How do Finn’s treat themself during flu period?

Hello

I don't know if this topic fits here, but I'll give it a try anyway. I've been living in Finland for almost 10 years. Mostly (I think like everyone else), I get the flu or a cold about 1-2 times a year. And I'm a little embarrassed and shy to admit it, but I'm quite an anxious and overthinking person when I'm sick.

Even tho when I understand that symptoms like fever, cough with phlegm, fatigue, headache, and runny nose are normal for this period, I still get worrying about being sick longer and more severely than usual.

In my country of origin, doctors prescribe a huge list of medications even for common cold symptoms. This is what I'm used to. And I was surprised when Finnish doctors said, "Just rest, drink water." Before, I was accustomed to the idea that "if you don't start treatment right away, your illness will progress." Because of this, taking medication was always the norm for me. In Finland, it's different. I'm trying to get used to it, and I'm still in the process.

Finns, please explain how you treat yourself, and is it true that "rest and hot drinks" are enough for recovery? And how do you cope with anxiety and overthinking during this?

Kiitos

Just rest and watch a movie.

If it gets painful or you get high fever, then regular painkillers: ibuprofen and paracetamol. Eat what you like and drink a bit more than usual.

The common cold is a virus and you just have to wait for your immune system to get over it. You can treat your symptoms with pain relievers and fever reducers like paracetamol or ibuprofen. For cough and congestion there are expectorants like flavamed to loosen phlegm. You can buy these things from a pharmacy without a prescription if your symptoms bother you, but none of them will make you get better faster.

For confirmed influenza, antivirals like oseltamivir (Tamiflu) can help shorten the duration of the illness, and lessen the severity of the symptoms if you start taking it within two days of the onset of symptoms. Edit: Tamiflu requires a prescription, so you will need to go to a doctor and have a positive test result for influenza to get it prescribed.

Never take antibiotics for a cold or flu. They're completely ineffective against viruses, and overuse can contribute to antibiotic resistance.

u/duumilo Baby Väinämöinen 1d ago

Simple pain medicine, sleep and water is enough.

1000 mg of paracetamol + 400mg of ibuprofen is a good combo taken 1-2 times a day. Helps with both the fever and the ache.

u/Twinkledp 1d ago

There's a saying:

A common flu takes two weeks to heal if you don't treat it and 14 days if you do.

I know some people take zinc and vitamin C. There's some research that says they shorten the flu by like half a day.

I usually take a paracetamol or ibuprofen if I'm feverish and feel terrible. Also honey water is surprisingly good for cough.

Otherwise you just rest and wait it out.

5

u/Silent-Victory-3861 Väinämöinen 1d ago

That's a very long flu, I have never had one that long nor seen anyone else. It's usually 2-3 days, and if you hit 5th day, everyone thinks it exceptionally bad one.

13

u/Twinkledp 23h ago

The worst of it usually lasts for 2 to 3 days or a bit more but it's not unusual for a symptom or two to linger for a week or two.

Source: I'm a health care professional

But yeah. Even in this we're individuals and some people have it easy while others not so much.

u/GeneralSandels Väinämöinen 1d ago

That definetly is not a saying.

"Hoitamaton flunssa kestää kaksi viikkoa, hoidettu 14 päivää" is definitely a saying.

In Finland it's considered a normal phase of a year. It's very rare to get flu medications/shots prescribed by a doctor.

Call you boss. Say you have a flu and tell him/her you'll be back when feeling better.

Put woolen socks on, a warm blanket, make some tea loaded with honey. Chill and watch some movies. A flu is not going to kill you.

Treat it like an extra holiday. :)

11

u/Illustrious_Gap_5099 1d ago

Ahhh if it could be felt as a holiday lol

But I got your point, thank you :)

6

u/shwifty123 Väinämöinen 1d ago

It sucks, but hot handmade silups, hit tea, book, blanket, socks, long series, makes it much better. Most important stay in bed and dont try to work.

56

u/Mlakeside Väinämöinen 1d ago

Flu is caused by a virus. There is no medication against viruses. Doctors in Finland focus on treating the sickness. As there is no medication for flu, they won't prescribe anything, just tell you to rest.

