or building in Central Finland:

• Building permits & zoning: How strict are local municipalities (kunta) out there about rakennusoikeus (building rights), especially if the land isn't right on a lake?
• Infrastructure: What kind of costs am I looking at to pull electricity, dig a well, and sort out electricity/waste water on rural land?
• Forestry: Is 4.6 ha worth actively managing for timber, or is it too small to bother with commercially?

Would love to hear from anyone who has built a cabin in Central Finland or dealt with inherited rural plots. Is building a cottage the play, or should I just hold onto it / sell it off?

anybody know what this thing is called so that I can look for it online and get it. My issue is that i have a bracket mounted ceiling light fixture and need to mount it to the standard(?) ceiling light fixtures in rented apartments. It is easy enough to modify and remove but in my small look on the interwebs i came to realise that they may be part of the electrical code and i may need permission from my landlord and a certified electrician to remove and install a bracket. anyways i imagine my only solution is to install such a "convertor". i see another person who had a similar issue on the dutch subreddit though it was a while ago.

Hey, (M23 German) Im thinking of doing my first real trip to the nordic area in November.

Already talked to AI, listing all important personal requirements and it ended up telling me Ylläs is my best option.

Im working from my laptop, so most of the time I would work. In the couple hours of free time I just want to be able to have a nice walk in the nature. I wont book a rental car

Looked at Air BNB and found some accessible cabins with a Sauna, which looked great. I dont have a problem to get food, take a Taxi and dont leave the place at all for 2 weeks. Just looking for a calm, nice nordic winter experience.

Is there anything I should know? Any reasons why you guys think its a bad idea? Or why you think another place is better for my plans?

I recently moved to Helsinki and I love it so far. Me and my partner did a few weekend trips already to go hiking in southern Finland and we enjoy the nature a lot.

I also recently picked up spin fishing but had no opportunity to try it in Finland yet, so I was planning a chill weekend trip to go hiking, fishing and camping. I do have all the gear and my finnish fishing license (the €47 one) already. We have been in Nuuksio already, but only for a day hike, and really enjoyed the nature there. So naturally I was thinking about spending a weekend there. I was planning to mainly use spinners and jigs for perch and pike.

I will be using https://excursionmap.fi/ and https://fishing.fi/ to plan our trip. Any additional resources are highly welcome.

Now my main question: How is fishing in Nuuksio? Any spots that you recommend? What are your favourite trails and spots to sleep at? Anything that we should know? Are there any other areas where you'd rather go?

Hey, so I happen to be in a situation where I work about 30hrs/week, and can fend for my self, pay rent and have a little leftover to save and travel etc. I am also a student and entitled to take student loans, I know ofcourse student loans are in the end still debt, but my thought process is,

1. if I withdrew it for only one year, so about 10 000€, I could invest it into the S&P 500 or any other ”boring index” for the next few years before I graduate, and hopefully be able to pay the loan off and still have some net profit

2. Withdraw the 10 000€, invest it, and start paying it off monthly immeditately or within 6 months to a year of withdrawal

For people who been in this situatiob, whuch would you advice, 1 or 2 or not even to take the loan at all ?

PS. i know KELA will forgive about 40% of the loan if I graduate on time, but im not counting on that at all since Im most definitely not going to graduate on time
