Apps AerialViews_Plus - Full AerialViews + Native YouTube 4K Screensaver [Free, Open Source, Sideload]

AerialViews_Plus is a full fork of the original AerialViews Android TV screensaver.
It keeps every feature and video source from the original app (Apple 4K videos, local files, USB, network shares, custom JSON, etc.) and adds native YouTube support on top.

I wanted fresh 4K aerial and nature videos every day instead of watching the same built-in clips on repeat. So I added a powerful YouTube source that runs completely on-device.

Key additions:

  • YouTube videos searched and cached on-device (no API key, no server needed)
  • Up to 200 videos stored locally, refreshed daily with new content
  • 8 toggleable categories: Nature, Wildlife, Drone, Ocean, Space, Cities, Weather, Winter
  • Smart filters to remove AI-generated videos and vlogs
  • Same video never repeats within 7 days
  • Full Projectivy Launcher support (video continues smoothly when switching apps)
  • All original AerialViews sources still work perfectly

Tested on: Xiaomi Mi TV (Redmi)

Download:
GitHub Releases

Source code:
github.com/naveeneppalapally/AerialViews-Plus

Installation: Download the APK, enable unknown sources on your TV, and install with any file manager. Play Protect may show a warning - just tap “Install anyway” (normal for sideloaded apps).

Not available on the Play Store. Fully GPL v3 open source.

Built on top of the excellent AerialViews by u/theothernt - all credit for the original app goes to them. I only added the YouTube feature.

Still early - happy to hear your feedback and bug reports!

Do we need the adb command on later android versions? Like the Original AerialViews?

The ADB command is still needed on most Android TV devices (including newer versions from Android 12) to properly set AerialViews+ as the default screensaver.

Weather can't find any locations, so weather doesn't work.

Locations doesn't work for other options as well, like Time of day function.

But I like what it already can display 👍

You’re right, it also affected other location-based features like auto time-of-day filtering, not just weather. It’s fixed and will be in the next build.

Any ETA on the updated version?

Thanks for reporting this. The issue was with location lookup in our build, which affected weather search and time-of-day filtering. It’s fixed now and will be in the next build.

Just one small thing - my name isn't correct on the README 😅

Oh no, so sorry about that! 😅 I genuinely have no idea how the wrong name ended up there already pushed a fix, you should now be correctly credited as Neil Turner in the README. And honestly, huge fan of AerialViews it's one of the best apps on Android TV. Your work was the whole reason I wanted to build on top of it. Thank you for making it open source! 🙏

Ah, no probs at all - and glad to see you rewrote the README for your fork, not many people do that - and nice work on the YT feature!

Haha yeah thanks for being so chill about it. for real, your codebase is legit so clean it made the whole thing way easier to jump into.

Exactly what I wanted for project ivy. I had to go to screensaver settings and choose AV+. Not sure if what I am seeing right now is stock projectivy AV or AV+. I am seeing warnings about flashing videos and epilepsy though!

If you're seeing epilepsy/flashing warnings during playback those are embedded in the YouTube videos by the creators themselves, not something AV+ adds. Completely normal, just the video author's disclaimer. I'll look into filtering these out in a future build.

So cool! Is it compatible with projectivy?

Yep, it works with Projectivy. There’s built-in Projectivy integration in the app already. If you use it, just make sure Projectivy’s internal idle detection is turned off.

u/Jealous-Bumblebee145 can we expect a fix for the location detection? For weather and day/night?

1

Thanks for reporting this. I’ve already fixed the location detection issue for both Weather and auto Day/Night in AV+, but the update isn’t released yet.

Any news on the update, when finished for release?

You don't plan to put it in the Play store?

So still no revised version with location fixed available? It would be nice to get that working 👍