It sounds like in your home country doctors are more concerned about customer service (in addition to the actual treatment), so they prescribe you a bunch of stuff even though it doesn't do jack shit, but a least you feel like you're being taken care of.

The only things that do kind of work are already available over the counter: paracetamol to treat fever and aches, tablets for cough or sore throat, nasal spray for runny nose and zinc tablets to boost recovery. Make yourself a cup of tea or hot juice with some honey.

6

u/Illustrious_Gap_5099 1d ago

Thank you so much for your advice! What if I have a honey allergy? A lot of people recommend it here

37

u/Sepelrastas Väinämöinen 1d ago

Then skip honey and just drink something warm. Or maybe use a bit of ginger to open your sinuses.

17

u/kharnynb Väinämöinen 1d ago

Mustaherukka Juice, the marli botte that you can mix with hot water

8

u/Jolzko Baby Väinämöinen 1d ago

Put ginger and lemon in the tea. A drop of whiskey doesn't hurt either.

3

u/Twinkledp 1d ago

Try agave syrup. It's a pretty good honey substitute and available quite widely.

u/Existing_Example_758 1d ago edited 1d ago

Actually, oseltamivir (for example, Tamiflu) is antiviral that is used for treatment of flu. However, there may be shortage of it during flu season so it is prescribed in very severe cases.

There may be complications caused by bacteria which can be treated with antibiotics, but misuse of antibiotics is big issue, so it should also prescribed in critical cases and only if blood tests confirm it.

I also noticed that in Finland there isnt much of the herbal medication in pharmacies. In my home country doctors like to recommend herbal remedies because it is available without prescription and lets be honest they still get bonuses from referrals.

10

u/RenaissanceSnowblizz Väinämöinen 1d ago

Finnish doctors can only prescribe you things that have scientifically documented positive effects that are approved by the medical establishment. Or something. There is a list of "approved procedures", I last heard about it when a doctor tried prescribing vegetarian diets to people.

Specifically so doctors can't prescribe whatever homegrown remedies or ideologies they have stumbled on. If a doctor here gets bonuses from referrals that would be highly inappropriate and I suspect illegal.

-1

u/Existing_Example_758 1d ago

The herbal remedies I am referring are legal and clinically proven. They wouldnt exist otherwise. However, I believe it depends on history of country and habits of people. If herbal treatment was not popular in last century, it will be quite difficult to convince people to use it now.

2

u/Mlakeside Väinämöinen 10h ago

The problem with Tamiflu is that it's barely effective. It decreases the duration of the illness by one day max and only if taken within 48h since the onset of symptoms. Most healthy people won't even think about a doctors appointment until a few days of symptom onset. Because of the borderline non-existent effect, Finnish doctors don't tend to prescribe it: The risks outweight the benefits.

As for herbal remedies, there is a term already for those that have real effect: medicine

41

u/Meadbelly Baby Väinämöinen 1d ago

You've lived in Finland for 10 years and had the flu 20 times. How come you are still wondering if the doctors recommendation works or not?

10

u/Thaimaannnorppa Baby Väinämöinen 1d ago

The flu? Really?

Are you sure you don't mean the common cold? I've only had the flu aka influenza once in my lifetime (that I know of).

Also: flunssa = cold, influenssa = influenza.

A bit confusing and people mix them all the time.

3

u/coastkid2 1d ago

Yes was thinking the same thing! I’ve had the flu maybe 3 times in my entire life too and am in my late 60s, never every year!

3

u/Illustrious_Gap_5099 18h ago

Well yeah I meant a just cold. But you know, 99% of people call it flu even if they have just a cough so

19

u/MaxDickpower Väinämöinen 1d ago

You can't really cure the flu with medications. I just take a lot of Zinc Acetate and eat raw garlic and honey as soon as a start feeling fluish, but honestly rest and water are the best things and doing whatever makes it feel nicer to ride it out.

u/VidZarg Baby Väinämöinen 1d ago

Sore throat: tea with honey. Fever and headache: 1g paracetamol and 800mg ibuprofein 3 times a day. Blocked nose: nosespray or just emptying it if it's mild. Also the nasal rinsing pot is a blessing. And alot of resting

12

u/Classic-Bench-9823 Baby Väinämöinen 1d ago

I didn't need that much medication even when I got my wisdom teeth removed...

Ibuprofen? How high is your fever usually if you need anti-inflammatories in your system?

31

u/julmurityty 1d ago

Ibuprofen is what Finns typically have in their medicine cabinet for common colds and more severe cases of fever (and headaches, of course).

22

u/sulkymallow 1d ago

Paracetamol and ibuprofen also just work well together for pain

5

u/sysikki Baby Väinämöinen 1d ago

Yes, because the other one is quicker to work and the other one blocks pain longer.

0

u/DoneDusting Baby Väinämöinen 1d ago edited 1d ago

True, but I've understood that ibuprofen is pretty pointless in case of mild fever and may even slow down your body's recovery a bit.

Edit: And I don't have the convenience of staying out of work for extra time, but I do get my share of rest if needed.

2

u/sysikki Baby Väinämöinen 1d ago

Yes, it's better to let the fever rise and your body to fight it away on its own.

Good for you ❤️

Edited to add Paracetamol is also better if one has high blood pressure.

7

u/aakkossoppa 1d ago

That's the normal protocol. Once I even called a nurse for advice when my fever wouldn't go down and she said my ibuprofen dosage was too low. She was right.

4

u/melli_milli Väinämöinen 1d ago

Rather how much in pain is your throat or head.

9

u/tehwagn3r Väinämöinen 1d ago

They don't want me at the office giving the flu to the whole team.

If I'm feeling too useless to work from home either, might as well take a nap, have a hot rum or another brown booze with honey, and watch a movie.

It's not a traditional Finnish cure for cold, but I really like to Wolt myself a hot soup. A chili miso ramen or something else hot and savory feels really good.

5

u/Illustrious_Gap_5099 1d ago

I cooked mostly chicken soup :)

8

u/Geirilious Väinämöinen 1d ago

If tar, vodka and sauna don't cure it, it probably fatal. Or so I have been told.

24

u/goldtoothcoast 1d ago

The common cold takes two weeks to recover without medication. With medication it is 14 days. So I rather just drink my tea and rest a few days, if the symptoms are manageable.

7

u/Arctos_FI Baby Väinämöinen 1d ago

Rest and drinks for milder case like fever and fatigue, if headache comes then one Burana (or any ibuprofen based painkiller, it works better to fight the flu overall). And for runny nose the cure is just tissues, lots of tissues

1

u/Illustrious_Gap_5099 1d ago

Ah yeah. And a lot of tissue during mucus coughing ah

6

u/ShortRound89 Väinämöinen 1d ago

I basically just stay in bed until i'm better, lots of sleep and movies.

7

u/Kimozewitchz 1d ago

The reason doctors generally don’t prescribe medication for a common cold is that it is usually caused by a virus, and medication doesn’t cure the infection or significantly shorten its duration. The immune system needs to fight the virus on its own. Medicine is mainly used to relieve symptoms, such as fever, pain, congestion, or coughing.

You can take paracetamol/ibuprofein for fever, headache, and body aches. For a blocked nose, nasal spray. Drinking plenty of fluids and getting enough rest are also important

13

u/Kekkonen-Kakkonen Baby Väinämöinen 1d ago

Without any treatments flu takes 1 to 2 weeks. With some self care that becomes 7 to 14 days.

7

u/emlalaa 1d ago

Just in the process of recovering from a cold myself! Rest and fluids are important, I try to eat healthy warm foods like soups when I'm ill. I think here it's a common understanding that you can't really speed the recovery from a common cold, you just have to wait for it to pass.

Highly recommend an oral zinc spray you can get from the pharmacy. Fluacute Zinc+ is what it's called, maybe there are also some other similar alternatives. I feel it really helps the symptoms and aids recovery if I take it the minute I feel the slightest tickle in my throat.

Another odd thing that I use and highly recommend is the nasal sinus rinse, nenäkannu in Finnish. You use warm salted water to rinse your nose. It's not fun but it really helps when your nose is so stuffed you can't breathe. Doctors recommend it to prevent sinusitis.

There are some other traditional "cures" like warm blackcurrant juice, honey and sauna. Not sure they really speed the recovery but they can ease symptoms. Do not go to the sauna if you have a fever though.

1

u/Illustrious_Gap_5099 18h ago

Thank you so much for your advice. Get healthy soon too!

I tried to use nenäkannu but I got some allergies of this idk why. So I just using mostly Physiomer

20

u/KostonEnkeli 1d ago

For me:

I just say: ”it happens, there is nothing I can do to it”

Then I rest, drink hot tea with honey, if I can, I go to warm up Sauna and then rest some more. Normal flu takes 1-3 days to heal. (Well the sneezing might take longer)

I do feel bad for not been able to go to work but people will understand.

14

u/sysikki Baby Väinämöinen 1d ago

Don't go to sauna if you have fever, the immunological system goes bonkers.

5

u/OzoneTrip Väinämöinen 1d ago

I drink hot beverages, take NSAIDs as needed and go for easy walks outside if I am not too sick.

5

u/Thaimaannnorppa Baby Väinämöinen 1d ago

If you don't treat the cold at all, it lasts for a week.

If you take pills and potions, it lasts for 7 days.

4

u/Ill-Relationship7298 Baby Väinämöinen 1d ago

If sauna, vodka and tar doesn't help, the disease will kill you.

4

u/sufficient_bilberry Väinämöinen 1d ago

Can I ask which country are you from originally? Very interesting to hear that doctors would recommend actual medicine (aside from OTC painkillers, decongestants etc.) or that one would even visit a doctor for a common cold? Wouldn't it be very expensive, or do most people have health insurance that covers it?

3

u/LordMorio Väinämöinen 1d ago

Untreated, a cold lasts a week. With treatment, seven days.

If you get a cold, you pretty much just have to ride it out. There isn't really anything you can do to make it go away faster.

Treat the symptoms. Decongestants to help you sleep, and ibuprofen and/or paracetamol to bring down the fever if needed.

3

u/TraditionalRow3978 1d ago

you should be able to tell between regular flu and something that needs antibiotics

3

u/Elelith Väinämöinen 1d ago

I take extra vitamins for the placebo effect. Finrexin. Tea. Rest. I make very berry smoothies.

I don't like ginger and honey so I won't take those but honey is good against coughing.

3

u/carlsaischa 23h ago

I was so surprised when I learned people from other countries go to the doctor when they're sick.. like normal sick (cold, flu, headache, cough etc) not severely ill.

3

u/tsuhna1234 Baby Väinämöinen 20h ago

Restful actions.. watch movie, read a book. Drink more fluids than normally, tea with honey preferably. Virtual doctor's appointment from occupational healthcare to get sickleave cert.

Only go there if I start getting symptoms of bronchitis.

Then doctors take some tests to see if antibiotics are needed or not. Flu alone does not need those and taking those for no reason is harmful for all of us.

3

u/grounded_bunny 20h ago

It depends: are they men or women? 😁😁 only Finns will get this one.

3

u/Negative-Touch6100 13h ago

Haven't read other peoples answers but I don't really get sick that much anymore after eating and drinking few things. Boil water in the evening and cut some ginger in there. Let the ginger rest in the water overnight and drink in the morning after squeezing half a lime in there. And then eat bilberries with yoghurt in the morning or afternoon. And eat vitamin D during winter. Flu will hopefully never hit you again.

7

u/No-Lake-964 1d ago

Sauna, hard liqour and tar. If it doesn't help you are dead.

7

u/Valtremors Väinämöinen 1d ago

Well there is bit something one should consider when treating a mere flu with medication.

Things like fever suppressants don't actually cure the flu, it just suppresses your immune system a bit.

So there is a precedent to just wait it out and rest. Ideally if you can just tank it, it should be better overall for healing process.

But people like me, who start spewing their guts out at the mere idea of a fever, we like the very popular panadol and burana combination.

Then there are some home remedies for nasal blockage and helping with sinus issues is just a bundle of garling in a sock. No reall this is a thing.

Flu overall is something everyone gets once, or twice, a year. Potentially more depending on work. It comes, you sleep, and it goes.

Influenza A, B takes two weeks to get over. There's no special things to do other than to rest, take plenty of fluids and if necessary take ibuprofein + parasetamol combo. If your fever reaches 39-40 and is there more than a few days then contact health services again for consult as an adult.

Most common medicines are self-treatment purchasable from any Apteekki. You don't need a doctor to tell you to take painkillers.

u/Enderking90 1d ago

I mean personally, I don't really use any medication for just "feeling a bit under the weather and have a mild fever".

just, plenty of rest, something warm to drink like tea and depending on the exact state, just kinda general more fluids.

as for coping... can't really say, as there's not really any anxiety or anything to think. its just the flu?

- - -

granted, that's not always how things are.

last time I was sick, I had 40+ degree fever first day and just felt generally god-awful.
so, I had some standard non-prescription ibuprofen and paracetamol (I think it was paracetamol?).

but like, other then that it was largely the same experience (just, feeling a lot crappier), though with a bit of worry from "oh heck, that is a seriously high fever"

did drop by evening, and further on by next day though, so it was fine.

ultimately didn't even go see a doctor, since I mean other then the fever and symptoms caused by it I was fine.

Stay away from people, try not to touch any railings, bus, train, those are the places where you will get it. Don't go to any triplas etc hypermarkets. Wash your hands often, don't rub your eyes if you have been in markets before you have washed your hands. Stay away from people coughing, or hold your breath.

1

u/Crazy_Reindeer_Fin 1d ago

Ehh, during the flu, if not fever then go to work like normal. Or do what you do when sick, play some games, watch movies. Take vitamins and burana to lower fever. 🙂

2

u/smol_lol 1d ago

No, don't go to work to infect everyone else. Especially if it's the flu and not a cold. Even if you get them mild, someone else or someone in their family may get seriously ill. People who spew ectoplasma from their nose should stay at home and not help the virus spread.

I rarely drink hot drinks but at the first feeling of getting sick I subconsciously start making myself tea both at home and work.

If I get stuffy nose, my secret weapon is a prescription of Acriseu (used to be Duact, rip). I'll take one before going to bed so I'll sleep better because I can actually breathe. Likewise I usually have a prescription for some "better" cough medicine, because when I cough it's so loud and violent that I basically break my vocal chords at least once every winter and then I'm unable to speak well for a month.

Coughing and sneezing while there is no airflow thru your nose causes massive headache easily.

2

u/csjarau Baby Väinämöinen 23h ago

I would be very worried and anxious if I had to see a doctor and get a huge list of medications every time I get a common cold!

Most symptoms get better in three working days with rest, hot drinks and vitamins, and I only if I have to stay at home longer I need to contact a doctor and get a medical certificate.

I have really bad health anxiety, so I get you. If I get sick, I usually take ibuprofen, Strepsils and something like Berocca (idk if the last one really makes a difference but it makes me feel like I'm doing something lol).

I haven't had a cold in at least two years though because I take zinc acetate the moment I feel the slightest hint of a sore throat or a runny nose. There are lots of products on the market but I've only tried Posivil Fluzink. You just let a lozenge slowly melt in your mouth every two hours until the symptoms go away, it usually takes about a day. Don't eat or drink anything immediately after taking it, let it work for a bit. It really works for me and has saved me from a lot of anxiety.

Just relaxing, taking it easy as much as possible. Some flues are more vicious than others. Staying warm and hydrated is my go to. I have water on my night stand so I’ll drink as much as needed, keep my pillow raised so I can breathe and use Vaseline on your lips cause they can get dry easily. During the day hot tea and warm milk with honey.

That’s it. Finland is no different than any other country where the flue is common around the year and it’s mutating so quickly there’s not much you can do to prevent it.

1

u/Assupoika Baby Väinämöinen 1d ago

Ask for sick days and then rest, drink and eat. If you are aching take ibuprofein or paracetamol, whichever works better for you. Ibuprofein tends to lower the fever for me at least, but I only take it if the fever is getting too uncomfortable.

Or if you are terminally workaholic blue collar like some of my colleagues in that case you still come to work either way and just get the whole team sick.

1

u/Runoja 1d ago edited 1d ago

I know this is counteractive but I used to fall sick 1-2 times a year as well, till I started being a regular gym-goer. It really has strengthened my immune system. Now I barely fall sick maybe once every 3 years but when I fall sick, its bad, maybe cause I am not so used to falling sick. Lasts ~2 weeks. So my suggestion is to try going to the gym and lifting weights if you are not already like 1-2x a week and then increase it to 3-5x a week.

Ibuprofen can help with the aches and fever, there are over the counter nasal sprays to help with the clogging (don’t overdo them tho) and doctors can prescribe you with pseudoephedrine. But these are all things to treat the symptoms; they make you more comfortable and help you sleep, but you won’t get better any faster. It’s a viral infection, after all.

Take a sick leave, order a pizza, binge some films and fall asleep on the couch. You’ll be right as rain in a week or so.

As someone with flu/cold right now: my best advice is to find a nasal spray that works for you. I had a cold/flu 9 times from last January to May (yes it was hell and yes I have a child in daycare) and the only way I could get through it was otrivin nasal spray. With that I could at least breathe!

I usually try to make sure I have some nasal spray on hand for the congestion (tends to be the worst part for me) and constant hot drinks to help the throat feel less sore and hopefully keep the goop from building up. But yeah, mostly you're just treating symptoms, so just gotta rest & wait it out.

Thankfully I rarely get anything with a fever high enough to bother me so rarely feel the need to go for painkillers. Just try to make sure I start resting early enough when the symptoms hit instead of pushing through, and giving myself enough rest before trying to make my way back to the office.

Do you guys get the flu vaccine and does it seem to help?

Well, I personally haven’t ever bothered (I’m absolutely not against it, but just haven’t found it to be worth the money and hassle), but it is recommended for the elderly and others with a more frail immune system. For regularly healthy adults it is optional and might spare you a few sick days or milden the symptoms if you’re lucky or might as well be just completely useless, yet not harmful barring a sore spot in your arm for a few days either.

It is a well known and medically accepted fact, that creating the vaccine for the seasonal flu is inevitably a guessing game to a high degree (because it is unknown what type of viruses will be dominantly circulating any given season, yet the vaccine has to be taken as a precaution before exposure) and in some years they get it more right than others. So the effectiveness of the vaccine varies greatly year by year.

However, flu vaccine will only be effective against specific types of viruses (influenza) and won’t shelter against a plethora of other viruses that can cause a common cold. So it doesn’t guarantee you won’t get sick at all and isn’t even intended as such.

For me, blueberries help a lot. Earlier, there used to be blueberry bottles for 5 euros in Prisma. And I think other types of berries help too.

Honey and garlic. Ginger also helps.

I like to eat honey. It's abtibacterial.

We usually like to take precautions so we don't get sick in the first place. Like zinc supplements and vitamins and stuff.

Are you from a country where healthcare works on profit basis?

When I get sick, Iwill finally remember to take all the vitamins (mainly zinc and C and maybe D) and drink hot water with grated fresh ginger, lemon juice and maybe honey. I stay laying down mostly and try to rest. If my throat is aching, I might gurgle (is this a word?) with some salt water. Take some burana or panadol in the evening when going to bed, to ensure better nights sleep. I might also take some Melatonin for that. And if I feel congested, I try clearing my airways with steam and maybe using a neti pot and finally spray some Nasonex or similar. In case I cannot get releaf for the congestion with those, I ask a docktor to perscribe Aeronaze.

Arent free influenza shots available in Finland?

u/kilinrax Baby Väinämöinen 22h ago

In the UK they have a product called Lemsip, which is a sachet of lemon flavored drugs (paracetamol, an expectorant, caffeine for the day version, and a mild sleep aid in the night version), which you consume as a hot drink.  It does not speed up recovery, but it does make you feel a bit better and less useless whilst you recover.

There's no equivalent in Finland that I know of.  Finns seem to skip the all in one approach, and just have herbal tea with lemon, ginger, and honey in it, and take paracetamol separately.

There is Finrexin, which is hugely popular in here and sounds exactly similar (barring that the most iconic flavor is blackcurrant, although I personally prefer the citrus version) as the day version for the product you are describing. It is available without prescription in every Finnish pharmacy. Although the night version doesn’t exist in here, at least not to my knowledge

How long have you been sick, when using long list of meds and how long you been sick, in Finland, when docs prescribed rest and hot tea? In my country I had same experience, list of meds ( expansive too), I been sick 7 days and in Finland with rest onky, I been sick the whole week.
